WOW! This is a true slow burn. You picked some of the best songs possible for this. Can't wait for you to finally hear The Czar AND The Last Baron. Two of my favorite musical pieces ever.
I don't know if you'll read this Geebz, but I just want to say how much I enjoy how you present these videos. Before "More Than I Can Chew" you say "let's sit back and enjoy" and that's really the key for me; you let the music do as much talking as you do, and it's so much easier to appreciate the craftsmanship of the song that way. I've watched a few different reaction channels and most of them are pausing the songs every 10 seconds to gab about some such and it hurts my soul to hear these songs that I adore all chopped up and broken. But you let them play, and I thank you for that, because it means I can enjoy the song so much more, and enjoy your input as well.
Hey Gav - Wow, thank you so much for sharing your thoughts on my reactions, it means a lot. I'll read your comment every time I feel like quitting :) AWWWRIGHT!!
Highly recommend listening to their 4 song ep Cold Dark Place as well. Very moody and proggy. I feel like people forgot they released that, it’s a great album
One of the things I love about the drummer is he does so much snare work. Most rock drummers love running their toms all over the place, but Brann really sticks with the snare a lot, and gets so much out of it.
Blue Walsh is an absolutely beautiful and underrated Mastodon song to check out. It's on the release before their latest album and is most like Crack the Skye. You can hear their drummer's hauntingly pretty voice paired with the steel string.
I loved Cold Dark Place. Really creative and different to their usual style. Brent Hinds wrote those songs for a solo project that never happened, and the guys in the band heard it, and thought it was far too good not to be made into a proper record.
They're so good, soo good. One of the best modern metal bands that keep their standards up every time they create songs, also killer riffs and drums. You gotta check one of the most important bands to Mastodon, Neurosis.
Mastodon is such a great and unique band, not only is their lineup consistent but their music has evolved in interesting ways their discography is quite a journey
You're correct about the songs rolling into one another on Crack The Skye. This is part of the genius of the album. Mastodon wrote the album in such a way that it's really one huge musical story that moves fluidly from one song to the next. I'd love to see a reaction to this album in its entirety and their latest release Hushed and Grim, which in my opinion is their Magnum Opus and truly shows how far their technical abilities have come and how much range they have as a progressive band. In my opinion, they're the greatest band of the 21st century so far........and quite possibly ONE of the most important bands too. I hope in years to come people realise just how special these guys are as musicians. They deserve to be held in the same regard as some of the great genre defining bands of the 60's, 70's and 80's
I will contend, I think they kind of suffer (For me) with an problem with every other album for a while. I loved Cracked the Skye, didn't like The Hunter, liked Once More round the Sun (Even if it kinda sounded like a B side to Crack the Skye, Asleep in the Deep is maybe my favorite Mastodon track and it had a lot of other good songs), then I didn't much care for Emperor of Sands besides Jaguar God, then I loved Hushed and Grim.
@@BallisticMystic I enjoy all their albums, but I would say that The Hunter and Emperor of Sand are by far their weakest. A couple of good songs on each......and for me Hushed and Grim is up their at the top along with Crack the Skye.....all killer and no filler
@@jamesstewart6623 Emperor of Sand has a special place in my heart due to Jaguar God. That song is a great musical journey and gets heavy rotation in my household. Easily one of their top 5 songs for me.
Totally agree,Best discography in metal the last 2 decades and frankly probably one of the best ever. 8 albums and they all range from very good to masterpiece and you can make a strong argument for like half their discog being masterpiece albums. Honestly think you can have any album they’ve released as your personal favorite from them and whichever one you say it’s a valid and pretty reasonable opinion. There’s a reason all their albums have been critically acclaimed and it’s because they’re good as Fuck. Honestly I can’t even named a favorite album from them because I fuckin love them all. 2nd favorite band of all time for me behind only Alice In Chains, 2 bands I can listen to constantly pretty much all of the time.
Yep, same four guys (Brann, Brent, Bill and Troy). Their line-up has remained intact since they formed 22 years ago. Mastodon are the best metal band out there today. Their sheer amount of talent demolishes the rest of the newer metal bands. Also, the depth of their songs and creativity of their overall sound is nothing short of extraordinary.
I've always considered Mastodon to be The Eagles of metal. Like The Eagles they have multiple guys that can sing lead and the drummer is actually the best singer of the bunch. Also, every band member is extremely talented. Mastodon has no weakest link.
