- MYSTERY OF THE CIRCLEVILLE LETTERS
We all keep secrets.
For most of us, these are nothing more than minor embarrassing details about ourselves. But some of us have dark secrets which, if discovered, could destroy lives.
For years, the residents of Circleville, Ohio, received bizarre, threatening letters; from someone who somehow knew every salacious detail of their personal lives.
The letters cost people their jobs, their marriages, their freedom, and sometimes, their lives.
Over a thousand letters were sent over *20 years*.
Yet somehow, whoever wrote them got away with it. Or did they?
Officially this case is closed. But for decades, many people felt that the real culprit is still at large.
Let's find out why.

I think this is honestly one of the best channels out here. Good quality, great storytelling. Fantstic research and analysis. Insightful, poignant, and intelligent. You elevate the craft, AJ. Hecklefish is pure genius. Definitely made an avid fan here. Gonna make it my personal mission to help get you the numbers you deserve!
I'm humbled, Para. So glad you found the channel. 🐟❤
I wholeheartedly agree
why don't they get fingerprints off the letters or test for DNA on the back side of the stamp. it hasn't been too long the genetic material should be still recoverable. they caught a WW2 nazi posing as a priest 60yrs later using the same method.
Great channel tho! Seriously! Here have a like and a sub!

I agree! This is the only channel that I have alerts turned ON! I never do that with any other channel.
Who else stumbled across WF, and are now hooked .. awesome work 👏 a lot of people don't realize the research and rabbit holes you have to go through to deliver us an amazing video time after time 😀 👍

This channel was in my recommendations and I have been binge watching. I can’t get enough. Same with the channel called That Chapter, only his channel is true crime specifically. On a binge right now after discovering this channel a couple hours ago.
Meeeee! I ♥️ HeckleFish!

"This story has no heroes or villains, only victims." Ok... so whoever murdered Mary Gillespie's husband is not a villain? Whoever tried to murder Mary with the gun in the box is not a villain?
I find it hard to believe no one noticed a person putting up signs along the bus root. If anything, that is how I would have tried to catch this person, even if I had to hide in a bush for weeks...
Unless he paid people to put them up through the use of letters and proxies
That would be the logical thing to do or set up some trail cameras at least!
Unless the cop was the one putting up the signs... why wasn't the type of car checked with the DMV? Because the cop was in on it?
I was thinking the same thing
The bus route is the key for fact
Always super happy to hear this story. Having lived in circleville my entire life this situation always amazes me that everyone here knows people involved..... Yet few talk about it. Especially the younger generation.
Someday someone will come forward. But will it be true? How will anyone ever know for sure? A very interesting case.

Gets me how the sheriff "wouldn't let" Ron's family look at his truck! Never heard of a local sheriff crushing a family's vehicle without permission, if that rly happened has to be an obvious crime, if they pressed I'm sure he would've at least lost his job
I say the sheriff had an affair with Freshour's wife

The clergy is an interesting idea, Catholic and Anglican are invited to people's homes all the time (I don't know about the others), they can go into schools, there's swap meets, bake sales, Scout meetings ect in their hall's. Might I suggest their ancillary staff, Vergers, cleaners, Catholics and Anglicans have domestic staff, fund raising committee's, you think Priests keep confession to themselves? They'll gossip with the ancillary staff. Not to mention the Protestants are usually married.

There have been cases in the UK where the identity of someone sending letters has been discovered from the stamp. Because the stamp was licked to make it stick to the envelope, DNA was extracted from the dried spit. If any of the letters in this case still survive, there is a remote possibility the sender's DNA still exists on the back of some of the stamps.
Also, typing letters was a really stupid move. Its common knowledge that typed letters can be matched to specific typewriters. The ribbon may also have helped to prove who wrote the letters.
Also the design and style of the script can indentify someone, sometimes.
They probably weren't typed... they were probably painted on using some type of stencil process
And anyone sending a volume of post would have a spongeblock...
Yep, typewriters are like fingerprints.
@@wealthmaterialized too difficult
I think it was the local catholic priest who heard everyone's confessions.
The strange handwriting was done in "Block Style," to make it nearly impossible to do handwriting analysis. Block letters cannot be shown to belong to any one person. Thus the disparity. A good lawyer would have had that evidence struck down.
A Police Officer in a highly significant position is the major culprit, and that goon is who put together the gang.
@@dudleydoright3398 I could be convinced, but I am unaware of any motive he would have. Do you know of one?
@@perryshaffer8358 Yes. Will get back w/you.
Oh, by the way, I have to ask -- why didn't anyone INVESTIGATE HIM?? Did anyone check to see if he was having sex parties, or having his kids etc., have sex parties?? That too is part of that trashy CIA gig.
And there's way more to this than just his sex parties.
From everything I've read it wasn't all block type writing though. Some show, I think 60 minutes hired a forensic expert and had her look a Paul freshours handwriting from letters sent to friends and things like that and compare them to 49 of the anonymous letters and she said in her opinion without a doubt it was him. Also they supposedly found his fingerprints on about a dozen of the letters that were sent.
I'm not gonna lie, I am addicted to this show. Everyday since I have found this channel I watch every single episodes that I can find. Amazing work. 👏. Every episode keeps me on the edge of my seat.

