@@duhlike they may have albums not as good as others but in the grand scheme of things, Mastodon is well on their way to becoming a legendary heavy music band. They will be up there with Sabbath, Metallica, Slayer, Pantera etc
This was AWESOME. I’ve always been a huge fan of Bill’s riffage but knowing now that the guy behind it all is such a laidback, relatable and humble person takes it to another level! I think it even stunned Lee how genuine of a dude Bill is, despite how big Mastodon as a band have become. This interview made my weekend. Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦
The amount of chord shapes he runs through while just talking shows how dedicated he is to doing what he loves, thanks for the look into your life Bill!
It's taken me until I'm 39 to really start learning guitar properly and Mastodon have been one of those bands that inspire me to keep trying. I couldn't have a lesson from Bill without feeling completely overwhelmed and way out of my depth, I'd never have believed such a thing was even possible back in the early 2000's. Great interview, great band, great bunch of guys.
It’s really cool to see that your favorite guitar player is a super well adjusted individual who’s cool to talk to is just a normal person is very refreshing
Bill's transition from a wild man to a laid back, calm guy is something else. He used to go HARD (I think acknowledged too hard) and it's great to see him as a more mature guy... gives me hope for myself, lol
That’s what a long successful marriage and kids will do to you. We as men suddenly awaken to the reality of our true responsibility and power in this world. So we contain it and use it wisely like a Jedi.
I love Bills personality and his way of conversing - he has always seemed like a good dude. His rhythm playing is innovative with unique chords and sounds….I’d love to have him play more solos in Mastodon.
Along with Rick Beato's interviews these are some of the best out there. I think it's key that the interviewer has a passion for what they're interviewing a person about.
Bill is a legend. These boys are the real deal. Genius musicians who are still down to earth regardless of their success. I think the universal perspective on them is that they're regarded with a high degree of respect individually as people, and for their musical merits. Every album is a gold mine that never gets boring. Love these dudes. Especially Bill, he's the heart of Mastodon. What a great guy
I've just gotten into Mastedon this year, having a blast exploring their catalogue. Their "making of" documentaries on RUclips are the best I've ever seen.
Mastodon is one of the few bands where all 4 members sing. They are pretty unique. Their first several albums were really great and Leviathan might be the best metal album of the millennium
It's a shame that we only get Bill's vocals when he does backing live, but he's said that he'd rather get into a real groove on the guitar. All of the guys have got great and distinctive vocal character. I've loved listening to the changes in style as they have gone through the albums, it never gets stale and I can always go back to an album and enjoy it again. The albums from Call of the Mastodon to Blood Mountain scratch the heavy itch, and the mixture of prog, hard rock and psychedelia going from Crack the Skye all the way up to Hushed and Grim is amazing.
Bill just has such the perfect amount of confidence, like he's humble but he knows his strengths and puts the love and attention into honing them and pushing his limits
He makes his guests feel at ease but he needs to calm down a bit, maybe a benzo or two. He stutters and stammers through questions sometimes and asks it in four different ways before he finally gives the floor to the guest.

I loved this interview!! One of my favorites!! Bill has been an inspiration to me for the past 10 years after getting into Mastodon!! Their chemistry as a band is flawless!!🤘🏻
This interview helped get me through a birthday party. You know one of those your little kid is invited to and you’re the only parent there trying to avoid small talk.
Bill is an unsung legend of the RIFF. I’ve always been much more enthralled by players who write catchy, complex, heavy, *musical* riffs (without OVERdoing it) than by the two handed tappers, sweep pickers and 5-minute solo players. That stuff is cool and impressive, but it’s never been what grabs me. Bill is THAT guy and it sounds like he took that same approach when he was younger, eschewing EVH for East Bay Ray and Greg Ginn. Loved this interview. Thanks ✌🏻❤️
Man I forgot about this channel. Years ago like 2012 ish I was looking to get a Les Paul and couldn’t justify spending the $$$ for the version with the fake ebony (richlite?) and you guys reviewed the LP classic custom which was basically a thinner neck and a baked maple board…. Point is I went with that and that video helped me with the choice. Still have that guitar and love it and have recorded a ton of music and gigged with it never let me down. Mastodon and Bill are badasses.
These interviews are amongst the best music interviews of all time. I could listen to these guys talk about their passion for hours. Mastodon are incredible, and Bill is such an amazing player.
Bill's guitar passion is amazing...met him backstage once and he said he was pumping out one solid riff a week...many more Mastodon songs to come for sure.
Great band "Mastodon". Interesting hearing about how he started out playing through his dad's stereo. You don't need a lot of gear to learn and make music. My 1st amp was not an amp but rather my portable Panasonic CD/Cassette/Radio that I would plug my guitar into the Aux line in and try to jam to songs on it. My distortion was basically the speakers about to blow
Just watched this interview and want to say to the Captain: you are a fabulous interviewer! You let Bill TALK as much as he wanted (which was happily, quite a lot) without interrupting him and you asked questions that he was really into answering and elaborating on. The interview was delightful. Thank you Captain and Bill!
Sublime interveiwing skills Captain...that video flew by and was a pleasure to watch. Great questions and and interested interviewer, you could tell Bill felt at home.
This was one of the best The Captain meets videos. Bill is a really cool down to earth dude. I remember seeing Mastodon open for local bands in my area in tiny clubs right before the first album came out. They deserve all the success that goes their way , monster work ethic. Great band great guys. I can vouch for the Mojo Tone pickups I have them in a Rock N Roll Relics Heart-Breaker ( they make them for RNRR ) they sound fantastic.
What an absolute legend. I do adore Mastodon as they're one of my top favourite metal bands. I did manage to get Crack the Skype signed by him after a guitar clinic he did in Birmingham back in 2017 I believe and he was awesome and what a pleasure to meet one of my favourite bands' musicians.
Thanks, Captain, for this wonderful interview. I had heard of Mastodon but never really knew much about them. But after listening to the entire interview am going to go check them out. Bill seems like a great guy and a real down-to-earth person. I really appreciated this. Thanks again.

It's great seeing you appreciating Mastodon. Now I know why Pete has been playing a couple of their riffs in recent videos! 😉
