5:40 the layering you're hearing is Troy (the bassist) being layered under Brann (the drummer and lead singer on this song). Brann, Troy, and Brent (Lead guitar, sings the bridge on this song) trade off lead vocal duties song to song, and even verse to chorus to bridge, with I THINK all of them (not sure about Brann) able to do harsh vocals as well, which is mainly on their earlier stuff. Bill (Rhythm guitar/riff master) also does backing harsh vocals occasionally live. No dedicated singer, they all have amazing really unique voices.
Idc what people say. This is still my favorite Mastodok song from the past couple albums so I am stoked it was done! Brann is such an amazing drummer and to be able to sing that well while drumming still impresses me every time.

Yay Mastodon! Not so much a rabbit hole as a wormhole! As you probably know from earlier comments: - vocal duties are shared and each has an amazing voice, and all very different. Unbelievable that they also shred on their respective instruments while they're singing! As a result every song (or section of a song) has a different vocal quality depending on who is singing lead. - Early albums are heavier (Remission, Leviathan), mid albums are proggier (Blood Mountain, Crack The Skye), later albums are more straight up rock, with a bit of psychedelia (The Hunter, Once More Round The Sun, Emperor Of Sand). I'd recommend something from each "phase". For the early stuff listen to Blood and Thunder, For the middle phase (being my personal favourite) try The Czar, Last Baron, Capillarian Crest, Crack The Skye. For the later stuff try Octopus Has No Friends, Stargasm, High Road. Nice!
Thanks for the detailed info... I've dipped into later Mastodon but I love the fact that they are always changing, so will check out some earlier stuff 🤘
I would love for you to check out some of their other stuff! Oblivion is another good one with clean vocals, but either The Last Baron or Crack The Skye (the song) would be fantastic for you to give your opinion on. They’re probably my favorite band, so this is great that you’re started down this rabbit hole!
Couple of my favorites are Seabeast and Iron Tusk off their Leviathan album, that's by far my favorite album by them everything is awesome, I first seen Mastodon live back in 2006 when they were touring with Lamb of God and Slayer and they played a ton off that album and I was hooked, was my favorite band for a couple years there lol.
Seabeast is incredible. I just saw them twice on their tour with Lamb of God. It was so much fun to be 20 feet away from Brent and Troy for the entire Leviathan album.
Ayy Mastodon finally! I know you liked my comment suggesting them so it was just a matter of time ;) thank you! Definitely circle back on these guys. Their style is distinct but they've got some really diverse and awesome stuff. Do one of their long songs like Last Baron, The Czar, or Jaguar God next if you can!
I'm still here The funny thing about you choosing this song, I'm assuming at random, is how much Mastodon has changed over the years. When they hit the big time with their breakout album Leviathan, they were much less about vocals. Each album since then they've gotten more and more melodic, as the singers got more confident. The band had a hard time as they got started finding a singer they all were happy with, and they eventually settled on sorta sharing vocals, with none of them claiming to be a good singer. The principal singer here is the drummer, in the early albums, he almost never sang, it was more the bassist and one of the guitarists. If you do another Mastodon song, I recommend something off that early album, let you hear how much they've changed. There's some great new stuff out of these fellas, but there is magic on that early record.
There is magic on all their records... Don't love this latest album, but... you know I'm right! Well said though, I agree with you! Brann Dailor (spelling?) is perhaps one of the greatest metal drummers around (that statement is a can of worms on its own.. I just love his style). Any song that showcases his abilities more would be welcome.
Really happy to see some Mastodon decomposed, thanks Geebz 😎 What I get from Mastodon is an atmosphere - something like the definition of 'maelstrom' or 'bedlam'. Primeval themes like leviathans, jaguars, mountains - the stuff that early civilizations feared and deified - Mastodon bring that to life. I'd definitely recommend earlier albums from an analytical point of view, they're best taken as a whole but plenty of songs stand on their own - The Czar, The Last Baron, This Mortal Soil being some of my favorites. Keep it up anyway and thanks again 👌🏻
It's been in my top Mastodon songs for a while! It's catchy but has a sick riff! I love the instrumental and as a guitarist, WOW! I INSTANTLY fell in love with the tone and effects used on the riff that starts the song up. That riff all throughout is so sweet
I'm still here. Great review of a truly remarkable band. I have seen a lot of the comments already mention a handful of their tracks. I would definitely recommend any of their material but I personally love the album "Crack The Skye" (top to bottom). The emotional journey through that album really speaks to me and I'm sure many other listeners. Looking forward to more videos. Thank you so much for doing this.
Such a variety of songs and sounds from Mastodon. All their albums are great. I am partial to the albums Blood Mountain, Leviathan, and Once More Round the Sun, but I'm sure that songs off of Crack the Skye will be popular requests from people
A more catchy song of theirs but a great one nonetheless! Have seen these guys 6-7 times and, though some people decry their mainstream appeal, I love seeing 'em play and have yet to find an album I don't enjoy in some way! Their first four albums are a lot heavier and more conceptual. Crack the Skye is proggy 12 minute shred fests, Leviathan a sludgey retelling of Moby Dic, and Blood Mountain is a heavy metal peyote trip. Keep digging, great analysis. As usual, I've learned something now about songs I've been into for years!