You are one crazy tomato 🍅 😜 🤪
I love this channel, this channel always keep me clam with everything you make, thanks for all your doing.❤️
It makes me clam too I thought I was the only one
The first letter read points to the fact that the letter writer’s girlfriend was another one of the bus drivers. “according to my gf you have asked her out many times AND HAVE ASKED THE OTHER FEMALE BUS DRIVERS TOO…”
That’s a pretty substantial clue.
It could also point to Mary Gillispie who wanted to break up the superintendents marriage and have him for herself. She could have written the letters to herself, she could have tampered with the car and placed the threatening call to her her husband, and she could have placed the gun behind the sign, that she conveniently found.
Just sayin’…

My husband introduced me to the channel. I admit I kind of rolled my eyes like, whatever dude. I am proud to say I am now OBSESSED! 🙏🏻❤
I love the channel and my husband (who’s a truck driver) and I thought the Hecklefish part was hilarious. I respectfully disagree that a resolution to this mystery shouldn’t be sought however. A man was possibly wrongfully convicted and imprisoned and someone was almost murdered. This means a would-be killer is still possibly on the loose.
And it sounds like there was probably one suicide as a result, too. I agree. This is an extremely serious matter that should be investigated thoroughly.
KillerS
Most likely it was the principal’s wife. She found out about the affair and decided to get back by exposing it to the public. That way her husband would be forced to resign due to the affair and he would pay her alimony once they got divorced. This is why you shouldn’t cheat on your significant other: karma bites you back hard. I wonder why the police never thought to investigate her. She would certainly have motive to write the letters plus pinning the blame on someone else for the blackmailing (that what this was, blackmail) would make her look like an innocent victim.
Miranda why force someone to lose their job if you want to collect alimony from them.
@@OneOut1 Simple: payback.
Stumbled upon this channel 5 days ago and have been slowly chipping away at the catalogue. While I typically don't speak of "sidekicks", Hecklefish is just the perfect amount of spice to the stew of information. Highly entertaining, interesting, and thought provoking. Subscribed with bells on!
Not much goes on in a small town without it being known. Everyone is neighbors, everyone has family in ever neighborhood, everyone went to school with half the town and their older or younger siblings went to school with the rest of the town. Everyone works together for small projects and keep in touch on EVERYTHING going on. Its very strange to me that these signs could be put up on main roads without the person being caught. No matter the time of night. No matter the location. Makes me feel like many people whom are in the know and has the pulse of the town were helping with the signs.
Regardless of who actually wrote the letters, it strikes me the criminal mind the culprit had in order to devise a hellish sort of bomb using a handgun cocked inside a box....Just think of the lengths he had to go to plan it, then actually get it ready, and the time it took him to place it nearby so the gun would fire itself pointing at the spot where someone would be trying to take the sign off....An insane amount of time , hard work plus the danger of being seen by a passerby. A real sicko, the sob....

"The villain is Karen".......huh......funny how that worked out
..spoiler alert
I live around Circleville and can say that this is a story that gets passed around from time to time. I actually went to Westfall School district. My Mom had told me she had received a letter when this had been going on. She doesn't have it anymore and I myself have no proof of it's existence. However this is something I've been looking for more info on. Thank you for the post!
She tell you what it said? Or is it too salacious in detail?
I suspect that you're telling a tall tale Pinocchio.
I imagine a lot of people in the area did receive prank letters.
I just google'd it and seems to be lots of information on this subject there.

