  • Originally by Stealers Wheel. We got to play our first show with these two this past Friday, and we had a little extra time the day of, so we decided to put this tune together. This was a pretty last minute thing (Cheers to Toni for getting the slide part down day of!) but we had fun, anyway.

No one going to comment on how the guitarist played the slide so smoothly that every note she slid was pretty much pitch perfect? She was amazing. No easy feat to do especially as the song goes on and you lose yourself in its catchiness, I've been watching a few covers where the guitarist playing slide, understandably starts being shaky in pitch as they lose themselves in the song, but not this girl. Cool as ice. I'd like to learn to play slide guitar as smooth as her.

    • @QUIX4U
      @QUIX4U Год назад

So good to see them smiling afterwards, and so sad to now realise they cocked it up by creating a MONO version, instead of correctly PLACING various instruments both at either one side or the other - OR DEEP BEHIND the front-of-house frontal lead singer position.
In the 70's this was known as Quadrophonic (in it's basic form)
Only a for real stereo (quad) version with DEPTH, recreates the sound played from various positions within the studio room.
Putting everything in the ONE frontal (vocals) channel - crowds the sound of the lead singer - forcing them to be amplified louder (just to be heard, above everything else), whereas, placement correctly, around a room, via positional channels allows the lead singer's vocals to be un-forced, yet louder than everything else, while different instruments can be heard at different placements either side as well as front - to back.
YES - Great musicianship and vocal perfection, pity they didn't have a sound engineer who knew WTF they were doing, putting all mics into one channel, instead of spreading the mic channels OUT around the "played environment" - to allow anyone with a basic stereo (two speaker) player to hear the crisp vocals out front - with some instruments either side and the somewhat diffused backing tracks, muffled somewhat at he rear of the room.
ONLY A FOR-REAL (analogue decodable) multi-channel system of recording, will provide a normal (commercial) stereo 2 speaker system, to hear the backing instruments and side channels, below the loud crispness of a front-of-house lead singer, at center stage (even if they were all sitting on a couch as these musicians were.
It's a sure fire way - to make your covers (and originals) sound like professional players in a band, just by placement of mic channels in a final recording, than shoving everything into a singular MONO that messes up the "positioning" of the different instruments and crowds the lead singers vocals.
Professional studios always tried to drag all "multiple recorded mic channels" down into either one or the other or both (as a front mono) - or to PAN ACROSS these, L & R channels to try and recreate a positional effect (not merely at one side or the other, nor at the front only).
Sadly - none of the NORTHERN HEMISPERE or well known anywhere, professional studios, using upwards of 32 channel mastering boards, ever knew there was a far simpler way.
      MY WAY.
That of using all NINE master channels, to down-mix into (from their multiple mic channels) - thereby allowing a natural progression into a "playable" 2 channel commercial stereo system (naturally).
As - away back in 1965 I accidentally discovered an extremely easy way to DEPLEXER-DECODE any 2 channel stereo recording, into a NINE WAY ANALOGUE surround sound system.
One that could then be additionally un-mixed - out to and beyond a mere 32 mastering studio's channels.
But see, as a very poor rural farmer's son, in the depths of the NZ Countryside, - how and why - should i have ever made it known, where all of those channels were.?
After all, it was my 1965 (12 year old's) invention that enabled me to un-mix the down-mixed masters - made and released commercially from the Northern Hemisphere's so called professional studios.
Something that allowed me to here ALL of the natural "nuances and flavours" (as well as timbres and effects), of otherwise semi-flat 2 channel stereo recordings.
After all, I wasn't purely interested in simply PLAYING the music I could thus un-mix, but went on to completely PLAY-WITH those as well, by intermixing the "found" extra channels, as well as timing the inverted (reverse played) originals back into themselves, to find that I could create my OWN FOUND harmonics, from within the musical pieces themselves, that enabled me to "position" the harmonics - the same way, every time I played-with these.
I also discovered that I could then REMASTER those (myself), into totally different sounding versions of the originals - such that even local musicians couldn't tell how i had made their music sound different, or for others, to be unable to "spot" where their singing started, as the singing was often NOT included in my remasters.
Deliberately time/beat destroying the original musicians ability to "sing along" - let alone karaoke anything.
Especially when I loved nothing better, than "playing-with" songs that I started to play one way and end in complete reverse, folding over & into themselves along the way in very subtle forms.
Most of my video experiments, that I uploaded here over ten years ago, were done just to prove it possible, the old ANALOGUE way, mostly done by splicing my own 3/8" remastering tapes, or deliberately playing those old reel-to-reel tapes in the wrong direction.
Having fun was my motto - as after all, any stupid (average purchaser) person could simply PLAY any commercially released tune, whereas only I could PLAY-WITH-IT to create my own tunes.
Between 2003 & 2007 I had fitted my own 4wd Delica Van with a hand-built 7.3 (PLUS ONE) 25 speaker system, that I hard wired a few coloured LEDs and Neon tubes across the terminals of some speakers (as VU meters for my own eyes to see) - that pulsated and glowed brightly, whenever any speaker was driven hard (taking the DC Clipping voltages away from the AC voice coils of the various speakers), which I enjoyed as I drove around the regions of Southland & Otago, to the delight & amusement of the likes of Dunedin's varsity students, who loved nothing better (when half drunk), than jumping inside the rear of my van (when I had to stop at traffic lights) - to discover a virtual disco happening inside it, with way out wonderful music, most of which they had never known existed.
How do you get these full noise songs they often asked.
In the shops just as you do I'd say - no way your tunes sound way better.
Maybe because I was playing them 100% correctly, instead of them NOT PLAYING a missing 42.7% (that they couldn't ever play - in home stereo 2 channel systems).
But then, who am I apart from an old experimental music remasterer, of the 1960's & 1970's vintage era.?

