  • @lokibane4939

I think you guys completely hit the nail on the head with this song. A side note, the entire band are massive Rush fans, and Bill has been doing quarantine Rush covers with a few other famous musicians.
To add my thoughts on what you were saying, once you guys said that the more frantic/tripping over itself 'YYZ/Godsmack' part was growing on you after the chorus, Mastodon has a history of doing that very, very deliberately. They open with the part that doesn't make sense, this wild jumble of music that takes the listener by surprise, but by the end of the song, every last part of the music has been given context. I think that's the phrase you were looking for, is musical context. The first section didn't make sense, it wasn't translated for you, until they got into the chorus. It's like reading the last page of a book first, then reading the rest of the book. It's a bizarre, backward thing at first, but the journey of coming to both understand, then enjoy that part that confused you at first is the best part of their music in my opinion!

I think Ryan and George just tend to not really love songs with odd time signatures and startling transitions as much. They love a good groove or rhythmic pocket that they can latch on to and move to without losing the beat. I agree that they'd love songs like Steambreather, Stargasm, etc.. like people have mentioned. For me, this song is an absolute barn burner. They came out the gates guns blazing with this track and I love it. I personally don't find it disjointed at all. I think the way they string together these different riffs and odd time signatures is pretty seamless and feels like classic Mastodon.

3:44 Good call on YYZ. Similar sound. Certainly a foundational part of the song. This has all the elements of a Mastodon song.

Y'all *gotta* do Sickle & Peace at some point. It's probably my favorite off the new album.
Jaguar God, Chimes At Midnight, Tread Lightly, Toe To Toes, Crack The Skye & Ancient Kingdom gotta get peeped at some point, too.
Edit: Fallen Torches is also a really solid one that might've flown a little under the radar because it was released on a "rarities" type album.

When I first heard it the first thing I thought of was Prong except when the drummer is singing.

I love how the lyrics get interpreted, like metal bands sit down and say: I'm gonna write a song about how life can be hard... just in general. 🤣

Killer Be Killed is a supergroup Troy is in. Try "from a crowded wound" for a great song, or "inner calm from outer storms" for a great reaction! Cheers!

I feel like you guys should try out some Black Metal. I haven't seen your guys patreon, but MAN I would KILLLLL to hear you guys listen to some Darkthrone or Mayhem!!!!!!!!! It'd be a step up for you guys because its super raw production. But Oh lord it would be awesome.

I know people are gonna keep recommending new songs of theirs but if you're really struggling with these guys see if there's any way you can't try to get a hold of any vids of their acoustic performance from the recent livestream they did at the Georgia Aquarium. There's a lot to be "learned" about the sounds they're making when they've been stripped down into clean guitars and vocals and it really becomes something unique.
