    This song is about the drummers sister Skye. Hence then album title “Crack the Skye”. She died from an overdose I believe. The song is about his guilt for not being there for her. The line about digging into the ground, was a reference to when the drummer was on L.S.D and he though she was still alive and he tried to dig her from her grave.

      @juhaliza correct
      Dailor has also said that "Crack the Skye" is meant as an homage to his sister, Skye Dailor, who committed suicide at age 14.
      "My sister passed away when I was a teenager and it was awful, and there's no better way to pay tribute to a lost loved one than having an opportunity to be in a group with my friends and we make art together. Her name was Skye, so Crack the Skye means a lot of different things. For me personally, it means the moment of being told you lost someone dear to you, [that moment] is enough to crack the sky."

      The whole entire album is about the whole entire thing. To explain it in depth, on the surface the album is a concept about a quadrepalegic boy who astral projects into space. He flies beyond the sun, cutting the golden umbilical cord connecting him to his body, so he's sort of a spirit lost in the swirl of time-space. Some shamans come together to perform a ritual to summon his spirit, and they summon him into their time, the shaman being the people who had just assassinated the Czar Rasputin in Russia in the early 1900s. The boy meets the spirit of Rasputin shortly after he dies, and Rasputin helps guide him back to his body. Beyond that surface level, it's supposed to have a double meaning of a cathartic outlet for Brann Dailor wishing he could project himself back in time and save his sisters life, giving himself instead. ""The martyr is ending his life for mine""
      There's all sorts of other levels like how Brann was laying on her grave after trying to dig it up and looked up in the sky and saw his sisters face in the stars "I see your face in constellations", etc etc. and yeah. There you have it. It's very heavy stuff, which is why they usually don't play anything off that album live anymore. The sheer emotional weight of having to perform songs about that topic.

    You guys are actually changing how I watch reaction videos. I know this is probably a little narrow-minded, but I only ever used to watch reaction videos for songs or bands that I like because I was only interested to see how someone’s reaction might compare to my own. But with you guys, I’ve started watching your reaction videos whether I know the song or not because I find your conversations afterwards so interested, particularly as they usually pertain to your beliefs and experiences outside of the music alone. I’m sure I’m going to be discovering new music along the road, now, so thank you in advance!

    One of the coolest parts of Mastodon is that 3 of the 4 members of the band do vocals equally. So you got to hear Brann, Brent and Troy do vocals. A really really great band.

  • @judoublegalooo
    @judoublegalooo 6 лет назад +46

    Pretty spot on. The drummer/singer sets the song and the album (it's a concept album) up as
    "There is a paraplegic and the only way that he can go anywhere is if he astral travels. He goes out of his body, into outer space and a bit like Icarus, he goes too close to the sun, burning off the golden umbilical cord that is attached to his solar plexus." The song (and album) are also deeper in that they also deal with a family member who passed when he was younger.

      The entire album is actually about Skye, the concept album was a cover story because Brann didn't want to talk about it publically. The "I tried to burrough into the ground, breaking all the nails and fingers from my hands" is a true story, after she died, he tried to dig up her grave to tell her he was sorry in an alcohol fueled depression rage.

    • @Futants
      @Futants 6 лет назад +1

      " Oblivion" is about Brann Dailors younger sister who committed suicide after being bullied and doubted for her Chronic Fatigue Disorder.
      Skye is actually mentioned on the national cfs site if I recall.
      The way she died, the reasons why and Brann crafting a mystical fantasy story around it for catharsis is what makes Oblivion and the album storyline unique.

    • @SKULLEDBUICK
      @SKULLEDBUICK 6 лет назад +1

      I always thought that was so cool. I've heard plenty of thrash bands do gang vocals where the whole band shouts & stuff, and also bands like Ensiferum & Turisas who do the group chorus things. But, I don't think there are any other bands where more than two members all do lead vocals like this.
      Also, Vin & Sori, Brann (Drummer) sings the verse, Troy (Bassist) sings the pre-chorus & Brent (guitarist) sings the chorus.
      The more stuff you hear, you'll eventually learn to differentiate between them. Troy's got a raspy/strained-sounding voice, Brann does the higher singing stuff & Brent's got that country twang, but also screams sometimes.
      Also, anything pre-2009 (Crack The Skye) won't have Brann in it. Vocally, that was kinda his debut.

      @SKULLEDBUICK 6 лет назад +5

    The thing that gets me about the reason that most people don't like Mastodon, it's the same reason that people like some other bands. Mastodon has changed their theme, their style over the years, and that irritates a lot of the fans that were around at the beginning of their career. I never try to look at a band releasing a new album as, "oh, it better have the same sound as the last album!" I'm all for experimentation with music and I may not like every song that a band puts out once they changed their style up, but I think it's important to be able to have those options available. It makes things interesting. Why keep it all the same?

    • @kuroinamida4630
      @kuroinamida4630 6 лет назад +5

      MetaliTransport I like to compare them to Deftones in that regard. Of course Musicwise these are two worlds but both bands started very hard, very heavy and changed it to sth "calmer" more atmospheric imo. And its more like both bands also have kinda transcended beyond their Defining Genre into a Style of their own.

      A lot of the change in their sound was planned due to themes of the albums earth, air, fire, and water. Not all of their albums have had themes, but 4 sounded different due to the themes.

    • @reggiebannister4098
      @reggiebannister4098 6 лет назад +3

      MetaliTransport The biggest criticism I've heard from people about Mastodon's sound is that their progressions in a lot of songs (mainly in the earlier albums) were too jarring, like they just jammed three or four songs together. My criticism with them is that they've oversimplified their sound since The Hunter. I've got the same problem with Clutch.

      makes me think of Tool. i never liked them growing up but as i went through life. i realized how much each album means something to me..Opiate and Undertow.. raw loud and emotional. AEnema the dark depressing side of life.. at times feeling completely broken and lost.. Lateralus is the growing of my spiritual side of life and realizing what it means to be alive.. thats what i get out of them. 10000 days is amazing too.

