- Sp00ky season is probably my favorite season, so I'd be remiss to let it pass by without sharing an appropriately spooky song. Stan Jones wrote it, Burl Ives covered it, Bing Crosby, Vaughn Monroe...but Johnny's version is arguably the best-known today. Huge thanks to Josh for not only appearing in this video, but for suggesting the full-band approach, talking me down from my anxieties re: recording drums AFTER the guitar and vox take, and providing clutch mixing help when all the low-mid-frequency-heavy instruments started getting the best of me. This video truly wouldn't exist without him.
Special thanks as well to my Patreon patrons who allow me the opportunity to celebrate Halloween as part of my job, and to AVID for the sonic MVP of some of my latest recordings, the Carbon.

Yippie Kay-O, my man. Thanks for having me.
😂 😂 😂 😂 😂
You guys should start a band or something!
Seems like Carson’s voice and your Tele were made for this 🥰 fantastic harmonies too. Finally, super glad you’ve got Carson puttin “full band” stuff on his channel now 👍
Is this a Die Hard reference?
Josh your harmony here a amazing!!!!
This song is 70+ years old and has been recorded by dozens of performers. Some made the charts. This recording has to rank near the top.
This is one of the finest versions of Ghost Riders I have ever heard. I'm going to have to listen to a lot of Carson McKee's work.
Exactly. It’s a great version
My dad loves this song. As a kid, I didn't realize the lyrics were well crafted and spooky.
Goosbumbs when the voices blend. You made that song into something new.
Josh’s expression playing guitar looks he’s mad cuz because he thought it was NEXT Saturday morning when they were gonna record “Ghost Riders In The Sky”, so he stayed out late last night partying and planned on sleeping in and watching football games all day.
Then Carson came in and woke him up: “Hey buddy! Shakey, shakey! Time to wakey!”
Josh was like, “Dammit Carson! Leave me alone!”, and pulled the sheets back over his head.
Carson was like, “C’mon buddy! It’s time to record Ghost Riders In The Sky!”
Josh was like, “Dammit Carson! That’s NEXT Saturday!”
Carson said, “Sorry buddy, it’s THIS Saturday. It’s today!”
So Josh got out of bed and went in the bathroom to wash his face, brush his teeth and comb his hair, and couldn’t find his comb.
“Dammit Carson!”, Josh said,
Carson knew what Josh was yelling about, and said, “Ohhhh...sorry buddy, I borrowed your comb this morning.”
And Josh was like, “Dammit Carson! Stop taking my combs!”
So then Josh went to the kitchen and was gonna grab a quick bite to eat. He looked in the pantry and saw an empty PopTart wrapper. He was furious! Josh turned around and saw Carson standing there with a shit eating grin.
Josh was like, “DAMMIT CARSON! Stop eating my PopTarts!”
He grabbed the PopTart box...it was empty. “Dammit Carson! That was my last PopTart!”
Carson was like, “Ohhhh...sorry buddy....”
So Josh was like, “Dammit Carson! I’m hung over. I’m sleepy. I’m hungry. I’m out of PopTarts. I need a new comb. And my breath stinks. Can we just play the damn song already?”
Carson was like, “Sure buddy...”
Josh was like, “And I’m not gonna be happy at you today, CARSON! I’m not even gonna smile!”
Then Reina came in and said, “Dammit Josh! Thanks for eating the last PopTart!”
At which time Carson said, “Ghost Riders In The Sky...take one...”
“Dammit Carson!”
The bolo is a nice touch for this one!
Even better is that it tops a flannel shirt.
Wonderful, and Carson’s voice is perfect. Thanks.
A lot of wonderful performers have covered this song, and these young men are second to no one!
Excellent version, thanks. I think it was written for Gene Autry in the movie Ghost Riders (1949). When I first heard his version it blew me away. I had never known he had sang it and was caught off guard. I never knew Gene could sing with so much soul, very haunting. Of course I love Johnny's version and also the rockier version by the Outlaws. It's just a great song.
