His dynamics are out of this world. His playing never felt rushed and that is insanely difficult on this song. Absolutely the best rendition of this piece I've ever heard.
I was thinking the same thing in regard to his dynamics. I started guitar about 45 years ago. I have loved so many guitar performances by so many guitarists,, but have rarely been truly astonished by any of them.. This performance Mr. Smith did in this video truly astonishes me.
'A mans gotta know his limitations'. I would'nt even attempt it. i started about 45 years ago too and if i had another 45 i still couldn't get to that level, specially that piece. Simply amazing, he makes it sound like it was written for guitar, it belongs there somehow👏
I had dinner with Tommy Emmanuel one night before he performed. He is one of the nicest, humblest, human being you will ever meet. I have played guitar on and off since my teens and I am now in my fifties. Tommy asked me if I wanted to play his guitar and I told him I wasn't that good and would be embarrassed, Tommy said: "nonsense mate you play for fun and because you like the guitar right? I said well yes Tommy but I can't play like you and he responded "I couldn't play like me either, it took me years to be able to play they way I play". Then he asked "how often I practice?" and I said an hour or so a day but not everyday. He responded: "I play 8-10 hours a day EVERY day. the only thing I know how to do is play guitar I cant do anything else, thank God people pay to come listen to me otherwise I would be broke" There it was, that was the answer that alluded me for years. I have friends that went on to play professionally and I could never really grasp why I wasn't as good as them. Its the time commitment, the love, and passion. What Tommy taught me in that moment was that while I love guitar it isn't the same passion he has, I have other interests that distract me from that type of commitment and that is OK. Tommy taught me to just appreciate the guitar for what it does for me in the time I have. So for those that feel intimidated like I did watching someone of Tommy or Richard's caliber play, remember they are more than likely spending way more time perfecting their craft its a full time passion for them. Most astonishing thing is not that Richard plays this MONSTEROUSLY complex arrangement to perfection, but that he does it so effortlessly. Most artists at that level have to block everything out to focus their attention on the performance. Richard is completely relaxed present and playfully connected with the energy in the room. He's truly next level.
Most artists at that level? I don’t know any musicians who have to actively think about their movements when playing a practiced song. It eventually becomes muscle memory, no matter how difficult.
@@fieldrat9046 Really? You don’t know any musicians who "block everything out to focus their attention on the performance"? Bumber, you should check out guitarists like Pat Matheny, David Gilmore, Stevey Ray Von, Carlos Santana, BB King, Django Rienhardt, George Benson, etc, etc. So many great focusers you're missing out on.
Bro look at some of BB Kings later performances where he’s a bit older and fatter sitting down, he literally rests Lucille on his belly it’s quite funny
I have been playing guitar on and off for 45 years, i am retired now, so I play and practice 6 hours per day, guitar now is my life, my lounge room looks like a guitar shop, gear every where, finger style is my favorite, played on a classical guitar. Now listening and watching Richard..... I am packing it in, I give up as i now realize what a rubbish guitar player I am, no amount of practice will take the place of born talent. Just kidding...no I am not. See its too late, I am too old now. Just remember, the greatest tragedy in life is to fail to embark on a quest to find what you do best, and do just THAT. I did just that... its building houses But my real love is not houses, its music, Guitar, poetry, Guitar and more guitar. Oh well, maybe next life.
I dont like your comment real or not i am gonna be honest. What does making music have to do with how good or bad you are. Making music is about MAKING MUSIC and expressing yourself. Why compare yourself to other people, me myself i have just so much fun playing house of the rising sun over and over on my guitar even tho its the only thing i CAN play :D.
I bet you’re better than 99% of other players. Seems like you have nothing to worry about. People always have a knack to compare themselves to supperiors. I bet Richard does as well! It takes twice as much time to get to the 0.1% of the top players than it took to get to the 1%. If you’re doing what you love, the only thing you need to do is relax and enjoy the ride. Good luck to you
Yeah - I am an old guy and a pretty damn good bass player, but when I hear the greats I sometimes want to give it up, but it still makes me happy to hear what I can do when I am not comparing myself to Stanley Clarke.
