I think I'm addicted to this performance. If anyone ever feels disillusioned with their guitar playing, they should be prescribed this video. It'll probably make them a bit more depressed about their own abilities (or maybe that's just me!) but it will always, always reconnect them with the pure joy of being able to play something halfway competently. My version doesn't sound half as good (or even a quarter) but every time I sing it, this performance accompanies me in the back of my head. And we sound glorious together! Cheers boys, you make me jealous of your youth and talent, but enthused, grateful and overjoyed at the same time!
These two young men make the best combination of voices and music. Niether one tries to outshine the other but, instead, they lend to each others unique sound. Why they don't have more reconition than they do is beyong my comprehension. Clearly they have earned, and should be, on their own tour. While Carson McKee can stand on his own talents without fail, as well as Josh Turner can, it is when they are together that the very best of both talents really shine and ring out clear enough to be heard as pure gold.
I've been watching Josh for 10 years and Carson was with him way back as young teens making music....I imagine they go back much farther than that as life long friends. Amazing talents both of them.
what do you mean they don't have more recognition? Their videos are always viral and there are a crap ton of likes and views on this video @Mari. I think it's our self desire for external acknowledgement that gets us in trouble. These guys could just be playing for good present moment fun and having the blessings of their talents to entertain others like us. Is that not enough? All in all, I get you, they're fun as heck to watch, even compared to the ones that "seems to have more acknowledgement." I know we've all been conditioned to compare and judge but trust that it's not necessary to be better than anyone or fully acknowledge to realize that your self worth is... awesome. It has to start with you. =) I say this because I noticed you got 273 likes for this which tells me that a lot of people also are dying for acknowledgements and are spreading out that same energy that we need acknowledgement to feel "enough" about ourselves. What kinds of jerks gives these guys a thumbs down? I’ve been playing guitar for 48 years and this makes me smile! It’s great to see young, talented people playing and having a great time doing it. I guess some people are just jealous of guys with raw talent having a great time making music. Keep up the good work guys and more importantly, keep having fun!
Agreed. I can’t play it that well with over 50 years of practice and this version is even better than what was released by Johnny and the Tennessee Two (as far as the guitar playing goes) and is a whole lot more fun! And that’s what it is all about in my opinion.
Rhythm guitar drops back at 1:09 - this is my first tell of 'real' musicians - if they know when to shut up a little and let someone else have the spotlight. Live, one mic - this is old school. Sounds great - keep it up, kids! :)
I just discovered this group and their individual channels a couple days ago, and aside from their awesome general talent with each instrument, this above all impresses me. They're so selfless in their performances.
I'm always surprised to see some really amazing players who have yet to learn this. Very frustrating! I agree that this is a great tell of "real" musicians!
Sincere thanks for pointing out things those of us who don't have the music gene (but are grateful to have the musical "Appreciation" gene!) will certainly miss. I also love that there are no in-ear devices, and that Josh, who has the quieter voice, can carry a decent tune in a great variety of ranges, and sing harmonies and "back up" which I always thought was a lot more difficult. But, imho, both of these young men are spectacular talents. Love them both (and all when the case warrants - Josh doesn't hang out with any musical slouches 😉).
I love it when these guys kinda lose it in the end. Goes to show that they are havin' a really good time doin' what they do. These boys are so frickin talented it's almost scary. I don't think I've run acrossed a Josh Turner vid that I didn't like. What amazise me is the depth and volume of music that these guys are capable of. Josh (and company) can do anything from classical and jazz to old 50's standards, folk and pop (the Frankie Vallie montage is a knockout!) from the 60's, his take on classic songs from the 70's, and then throw down their own original tunes (some written by Carson McKee) like "If I was A Fool" and "The Levee". These boys are just fantastic, in my humble opinion.
Every time I watch this it picks me right up. Aside from the outstanding musicianship, I love the way Carson sings out of the side of his mouth and has that little smile on his face when he sings the "I shot a man in Reno" line.
I Honesty have watched this video at least a hundred times, it's my favourite rendition of the song, was also my introduction to it. Only today did I notice Josh slips up his words at the start of the third verse around 1:33 . I love when small mistakes make it through!

My wife & I saw Josh & Carson do this tune as the set closer at The City Winery Loft last night (8/26/22) and they out and out CRUSHED IT. The crowd was cheering loudly for EVERY SONG from soup to nuts, but Folsom Prison in particular brought the house down. Crowd singing and a standing O before they came out and did Angelina for an encore.
