I’m 60 years old and like those have said before me, I have never heard such an AMAZING version of this timeless Jim Croce masterpiece. I’m certain he is smiling down on you. I just cannot believe how long it’s been. I’m tearing up listening and remembering. Thank you.
The song is about someone who hasn't come to terms that his best friend and the love of his life ran off together. It's been long enough that "the number on the match book is old and faded", hence why he's calling the operator to get the number. He wants to call the woman mentioned in the song "to show I've overcome the blow and take it well. But I wish my words could convince my heart, but that's not the way it feels".
Yesterday, September 20th, 2021 was the 48th anniversary of Jim's death in a plan crash here in Louisiana. I was a music student at a small university here in Louisiana. I literally bumped into Jim coming out of the music department and at the time I didn't recognize him. Later that evening I was in the auditorium to hear Jim Croce. As he comes out on stage I realized who I had bumped into. The next night he was gone. There were three songs of his that have always stuck with me. This is the best one in my opinion. Thanks for the amazing tribute!
I’ve always been a huge supporter of young talent. Most of my clients I produce are 1/3 of my age. I thrive on their energy and they are inspiring and also say they’re inspired by working with me. We have playlist swaps and I learn as much if not more than they do. These guys have “it”. The joy in their faces as they’re playing this wonderfully brilliant Croce song puts a lump in my throat. They’re not selling anything, they’re not pandering or shamelessly begging for likes, subscriptions or voting for nonsense contests. They’re merely playing music for all the right reasons and it’s tremendously obvious. Please enjoy.
Jim Croce wrote this while doing basic training in the National Guard in 1966, far from home and his new bride Ingrid. While standing in the rain with other guardsmen, each waiting their 3-minute turn at the pay phone, some of whom had gotten Dear John letters or calls (their ladies breaking up with them), Jim was impacted by these stories and the humanity of the occasion. His songs were like that, simple yet profound glimpses of life. Thanks for keeping this one alive!
JusBidniss Had NO clue that was what the song was about!! Thank you so much for letting us in on that wonderful nugget of some of the best songs of my youth❤️ “Time In A Bottle” was sung at my wedding, and the young man did it so eloquently. The memories that a song can bring back. 😊 I remember my first call home in basic at Ft McClellan, Alabama to my Dad...told him I changed my mind and he just laughed and hung up the phone...it was 1970. 🤪 Since he was in WWII when he was 19 and a pilot on the Charles F Hughes destroyer for the NAVY...i can see his point. Well...it was a lonely pity party till i finally figured out the rules and that basic training is all a mind game... after that, was jiggy with it. 👍🏻😁🇺🇸❤️🇺🇸 Still hated the gas chamber....we all know where the call OORAH came from. The sound you make when yanking the mask off and puking your guts out. 🇺🇸
My husband and I r both 58 yrs. He's been introducing me to all these new, young artists. Of course Jim Croce was amazing, but have to say this is a slightly smoother sound that I loved. , Said to my hubby, young people won't even know what the dime was for. Keep it up guys. I'm sure hrs of practice, but I sense real, raw talent too. Can't practice what u don't have. Your love of the music really does show. I second the Bravo. Looking forward to hearing more.
@@JusBidniss ....yeah, I thought the same thing about the dime...and dialing, lol. Someone did a vid on asking 2 young men to dial a certain number using the dial-up type phone. Neither one of them had a clue on how to use the phone, it was hilarious.
This just proves that you dont need computers and vocal harmonizers to create great music. This is the real deal right here and JIM CROCE would be proud to hear his music sung by a new generation. BRAVO......
I learned about your brother by watching youtube videos of him and Jim. I never knew how big a roll he played until I watched as they played together. Maury was amazing and the red head playing in this video is playing his part very well! Toni I think her name is.
Dear Mary, your brother was an authentic genius paired with another one, Jim Croce, to produce perfection. It's funny that at 3:44 Toni Lindgren (the lady playing Maury's licks in this cover) does exactly what Maury used to do at the end of almost every live performance: shake the hair out of his right-eye view. A documentary on Maury Muehleisen, who was 6 years younger than Jim but already an accomplished songwriter and musician when they met, is greatly needed. What amazes me is how Maury (a pianist) improved his guitar skills so quickly and at that level in order to express Jim's melodies so nicely.
I only discovered some of your brother’s work recently - I was a small kid in 1973 - and introduced it to my son, who is 19 but loves music from that area: we both love Maury and Jim and how they write and composed such meaningful lyrics, melodies and layers of sound that expressed emotions in way that perfectly complimented the poetic message. I didn’t know your brother and don’t know you but their music makes me feel connected.
Every time I hear Croce I go back to the 7th grade the day he died. Funny how music can take you back to particular times in life. I was such a fan that I listened to this and a couple others of his other LPs over and over until I wore them out. We lost a true one of the greats that day. I never met him irl but I did in a dream recently! Not sure what brought it on but in the dream he knew me well like an old friend. He called me by my name and gave me a big bear hug like a long lost brother. I was so thrilled to see him and just asked "how you been "Big Jim"? Woke up with a smile on my face at a time I really needed one. What I wouldn't do for another dream like that one. Life is funny, but not always in a haha way. I can be cruel and it can beat you down even when you have done your best. Great job guys, thanks for taking me back and helping me escape for a moment
I am 70 and I love guitar music - as my late brother used to play the guitar and this was one of the songs he loved to sing. Fantastic cover - you did justice to the song and to Jim Croce, legend.
AbiGail1949 I’m 48 and I love these songs I remember my Dad listening too in the 70s. We lost him last year and music like this brings back good memories. I agree, this is a great cover. They all sound great.

