This entire record is easily one of the best metal releases of the 2000's
While you are absolutly correct in saiying 2000's. To me it's on par with Pink floyd's best albums. I know this is totally personal but i dont think i like any album more then i like Crack The skye. Absolute Awe trip from start to finish
Leviathan blood mountain and CTS are all among the best albums of the 2000s and remission is amazing too, all for of those albums pretty much received universal acclaim
It's not personal man, to me this is on par with some of the best music ever created. Im not even a "metal guy". One day i was looking for albums to expand my horizons, I happend to find this one. And while it wasn't love at first sight. Straight away i could tell i needed to give this one a chance. Fast forward some years, this is a contender for best album ever as far as i am concerned
The whole album is a journey. A masterpiece culminating in this journey of a song. Take your time and listen to the whole album from start to finish. Absolute beauty.
Totally agree
It is one of those albums that’s amazing all the way. Even the last one too, but this one was just special, I git a lot of my family that liked hard rock and older guys into mastodon because of this one.
Yeah it's a real concept album and all ties together, this is the big finale but the journey of the whole album is amazing, and there are just no weak bits.
You have expanded my horizons. This is my first listening to Mastodon. It will not be the last.
I’m one year in and have had most of their discography on repeat since then. Ridiculously consistent quality but their sound has evolved and changed too, keeping it interesting. If you want to hear modern Mastodon, check out Teardrinker and More Than I Could Chew from Hushed and Grim. Enjoy 🤘
Lmao when that groove riff comes in thoooo
I was waiting for it too!
I second what people are saying here: you HAVE to listen to _The Czar_ next. Then take your time and listen to the whole album from start to finish in your spare time. That's the best way to listen to one of the best albums ever created by any artist.
God I love Mastodon, good band to start getting acquainted with, they never disappoint
So good, very strong argument for the best discog in metal since 02
that's ok man , we all fell for that "groovy funky section" ; and after all these years , we still do !!!! brilliant reaction man ; more Mastodon soon please !!!
The tragic events behind this album give every song a weight and impact I've rarely felt from music.
These guys got the serious choppiness to em... good stuff...
Watching this song played live is like watching a marathon race. The endurance and focus that must be needed is amazing.
Best part is they have 3 singers!
The album cover has two pics of you and your reaction to the song 👍
The man trying to air drum to Brann’s drumming is wild
My favorite Mastodon song. Happy you picked this. The Czar from the same album is another epic piece that will take you on a journey.
I’d highly recommend the tune “Ghost Of Karelia” from this album. Absolute killer tune. Mastodon is the truth! 💪🏼💪🏼 AGAIN, I will recommend the band Conjurer, from the UK. The songs “Thankless”, “Choke”, “The Mire”, “Rot”, or “ Basilisk” are great tracks. The band deserves much more recognition than they get. 🤘🏼🤘🏼
This one has what I consider the best vocal work by Troy Sanders. It's also my favorite Mastodon track, but no one asked me that. 😅
This album is easily one of my favorites of all time. Its such a masterpiece. The title track, Crack the Skye, brought me to tears before i ever knew what it was about. The drummer, Brann Dailor, little sisters name was Skye and she committed suicide when she was only 14 or 15.
Im still havent listened to a riff better than the riff in this song. Yes, you know what riff Im talking about
I'm so happy that you are enjoying your Mastodon journey. These guys are phenomenal. If I could recommend a song, it would have to be Steambreather. Keep up the great work man.
Probably one of my favorite albums front to back. This album and Blood Mountain from them are insane albums to listen all the way through
Leviathan is too, all 3 of those albums are masterpieces.
I wonder what will you feel when you listen to Gigantium...Mastodon is amazing, always, they are from another planet.
Mastodon only makes amazing music and everyone in this band is next level! Amazing live band as well! 🤘
THANK YOU!!! Mastodon is truly one of a kind. My personal favorite band. Their musicianship is out of this world. Check out Capillarian Crest for more insane chops. Their drummer Brann Dailor is magnificent.