I'm relating to what you're saying and I'm guessing you're as good as a guy who plays with skills and passion. My first ever love is my guitar and I really love playing it. It hit me me when I read your comment, and it feels like I'm going down the same road but somehow I'm being thankful for finding what you have said because I'm very sure to myself I don't want to leave or do just THAT. Somehow it kinda gave me a thump on the head to wake up and start doing what I love again. So yeah, thank you for this... And hey man, it's never too late to start over again at any point in our lives. It's only too late when we give up on something knowing that we can still do it. I guess we just need a little push to get things moving again.
Perfect execution. What impresses me the most is the fact that the dynamics are so on point. I guess more people can hit the right notes but every little tone here is spot on regarding the volume
This is one of the very few times I've watched the video, and prayed to God there was a way that the man in the video could hear me shouting and screaming and exclaiming and sheer Joy while I watch him play. Holy s*** dude this guy is amazing. Why does the whole world not know this man's name? This might just be the greatest tragedy in human history that this man is not world-renowned.
He is the level of player that you only really start to appreciate how good he is, the better you become. To someone who doesn't play, or has a very basic level of skill, he is a great player, to really good players, this man is a genius :)
Agreed. I consider myself to be very good with chord transitions, but this man was really making my head spin. Now, i have to add this to the list of songs i want to master!
The first time I saw this I almost cried. His playing is so close to perfect. The dynamics, the Tempo, just his insane precision with the chords and all. Its insane. Around the time I watched this is was really getting into playing guitar. I would play for hours. I'd fall asleep on my couch with my guitar, wake up, drank coffee and continued to play. I wish I will play only an eight as good as this one day. Honestly I'm afraid I will never quit make my guitar bounce like this. It feels like he's a cyborg.
When you have Tommy Emmanuel bobbing his head to your playing and finally laughing out in awe (3:05), you can safely say you're rather good at the guitar.
I wish Tommy was out of the frame. He was distracting, almost to the point of trying to get attention focused on himself. Richard Smith does a stellar job with this playing.
In my 14 years as a self taught guitarist I've learned a few immutable truths. The easiest pieces to play sound the easiest and are the least impressive. The intermediate pieces often sound the most impressive, and were often written for the guitar and are based around it's strengths. The MOST challenging pieces and styles (like you've seen here) often sound like something that people walk by at a train station and go, "That's nice, they're pretty good," but a guitarist will walk by and think, "Oh my god, they must have been practicing that for 30 years to get it to that level of execution."
Very nicely put brother . A style seen in Paul simons work where you’re maintaining that bass note through the changes and runs. Kathy’s song for instance, that took me a while 😂
Wait do normal people really think this song is intermediate? Been trying to learn it on piano, but it's end game level stuff (such an insanely complex arrangement), nowhere near intermediate
@@wolf-en8xd I think to a lot of people who are unfamiliar with guitar/playing an instrument in general, tapping out solos like Eddie Van Halen is what's considered "god level" compared to to something like this, but real one's know a guitar god is the guy giving himself arthritis in his left hand day by day playing pieces written for piano
MY 16-year-old son's music teacher just gave him this song to learn. I just sent this video link to my son's messenger to see what kind of competition he's up against. Actually, I just want him to learn his own version like Richard Smith did. Thank you for the ear-to-ear smile as you played. I have no doubt my son is going to do the same to me when he gets it down.
The story is told that after seeing modern jazz genius Charlie Parker play saxophone live, many of his contemporaries threw their axes (horns) into the river in frustration. After hearing Richard Smith here, I think I know how those guys felt.
Don't get carried away...he flubbed a few, but I am sure there is a temple someplace where acolytes worship at his feet. I am presently kneeling on the carpet in front of the screen and lowering my head in respect.
The fact that he can keep himself in time the entire time and has the whole damn thing memorized and didn’t miss a single note... man this was awesome. Bravo!!!
I know right I could play some parts of this. But there is no way i could remember the whole part and keep it this smooth. He us very very talented and dedicated.