Geebz I cannot contain my excitement for this one. the past two slowburns I've been asking for it and you've provided it! Mastodon are my favorite band of all time, I cannot wait to see this one.
Just finished watching, Thanks for the reaction Geebz. If you didn't realize it already, you had already done a reaction to More than I Could Chew on the channel, but that's alright, you were able to pick more out of the song after listening to Mastodon songs in succession anyways! For your next reactions to Mastodon I would love to hear you react to Jaguar God. People in the comments are also begging you to finish off the Crack the Skye album and I am not opposed to that. However, I would love one day for you to listen to their most recent album front-to-back. I have never, NEVER, had an experience in music like listening to Gigantium after listening to Hushed and Grim. Thanks for the reaction Geebz.
Best modern day band. You should do the same for Queens of the Stone Age. I would recomend: Regular John In the Fade Song for the Deaf The Blood is Love Misfit love I Appear Missing The Eagle Has Landed
If you ever have time, you should watch the making of the emperor of sand album by Mastodon on RUclips. It’ll give you an entirely new view on them despite already knowing so much. They’re truly unique. Mastodon and Opeth have been my favorite two bands for decades and have been a huge influence on my life during the good and the bad times. Crack the Skye from start to finish is just the most incredible spiritual journey. Although my personally favorite album is Emperor of Sand…I think lol.
Anyone digging Brann’s vocal would probably enjoy the times he’s done vocals for covers on Two Minutes to Late Night Him singing Over the Mountain by Ozzy is genius
I had a feeling Mastodon would fall into this long form format. I aint mad at it. I work from home so I listen a lot at my desk but I do throw them on during my drives sometimes too. Yay technology! I remember when I had three radio stations to choose from. Now I listen to someone an ocean away dissect music. I think I like this timeline better.
Leviathan is such a fantastic album. You owe it to yourself to listen to this entire album! The triple threat of Naked Burn, Aqua Dementia and the stellar Hearts Alive is incredible.
Keep in mind. 3 vocalists - bassist, drummer, and 1 of the guitarists. Variably you'll hear any 1 of those, any 2 of those, or all 3 harmonizing and or answer-backing. Not to mention any engineering tricks that adds to that.
Yup many people dont know that 75% of mastodon sings regularly on tracks i dont think Bill ever sings but the rest sure do thats especially seen on songs like Oblivion

Crack The Skye is a really powerfully emotional album for me. That last stanza of lyrics from The Czar just hit me like a ton of bricks. Spiraling up through the crack in the sky Leaving material world behind I see your face in constellations The martyr is ending his life for mine I sang along and had myself a nice little weep. Almost had to pull the work van over.

Fantastic job, Geebz, my man! Mastodon is something that is not for everyone, but boy, they are awesome! To see them play this entire album on their Heavenly Skye tour was a highlight of my 47 years of live music experiences. Thanks a ton for doing this! You sucked me in with your Tool Decomposer Lounges, and now you are going down that Mastodon rabbit hole. Enjoy the journey, brother! (BTW, anytime that you hear the higher pitched/ranged voice (backing vocal in Tread Lightly and 75% of More Than I Can Chew, that is Brann Dailor, the drummer)

So glad you're getting to more of these guys, I've gotta echo others in the comments here though, Crack the Skye is definitely a masterpiece of an album and it's awesome to hear you reacting to two songs from it, definitely worth listening to all the way through.
Mastodon is a great band to really sink your teeth into! They have an awesome sense of humour and chemistry between them that really comes through! I highly recommend checking out the video for their song Asleep in the Deep, after eating some gummies!
My favorite band for almost two decades now, so glad you did this one. Two things: - It’s shocking that you’ve yet to check out (as far as I can tell) anything from their Remission album; “March of the Fire Ants” is the song off of it that introduced me to the band, and is still my favorite song of theirs. - Looks like you had a lot of people pushing for “The Czar” and “The Last Baron”, but their true epic masterpiece is “Hearts Alive”, from what I consider their magnum opus, Leviathan. It’s my 1B to “Fire Ants”, and I hope you react to both at some point. Now you’ve done Mastodon, BTBAM and Opeth in long form; do Meshuggah and you’ll have covered my personal Big 4 in depth. Thanks dude!
Megalodon is one of my favorite songs from them. That little pinch harmonic Brent Hinds does towards the middle of the song makes me psychotic in a good way.