Jim Croce really meant a lot to me. When his songs came out, they spoke to many of us. You guys did a wonderful rendition. Thank you for being true to his music.
AZCobraman, I always thought it was “in his pocketful of fun.” Also, my mom insisted I only liked “Bad, Bad LeRoy Brown” because it had the word “damn.” (I was 12 when it came out.) I swear I thought it was “baddest man in the whole downtown.”
Thankfully there will be parents that pass on the music to their children and down the number line. Gotta keep story telling alive in music, cause god knows it rarely exists today
@@atamagashock as a fan of music of just about any genre from any era (yes, even the really old stuff, I have a degree in french horn performance), I think a lot of people forget that most of the music from any generation is crap and you have to find the good stuff. It's easier to find the good things looking back because it's what survives. If you haven't already, I highly recommend checking out Kendrick Lamar's "Damn." It's a great starting point, absolute masterclass in storytelling and lyricism with some very creative uses of sound and layering and rhythms. Very musically interesting and a great interwoven tale as well.
I've studied this video thoroughly: - Each part that everyone is playing and how they're using their instrument and their voices to compliment Josh (Toni compliments the guitar perfectly and with respect to the original) - How they choose to play their parts and what chords/notes they pick to play on every part (Toni and the interesting capo choice on the 5th, cause I think in the original Maury Muehleisen plays it with the capo on the 7th fret, but he doesn't do that small D sound that Toni does, Josh plays a chord sequence on the C Bm Am D7 part etc.) - What everyone is doing vocally on their part (Reina and Toni's vocals are magical and Carson's bass vocals don't get enough credit) - Every little mistake that happens and the reaction of that person (won't point out those for obvious reasons :) ) - The reaction of everyone when the song ends (you've probably rehearsed that many times already), Josh's poker face until the video ends, Toni looking for other people's reactions, Reina celebrating and Carson being a cool motherf**** saying 'I'm cool with that' You guys are geniuses and you inspire me to seek my own group and learn how to do backing vocals and improve my guitar playing, although I will need 10 years to get to your level! Thanks y'all!
According to a interview quoted shortly before their accident - Maury said “ Jim is open in G. I’m capoed on the fifth fret in D.”Not sure , but I think this interview was being given in Guitar Player magazine.

