@@AndrewRooneyDrums Yessir! Story goes that Bill and Brann moved down to Georgia from New York after being in two separate bands together, looking for a new one, met Troy and Brent who were also in bands together and hit it off at a High on Fire show in 1999. The got a singer briefly, Eric Saner but it didnt work out so vocals were needed and without rambling too much today all four members sing live, however only three of them sing in the studio recordings.
@Meowmeow0506 oh, well then I have no idea why he is officially credited as contributing backing vocals on Blood Mountain. He's never done lead vocals, maybe that's what he is referring to?

The section at 9:05 is what gets me so excited to talk to people about this band. Where Brann in that chorus takes the first verse to match the vocal rhythm with his snare fills and then follows the lead guitar with his toms on the second verse is some truly magical composition.
Also compared to most other "virtuoso" drummers (Danny Carey, Mike Portnoy, Neil Pert, etc...) he rocks a pretty minimalist kit. In fact I think on leviathan he didn't even use a bass drum. He's just....pure precision.
Was standing outside the Showbox in seattle in 2004, just watched Mastodon. My friend and I are standing there blown away by the performance. Then we hear "have fun guys?" We look between us and its Brann the mann. "Yes"...😮..."you guys wanna go get some beers across the street?" ..."Yes😮". Partied with Mastodon, Kat Von D, and Matt Bayless, producer of Blood Mountian, for the rest of the night. Was a night ill never forgt. Incredibly nice guys, all of them. This guy will go down as one of the very best to ever do it, and we are all blessed to be alive to witness him as he evolves. Thank you Brann!
Damn, that reminds me of the time I saw Mastodon at Neumos in Seattle back in 2009. They were still playing small clubs like this back then which was an absolute treat to see such a high caliber band in such an intimate venue. The tour bus was parked right in front of the club and the band members would just go between the bus and the venue with the rest of us through the main hallway entrance. I chatted a bit with all of the members in this corridor that night. It felt like I wasn’t meeting one of my favorite bands but rather some cool guys from the neighborhood at the local bar. Brann was awesome to speak with along with Troy, Brent and Bill. It was so good to see that one of my favorite bands of all time were just some really rad and chill guys all about making great music, having fun and hanging out with the crowd before their set.
Somewhere in the making of Emperor of Sand videos, the bassist, Troy, calls Brann a mountain with octopus arms and legs saying he has to look back at him on stage from time to time to make sure he's still human. I personally can't think of another drummer that can fit so many intense fills throughout songs without it feeling excessive, it just always feels right. And he's a helluva singer too. He might not always sound the best singing live, but when you've got an hour and a half of drumming like this I think it's understandable. He did the vocals on Two Minutes to Late Night's covers of Over the Mountain and No Presents for Christmas. Almost feels like it should be illegal for one person to be able to nail Ozzy and King Diamond vocals and also absolutely tear up the kit with songs like Last Baron.
He's the single strokes master of today and his strength/endurance is as top tier as it gets. He's also a consistent ghost note fellow which I admire. I sometimes try to play this when feeling very energized because its exhausting 😅. I still cant fully play it as my arms/wrists start shutting down, but thats always trying to use 2b sticks for me and I probably need to try just regular 5a for this song to see if I can last longer. Epic piece and drummer Brann is.
Finding a video that shows off how good Brann actually is is hard because he's a beast. This is a great video for that. The fact that he sings lead on a lot of songs while playing like this is crazy (albeit he simplifies some of it while performing live). Tasteful toms galore. Also the dog on his drums is 'Precious'... Buffalo Bill's Dog from silence of the Lambs. Love that you can feel the emotion in Mastodon's work. For your own listening I'd recommend Oblivion.

Very nice! Glad you got to this! Brann is easily one of my favorite drummers in rock/metal and has been for a while. He killed this live. SPEAKING of DRUMEO lives, Blake Richardson did a Drumeo appearance recently and there will be videos of him doing songs like this and or playing songs without knowing them so PLEASE do some more of that monster. It's been a while since you did a video on him.
Brann is the main composer of the band and sings while drumming at this level. Completely insane! Remember when I saw them live for the very first time, almost 12 years ago, and got blown away but their music. Fan for life, the might oceanic beat! 🌊🤟
There is no single one main composer it depends album to album, like on hushed and grim it was bill and Brann, CTS was Brent with the biggest role and then Brann. It really just switches up album to album, in recent years it’s definitely been Brann and bill tho but there has never really been 1 main composer throughout their history. Brann and bill write together and jam together a ton tho so they’ve been a super prominent writing duo in recent years for mastodon
Brann is the man…. the ethereal progressive movement of their compositions taken to another level by his drumming… so busy, but perfectly balances the feel of the interdimensional trip that Mastodon takes you on…. powerfully beautiful.
I don’t know Brann. But his drumming and his emotion in playing has been such a part of me over the years, I just really want to give him a big hug and thank him for everything he has done for me and my emotional system.
