Mondeo Mk3 Tdci and Jaguar X-Type (no need for belt tensioner tool) Crankshaft pulley replacement.

  • When changing Mondeo Mk3 Tdci auxiliary belt and tensioner there is no need to buy a tensioner tool. The advice is to change the crankshaft pulley at the same time, but you don't have to change it. The crankshaft pulley bolts can be used up to 3 times. So remove the old pulley and use this method to tension the belt.

    Smart, with a welder 2 10mm screws and a piece of flat bar I made myself the tool needed for the job as I thought no tensioner tool no chance

    Just an update, done what you did and works a treat many thanks. Oh I didn't need too use a clamp as I left the one bolt in but in the 3'o clock position then tuned by hand..

    Used this method this very evening! I could just turn the crankshaft pulley with my bare hands to put in the bolts1 Smart method! Thanks alot!

    Can't believe how simple this has made these belts, we have struggled in the past with all sorts of bolts and bars to open these tensioners.
    Massive thumbs UP thanks mate.
    N.B as the thread within the crank is quite well recessed there is little chance the lesser experienced will cross thread the pulley bolts, BONUS if your concerned.

      You can obviously do this using the original crank pulley, as the 3 stretch bolts can be used up to 3 times. Also an angle gauge is not needed. The settings for the torque are 49nm then 120 degrees. The points on a bolt are 60 degrees apart. After the bolt has been torqued to 49nm you make a punch mark (on the face of the crankshaft pulley) at one of the bolt points. Then make a punch mark (on the bolt head) 2 points anti-clockwise. Tighten up the bolts until the punch marks are aligned.

    You my friend are a lifesaver. Last time I changed this, it took me about 3 hours as I had no tensioning tool. I had to put a jack under the engine, remove mountings, lower the engine and struggle to get the belt off and back on. You method, wheel off, cover off, old pulley off, new pulley on....in my driveway.... 20 minutes. Only hard part was cricking the 3 bolts. For those without a gun like me, I recommend a scaffolding tube. Thank you so much again.

    Many thanks for that, I will give that a go. I made a belt tensioner tool but it does not get the tension off far enough and the Haynes manual says you also have to take off the alternator. I stopped to do research. I am not actually changing anything, I repaired the tensioner and will also use the tool I made as well.

    You can you use a roofers hammer to release the tension on thos belts i have done it my self works great the hammer must have strait claws and be inserted just above the tensioner pulley.

    Great solution! Thanks a lot! It has worked! After reinstalling the pulley, I've noticed that the smaller hole in the center doesn't match with the torx screw on the crankshaft, is it good anyway? possible issues? Thanks a lot

    Be trying this later as I have struggled trying to get the belt on for 30mins without any luck. Pain in the Ase as hardly no room to get any good tools and hands in.

    Good video but i would advise being very carefull with the vicegrips .. if you damage the running surface of the pulley the new belt is going to get eaten away fast runing over the pulley

    • @howardmay1951
      @howardmay1951  4 года назад +2

      Vice grips don't touch the pulley belt running surface, they clamp the belt to the surface. As far as pressure regulation of the grips is concerned, well that is tantamount to riding a bike. You learn over time what pressures to exert. You can plainly see in the video the grips coming off the first time, because I was overly cautious about the possibility of damaging the new belt.

    Imbusy 40T dwie sztuki koniecznie pasują w dziurki najpierw 1 śruba obojętnie jak dwa imbusy i naciągamy na drugą śrubę wykręcamy 1 śrubę i naciągamy w drugą strone wchodzą dwie pozostałe . Sprawdzamy ułożenie paska jak żle leży obkręcamy kluczem aż się ułoży bo inaczej potnie.

    Did you need a puller to remove the crankshaft pulley once the bolts were out, or was it easy enough to pull off the crankshaft without?

    • @howardmay1951
      @howardmay1951  7 лет назад +1

      If you are not changing the pulley then remove 2 of the bolts, then loosen the 3rd bolt just enough for the pulley to come off the boss and drop. No puller needed.

  • @oakfront

    how does this work stephen, if you have got the belt on already, then surely you just tighten up the crank pulley. i'm trying to do mine now, and im struggling. how did you get the crank pulley off, mine is just turning.

    • @howardmay1951
      @howardmay1951  7 лет назад

      oakfront you have to put the car in gear and have someone with their foot on the brake to loosen the crank pulley bolts

    • @oakfront
      @oakfront 7 лет назад

      thanks stephen, i think i need a bigger breaker bar or something, they're being a right pig to get off. were your 3 bolts hard to get off too ? If so , any tips mate ?

    • @howardmay1951
      @howardmay1951  7 лет назад +1

      oakfront I have put a lot more detail in the comments section. You just have find it Someone asked how I did it, and I replied that I used the air impact gun in my workshop. Just make an extension from something like a length of scaffolding. I have several lengths of these yo use with the half inch and three quarter inch sets. The only problem then is having the vehicle up high enough. No problem for me with a 4000kg four poster.

    • @howardmay1951
      @howardmay1951  7 лет назад

      Once you have cracked the bolts with the breaker bar they will undo with just your fingers. you only remove 2 of the bolts. the other bolt you undo until the pulley has enough gap to drop down off the location boss.

    • @fizzyt1803
      @fizzyt1803 5 лет назад

      Putting the car in gear and getting someone to stand on the brakes is usually enough to let you undo the bolts using a big breaker bar.