Maury Muehleisen made Jim Croces music playable only to well versed guitar players. This is the one and only rendition Ive ever heard capture that essence. Great work all around !
I was so sad when Jim Croce died. He was a real favorite of mine at the time. It's impossible to watch any of these videos with Toni without falling in love with her smiles. Everyone in this ensemble is a legit star and only rising higher. They are all *so* good!
I met Toni Lindgren a few years ago in south Minneapolis when she and Reina Del Cid Played at a local event. She is a phenomenal guitar player. She plays guitar with an ease that makes you over look her gift. And...she just happens to be a nice person to boot!
Actually, like many performers, Josh & Carson consider themselves to be introverts I think. That probably contributes to their “humble” appearance. They make music because they LOVE to make music. Of course they like getting paid for it too, but they know they are very fortunate to be paid to do something they love & it shows.
What a wonderfully talented group of young musicians. They are so good. I’m pushing 75 and despair at the total crap that is called music today. I wish you Success in your music. Bravo!
I remember when this song came out and it's always been my favorite Jim Croce song. This cover was fantastic! Beautiful. The young lady playing Maury's fills is excellent. Lead vocal, awesome. Harmonies, spot on. Most importantly, it redeems my faith in humanity that these young wonderful musicians are playing Jim Croce songs. Croce had a short dance with fame, but his songs will always be here.
I hope that AJ has had a chance to hear this. He has had a rough few years with losing his wife. He lost his father at age 2, was blinded, possibly from child abuse. He retained some of his eyesight but has had a very challenging life of loss. :-(
This is one of those songs who's emotion is directly connected to the original artists. Wouldn't have imagined that anyone else could create that magic. Josh proves me wrong. The texture of his voice and timing create the same emotional response in me as did Big Jim. Thanks and congratulations.
I don't expect there's somebody played that song of this generation, I'm 62 now and we used to play that song when I was college in a tiny folkhouse in our city..great music video guys..
Comfort food has the connotation of being something that tastes good, but isn't good for you. What these guys do "tastes" good, and is certainly good for you.
I hadn't heard a very good cover of this song until I heard this one. This dude nailed so much nuance of the vocals in the song. It's one thing to simply play someone else's song, but to be able to understand and convey the emotion of the artist is tough to do.
That’s just unbelievably brilliant. Beautiful singing and playing. The smile on the face of the guitar player as she weaves her way through the chords. It’s almost as if she doesn’t believe the sounds she’s producing. What instrument is the girl on the left playing? This is real music from real talent.
The girl on the left, of course, is Reina del Cid-an amazing performer, songwriter, and “coverer” of other’s songs in her own right. Each of these four is incredible individually as well as together. Makes a 74 year old guy believe there’s hope.
Simply this is the best available cover in RUclips of this beautiful song. They are astonishing. Now I am editing this comment in 2024. And of course, this is the video of this wonderful song with most views in RUclips. Amazing

"She's living in LA with my best old ex friend Ray" ... one of the saddest lines ever written.
My favorite line of the song and of many songs...
@@jackielinde7568 However did you figure all that out? (sorry, couldnt resist)

Amazing story!
JusBidniss
Had NO clue that was what the song was about!!
Thank you so much for letting us in on that wonderful nugget of some of the best songs of my youth❤️
“Time In A Bottle” was sung at my wedding, and the young man did it so eloquently.
The memories that a song can bring back. 😊
I remember my first call home in basic at Ft McClellan, Alabama to my Dad...told him I changed my mind and he just laughed and hung up the phone...it was 1970. 🤪
Since he was in WWII when he was 19 and a pilot on the Charles F Hughes destroyer for the NAVY...i can see his point. Well...it was a lonely pity party till i finally figured out the rules and that basic training is all a mind game... after that, was jiggy with it. 👍🏻😁🇺🇸❤️🇺🇸
Still hated the gas chamber....we all know where the call OORAH came from.
Steven McGrath
Isnt it wonderful to hear real music and talent and such dedicated musicians!
And congrats on all the years of love yall have! ❤️👍🏻🤘🏻❤️
@@stevenmcgrath1603 Not only the dime, young people won't know what 'dialing someone' refers to!
(Not in the song, just a now-archaic phone term.) :)
BRAVO......
Nobody thinks that though, except corporate labels churing out the next pop star.
tears in my eyes and on my cheeks......
What's an operator?
C telephone operator
yes..a new generation true to their roots..
Sounded great ~ loved your harmonies! Jim and my brother Maury would be happy to know that you are enjoying their songs.
Your bro?! Cool... I love his music. Checked out his solo stuff after getting into Jim Croce a while back. Great stuff.
A great song and a truly great team. Still brings tears to my eyes. Peace.
I feel like you perfectly captured the growing pain in Jim's voice each time he says, "I've learned to...take it well"
So glad to see young beautiful people carrying on the glory days of modern music.
Four people, one Microphone and a ridiculous amount of talent is all you need to record a masterpiece...
Amen to that! Four people and one microphone are easy to find but Ridiculous amount of talent is a rare thing!
One mic isn't obviously enough, you don't really hear the details from the lead guitar which are actually beautiful
The young lady is an excellent guitarist.
Toni is quite the guitarist. Lot of talent there.
Amen to that, you can see she loves playing music as well
She could do me a favor and at least make it look more difficult.
That's a dude.
She's awesome man she reminds me of Duane Allman r i p
Am right behind you in years, Abi, and couldn't have said it better. Very impressive cover. Jim has to be smiling down on this one.
I might as well jump in here (Look at the pic on the left) I'm 81 and still playing My lovely wife carries the small amp on gigs when we have to climb stairs,, "SO, Greeting from Auckland New Zealand, at the moment it's the middle of our winter
The young woman playing the guitar on this is perfect. Perfect touch, perfect timing. Kudos.
The genius that is Toni Lindgren!!!!!!!

Nailed it, their own style, interpretation and a beautiful result. All the JC fans will be flocking to this version.
Totally agree. I used to really enjoy listening to Jim Croce albums. His music fits these modern day troubadours very well.