Well you'd be surprised about most people's capability to memorize something like a song like this, just takes repetition and time, and you actually get better at memorization the more you do it. What's really impressive is like you said not missing a single note, but also keeping the touch he clearly has all the way through
@@marialenaho5249 The person that you replied to means that the guy playing in the video played every chord (a joke) in just that one song; not that He/She made a song themself.
I can't help but notice this guy's massive forearm moving like piano strings. That strumming arm alone tells you how much time and effort he's put into practicing.
@@woswasdenni1914I mean it's true. Chet Atkins version is totally incomplete, lacking the vast majority of the parts, and in the parts it does have, doesn't even attempt to get the "stride" (baseline) in there correctly. Simply put, nobody plays it like this on guitar and that's NOT HYPERBOLE.
Damn. 100 people could play those exact same notes on the same guitar and it wouldn't sound so good. Amazing dynamic control, absolutely makes the performance!
I’m not sure if he’s being accompanied by one of the other guitarists but if not that’s the most amazingly beautiful full sound I’ve heard come from one guitar at once
I just smiled for 4 minutes 46 seconds solid. Thanks too for all the wonderful comments. I just smiled for anther hour reading them! How can 1.5k people give this the thumbs down? Bass players?
One of the many things I like about Richard Smith's playing, is that he always puts the song in centrum, and never goes into meaningless technical show off. Each and every touch on the strings adds to the quality of the song. It is a pure zen-experience to hear and watch him play.
@Mr Messy very true. The unfortunate side of having everything accessible in this day and age at the touch of a button, is that people become very self obsessed with how they are being perceived and try too hard to impress. I myself am responsible at times. (as are we all if we admit to it) As we discover more we sometimes learn less I suppose.
Thats sounds right but it really depends more on your intentions than the actions themselves......when TE plays flashy things/show's off it tends to ONLY ADD to the overall entertainment value. In such cases It's humor & not ego. Its Just a given that people didn't come & pay to watch an unimpressive musician. It is true however that the average human is FULL of Ego, beliefs & expectations etc.(all aspects of fear imo).
Definitely. The finger coordination, staying in time with such difficult cord changes, and something I think people overlook, just performing in general. I have definitely noticed that I'm a lot worse a player when I'm playing for other people. This guy doesn't even seem to care. Truly phenomenal
@@mr.capythebara9384 100%. I remember playing randy Rhoades Dee to myself over and over, thinking I had it down pretty well. I remember 'boasting' about this to friends one night and when challenged I played it, but it was pityfull to how I (thought) I normally played it.
This performance would make Scott Joplin say "I wrote my music for the wrong instrument" This was absolutely fantastic and I think this song is even better on the guitar than on the piano.
Anyone ever seen the sheet music to this ? It is deceptively complex, sounding like a "simple" melody to non-musicians, it will put you through your efforts. This guy has learned it into memory ! Marvel the gift, this is what practice and skill will give you .
You're right. It's the first complex song I learned on piano the bass line is part of the melody it doesn't sound right without it and that's difficult to emulate on 1 guitar.
for those who wonder what the guitarist's name is, his name is Richard Smith, he is a guitarist with an impressive technique, and an incredible career.

Everyone concentrate in their unique ways.
Most artists at that level? I don’t know any musicians who have to actively think about their movements when playing a practiced song. It eventually becomes muscle memory, no matter how difficult.
@@fieldrat9046 Really? You don’t know any musicians who "block everything out to focus their attention on the performance"?
I could practise 26 hrs a day and I'd still be useless.
2:20 when he hits the 7th fret harmonics and gives Tommy the ‘check this spicy boi out’ look...gets me every time.
Perfect execution. What impresses me the most is the fact that the dynamics are so on point. I guess more people can hit the right notes but every little tone here is spot on regarding the volume
I just realized 4 minutes ago that I've never heard this played on guitar before. After watching, now I see why. Bravo!
I love when one piece of music is fairly elementary on one instrument but transposing it to another renders it God tier.

Very well said man...100%
Very nicely put brother

@Mr Messy very true. The unfortunate side of having everything accessible in this day and age at the touch of a button, is that people become very self obsessed with how they are being perceived and try too hard to impress. I myself am responsible at times. (as are we all if we admit to it)