I'm still here! I'm a huge mastodon fan so it's super exciting to hear your opinion on them and to see your reaction. Some songs by them that I reccomend are The Czar, Jaguar God, Ember City, and Ancient Kingdoms. Thanks for the great content!
The “layering” you hear in the vocals is most likely the fact that 3 of 4 of the guys are lead singers. Face tattoo, bass and drums. Such a kick ass band
Hey Geebz, ALOHA. I know you're having just as much fun as we are. Stoked for getting back into Meshuggah Clockworks Drumcam soon and also listening to Enslaved Havenless for the first time 🤘 I can't say it enough that you won't regret it
Hey Geebz, I'm still here.... please listen to Pain of Salvation whenever you return to new bands! I'm sure you'll love them! song names: Idioglossia and Her Voices! Cheers and....Aloha!!!
Stupid me, for not searching before commenting about the possibility of Mastodon, on a more recent video. Glad to see you breaking down and enjoying this song, which I love. That said...there is sooooooooo much more and varied Mastodon to hear, which brings me to another suggestion that maybe hasn't been considered. Maybe have a comprehensive, long-form video where you take a song from each album, and are able to analyze the progression of a band like this from inception to present. You could put up polls and have viewers pick the songs, and each winner would get a video, giving the band a chronological video essay of your thoughts. If you ever decide that's something you'd be interested in, it would be amazing. Thanks again for all your efforts in this.

Love how raw your videos are Geebz. Refreshing to see a reaction without a million edits!
I appreciate that YBM!
I would love for you to check out some of their other stuff! Oblivion is another good one with clean vocals, but either The Last Baron or Crack The Skye (the song) would be fantastic for you to give your opinion on. They’re probably my favorite band, so this is great that you’re started down this rabbit hole!
Love getting the notifications when you upload especially when you pick band like mastodon! Keep up the great work
Couple of my favorites are Seabeast and Iron Tusk off their Leviathan album, that's by far my favorite album by them everything is awesome, I first seen Mastodon live back in 2006 when they were touring with Lamb of God and Slayer and they played a ton off that album and I was hooked, was my favorite band for a couple years there lol.
Would love to hear you react to Ghost of Perdition from Opeth. I think you would find a lot of goodies in that song.
I haven't ever listened to Mastedon but I'm going to go through their stuff after listening to this, it's really good.
Crack the Skye is a great album...check out the Czar and Last Baron.
I'm still here
The funny thing about you choosing this song, I'm assuming at random, is how much Mastodon has changed over the years.
Really happy to see some Mastodon decomposed, thanks Geebz 😎
What I get from Mastodon is an atmosphere - something like the definition of 'maelstrom' or 'bedlam'.
Please do Heart's Alive!
It's been in my top Mastodon songs for a while! It's catchy but has a sick riff! I love the instrumental and as a guitarist, WOW! I INSTANTLY fell in love with the tone and effects used on the riff that starts the song up. That riff all throughout is so sweet
Amorphis, Soen, Cellar Darling Etc.... so many bands for you to find. I Envy that you get to listen to them for the first time. 😊
I love this song. No one really covers this song and it's one of my fav's from them! This is one of the one's that their Drummer sings lead on.
Always good to see an upload!
Such a variety of songs and sounds from Mastodon. All their albums are great. I am partial to the albums Blood Mountain, Leviathan, and Once More Round the Sun, but I'm sure that songs off of Crack the Skye will be popular requests from people
Leviathan is one of my perfect albums.
Thanks, excellent video!
Watched the whole thing (so I'm still here).
Any other Mastodon coverage would be great!
Mastodon is awesome, I’d like to see yu do Mr. Bungle at some point, specifically “Goodbye Sober Day” :)
Can't get this song out of my head, glad you reacted to it. Always picking the most obvious songs gets boring fast, so this one was a treat.
Great reaction \ decomposition as usual. Keep it up!
Do the czar by mastodon
I'm still here! I'm a huge mastodon fan so it's super exciting to hear your opinion on them and to see your reaction. Some songs by them that I reccomend are The Czar, Jaguar God, Ember City, and Ancient Kingdoms. Thanks for the great content!
Mastodon is one of my favorites. There is a ton to explore with them.
I love your analysis of this! More Mastodon please sir!
The “layering” you hear in the vocals is most likely the fact that 3 of 4 of the guys are lead singers. Face tattoo, bass and drums. Such a kick ass band
Wow, that's so cool! What a band!
I like how he's not "guitarist," but rather "face tattoo." 😂
I'm still here! Awesome, Mastodon definitely something to check out more :)
I'm still here - Keep up the good work!
If you're circling back to Gojira, you should check out L'enfant sauvage.
This band is a constant evolution. One of my all time favorite bands of any genre.
React to Crack the Skye, the best album of all time.
thank you for being an awesome dude. i hope all is great man.
I'm still here. Please react to Buckethead: Soothsayer
Still haven’t seen a reaction to “The Patient”. I’d like to see reactions to the 90’s, Alice In Chains, Soundgarden.
Guess you just need to...
Be patient
I'm still here! Thanks for all you do. Divinations by Mastadon is another great track.
Jaguar God
One of my favorites!
Yes this one
My fave band, I’ve been waiting for this
spawn of possession - apparition
Good luck man, Mastodon is a deep pit to dive into! Deffo will need to dive down the rabbit hole.
