  • There are two different ways to knit German short rows and this tutorial explores the differences between the two and when and where to use which version.

    German short rows are very simple. Basically, it boils down to slipping a stitch purlwise with yarn in front and then pulling (quite strongly) on the working yarn to create a double stitch. Later on, you will decrease the double stitch by knitting it together. So far so good. But when you do this process on the knitside, the result will be a slightly twisted stitch.
    To avoid this, you have to slip the stitch knitwise and knit it together through back loop later on. However, while this might create a balanced stitch for the knitside, it might not always be the neatest way.
    So, this tutorial explores the differences between the two different ways to knit German short rows and when and how to use them. In the last part, I also show you why and how I knit my German short row heel.

    Absolutely the best demo on short rows I’ve ever seen. I’ve been knitting for 53 years, and a few years ago I also adjusted how I do my German short rows to avoid twisted stitches in exactly the same way you have done. I'm addicted to your videos! I learned so much; you explain everything so well, so calmly. Well, surely, I am still a beginner, but I was so proud when I finished my first scarf and my first headband. Yes, they are not perfect, I can see the flaws, but it's fine. I realize that great work comes in time, with experience, with lots of practice. So, just thank you, Norman. Vielen Dank! :-)

      Let Me Tell You From Years Of Perfectionist Torment... You're The Only One Who Notices The Flaws. Even Other Knitters Don't Tend To "Knitpick" Your Items 😅 But Just Like Our Bodies, We See A Supernaturally Enlarged Problem Where Only A Triviality Exists. Keep On, You'll Do Great Things.

    • @NimbleNeedles

      @@StarfireReborn let me tune in on this and strongly disagree here. I hear this theme so often and it can be very hurtful. Not all brains work the same. Some see the large picture, others focus on the details (especially ppl on the autism spectrum, etc). And for these, these flaws can be a big problem and it's very important to recognize them and not tell them they don't exist or it's fine. It often is not and it's nothing you can (or should) fix with therapy or nice words. I know, you mean well and I thank you for this. But do be careful with that and word in a way it's inclusive.

    I found this same thing when I was knitting a cardigan several years ago!! I was doing short rows in pattern, though, so I thought it was just the fact that I was doing seed stitch, and so had purl and knit stitches on both back and front. I ended up purling some stitches through the back loop (tricky but doable), knitting some through the back loop and knitting / purling the normal way some stitches to get them to come out untwisted, depending on what the underlying stitch was (ie. knit or purl). I don't remember pulling stitches to the front, but it all did work out. German short rows were the only short row method I could find that really worked for non-stockinette fabric.

      well, i'll see what I can do. But the thing is, and I hope the last section of this video prooved that, it depends a bit on how close you space them. I’ve knitted countless small projects like mittens and socks (heel flap and gusset), and started my first sweater but I’ve already frogged it twice. I just wasn’t happy with the look of my GSRs. I watched so many RUclips tutorials, googled, read forums about what I might be doing wrong but still couldn’t make mine appear as invisible as other people’s. Finally this afternoon I did a large swatch in the round with different GSR techniques people have recommended and I found yours to be the neatest out of all of them. Truely, thank you!

    A fantastic video!! I struggled to get it looking as neat as yours in the round! Still my next sweater will look far better because of your video, Norman! You're amazing :)

    11:30 Timestamp for balanced stitches
    I found that it is more about knits and purls than right or wrong side. I am making a top that has both knits and purls in a row so I had to use both methods on both sides.
    I found that after turning the work, if the stitch that is to be the double stitch is a knit (on that side), slip knitwise, and if it is purl, slip purlwise. Use the appropriate decrease when resolving them. This is what gave me the best results.
    Thanks for the video Norman! All of your videos are brilliant but this one especially was so useful and kind of revolutionary to be honest 😂

    Norman, once again, a million thanks for your wonderful content!! I was wondering whether you could make a video explaining how to create a raglan sweater, when to incorporate short rows so the neck on the back is higher than the front neck, when to stop increasing, etc. This would be sooo helpful ❤

    Thank you, Norman, for demonstrating that there‘s a difference to the methods that GSRs are knitted. Your tutorial was enlightening. I abandoned GSRs because they didn’t leave a neat finish but I am going to try these techniques to see what works best and try using the GSRs again for sock heels. Great video!

    I'm new to "short rows"?!?!@#$&) All other tutorials show one line or two but presume I know something, whereas, I know nothing. You are the first who has not presumed I've heard of this knitting method. Many thanks.

    You're brilliant Norman :-) Thank you so very much for this tutorial. I have noticed the twisted stitches on heels and have often changed from German Short Rows to Japanese Short Rows for the neatness factor. But now I don't have to! Thank you! Danke!

      @NimbleNeedles  Год назад

      awesome. I mean, give this a try, maybe you still like the JSR better...but this certainly is a good option, if you ask me!

  • @daniellebissonnette3304
    @daniellebissonnette3304 Год назад +1

    Wow! I love how you pick apart a tested and true technique, and offer an alternative. As you mentioned in the video, this new way to do German short rows will not replace to traditional way, but it t may be useful to solve problems along the way. After all, knitting patterns, yarns and techniques continue to evolve, so depending what we are knitting and what we are using, the technique could be very useful. I will definitely find time to swatch the two options the next time I make a garment that calls for GSRs. Thank you!

    • @NimbleNeedles
      @NimbleNeedles  Год назад

      Tho, I do have to mention that the twisted version actually is the more traditional way here in Germany 😅
      But yeah, swatch and check what you like most.

    Thank you, again. I’ve never understood German short rows. Others have done tutorials, but your explanation, and showing this stitch both ways really makes sense. And… you chose larger yarn in colors that really show up the v’s and legs of the stitches. I think I could pull up one of the sock patterns I want to try, and knit a pair of socks for Christmas!
    Thank you, Norman.

      very happy to hear that. I was even considering to use yet larger yarn. then again, this is already 6-ply and nobody knits socks with larger yarn either. so happy, my considerations worked out for you!