Carson is a world treasure
Carson, what a voice!! Josh, what a guitarist!!
With all due respects to Those Who Came Before, this is, imho, the best version of this song I’ve ever heard. Thank you.
Totally agree.
Really, better than the original , give it a rest
Charting versions were recorded by The Outlaws, Vaughn Monroe ("Riders in the Sky" with orchestra and vocal quartet), which topped the Billboard magazine charts, by Bing Crosby (with the Ken Darby Singers), Frankie Laine, Burl Ives (two different versions), Marty Robbins, The Ramrods and Johnny Cash.
Your choice?
I’ve not heard all the versions, but this is my favorite that I’ve heard. Sorry Johnny.
@@jamesbarros950 Same here, this is my favorite
Almost didn’t push this because I didn’t want this grand ol’ song to get ruined (I love it so and it hold a special place in my heart with my dad and I) - so I thought- I’ll give it a second, and with my eyes closed I heard a surprise-a wonderful damn surprise- it wasn’t a ruin to this song - it was a tribute to this song! I took a deep breath- relaxed and listened to the rest in a relaxed and comfortable state- thank you making this song a wonderful cover- great voices- great instrumentals - wonderful all round! ❤❤❤❤❤
EXCELLENT! One of the best versions I've heard.
Love that STANKY BASS FACE 1:37
You guys are fantastic. Carson's voice is one of the smoothest, versatile and wonderful voice i've ever heard. Thanks
Awesome, I prefer this to the original. Carson's voice is perfect for this. The slower tempo makes it easier to understand and more mysterious.
Besides your awesome musical talents, you two always have such great production values. But this really stands out, with Carson’s vocals sounding so incredible. Hard to believe you can get such fantastic sound without being in a dedicated recording space, like a studio. Also noteworthy in this one are Josh’s look of intensity… and his wicked hairstyle! 😁
pretty sure that is a warm audio 47 up there. consider it $1k between the eyes.
@@ruthlesscutthroat And it is a treated room even if it looks like a none dedicated space. Doesnt detract from anything though, these guys really are good.
And there's also the Kelly Factor in play ;)
There's only two kinds of music, my grandma used to say - country and western. Great cover!
Love the sound of that electric guitar.
3:17 this sounds amazing
Great cover. This is a great tribute to the original.
I looked it up, original was in 1940s looks like.
Funny. I never said it was Johnny Cash. I said it wasa great tribute to the original. No mention of Johnny Cash.
That vocal .... Seriously like
My favorite Johnny Cash song of all time
I’m old so was skeptical of you tackling this one, but damned if you didn’t nail it. Wonderful.
As a life-long Man In Black fan, that was a Pure T JOY to listen to!!!
Amen
Reminds you just how great Johnny Cash really was though.. Carson sounds bland in comparison
This song has to be done straight. Deep voice, clear articulation, no over-production, no syncopation, no frills. Because the song itself does all the heavy lifting. This take is 98% there, which is far better than most. Fine instrumental. Excellent!
OMG this so suits your voice Carson!
Your voices together are always wonderful! Beautiful cover :)
I always thought what a perfect representation of hell this was. You're a cowboy, bringing in a herd to round-up can be a rough part of a rough job anyway, and you're given the devil's herd of demon cows to catch, and they will not be caught, and you can never ever stop trying until you do catch them, but you never can! 'Cowboy, change your ways today, or with us you will ride' indeed!
And you guys really did justice to an old favorite, which I guess is why I talked here more about the story than the performance -- your excellent performance told the story, made it believable, celebrated it and not yourselves. Which is all anyone can hope for from a good performance.
In short, nailed it!
Very, very good alright, the Bloke on the left remind me of a very young Micheal Caine, John Lennon and Buddy Holly, I have to say, (not just because all 3 wore glasses either) , lol, big fan of these guys so far already , only just discover them today,
That electric guitar tone is spot on👌
Great song, (I like the bolo tie for the western theme).
