    The drummer's sister committed suicide after being bullied while they were both really young and this song is about him blaming himself for her death at the time. The song is supposed to reflect a sort of fragmented mind state that he was in as a child which explains the abrupt transitions and tempo changes throughout the song. He loved his sister so much to the point that apparently he got really fucked up on drugs and tried to dig up his sister's grave with his bare hands because he missed her so much which is where the lyric "I tried to bore a hole into the ground, breaking all the fingers and the nails from my hand" came from. Oh, and his sister's name was Skye which is why the album is named what it is.

      I thought Crack The Skye was the song about Brann's sister, Oblivion is about astral projection.

    • @spr35441
      @spr35441 6 лет назад +78

      JoRdOguitarman1 The entire album is about a boy astral projecting back to Czarist Russia, getting captured to be used for a Divination ceremony, and getting rescued and saved by Rasputin but the lyrics for Oblivion and Crack the Skye have dual meanings to fit both the concept narrative but also to pay tribute to his sister.

    Never seen so many butthurt fans in one place...
    What we want is unbiased opinions and genuine reactions from people who try to understand and appreciate genres they don't usually listen to. And that's what we get.
    To those talking about them not liking a song for the technicality or the originality it has, you confuse two things : opinion and analyze. An opinion is subjective and an analyze try to be as objective as possible. They understand when a song/"piece" is complex or has original pattern (against their current music background) but they tell us what they feel or understand when discovering a song for the first time.
    To those saying they can't understand the deepness of a band because they only heard 2 or 3 songs, understand the concept/format we have right now is based on discovering new groups and going through all aspects of a genre. They can't do that (Well if you do that one day it would be hilarious to go through Frank Zappa, John Zorn or even Buckethead discography for example, hope you have time! haha)
    To those sad about them not liking a song you like, well... As someone who love music in all forms and love to listen to weird genres for most people, such as free jazz or "musique concrète", you can't always convey the joy you had listening to something and be sure the person in front of you understand through his feelings the same thing. That's why music is fascinating, any song can provoke so many different feelings for each person.
    Thank you for what you're doing Lost In Vegas, keep it real!

    • @clausiusclapeyron7873
      @clausiusclapeyron7873 6 лет назад

      it's definitely not unbiased, and pretty soon they can't say this type of music isn't what they usually listen to ;)
      but I get your sentiment and agree

      @patjam2106 6 лет назад +2

      Good comment, spot on...as someone who loves heavy music be it high on fire, tool, etc and prog rush, yes, crimson etc. I am shocked that I do not like Mastodon but it just does not resonate with me, can't pinpoint it but it just doesn't. And people getting upset that someone doesn't like what they like blows my mind... the whole point of this is to experience someone else's opinion, at least it is for me.

    • @f.b.4226
      @f.b.4226 6 лет назад +1

      Well "unbiaised opinion" is an oxymoron, I made a mistake translating my thoughts in english sorry ^^
      What I wanted to say is more like they try to keep an open-minded approach and express their opinions without any barrier/filter!
      I agree they'll start to like songs they didn't really like at first but it's all about the discovery and the first listening here! Maybe after they think they have enough background they'll try to dig back some recommendations or niche genre of metal! Who knows!

    The whole album is about the death of the drummer Brann Dailor’s sister, Skye.
    Mastodon, I feel, are an album band, not singles. Pull the song out in isolation and it makes little sense. You’ll like Emperor of Sand, their latest LP. It’s not as proggy.

    Took me a couple times of listening to this song to really get into it. Then it grabbed me. Kind of the point of Mastodon is that they're progressive. They change up what they're doing mid-song, and put together unorthodox song structure/transitions.

    Guys, not everything is about smooth transitions and progressions. The abrupt change is to throw you back into the verse, it’s on purpose. It’s weird, I think these first listen videos really suit punchy songs with instrumental and vocal hooks, but stuff like this I don’t think is as suited. Specifically with this its a big ol’ concept album with twists and turns. As an example, on Pimp A Butterfly ‘King Kunta’ is catchy but for me songs like “u” are where the real meat of that album is.
    Anyway, metal has a lot of offbeats, dissonance and things that seem challenging at first but like whisky, you come to appreciate it. But if it’s a playlist of bangers you’re looking for then all good!

    A lot of prog has these abrupt changes. The reason for them is indeed to throw the listener off, and prog songs are not designed keeping groove in mind. Abrupt changes are difficult for the listener, and even more difficult to play - which prog is sometimes about - technicalities.

    One thing to consider is that some songs really require more than one listen. That doesn't work for a reaction obviously, but if you knew the song really well the transitions wouldn't feel so abrupt. You would expect them and already know how to switch your groove while you head bang along to match the transitions.
    I don't just mean this song. A lot of these complicated prog tunes are like this. Unlike most other genres these tracks are often designed complex enough to only truly be understood after many detailed listens. As a prog metal drummer myself, just something to consider.
    I love watching you guys discover metal! Keep it up :) Your choice of hip hop is killer too. Have discovered several artists I really dig.
    You probably have too much music to listen to already, but I think you guys would get lit on fire by Brooklyn based metal hip hop jazz fusion group "Candiria", their recent song "Blood". Some of the fattest grooves in all metal.