Hello once again TCD...I saw them in 2015 and they blew me away...They have 3 lead singers that swap verses back and forth...I recommend you listen to ASLEEP IN THE DEEP...You want choppy vibes with a chunky killer chorus that song delivers 🧐✌️🤘
Flawless album
BY THE LIGHT OF THE MOOOOON!!!
Damn I love this song🌖🤘😁
But that verse is from _The Czar_ 😅 (I love that one too)
An incredible band, so much range. For something completely different from them, I'd recommend Mother Puncher from the first album, pure groovy choppyness
Mother puncher is so fuckin hard man, absolute banger
Bro, your reaction to this epic song is a joy to witness. You got hooked in straight away. Don’t be surprised if you’re hitting repeat for the next few weeks or months! Crack the Skye is a prog classic and I’d recommend The Czar next as another piece of psychedelic magic. Having said that, Blood Mountain is my favourite Mastodon album (just over CtS), even though that’s hard to believe.
This song is brilliant, truly underrated musicians, these dudes have their own unique "lightning in a bottle" sound and style
Brann (the drummer) recently did a playthrough of this and a few other songs on the DRUMEO channel, it's deffo worth a gander.
As for 'that riff' we all feel the same!
This is the last song of the Crack The Skye album, by far the most "proggy" work in the Mastodon discography. The title track is amazing too, as well as The Czar and Oblivion. Actually...the whole damn thing is a masterpiece. One of the greatest, maybe even the greatest progressive metal record of all time IMO.
TEAM CHOPPY DROPS! Cya tomorrow man 😂 🤟🏻
Mastodon are pure legends! This album are a masterpice and this song are just a journey in the skill and crazy world mastodon created! Enjoy my friend !
I really like the thickening and more then i can chew as a mastodon newbie those songs really got to me next to this one kf course
Watching a Mastodon fan being born. GO SEE THEM LIVE!
Just finished watching your last two great reactions (previous with > 32 min and this with > 21 min) and got myself wishing they were both longer. Very happy to see you back to your choppy healthy form :)
Just saw these dudes for the 4th time with Gojira a couple of weeks ago. Crack the Skye is among my all-time favourite albums and has been listened to front-to-back countless times. Glad you enjoyed.
I find this album’s style of prog-metal has a lot more moodiness to it, and is a good palette teaser to venture into post-metal… something like the opening track (So Did We) of Panopticon by Isis. Heavy in a different way, not fully choppy, but feeds your soul so well.
So happy you came back to this band, dude. 😀
I'm not trying to be look at me Louie but I saw them play this whole entire album front to back in Detroit Michigan and it was the definition of musical beauty
Congratulations my friend, you took the advanced course on Mastodon. Jaguar God to The Last Baron! Now you know... Mastodon certainly is the best collection of talent since Rush or Pink Floyd. Enjoy your journey. If you like the long epics then try Diamonds In The Witch House or, my favourite, Hearts Alive. You can't go wrong with Mother Puncher or The Wolf is Loose if you want to be assaulted. Cheers!!
the first time i heard this , i was blown away.. just like you. and for me, that’s why i like watching first time listen reactions, cause it puts me in the same place again when i hear it first. Keep going man. lots to choose from. love your channel. keep up the good work.
Appreciate it my man thanks for tuning in!
Maybe do Colony of Birchman by them (grew up my teen years with this classic), The High Road, Curl of the Burl
Crack the Skye and Souls At Zero are my favorite albums to watch first time reactions to
Whoa, I almost missed this one! Sorry CAPTAIN CHOPS, I shall REPENT. OK, time for the sludgy CHOP this is the one and only MASTODON.
Tambourine rock dat sheet
Starting with Jaguar God and going right to this one is wild 😂... I hope he keeps up and checks out their 80something shorter bangers.
