I've been having so much fun with my new Martin SC-13E, that I've been ignoring my DX Johnny Cash model, so I figured I'd take a crack at arranging "Folsom Prison Blues" for the acoustic. I wanted to mimic that driving bass line the whole time, so that was the biggest challenge; but once I got my thumb hitting the root and five on the bass string, and getting a slap on the back beat... the rest started coming into focus. I also wanted to dial in a little bit of that rockabilly vibe, so I ran a direct signal from the Fishman MX pickup, and threw some subtle slap echo on it in the mix.

What we see is the finished product, what we DONT see...is the many, many, MANY hours spent learning the song, over..and over..and over...
When i did a show with my guitar when i was 12, someone said "Oh my! that is SO good!" My mom replied..."you should have heard the first 200 times he was learning it!"

I love the legend of Johnny Cash. The lore around his career. He was blackballed from the industry, but eventually with time it only made him an even more creative, passionate artist. Shout out Rick Rubin for believing in his greatness!
Johnny Cash embraced humanity, including the darkest corners of it. He was the embodiment of a person who didn't pretend to be a polished, virtuous role model that never made mistakes or poor decisions. He was there for the people that society was trained to abandon. That's why he's the Man in Black. That's why he had his iconic performances at Folsom and San Quentin. Cash is a sobering reminder that nobody is worthy on their own because the vices that bind humanity also bind us together. It's just a coincidence that he also makes really fuckin cool music and happens to be one of the coolest fuckin guys of all time.

Thank you for showing this picking style so clearly...I was able to get the basics of this type of playing just by watching you and mimicking your deliberate fingering seems, like a lot of half bar chord slides and individual picking within wrapped around a constant bass line....pure gold here folks...remember you can slow down the video speed as well and this is just super fun. Not too mention you'll impress a lot of people (even if they play or not) by playing tunes like this.
No one told me you can use all 10 fingers at once……..best version ever.

Said that my buddy got caught, it was the end of it all
He went to prison with scars on his face, he'd been going around the place, wasn't very slick, but been very sick with the blues in his case

Well I was drunk the day my ma got out of prison
and I went to pick her up in the rain
but before I got to the station in my pickup truck
she got runned over by a damned old train
and I think it was this one.

Beyond fantastic playing. Over many years I've mastered flat picking. It's when I hear things like this that I wish soo much that I had split my time over the years learning finger style with flat picking.
Really nice tonal quality to that Martin, in the hands of an expert. A glowing performance, yet again, Justin. I'm amazed that you are playing rythym guitar and lead simultaneously. I enjoy watching your hands. I want to know if you do the video in one take. Lol. You play like the guitar is an extension of your body. You keep playing and I'll keep listening.
