Just replaced my belt at the weekend and after watching your video you saved me a lot of time. I didn't know you could change the belt without taking the tensioner off. Thank you very much. 👍

Thanks very much for the video. I did replace the aux belt last weekend on my Jaguar X-type 2.2 diesel. I just wanted to leave some comments for somebody else that attempts this task. The size of the allen key needed to loosen the top screw for the tensioner is 8mm. I also took the two nuts off the power steering oil reservoir, so that I could lift it out of the way to get my hands down from the top. I have rather slim hands for being an adult and you need it doing this job. It is very fiddly and it took me 4 hour to do, and I'm a fairly competent DIY mechanic. Another tip is to Google the belt layout, make a printout of this and have it handy when you fit the new belt.

Great video. Just did the job on my 2.2 X type and this was a big help. I managed to get the top pulley out without undoing the engine mount- it took a little wiggling but eventually I got it out from underneath.

Hi thanks for your Video. Helped me. Did a few things differently. Lined belt up all round system bottom pulley. Left one bolt Inn turned the pulley till other 2 bolt holes where in sight. Only took one pin out of Alternator pushed Alternator to one side. The only thing I've noticed tensioner. Has like a vibration. I'm guessing this is Correct On your Video I couldn't see what I was looking for once you started it. Everything thing was tight Double checked. It's working fine. Massive Thumbs up.

I've just had to change my belt too. 2.2 Diesel. Getting the belt back on is done easily by getting it into place on all pulleys which have the grooves first. Then, whilst pulling the flat bar to slacken the tensioner, the belt can be slipped easily onto the last top smooth pully without straining the belt at all. Good to know for next time. Thanks for the video.

put the car in gear and wedge the brakes down with a block of wood and pull the seat forward... Then you can much more easily break loose the crank pulley bolts
Your way works really well too!

This is great. My X-Type 2.2D is running really poor when cold, but it's fine once it warms up, and sometimes I can hear a sound like a slipping belt for a second. I've checked a lot of stuff, turbo, EGR, etc, and everything seems fine.
I'm thinking about checking the belt and pulleys next, to see if one of the pulleys is sticking, as the car also cut out once when I locked the steering all the way to one side.
And if nothing else, I suppose it's a good excuse to get down in there around the crankshaft sensor, etc, and see if there's anything amiss..
Do I need one of these special tools to loosen the tension on the belt, or is there an easier "hack" to do it? On my old Peugeot 407 it was just a 15mm or 16mm spanner if I remember correctly.

Really good video, thanks for doing these as I'm not only new to my x-type but also quite a newbie mechanic even though I'm 51! Your videos have really helped me get around the car, my next job is to change the alternator pulley and replace it with an INA 535022310 freewheel clutch pulley as I've read many times in various forums that this not only takes a lot of stress off all of the other auxiliary belt parts making them last longer but has a massive benefit in reducing the rumbling sound you get from the diesel engine and the vibration from the tensioner, this video has given me the confidence to drop out the alternator and get the job done. for anyone else interested there is another video showing how a freewheel clutch pulley improves how the aux belt runs here ruclips.net/video/gXa384YJdL0/видео.html

true story, my original crankshaft pulley fall apart at 200 000 km, it was replaced 7 years ago, together with alternator pulley (with freewheel clutch pulley),
soon I will reach 400 000 km and currently it's still working without problems..

Do you have to remove the air conditioning pump to do this job or did you do it without removing the air conditioning pump?

  • @BensWorkshop

Many thanks, impressive job. My tensioner broke, the bung at the bottom slipped out, so I put it back in with a washer to stop that happening again. From your video it looks like you only took the alternator off to get the tensioner bits removed and replaced but you replaced the belt with everything in place, just forced the belt around the crankshaft pulley at the end by turning it. Was the belt in place on all the idlers?
Also, could you give me the measurements between the pins on your special tool as well as their diameter and length?

    • @pitmonk
      @pitmonk 3 года назад +1

I believe the square socket hole is a 1/2 inch, just like on your socket set. The gap is too small for you to get a normal ratchet or socket bar into there. I guess you plan to make your own bar, you'll want it to be about 18 inch long and with 1/2inch stubs, each between 10 & 15mm long. Your post is 6 months old but maybe this will help someone else. Alternatively, you can buy the bar tool on ebay for about £20 UK.

@@pitmonk Many thanks. I forged a 1/2" square and welded it to a bit of flat to which I welded some rebar. All worked out in the end.

Is no need to faff around trying to hold the crankshaft pulley wheel from rotating with a tool. Simply put the car into sixth gear then jam a stout bar between the removed wheel studs, to stop the pulley wheel rotating through using the gearbox. Is best not to make things more difficult than they need to be.