I'm really happy for more mastodon on your channel and i love the songs you've picked but you need to check out their song "Jaguar God" too. One of their best pieces in my opinion.
When hearing the Czar for the first time I was walking through my tiny town in the early morning when no one was out and about. No cars or people and it slightly hilly. So I was walking in the street on a cold morning where the silence of the town mixed very well with that ambience you talked about. Almost like a haunting stroll and a dull siren off in the distance. It's one of my favorite memories.
Never clicked so fast in my life! So pumped for this one!! Watching this at home on my Mac while I get some work done. Will rewatch with the gummies later 😄
Fun fact, the guitars are recorded from 3 separate amps simultaneously for the ultimate depth of sound. All different brands and set ups fine tuned to deliver a near sonic sounding guitar expanse. Literally 3 amps sitting next to one a other all with their own mic, combined. Each is fine tuned to create a specific sound when all are together. Genius to say the least.
I love seeing you experience...fresh & untapped...music that I've been listening to, and loved for years. You always have such a definitively easy-going take, and truly enjoy the entire experience, and it's extremely satisfying. Mastodon & Tool are 2 of my top 5 bands on the planet, and they're both my everyday go-to's, when I don't have anything specific, in mind. I've heard every album, back-to-back, hundreds of times, now...and as much as I love it all... I know I can never go back to that FIRST time, really diving into each album...each track...hearing it as brand new. So I envy you, a lot. You are the embodiment of what great RUclips content should be, so thanks for what you do.
As far as I know Mastodon never changed band members and there are also three members of the band who contribute vocals. This was absolutely fantastic.
I still remember, to this day, my buddy passing me one of his earbuds as we rode the bus to our UIL One-Act Play competition, back in 2009, senior year of high school. He just said, "Listen to this shit" and hit play, and I was hit with the opening track of Crack the Skye. I had heard Leviathan and Blood Mountain already, so I was expecting to hear Brent or Troy's usual vocal fare, but that opening track, Oblivion, opens with verses from Brann. It was the first time I had really heard him sing, and it was amazing. We listened to the whole album on that ride, and even in mono it was magnificent. Crack the Skye really cemented Mastodon as one of my all time favorite bands. Brann's lead vocals on that album was really a treat, and I think the decision to give him more and more focus as a vocalist has been a huge part of the bands more mainstream success. He's a much more traditional style of vocalist than Brent or Troy, and that has allowed them to expand their music. Thanks for the video as always Geebz!
It's wake and bake watching this. I work evenings and nights so this is a great way to start the day. Mastodon is always a great hit no matter what song it is. \m/

It’s refreshing when you hear that one in a thousand band that can continue to evolve their sound, while still sounding like the exact same band.
Spiritbox agrees. And so do I. 🤘😉
LOVED watching Geebz' brain melt out his ears during The Last Baron.
Same!
Also, bless you for starting with Megalodon!
Love the vocals in More Than I Can Chew. Definitely haunting. Love that the drummer can sing too.
Brann is the fuckin man, very special musician. Everyone in the band is top tier skill level.
Great song, great film clip
Blue Walsh is an absolutely beautiful and underrated Mastodon song to check out. It's on the release before their latest album and is most like Crack the Skye. You can hear their drummer's hauntingly pretty voice paired with the steel string.
I love that one too.
I loved Cold Dark Place. Really creative and different to their usual style. Brent Hinds wrote those songs for a solo project that never happened, and the guys in the band heard it, and thought it was far too good not to be made into a proper record.
Good call
The Last Baron! 🤘
They're so good, soo good. One of the best modern metal bands that keep their standards up every time they create songs, also killer riffs and drums. You gotta check one of the most important bands to Mastodon, Neurosis.
Yes to Neurosis!
I never watched a better reaction video
43:08 is my favorit moment
Still here, listening in my living room while gaming.
I've always considered Mastodon to be The Eagles of metal. Like The Eagles they have multiple guys that can sing lead and the drummer is actually the best singer of the bunch. Also, every band member is extremely talented. Mastodon has no weakest link.
The entire Crack the Skye album is one song bleeding into the next. One of my favorite albums of all time because of this reason
A month ago I didn't even know this band, I can't believe I've never heard of it, they are one of the best bands I've ever heard!
@@Meowmeow0506 man.. Gigantium hits like a truck after the whole album, happy tears were running galore.
Best modern day band.
You should do the same for Queens of the Stone Age.