The woman in back , pickling the guitar is simply...amazing. TY
Toni. And yes, she is amazing.
Toni Lindgren is a very special musician - look up Elle & Toni
I just love watching Toni's face as she plays the guitar, she smiles and lights up everything around her when she is clearly in her own world making music
Yes... Tony you deserve it...you create life around you...Being a musician, I can "smell" the look of you...!!!
Yeah, she did some great head bopping. She was really into it. On a continuum of time with a song that will live forever.
Pretty much sums up exactly what I was going to say. She's a great guitarist and being in that bubble like she is when playing is one of the signs.
Yeah she's incredibly talented, her guitar chops are on point, flawless! 💕
Kudos to Toni for nailing Maury's leads, the guy is an unknown legend outside of the acoustic community and of course, Martin fans.

I am sitting here listening to this and I find myself crying. I was 13 when Jim died you folks do him justice Keep singing

I was 13 also - listened to Jim on Arm Forces Radio Europe
Me too, but I was older than 13...
You're not alone.
Same. I was 12. 😢😔
Jim Croce really meant a lot to me. When his songs came out, they spoke to many of us. You guys did a wonderful rendition. Thank you for being true to his music.
"My best old ex-friend Ray" What a great line. Freakin' genius the man was.
Excellent version.
AZCobraman had a Mandela moment where I swore it was “good ol best friend Ray.” Maybe there’s a recording somewhere where he says that lol
I used to sing, "He got a .32 gun in his pocketbook son..." instead of "in his pocket for fun". ;o)
AZCobraman, I always thought it was “in his pocketful of fun.” Also, my mom insisted I only liked “Bad, Bad LeRoy Brown” because it had the word “damn.” (I was 12 when it came out.) I swear I thought it was “baddest man in the whole downtown.”
That's OK, I bought a 45 of 'Devil Went Down to Georgia' pretty much because it said, "Son of a bitch" on it.
I can't believe he was only 30 when he died. It feels like all the best musicians die young to either drugs or plane crashes.
wow! young people singing a Jim Croce song ... life is still beautiful! humanity lives on! awesome, guys! thanks for sharing!
Beautiful, especially from such a young group.
I love jim croce definitely going to play him for my children when i get there
Sent chills down my spine! Awesome!
I've studied this video thoroughly:
- Each part that everyone is playing and how they're using their instrument and their voices to compliment Josh (Toni compliments the guitar perfectly and with respect to the original)
- How they choose to play their parts and what chords/notes they pick to play on every part (Toni and the interesting capo choice on the 5th, cause I think in the original Maury Muehleisen plays it with the capo on the 7th fret, but he doesn't do that small D sound that Toni does, Josh plays a chord sequence on the C Bm Am D7 part etc.)
- What everyone is doing vocally on their part (Reina and Toni's vocals are magical and Carson's bass vocals don't get enough credit)
- Every little mistake that happens and the reaction of that person (won't point out those for obvious reasons :) )
- The reaction of everyone when the song ends (you've probably rehearsed that many times already), Josh's poker face until the video ends, Toni looking for other people's reactions, Reina celebrating and Carson being a cool motherf**** saying 'I'm cool with that'
You guys are geniuses and you inspire me to seek my own group and learn how to do backing vocals and improve my guitar playing, although I will need 10 years to get to your level! Thanks y'all!
According to a interview quoted shortly before their accident - Maury said “ Jim is open in G. I’m capoed on the fifth fret in D.”Not sure , but I think this interview was being given in Guitar Player magazine.
Toni's capo is on the 7th lol

I don't think you realize just how good you all sound....
sgtpep5 and that’s a part of their charm. All are humble & thankful & joyous in making their special music. Wow!
Actually, like many performers, Josh & Carson consider themselves to be introverts I think. That probably contributes to their “humble” appearance. They make music because they LOVE to make music. Of course they like getting paid for it too, but they know they are very fortunate to be paid to do something they love & it shows.
Oh I dunno, all these folks been playing concerts in many countries. They might have a clue they’re gooder n’ heck. Make Groot grow another limb! ❤️
How do you know what they do or don't realize?

I was a Jim Croce fan before he died in that tragic plane crash. You have all done justice to a great song, air conditioner not withstanding.
Jim Croce would smile.

You guys are the musical version of ‘comfort food’.
Comfort food has the connotation of being something that tastes good, but isn't good for you. What these guys do "tastes" good, and is certainly good for you.
Lothar Zogg good point! What they do is certainly not “empty calories”. I’m grateful to see young artists doing something with ‘substance’.
Perfect description.
Good Comment man, that was a good comment, man.
Today it's more like junk food...