    I think animals that are in the wild, trying to survive every day, understands and thinks about death. Trying not to die is a universal situation. When Elephants display sadness at the death of one of their group, or the touching of their bones with those displays, are deeper than what we give credit for.

    I remember my youth and not experiencing death yet, thinking I was invincible. When my father died back when I was like 17 it changed me for good. Before that death was just something that happened to people sooner or later. To be honest when my father was alive I don't think that I truly believed he would die. Death had not happened yet so it's sting had yet to impale. My mom died years later, then my aunt, grandparents and some friends. I think part of innocence is the lack of loss. As a child I had no fear ...now well, fear is everywhere and it is real. Great reaction. Sad song. Peace.

    The gold refers to this umbilical cord that keeps you tethered to your body during astral projection. He flies too far and burns it and becomes lost. Later in the album he makes a deal to receive another body from a martyr

    First, I have to say THANK YOU for FINALLY getting to this song and say once again, how much I love listening to and watching you both break down these songs lyrically; I just don't always have 40+ minutes to spend with you( sad face)
    This song is about Brann Dailor's (The drummer's ) little sister who commited suicide at a VERY young age. Her name was Skye, hence the album title: Crack The Skye. If and when you have time, check out their previous release; Leviathan which is based on Moby Dick.
    This song Oblivion always resonated with me ; at 8 years old my best friends older brother hung himself at age 13. Their parents went through a NASTY, BITTER divorce and both boys were caught in the middle (Mom was hostile to their father and often took it out on them). My friend and I were practically raised together since we were in pre school so, again we were extended family( one got ass whoopin from mom. ALL of us did). Anyway, the death was hard on everyone. Suicide in particular just leaves everyone in shambles just due to so much left unanswered and unresolved. My own father died alone and in misery; he was an alcoholic diabetic and estranged from the family due to his own refusal to seek help and his abusive nature when drunk. We all go though tragedy......thank you both so much for being amazing...btw: MASON JAR @10:26!!!😀

    Also another level the album has a story about someone who's paralyzed. And they he gets a out is by astral traveling so the line where he says "I flew beyond the sun before it was time" he's talking about how the chord connecting his spirit and his body together gets burnt off and sends him on this whole journey blah blah blah, anyhoo that's what that line means, also the guy singing in the start of the song is the drummer Brann Dailor who is my favourite singer in Mastodon, I love his voice alot

    Bret hinds wrote that song during his recovery from a motorcycle accident, i think he actually wrote on his girlfriend's house. So basically it was kind of bret's regrets and depression in life compiled into one song. That accident must have made him remember that he has alot to loose in life. Funny how someone's dark times can turn into a big hit. This became one of their best songs. And correct me if im wrong but i think they are the only metal band right now which 4 of the members are actually singing too.and yes clutch and mastodon are kinda the same. Cause mastodon's genre is sludge metal. And clutch is stoner rock. Sludge is basically the heavier version of stoner rock.

    Mastodon use to be super heavy, but they've been going through the "trying to find our own style" all 4 band members sing at certain times, in this song it's just the Drummer, Bassist, and Lead Guitarist, Next song you need to hear is either Blood and thunder, or Crack the skye. Oblivion is from the album "Crack the Skye", the whole album was written about the Drummer (Brann)'s sister (Skye) who killed herself when he was a child.

    The album this is from can be interpreted in different ways. it's a concept album with a crazy space/astral projection/time travel story but also a tribute to the drummer's sister "Skye" who killed herself when she was just 14. The album is called "Crack the Sky" but Sky is spelled with a e at the end. So there may be references in this song to his sister.
    This song is also about being lost in space.

    You were quite close to being spot on; *_"I tried to burrow a hole into the ground / Breaking all the fingers and the nails from my hands"_* -- (from: genius.com/3019541 ) : "This line is about Brann Dailor’s sister, and is a reference to something that actually happened to him. After her death, he developed a painful drug addiction, and one night while extremely high he found her grave and started desperately digging to find her coffin, as he couldn’t believe that she was dead. He gave up halfway and lay down in the dirt, looking upward, and had a vision of his sister looking down at him from the stars, telling him that everything would be okay (this latter part is referenced multiple times later on the album)."

    For the underground show. Either In De Naam Van De Duivel or The Possession Process by Carach Angren. They're a symphonic black metal band that writes their albums as horror stories. These two work as stand alone songs though. Think you guys will love em.
    And Babel's Gate by Septic Flesh. Symphonic Death metal and you'd get a kick out of the lyrics.
    Also you guys need to do the whole of Damnation And A Day by Cradle Of Filth. Best Cradle album in my opinion and the album tells the story of Satan before his fall all the way to his defeat. Seeing how you guys dissect this stuff is amazing.

    Not sure if anyone else has stated this so far, but I'll add my understanding here.
    Flew beyond the sun before it was time - this is a reference to Astral Projection. The narrator is talking about floating through space astrally, beyond their body.
    Burning all the gold that held me inside my shell - the gold cord that connects the astral self to the physical self.
    Effectively, when that gold cord, or connection, is burned away you have trouble getting back to your body. The narrator is now floating through the oblivion of space. And this is at a moment of sadness, and reflection, on a specific event in their life. I believe it all references the loss of a family member.
    I love the depth you both will go in trying to understand the lyrics and themes in all the songs you review, but especially in metal. Often overlooked or misunderstood, metal is deep and meaningful, effectively the antithesis of most pop music.
