Doc Watson has always been one of my biggest influences & his arrangement of "Deep River Blues" was the first Travis-Picking style song I ever learned. I have been having so much fun playing this Martin DX Johnny Cash model dreadnought lately, that it's been inspiring me to dust off some of these old arrangements and share'em with you.

I was playing Deep River Blues before you were born. A friend played Travis style and it was the first song I'd heard in the style around 1965. It's what motivated me to learn how to play guitar and I think I've played a bit of it every time I've picked up a guitar for over 50 years. I also played it for Merle Travis in his dressing room one time and I have to say something frankly Justin, I hate your guts. Loved it. Nice to see how the last 30 years has produced so many players who are keeping the style alive. My hat's off to you. Merle did warn me about one thing though, he said, "You keep pickin' your guitar like that and the hole will never heal up."

I used to hear my dad play this song, and as I grew up, we used to play it together. We don't play much as we used to now, but Deep River Blues will always remain the Father&Son theme in my heart. Thanks for polishing this masterpiece of Doc Watson. Cheers from France

@Steven Thompson So true. In the good old days you could believe you were a pretty hot picker when comparing yourself to locals. Then youtube came along and suddenly your stuttering version of Freight Train didn't sound nearly so good.

The Johnny Cash Martin sounds great. I picked up the 50th Anv. Mexican plant same price as the Cash. And also plays ands sounds better than some of the more expensive models. The Cash is really nice. Great playing as always.

Justin is better than tommy. Tommy just plays every thing light speed and shows off. Justin plays all speeds and is very humble
@@Flyfishthebordersandbeyond lol, technically, tommy emmanuel is a fucking beast, he can play whatever he wants and he has a colosal memory. He lost some groove because his technic is perfect but he's still one or the best guitarist of all time

Ima diehard heavy metal head and I just can't get enough of this its absolutely phenomenal
My grandpa was my introduction to this song. We both had a mutual liking for the song. I met another man, Stan not long after and found that he liked the song as well. We got to play our versions to each other, and it was apparent that he was better at it than I was, haha! Because if them, the song is a regular part of my song circle. Your version is absolutely wonderful, and you played it very well.

I love the tommy emmanuel version but yours and doc watson’s one is great
Doc is a legend, for some reason Tommy had always left me a bit cold. Not sure why that is, and I have nothing but admiration for his technique but he doesn't give me the feels like Doc, Tony Rice, or Justin Johnson.

BEE YOU TEE FULL young fella you never fail me ! I would still like to hear you and Johnny Hiland jam this kind of stuff ! In fact I just broke out Turquoise Trail again. Had to put it away for awhile, I didn't want to burn holes in it. Hadn't played it in about 4 months and it's just as fresh as the first time I played both cd's. By the way the Cash Martin sounds phenomenal, I could listen to you play that thing ALL DAY LONG. ( wife's tablet )
