Little late to reply but the toms are the way they are because Brann goes through that many skins he usually just puts a set of heads on both sides realising it’s better to just spin them around to a clean skin when the top one gets a bit too busted up rather than change it mid set or god forbid break it
What I think makes Brann stand head and shoulders above many drummers is how he seems to alter the pattern for almost every few bars that they're hardly repeated throughout whole songs. It must keep playing the same songs year after year more enjoyable, rather than copy/paste drum patterns that you could play in your sleep.
I saw them in Hollywood for that tour. They came out, played the entire album note for note all the way thru without speaking one word to the crowd. Then left, came back on and played 2 songs from each previous album, then walked off the stage. All without saying anything to the crowd. Was so epic. One of the best shows I've ever seen.
@@AndrewRooneyDrums Great to hear. Keep up the great reactions. Really like your critical take on technique as well as the styles of drummers you are choosing for your videos!
Of the modern metal drummer I have seen Brann plus Mario (Gojira) are probably the most memorable. Mario is pure power, a beast and Brann has an ability to put in an extra fill where there is no space for one but never makes it sound forced.
That would be a spectacular combo... Brann, and Mario, are two of my favs. I was just listening to Gojira and didn't ever think of this duo. Thanks for the videos
@@Aowyr I'm inclined to agree. Mastodon, as a whole, always caught flak as a band you either loved or hated. A problem with talents, even in the metal community, is simply not giving credit just because it doesn't fit a particular taste.
Sanford and Son was a 70's American comedy that featured Redd Fox. I'm from Atlanta Georgia where Mastodon got their start. They put on a great live show.
God damn his precision is intense, which seems near impossible with how smoothly those rolls flow through. It sounds like liquid drums, as odd as that sounds.
Brann is from Rochester, NY. My old band Buried Beneath opened for his early bands Evisceration and Lethargy in the early 90's and he was one of those drummers where people lined the side of the stage to watch him play. He was a great guy. Haven't seen or talked to him in 25 years and it's great to see him having such success in Mastodon.
i lived in atlanta for about ten years and hung out with all the mastodon dudes and brann and all them are super cool dudes. brann is a great drummer and a really sweet dude lol
Crack the Skye is a literal fucking masterpiece. I saw it live and it was indescribable man. I won tickets to their Heavenly Skye Tour a few years back. I'm also about to see my OTHER fave prog album of all time Parallax 2 by Between the Buried and Me. Life is good
Saw Mastodon live and had no idea he sang too while drumming that was impressive to me. He has to have so much control of his breathing while rocking it on those drums, but he killed it all night.
Seeing these guys live it's honestly impressive how damned clean his playing is. He has this wild, almost improvisational feel to a lot of his fills and rolls (kinda reminds me of Keith Moon a bit) but he plays it note-for-note live as well.
Brann Dailor for one reason or another never gets commonly name checked in the conversation of the great drummers, but he is quite frankly one of the GREATEST drummers of this generation. His gas tank never depletes. He hits with such power, absolute precision and ferocious passion. Absolute monster drummer with such an original style.
him and Danny Carey also jammed together on stage and just performed like a improvised solo together and it was fucking sick. This drummer getting ready to listen to now has some of the best fills I have ever heard. Just wait you'll see!
If you’ve never been exposed to Mastodon, the first 5 seconds of this video gives you all the information you need. Not my favorite band, but the sum of its parts is absolutely insane. Mastodon is a supergroup without any of the side projects.
Tama drums are just king in metal. And yea the toms are inverted because of the mounting. Gives extra height. Doesnt matter which way you play them just swap the heads 😅
You should check out his drum cam of "Stargasm". It's my favorite song of theirs and his fills in it are sublime. Not to mention, he's sings harmony the whole time he's drumming as well.
The album saved my life when I was a dumb teenager who was thinking bad thoughts, and this song in particular didn't get enough love from everyone. Good to see you covering it.
Much respect. Brann has climbed up my list of favorite drummers the last couple years. Thank you for the breakdown! And if memory serves me right, Brann has beat out Danny Carey in a drum publication's annual "Best Drummer - Metal" category in consecutive years. Says TONS!

I used to be bothered by how extra branns playing is, it always sounded like he does too much of everything, until i figured out the drums are not a complimentary but a leading instrument in mastodon's music.
Branns parts always fascinate me considering he is a self taught drummer and somehow mastodon always seem to find a way to throw some intricate riffs/time signatures for him to deal with lol
Redd Foxx ... His famous TV show was Sanford and Son. Before that, he was a stand-up comedian. I was at a poker party, and the host pulled out a Redd Foxx record (vinyl) and played it. Oh, my, funny and raunchy. Supper funny stuff!
They put a bunch of metal drummers, Mario Duplantier, Danny carey, and Brann Dailor on a digital set that measures accuracy and Brann was apparently the most accurate/ in time of them all.
Brann has always struck me as a very stripped down jazz style drummer, which is such an oddity for a metal band. I'm not complaining however, he's one of my favorites as is Mastodon. Compare Brann's setup with someone like Danny Cary for example, and it's night and day. Their styles and kits are very different, and it's not just aesthetic.

Definitely the best metal band that came out after 2000.... best musicianship best Songwriting... simple as that
Rodney Dangerfield and Red Foxx on kick drum. 2 comedy legends. Foxx was in "Sanford and Son", great show.

Mike Portnoy called Brann “The Bill Bruford of Metal”.