    Some of these Mastodon comments have been cracking me up: "Guys! You NEED to do Blood and Thunder by Mastodon!! IT's the greatest song of all TIME!!" They don't like it: "Who recommended Blood and Thunder?! You need to check out OBLIVION! It is THE Mastodon song!!" They don't like it: "Oblivion was a poor choice, you REALLY need to check out Curl of the Burl!"
    Guys... it's pretty clear they don't really care for this band. That shouldn't change your own opinion of a band in any way whatsoever, we all like different stuff, and no band is for everyone. That's totally okay. But you guys who are still pushing for Mastodon at this point are beating a dead horse; it makes more sense to start pushing for different bands so these dudes have opportunities to check out new stuff they could really love.

      They don't like the production, they keep wondering if the sound is muffled. I think this is just how it is produced. I appreciate Mastadon (especially the drummer) as great musicians but it is hard to pick out the instruments in most of their songs and I don't find them that creative. Whether it is on purpose or not, the sound is muffled.

      I think almost everyone is wrong on this one. There's a lot of newer mastodon that they would probably like a lot more. Mastodon changed their songwriting style a good bit and have been focusing on the chorus a lot more lately. They'd like some newer songs I'm sure. Their old stuff just isn't accessible.

    Mastodon is an absolutely phenomenal metal band! This album is very deep and is an homage to the drummer's sister who committed suicide, and a story of a child who is paraplegic who astral travels so deeply that he loses his "silver cord" that ties himself to his body. The boy in astral travel meets the spirit of Rasputin who helps the boy return to his body before his body dies... essentially. All of Mastodons albums are deep deep deep. One of my all time favorite bands!!!

    Greetings from your newish fan who had to make RUclips account just because of your channel! Glad that you guys gave Mastodon second change after the not so mindblown reaction from Blood and thunder. For me the whole Crack the skye album and specially this song is one of the most important musical releases to this date. This album got me hooked to the band instantly and after that I began to somehow really enjoy they earlier stuff too (i had seen them twice live as Iron Maiden and Metallica support and heard their ealier record but still wasnt impressed). Theres lots of other bands that I have felt sameway on a first listen but later became fan hearing them in a different place and mindset of a life. No one should force himself or others to like any music but I guess our taste just evolves all the time. Strange thing this human mind.
    Btw. I believe you havent still took a dig in the sub-culture of the allmighty stoner-rock/metal/doom. Its the fuzzy journey from raw inyourface guitar driven grooves and psychedelia into bone melting slow riffs bigger than Great wall of China. Can't really promise you like the stuff but would definately love to see your reactions for bands like Electric Wizard, Kyuss, Monolord, Truckfighters.

It's not a band that you're gonna instantly fall in love in, specially if you're not used to progressive sounding bands (imo). This is exactly what I thought your reaction would be. I honestly think many of the recommendations you're getting are people giving you THEIR favorites, and not taking into account your other reactions to try to tailor something to what you guys tend to enjoy. Even though I did vote for Mastodon in the "2nd chance" poll on Twitter, that was because they were the best of four bad choices. If you'd chosen "Curl of the Burl" you would've enjoyed it more than this song. But metalheads have no ear for hooks sometimes, and they don't get why non-metalheads need them. So you were pushed toward oblivion (both figuratively and literally).
    React to "Electric Worry" by Clutch. Pretty please.

    • @BenJohnson0531

      Sacrilegium StormClad I agree, Ryan and George have a strong cross-section of what they enjoy and don’t enjoy, and they’re always open to giving different sounds a chance, so why would people keep suggesting music they repeatedly don’t seem to enjoy? I appreciate everyone having their favorites, but it’s not smart to “initiate” someone to a band on non-commercial songs, especially if that band already has numerous songs that have gotten regular radio/RUclips/mtv rotation over the years and are proven winners.

    I don't think a lot of people pay attention to the type of music you guys gravitate towards. You need to start with their more accessible tunes before you get into their progressive or really heavy stuff. Start with one of their new songs and go backwards through their catalogue ; you'll appreciate it more. Listen to "Show Yourself" or anything off of Emperor of Sand, honestly. You'll dig it. Its catchy, has some groove, and its up your alley.

    Mastodon are (were) a Sludge Metal band (with a very present prog influence). The muffled sound is part of the aesthetic. The abruptness is part of their style, very harsh and chaotic riffs and transitions. It's not an instant like, it's a grower for sure. With that said, Mastodon were on the for front of innovation, defying the types of mainstream sounds and song structure. Their first 4 albums are regarded as some of the most influential and best in metal of all time.

    Discovered this band by complete chance on a South African airlines flight. This song was pivotal in my journey of harder subsection of rock and metal