Bran, Eloy, Dave Lombardo, and Danny Carey are my top 4 personally. (for this music) I knew Bran was special the first 20 seconds of the first Mastodon song I heard. i get so much joy watching you in awe....
I saw the whole show of that album live none stop then 10 minutes break, small talk to the crowd then an other 45 minutes of older songs, those guys were amazing Brann is brilliant and a very nice guy, love them all miss them tho. My fav drummer in Metal music for sure.
love that it hit you like that too!! all the albums before crack the skye would blow u away and charge you up but a few of the songs off this album had me welling up , from the music alone (not what you expect from a metal album) then even more so when you learn about the inspiration for the album and what happened to his sister. truly beautiful music
@@AndrewRooneyDrums thank you kindly sir, i love watching your vids, youre a good drum teacher and know what you talk about. You have such a good eye and ear for details 😊👍👊🤘
I'm so blessed to have seen them during the 10th anniversary tour of Crack the Skye that Brann mentions at the end. He sounds incredible here, but the entire band live is a truly incredible experience!
The thing for me that sets Brann's playing from most any other drummer that I've heard is that he grew up playing with only a guitar player so he learned to play along with the guitar where most drummers play along with the bass. If you listen to it again with that in mind, you'll look at it completely differently.
When I saw the original Drumeo video come out, I almost didn't watch it so I could see it for the first time when you eventually reacted to it. Thank you Adam, for the request!
Can't believe I hadn't watched this video until now! This is one of my favourite Mastodon tracks. It's got everything, killer riffs, composition reminds me of classical music with different movements, rhythms and tempos make me think of jazz. People may have suggested it already but if you like this you should also check out Caprillian Crest, another belter with crazy drums.
Met Brann twice now! Once in Minneapolis and once in Omaha when they played with Opeth 🤘🤘Really nice guy-he talked and took pictures with me and my wife
I heard this song about 1000 times but everytime hearing it i get goosebumps. It‘s a masterpiece❤ What a drummer he is…..out of this world and he also sings in a lot of Mastodon‘s songs🔥
It's a pretty emotional album for Brann too, with Crack The Skye was underlyingly (aside from the Tsarist Russia lyrical themes) written about him trying to save his little sister, Skye, who he lost, so I'd imagine his playing is very emotional too
Forreal I was so hoping we’d see him do capillarian crest, the last baron rules and takes more stamina but man the drums on cap crest are just glorious
That was such a good Drumeo episode. Loved his stories growing up, how he followed guitarists instead of bassists and their writing processes and stuff. It was an hour long but felt like ten minutes.
A really fantastic band. So underrated its a crime. Seen them live twice. Their muisc hits so hard emotionally. Haunting really. And they're from the Deep South so there's that......Love More Than I Can Chew and Colony Of Birchmen.
Thank you so much for doing this! When Drumeo dropped this and I saw the video was an hour long my jaw dropped, and when I saw Last Baron was in the middle I absolutely freaked out. Glad it hit you in the feels, this whole album "Crack the Skye" is in reference to Brann's younger sister Skye passing. Drumeo is doing incredible work lately
got to see him live last year when they opened for Gojira in Portland. he stole the show!! and to think he drums like that AND sings lead on a number of songs too! great video, thanks Andrew! would love to see something on The Mars Volta, either with Thomas Pridgen OR Jon Theodore.
Damn, i had forgotten about this masterpiece of a song. Used to listen to it on repeat years ago. Their best song, hands down. And it seems kind of underrated to be honest. Brann is a beast, as always!
The dog on the bass drum head is Buffalo Bill's dog "Precious" from Silence of the Lambs. Brann is a beast, his single stroke rolls are super nasty. He is in my top 10 list of best drummers of all time. He isn't particularly technical, but he is dynamic, consistent and has a passion for music. Also bro has the voice of an angel. Not many drummers sing and play at the same time.
I wish drummers reacted to Seabeast from mastodon, it's basically 90% sick fills. Such an underrated drummers song. Theres a reason there is like 1 cover on it.
It's pretty awesome that Brann says Bill Ward is one of his favorite drummers (and didn't I just see in the drumeo video last month that Bill Ward told him on an Ozzfest that he liked what Brann was doing as well).
The best modern metal drummer out there. I don't drum, I know next to nothing about drumming. I always knew Brann was an incredible drummer, but I see actual drummers watch with the same awestruck expression I fully appreciate just how talented this man is.
Dirty Donny painted the kit. He has done a few for Brann I believe. The kit he is playing in the Meinl videos was one of his as well. Killer paint jobs!
You can probably see why Brann said "shit" before having to play this song, it's a hauling song and quite epic in its epicness. It's actually fun to play to, I haven't played to any Mastodon tunes for ages. I do adore the entire "Crack The Skye" album, dedicated to Skye Dailor (Brann's sister) & put together after Brent Hinds was hospitalized after being beaten into a coma; he basically conceived the music in his hospital bed when he was able & Brann and the other bandmembers helped with the album's overall concept. Great song, fantastic band with a great body of work to their credit.