I would recomend:
Regular John
In the Fade
Song for the Deaf
The Blood is Love
Misfit love
I Appear Missing
The Eagle Has Landed
YES! Can’t agree more. A deep dive into Queens has almost unlimited potential.
You forgot about "vampyre of time and memory"
Yes! I Appear Missing is a must!
For these Slow Burns I save them for the weekend so I can just chill on the couch while watching.
I am sitting in my sailboat in the Finnish archipelago while listening to this.
LOVE THAT!!
Troy Sanders is the lead singer bass player I know they all share vocals but I still consider him the lead vocalist
How do you not call this session a NAKED BURN?!?! C'mon Geebz you missed your opportunity there!!! HAHA love the reactions!!
LOL!!! AWWWRIGHT!!
@@KeyOfGeebz “Naked Burn” is a killer song off of their Leviathan album if you were wondering!!
@@mr.steinhaus6014 The most killer intro ever also!!
Anyone digging Brann’s vocal would probably enjoy the times he’s done vocals for covers on Two Minutes to Late Night
Him singing Over the Mountain by Ozzy is genius
I had a feeling Mastodon would fall into this long form format. I aint mad at it.
I work from home so I listen a lot at my desk but I do throw them on during my drives sometimes too. Yay technology! I remember when I had three radio stations to choose from. Now I listen to someone an ocean away dissect music. I think I like this timeline better.
Leviathan is such a fantastic album. You owe it to yourself to listen to this entire album! The triple threat of Naked Burn, Aqua Dementia and the stellar Hearts Alive is incredible.
Hearts Alive is otherworldly; as far as epics go, The Czar and The Last Baron are great but just don’t reach the heights of Hearts Alive.
Geebz!!!! I have hounded you about Mastodon for a year now! Today is my birthday!!! Thank you sir!!!🤘♥️🤘♥️🤘
🎉AWWWRIGHT!!
@@christophercombs7561 bill does some of the backing vocals live for their older stuff (not sure about studio though). He does the “white whale holy grail” on blood and thunder and “bone grave bone engraved” on March of the fire ants for instance
@@Tritonianyeti3 Some of it is him on studio. Anything that Scott Kelly does on album he usually does live too. White whale is Scott on album for example
@@Samurai_N00b I could be wrong, but if I remember correctly that wasn’t Scott, it was Neil from clutch. He also does the whole bridge (split your lungs with blood and thunder). But other than that yeah. He even does the vocals for that part in the music video
Love that his ended with More Than I Can Chew.
That being said, am I going crazy? I swear I watched him do More Than I Can Chew before lol
I'm always still here!
Aw man I frigging love Megalodon. That thrashy riff midway through is just the biggest headbanger part ever I swear
Oh, how I miss that era of Mastodon.
The Czar is such an amazing composition of vocal and musical arrangements. It's easily one of their best songs.
Crack The Skye is a really powerfully emotional album for me. That last stanza of lyrics from The Czar just hit me like a ton of bricks.
Spiraling up through the crack in the sky
Leaving material world behind
I see your face in constellations
The martyr is ending his life for mine
I sang along and had myself a nice little weep. Almost had to pull the work van over.
Haven't watched yet but I already know I'm in for a treat seeing the songs he's covering. Thank you for making my work day a little more enjoyable, Geebz!
The Czar and The Last Baron in the same episode??!
A blessing for real🤲🏽
The fusion part, where the brain melt occurred during The Last Baron, was like a tribute to Zappa
I'm still here. Love the long videos
I'm a Data Analyst in Business Intelligence, and i watch your channel while I'm on the computer all day, working from home :)
Oh boy...over an hour of Geebz talking about Mastodon. Out fuckin standing lol
To answer your initial question, I'm a truck driver/mechanic by nature. So, driving my truck I watch/listen...when turning wrenches i get my ear buds and listen. Love the long form stuff Geebz.
So glad you're getting to more of these guys, I've gotta echo others in the comments here though, Crack the Skye is definitely a masterpiece of an album and it's awesome to hear you reacting to two songs from it, definitely worth listening to all the way through.
little late to the party, but love this slow burn. Just started getting into Mastodon recently and these were great choices. I'm still here!!
I'm so happy to see that The Czar is in this video!
Mastodon is a great band to really sink your teeth into! They have an awesome sense of humour and chemistry between them that really comes through! I highly recommend checking out the video for their song Asleep in the Deep, after eating some gummies!