‘That’ riff.
This album won a Grammy Award .
I saw them in 2017 and they fucking opened with this tune. Absolutely mindblowingly awwsome!
Still can't go wrong with Mastodon. You really should check their first 2 albums. Those are hard!
This whole album just flows so well. One of my all time favs
This is my first time hearing this from Mastodon with you...have you not done that Opeth dive yet?
Cuz this is the most Opeth Mastodon song I've ever heard with those changeups,...fans know.
Hey my friend I've reacted to a few Opeth songs so far and all were BANGERS! 🤘🤘
🤣 ya after I said that I watched em' all last night.
been listining tp mastodon for more almost 20 years now. they are just amazing. flawless,as you well puted. Great reaction video btw. ./,,/
Their lead guitar player Brent Hinds has said his favorite part of being in a band is guitar solos. And he doesnt write them or plan them. The band writes and records the song then he usually comes in and plays the guitar solo and thats what goes in the song. Maybe a couple tries if he needs it but he plans and writes nothing for the solos. And it shows, Mastodons solos have such emotion to them
Can I make a recommendation? Firth of Fifth by Genesis. They're an English prog band from the late 60's who were massive influences on both Mastodon and Tool.
I struggle to like their early stuff, but I love this album!
I know the album is partially influenced by the drummer's sister's death, but I can't help think that 'Against the Day' by Thomas Pynchon must've been a literary influence, also!
🔥🤟🔥
Crack the Skye is a masterpiece. Hushed and Grim is a masterpiece.
Check out Porcupine Tree, “Anesthetize”, “Hate Song”, etc, live versions.
This album falls right in the middle of the Mastodon journey. Their first album is a bunch of punches to the face and neck and chest. The most-recent is a double-album of melodic punches that are mixed with hugs. Crack the Skye brings the best of all their sounds together.
Make a reaction video for One last Chance Martyr everywhere
You need to listen to the whole album in succession. Maybe do a separate video for each song but plan a day to listen to the whole album. It's a journey alright.
If your band can transition and breakdown like these guys then yes you should write long songs. On repeat describes this song since I heard it a decade ago,
I can't be a Mastodon fan though I really tried. I enjoy some of their music that are less proggy, but "The Riff" is just superb - and it's also the straightest part of the song.
Please make a reaction video on one last chance martyr every where 🙌
If you want something a bit more aggressive I'd suggest dry bone valley, or colony of birtchmen. Something a bit more up tempo check out motherload, or show yourself. These guys go deep and aren't afraid to experiment.
Try reacting to The Czar, from this same album
Make a reaction vedio on one last chance martyr everywhere
Sound like Ozzy to me. Not bad.
Brent's nasal vocals do sound a bit like Ozzy, you're not wrong on that.
That’s Brent the lead guitarist, he definitely sounds like southern ozzy at times, their drummer and bassist who also do lead vocals have totally different voices tho. Anyway you should check more mastodon out if you aren’t familiar with them, one of the best discographies in metal since 02. If you into heavy shit I recommend their song mother puncher, if you want a long epic that’s also heavy at times hearts remain, if you want emotional stuff with clean vocals with killer riffs roots remain or more than I could chew. All their albums sound different but they all kick ass, them having 3 different lead singers as well makes them very unique, their drummer Brann Dailor is one of the best in the business and his vocals are awesome too.
It seems fantasy/sci-fi lyrics seem to meld with prog metal flawlessly.. top two bands Tool, Mastodon. Just astoundingly unique and enjoyable to listen to. 🤘🏼✌🏼😅
I highly highly recommend their song roots remain, incredible song that has it all, killer riffs/drums/solo/lyrics and very emotional. Mastodon is so good tho, so much variety over their career, if you want some really heavy shit mother puncher from their first album is an absolute must listen, or if you want like an epic long track hearts alive, over 10mins long and so sick, heavier than this song tho and has harsh vocals same with mother puncher