One of my favorite songs expertly done by 2 of my favorite singer/ musician duos.
Love this version and production is both retro ad clean....As for Carson...Buddy Holly or Hank Marvin or a blend of both.. :)
Yeah, isn't he!
This reminded me of the blues brothers and got me thinking. Please cover something they did. Like sweat home Chicago or something. Some blues baby.
Una majestuosa interpretación y es la versión que más me gusta.
Utterly brilliant cover there Carson (and Josh) - quite amazing, and every bit as good as any other version I've heard in the 69 years I've been on the planet - and for 54 of these, I've been a musician, but NOT anywhere near as good as you two
Same here, youngster...
Lovely moist reverb on Carson’s guitar, great harmonies as ever. Big fan
Mmmoist!?
I'm in my fifties and love all of these types of spaghetti western tunes.
I really appreciate that a few of the younger generation also appreciate classics like this.
There is hope for this woke world yet.
Thanks fellas !
Great addition to Carson's Country Corner.
YESSS some Johnny Cash!!!! Get it Carson!
So CLEAR and CLEAN
Superb cover - I can't imagine it being done better.
Awesome, just awesome. Done just right.
And looks like the Buddy Holly band reincarnated!
When you two get with Toni Lindgren again do this but end up with Josh and her doing the Outlaws ending where they just start speeding it up faster and faster. You two did a wonderful job of it but the two of them ending it in a blistering fret burning guitar duel would be epic.
Yippee kaehhhiii rock it! Wonderful!
Carson’s voice is perfect for this song. Josh is master of the guitar.
Always thought this song was a metaphor. Until that night. Dear God, until that night!
Although I am not into country music….Wow. I do enjoy this cover.
Pure silky voice and perfect harmony! Thank you for posting.
how good is this? How about that perfect harmony, to say nothing about the perfect playing of the numerous instruments - damn some people are talented!
Flipping heck, this is so awesome.
Can’t get enough of your videos.
Single malt vocals, Mr. McKee. Hints of caramel and sneaky peat, not to mention the gleam of big iron.
Lovely to hear the full range of Carson's amazing voice. Great mix and wonderful performance. Thanks for leaving the outtakes in... always love those as part of these informal productions. You guys really are the best.
Fantastic….great line forgot to record the whistling….wonderful bit of fun.
Carson's pickin' and vocals are amazing, as usual. If it has strings Josh can play it to perfection. Thank you, gents! Glad to see that Josh's hair has yet to meet a comb. 😂
Burl Ives made the definitive recording. Burl had a mournful cry.
The only way you could be more country than that would be to wear cowboy hats ! Great performance !
I love their shirts......
This again is fantastic. Good sound good timing but above all awfully good voices. This is music. But boys....why don't we hear from you here in Europe? ❤
Your singing really has progressed a ton, amazing performance by you guys
This was a great scene in The Blues Brothers fun song
Carson’s singing is popping out! You guy’s folky style is really down to the earth while using all the simple contemporary equipments is great,
Talent is alive and kicking
Love the spooky October tune! Thanks for posting as always you guys do the best covers.
You may not realize this but you are doing good work that will be appreciated for years in resurrecting these classics and keeping them alive. Keep it up
You guys are so awesome and inspiring.yall make me want to break out my old martin and invite some freinds over for a jam. Thanks for doing all you do.
Do it! Do it! There is nothing like a jam session.
Ha! Great job pardners! Thank you. Be well.
Carson, this is one of the best renditions of this song I have ever heard!
Yup, that's a whole lot of bottom end. Sounds great!
Killer vocals Carson. Great tune.
Awesome.
Very nicely done, you guys have amazing talent. Shame an angry beaver attacked Josh’s head on the way over to the studio.
My favorite version of this.! Wow.!
Wow! That was awesome, boys!!! There are covers...., and then there are COVERS!