As a sound engineer do you not think the post-production on the vocals is excessively filtered? Possibly autotuned? She over-emphasing her facial expressions like a lip-syncer, and when she constantly moves away from the mic her volume doesn't drop, which seems odd. It also seems a little out of sync with the video. She sounded PERFECT. Booth vocals. It was way over-engineered for a sofa jam session, and I'm generally suspicious of her entire performance.
EDIT: I really like this version. And I've watched lots more of these guys since. I'm just raising questions about the recording techniques.

There are ! They're just harder to find. Good thing about internet is you can easily learn how to play music, share it, find friends all around the world to play with and have fun. Bad thing about internet is good musicians are drowned in the mediocre "commercial" soup they call music because, well, anybody can play music, and share it, but not anybody bothers to create good and original sounds. Back in the days, you'd have to be really good to have your music recorded and edited, because it was expensive and you had to find studios and stuff, so only, well, not good, but at least decent stuff came out. Now smartphones and internet made it a lot easier, which of course is awesome, but the bad side of the coin is that good music is harder to find, not because there is less, but because there is way more available music, bad or good.

I agree, though the fanboys here will dislike that! :-) What is convincing me: They recorded this live! This is so charming here, it is living music, not a sterile studio recording. Of course Stealers Wheel is the original track and it was a great hit. But the original song is not always better, than the cover version. Therer are many examples, when the cover version is "better" (always a matter of taste too) than the original, f. i. "With a little help from my friends" - Joe Cocker or "Blue Suede Shoes" as Elvis version, compared with the originals from the Beatles or Carl Perkins. So if someone loves live music, this version has definitely some advantages!

@Jimmi K I didn't think that you voted 👎. I just asked myself why people do this even if it's only a fractional part.

@@RajShekhar-jy2zi - I think it has more to do with their appearance. Short hair, no tats, no piercings, what this 70 year old would describe as "NORMAL" kids!! This is, IMHO, a great cover!!!!

@@RajShekhar-jy2zi It means that they are wearing average suburban kid clothes, have average suburban kid hair etc. They don't have a desperately curated look to show what "artistes" they are. All they are doing is playing and singing extremely well , which is obviously totally boring. They need to put away the instruments and spend more time on their hair and clothes.

such a sick bass tone. I'd love to whack some flat wounds on there see how they'd sound, but I have a feeling its the twang that makes the tone here. would be interesting to hear though.

"This is just another video of some kids trying to perform in their living room, thinking they've got talent," I thought. And then, I was blown away. You guys are good... I mean, really good. I'm a fan.

No kidding..honestly I clicked on them because I thought the dark haired girl was pretty cute and wasn't expecting much but then as soon as they started playing I was like "hey this is actually kinda interesting" and when she sang I was just enthralled with her easygoing natural delivery with no attempt to oversing like I see so much of on RUclips. And the band sounds seriously great and relaxed too, these are obviously a bunch of talented players that aren't interested in ego and have a great "feel" for each other and the music they choose to play....

      not some kids. professional musicians
female singer reina in the middle is 31, bass player josh is 41.

Easy there, little whippersnapper... lol. Okay, maybe not "kids," although... when Reina was born I was already three years out of college and working my first job. Heck, I was 10 when the original song was released - but I think I like this version better. As the old geezer in the room, I guess everyone looks young to me. Now, if you'll excuse me, I've got a shuffleboard game to get back to - if my hip holds out.

This was the first Josh Turner video I saw, and it just so happened to have Reina and Toni in it. Now you know, you can spend hours, weeks, going back and watching all the videos Josh and Carson, and Reina and Toni have done over the years. They are very talented, and they've traveled the world in the last few years, as the Other Favorites and as Reina del Cid, and then they play together too. Really, you are in for a treat. Nobody plays guitar (and just about any other stringed instrument) like Josh.