My favorite band for almost two decades now, so glad you did this one. Two things:
- It’s shocking that you’ve yet to check out (as far as I can tell) anything from their Remission album; “March of the Fire Ants” is the song off of it that introduced me to the band, and is still my favorite song of theirs.
"More than I Could Chew" is nothing short of EPIC...what an absolute masterpiece!!!!
Megalodon is one of my favorite songs from them. That little pinch harmonic Brent Hinds does towards the middle of the song makes me psychotic in a good way.
I always listen to these slow burns while developing film in my bathroom! Love it
I'm really happy for more mastodon on your channel and i love the songs you've picked but you need to check out their song "Jaguar God" too.
Just chilling at home with a glass of red wine, thanks for the content!
Mastodon are just those guys man no doubt
I can’t sit still for 10 minutes yet I’ve watched this whole thing
Ditto everything from everyone in the comments. Love Mastodon. Love the slow burn format. Love you. Keep it coming!
MASTODON!!!!!!! YEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!
I'm still here. 🤘🏻
DUDE!!!! You're doing it!!!! Heck yeah!!!! I'm excite!!!!! AWWWRIGHT 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
Really wish you would have hit Jaguar God, but awesome selection non the less
Yeah. He should do JG instead of " more than i could chew", because he already did this song a few weeks ago
I watch these videos while I workout, or when I do some brain-dead work :)
It's wake and bake watching this. I work evenings and nights so this is a great way to start the day. Mastodon is always a great hit no matter what song it is. \m/
Love these deep dives. The tracklist has me very excited. The additions to the channel have all been great!
Did nobody else notice that he already do more than i could chew?
Glad you like them!
So I have you playing in my earbuds while I'm at work. This is a nice channel to listen to while I'm working on the computer.
Hahaaaah. Can't believe it. After all the suggestions in your comments, you finally decided to go ahead and go full steam into a big part of their discography xD Nice one! My fav band for sure! 🤘
PLS do another one of these with Mastodon!!
As you can see, the community is here fot it \m/
Still here!!! Amazing analysis as always Geebz!
I drive for ups and play your videos as I'm delivering. You help me get through the day!
Man I love Mastodon riffs - Brent Hinds is a wizard! And the vocals are all so unique and awesome. Imagine playing all those notes on drums and singing lead vocals at the same time. Massively underrated band if you ask me. Oh, and I'm listening to this while im "working from home"
Don't discredit Bill! He writes a lot of their riffs. Probably most of them nowadays.
I'm still here Geebz, thanks for making me re-learn to sit, take time and discover new music with you! Doing it way too rarely these days
Always stay till the end. I drive at work 8hrs+ a day, so that's my listening time. Mastodon is an amazing band that doesn't get the attention they deserve. Also love how they all share vocals. I don't know how Brann does it. Next coming of Neil Peart to me 🤙
Still here. Thanks Geebz!
WHOA. Didn't watch yet but excited
Bout to watch the Last Baron!! Pumped!! 🤘🏻🤘🏻
Still screaming along with Megalodon like it's 2004 over here !
I've been waiting for this. The Last Baron is my favorite song and Crack The Skye is my favorite album.
You're a rad dude, Geebz :D Love your videos and knowledgable insight from a producers point of view.
Greetings from Norway!
Awesome! Thank you!
There is so much talent in this band and I’m so glad they found each other.
Brann, the drummer, is pretty well known for his fills. He has a few videos up on the Meinl youtube channel that I highly recommend watching at some point.
Ok, I have a problem. This is AWESOME mucic. I remember looking into Mastodon years ago like around 2006 ish or something. And I wasn't a fan. But now hearing it, this is just amazing stuff! I love this! Where have I been 😂
Have a killer weekend, Adam :)
I haven’t always been a fan, but looking at their history, they’ve come along way since then! They have so many tools and talents at their disposal and they’re only getting better
Same here.. I dipped a toe in about eight years ago, and I could tell it was great music, but I just wasn’t ready.
I saw them live with Gojira recently, and it unlocked them for me. They were relentless, and shockingly good. I loved Troy’s stage presence. Now I can’t get enough. Guess I’m ready now for what they’re bringing.
The lead guitarist is also a banjo player, that was the little country bit you picked up on in Megalodon lol
ahhh, that explains the little section :)
Yea first learned to play the banjo then went to guitar
Wow! Mastodon is my favourite band, i know that the records are quite different, and the three voices are different, but i love the music they do...and this is a great video by the way, thank you for taking the time to do this kind of stuff