Everyone that has previously recorded this song in whatever version, starting with Burl and Stan, is now jealous. You have set the bar. Full Stop.
burl ives sings my favorite version.......he brings the ghostly feeling to the singing......
Well, I was a bit worried because this is one of my all time favorites. I should have known this song would be in good hands by you guys. Great!
Absolutely fantastic! A great example of 'less = more' in music!
I totally agree!
Carson voice is perfect for this. The best cover, as always.
An Amazing mood! We're dreaming! Hi from Italy!
Sets the new standard. Carson's voice and faces and Joshes picking and harmonies made me hear this as a whole new song. Thank you guys!
Cheers, Renee
Good old Johnny would be proud chaps, great cover 🥃👍
How have I missed this excellent version?! Congratulations; brilliant 👏👏
Yipppeeeeeeeiiiiooo, Yippppiiiiaaaay!
Carson, you’re voice is so great; the low end of it is captivating. Always look forward to see what you’ll do next.
How are these guys not super famous?
Outstanding as ever gents. Carson always sounds so good on Johnny Cash songs.
I so enjoy it when you two sing these older tunes, you put your own spin on it and you own it. Thank you.
GREAT JOB CARSON,LOVE IT!! MY FATHER HAS HIS OWN RADIO AND TV SHOW IN TENNESSEE AND HE HAS DONE THIS SONG MANY TIMES ON REGIONAL AIR HIM SINGING LEAD AND HIS AMAZING BACKUP HARMONY VOCAL TEAM,THEY SAY MY FATHER'S VERSION IS ONE OF THE BEST IN THE SOUTHEAST AND THIS ONE Y'ALL JUST DID IS JUST AS GREAT AND MAYBE EVEN BETTER!! AWESOME, AWESOME, AWESOME!!!!!!
"Good lord, what now? I reckon I'm a-ridin', an' purdy durn fast, too!" Pete became aware of something like thunder, only it was all around him. A kind of fog lifted from his sight, and he realized he wasn't just riding, he was herding! Or, at least trying to, as the herd was way out there in front, keeping well out of reach of him, and.... his fellow riders? Somehow, Pete managed to stay in the saddle through all these revelations. Although, as fast as his mount was galloping, more of his weight was on his feet in the stirrups, his knees gripping a stallion as big as a draft horse, and the passing landscape seeming like something out of a dream. But, it wasn't so much a landscape as a... what? There was land sure enough, and plenty of it, but the perspective was all wrong. Then his eyes sort of reset, and he realized he wasn't so much as passing _through_ the landscape, as _above_ it! This amazing, headlong, barely-under-control careening was up among the clouds!
Looking over to his left, Pete could make out a familiar face. Was that Bill on one of these unbelievable horses? Riding skills, long burned into his muscle memory, took over and through a combination of nudging with his knees and working the split-reins of as rich and polished a tack as he had ever gripped (coal black, it was, with red painted accents worked into it), Pete guided the impossible horse over to his left. "Bill! Hey Bill, is 'at you?! Bill!"
A terrified face, pale, dirty, sweating, turned toward Pete. "Pete! Wh-whut are we a-doin' here?"
"I don't know." Then, after a pause, Pete bawled out incredulously, "I thought yew wuz dead!"
Bill appeared to think this over, then said, "I know'd yew was dead! I put at least 3 right in the middle of yore chest! In that saloon, on the edge of San Antone!"
"Right after I tossed my big ol' Bowie knife in-ta the middle of your'n! The last thing I remember before I blacked out was you yellin' you was a-takin' me with ya!" recalled Pete. But he saw he'd lost his companion's attention, whose gaze was now locked onto the head of Pete's horse.
"Pete, that there horse just snorted fire!" A fact that Pete could readily believe, as he had just seen the same behavior out of Bill's horse.
"I don't think we're in San Antone anymore, Bill! An' what's up with that herd out in front? I ain't never see'd no cattle sech as that! An' I don't know how I know, but I think we's a-spos'ed ta catch 'em!"