SPEAKING of DRUMEO lives, Blake Richardson did a Drumeo appearance recently and there will be videos of him doing songs like this and or playing songs without knowing them so PLEASE do some more of that monster. It's been a while since you did a video on him.
Thank you Andrew for reminding me why I fell in love with Mastodon many years ago.
Just incredible
@@AndrewRooneyDrums and he's such a nice guy
Brann Dailor is the kind of drummer where you didn't realize you were holding your breath the entire performance. Incredible.
I could watch drummers watch Brann all day.
I saw the whole show of that album live none stop then 10 minutes break, small talk to the crowd then an other 45 minutes of older songs, those guys were amazing Brann is brilliant and a very nice guy, love them all miss them tho. My fav drummer in Metal music for sure.
I saw them with Opeth in the Ryman. When I young I never dreamed I would hear this style of music in that room.
My1st time hearing this...not my last. I'm in awe of this insane musician.
Best Metal drummer out there. Period!!!
love that it hit you like that too!! all the albums before crack the skye would blow u away and charge you up but a few of the songs off this album had me welling up , from the music alone (not what you expect from a metal album) then even more so when you learn about the inspiration for the album and what happened to his sister. truly beautiful music
New fan here! ✋
Saw them on that tour. Still one of the single best live performances I’ve ever seen.
Saw them tour for Leviathan,Remission, blood mountain and Crack the Sky..they are unbelievable live .Brann also sings too..
Awesome video, awesome drummer! Hoping to see you check out more of his time on Drumeo.
Astonishing
Clean
Tight
Technical
Epic shit
Outstanding ❤
ticks on all the above
Ah right. Nice point!
Brann and Mastodon is out of this world. Check out Capillarian Crest for another one of MANY mind-blowing drum performances!!
When I saw the original Drumeo video come out, I almost didn't watch it so I could see it for the first time when you eventually reacted to it. Thank you Adam, for the request!
The fact he can play like this while singing is ridiculous 😅
Yup
you hear his kit work and drop jaw, and then he opens his mouth. This is not man, this is nephalic.
This was beautiful chaos! 👍
Very well put
I heard this song about 1000 times but everytime hearing it i get goosebumps.
It‘s a masterpiece❤
What a drummer he is…..out of this world and he also sings in a lot of Mastodon‘s songs🔥
It's a pretty emotional album for Brann too, with Crack The Skye was underlyingly (aside from the Tsarist Russia lyrical themes) written about him trying to save his little sister, Skye, who he lost, so I'd imagine his playing is very emotional too
Now you gotta watch capillarian crest from the same video
Forreal I was so hoping we’d see him do capillarian crest, the last baron rules and takes more stamina but man the drums on cap crest are just glorious
His technique has a lot of flash, but it is all completely purposeful. It’s also great to see how much he loves his craft.
Yup he's into this. Can feel and see it!
Flash? Yeah, begone.
Andrew Rooney Drums, nice video I really liked it
One of my all time favorite Mastodon songs! Such a groove to it
That was such a good Drumeo episode. Loved his stories growing up, how he followed guitarists instead of bassists and their writing processes and stuff. It was an hour long but felt like ten minutes.
15:23 I love how you can see Brandon smiling in the background
YUP!
Very few times I've seen you this speechless. That's what Brann's play style does to people
A really fantastic band.
He sings backup harmony on this live too
Yeah that's mad
Damn, i had forgotten about this masterpiece of a song. Used to listen to it on repeat years ago. Their best song, hands down. And it seems kind of underrated to be honest. Brann is a beast, as always!
I saw them in 2017 and they opened with this song! Just absolutely mindblowing
What an onslaught
@@AndrewRooneyDrums it only got from then on
The dog on the bass drum head is Buffalo Bill's dog "Precious" from Silence of the Lambs.
Braan is phenomenal, and also sings excellently.
I love Brann, but Mario Duplantier
I’m not saying you’re wrong but I laughed at the transition from the hard “he’s the best comment” into “I know nothing about drumming”. Cracked me up
The fishing boat on a rocky ocean feel you're getting is probably because you've listened to Blood & Thunder from Leviathan
Dog on the bass drum is precious from silence of the lambs
the way he moves over the kit reminds me of ginger baker and neil peart :)
that's not a bass drum, that's a woofer!
Dirty Donny painted the kit. He has done a few for Brann I believe. The kit he is playing in the Meinl videos was one of his as well. Killer paint jobs!
Need more Brann doing all that, AND singing 🤯
You can probably see why Brann said "shit" before having to play this song, it's a hauling song and quite epic in its epicness. It's actually fun to play to, I haven't played to any Mastodon tunes for ages. I do adore the entire "Crack The Skye" album, dedicated to Skye Dailor (Brann's sister) & put together after Brent Hinds was hospitalized after being beaten into a coma; he basically conceived the music in his hospital bed when he was able & Brann and the other bandmembers helped with the album's overall concept. Great song, fantastic band with a great body of work to their credit.
This lad is absolutely mad
Some might even say an absolute mad lad