"How long we been at this?" wondered Bill aloud. But both riders seemed to know the answer -- years, decades maybe, as remnants, distant memories of this same conversation at last started drifting into their shattered minds, over and over, cutting, shredding its way into their bleeding consciousness, a fresh hell each time the realizations and memories were visited upon them. Always and forevermore on the same unending, exhausting, disheartening cattle drive!
"All I know", answered Pete, "is I'm plumb wore out!" Then, "I reckon this is our punishment, since we done kilt each other! Why'd you have ta cheat at that last hand, anyways?"
"Cheat?! yelled Bill. "That there was the luckiest hand I was ever dealt! You never could stand ta lose, ya dumb ol' cowboy! Well, you've lost this one, ain't ya? Lost this one forever, ya durn fool!"
Just then, the herd made a sweeping left turn, and headed up into a kind of canyon in the clouds. As Pete was working out in his head how they might cut them off, he noticed his path led past the top of a tall butte up ahead on the right, where a cowboy, a _live_ one by the looks of him, sat disbelieving, mouth hanging open, on a pretty bay mare. A reg'lar one, too, not so much as a spark coming from her nostrils. "Cowboy!" Pete called out.
Bill couldn't hear what followed, as Pete's voice was drowned out by another peal of thunder off to their left. Or was it the hoofbeats of the other poor souls riding along with them, innumerable, wailing, damned. "What'd you say ta that feller, Pete?" Bill shouted.
"Told 'im ta change his ways or he'd end up a-ridin' with us! Mebbe it'll do him some good. An' mebbe tellin' 'im'll do me some good! Can't hurt, I reckon!" Then clucking his tongue and flicking his reins back at his mount's flanks, and with a good kick in its sides t'boot, Pete yelled out to the horse, "Alright you hellion, let's see if this is all you got! Hyaaaahhh!"
WOW!!! Man, is this your own writing? If so, I commend you. You're a pro. :-)
@@belascialoja4812 You're too kind. :)
Yeah, something in their rendition kinda brought out something new for me, felt like jotting something down. But I didn't do it justice. You should have seen the version in my head! lol
@@billparrish4385 The versions in my head _always_ outshine those on the page. /// Btw, some good reads you may enjoy, if you haven't already: _Warlock_ - by Oakley Hall. "A Mother's Story" by James Agee.
This is one of them standards most all guitarist's try to learn and play when starting out! (At least, back in my day it was!) It's an "easy" song to play, but "hard" to play it well! (Of course, you guys knock it out of the park!)
Best version I've ever heard...
Now I have this song stuck in my head. Thanks a lot, Carson. 🙄
You brought back fond memories for me at 74 years old. My father loved this song and he'd be 105 now. My god I can only wonder what he would think. What a pair.
That was brilliant! You covered it all. The bass vocals, the storyline intensity, the waa waa strum..and the eerie whistle.. that was sooooo cool. It's all in the execution and you executed! Thanks for doing this song! Rock on! 🤟
Give these guys a big cigar!😯👍
You guys never cease to amaze and surprise even after all these years. We the fans live for these wonderful moments of the unexpected and how great they are. Love your work.
Amazing job! Josh, you look like Dana Carvey there in some of those shots! Reminds me of Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure! 🤔😅🙈✌️😎
Excellent cover. It's not an easy song to do and you guys did it brilliantly. Thanks!
Holy cow! I've never liked Johnny Cash, and I have to admit that even at the beginning of this track my eyes rolled "Oh great, a kitschy cowboy track. What a laugh." But dang, such a cool song and well done! This will never be my *favorite* set of emotions associated with music, but I begin to understand the appeal: the mystery, the adventure, the drama. And that warbling strummed chord is such a cool sound. I'm just happy to have seen this, because it really *added* something to my ability to appreciate a new (to me) kind of music. Thanks!