The real question is, are Figs worthy of plunder?
There are some really good ones. Look all the way back.
Of course it was a Karen...
"The stress brought us together! That's what caused the affair!"
Most pathetic excuse there is
It's so weird for me to come across something like this. I live in Circleville and nothing ever happens here. I've lived here most of my life, I'm 40 now and I don't remember any of this, but I asked my mom about it and she does. I was born in 1982 so it was before my time, but I've never even heard anything about this.
Really?? I’m surprised so many ppl in the comments haven’t heard of this. I’ve seen it covered on multiple channels (although this is the best analysis IMO) but I first saw it on Unsolved Mysteries
@@bunnyluver2176 Nope, I had no idea. I've heard of the pharmacy bombing that happened before my time, but not this.
I've seen a lot about it. @mrballen covers it too
I'm not surprised, nobody want to expose their "secrets" to the next generation.
I'm from Jamestown, just outside of Xenia...I know several older people who lived in circleville at the time....they got letters...most of them still have them. 1 of them was threatened in his letter and he did exactly what the letter said to him and he CLAIMS he never got another letter, however his wife says that he got another letter thanking him for "doing the right thing"
No one suggested the Sheriff! Who else would immediately crush the victim's vehicle, throw an innocent man in jail over forced identical handwriting and also know SO much about the town? B&E's are also very easy for police if they wanted to snag a pistol. If anyone caught them or saw them on their property all they'd have to say is, "We received a phonecall about a ...". Also, the phonecall to Mary's husband was a male. Former NCIS agent here suggests a closer look at the sheriff from these clues, although I'd cover all basis by studying the case in it's entirety before making any serious accusations.
Finally got a day off, now to sit and binge this channel once more! Absolutely love the content, hopefully one day the algorithm will agree!
I absolutely LOVE this channel! I love your videos. This was covered by Unsolved Mysteries years ago. Like I’ve said before, your show is the baby of Rod Sterling’s Twilight Zone and Unsolved Mysteries.
One thing I don’t understand is how anyone could have known that Ron Gillispie received a call from the letter writer?
It’s not likely that he told the kids, who probably didn’t know any details about any of this. So, who brought forth that piece of information, or was it just based on speculation?
Rewatching all these old videos and we told you it'd be just a matter of time until you're over a million subs. Way to go HeckleFish and A.J! I'm SUPER HAPPY for you! :)
lol hecklefish is awesome
@@RobotronSagedo you think the why files guy does heckles voice?
I'm from Circleville and know some persons from the generation when this happened, some of whom were very close to it. What I've heard from them is that everyone knew Paul did it and trusted Sheriff Radcliff, and that the story as reported on "Unsolved Mysteries" and other national sources is one wholly of Paul's devising, disseminated by Martin Yant, whom they view as a collaborator, perhaps seeking notoriety by championing Paul's victimhood. Mary, Karen, and others still living who might refute some of the details have decided to take it to their graves.
I was told that Paul beat Karen, and also that he was kind of a conspiracy minded kook with a persecution complex. Mary told Paul's wife Karen everything--they were best friends--which could explain Paul's intimate knowledge of Mary's life. After the Freshours' divorce, when Karen lost everything, including her children, she lived in a trailor on Mary's land, which would be very odd for someone with a vendetta against Mary.
PS The handwriting expert on "48 Hours" said, essentially, "I have to be 100% certain in my job, because if I make a mistake someone could get the death penalty for a murder they didn't commit, and I'm telling you Paul wrote the letters," while the psychological profiler merely said (paraphrasing), "Seems like it might be a woman, but I can't say definitively."
I looked through the comments section for twenty minutes to find one as useful as yours.
So how did he mail the letters from solitary confinement, where a person isn't allowed any communication in or out? Do you think the prison guards would just let him out of prison so he could go jogging to mail the letters from another city?
Until that is explained, it's clear that he couldn't possibly be guilty.
@@scottk3292 I don't know, but clearly there were multiple writers.

Great video AJ, but I did better than you, because I solved the Circleville Letter writer mystery. It was Sheriff Dwight Radcliff and he was discovered by Ron Gillispie and that's why he covered up evidence relating to his Ron's death. Also, Yes there was someone else helping the Sheriff...

Not to sound sexist but in my experience, when you’re dealing with that kind of jealousy and words like “homewrecker” are thrown around . . . Let’s just say that in my 33 years living amongst the dregs of society, guilty of every sin of lust that the mind can fathom, having found myself mediator of and likewise in the very midst of every conceivable kind of drama and scandal, I’ve still never even ONCE heard a man use that word. These were written by a woman. 100%
I've studied this story for so long it's so fascinating to me. I remember watching an unsolved mysteries episode with this case when I was 8 and have been obsessed ever since. I also think Mary was a serious suspect no one looked at
My biggest problem with this event is, it’s quite possible the culprit was someone above suspicion and, more importantly, unrelated to any of the victims. A vengeful, vindictive outsider that worked for the school system. Someone who hated Massey. When his or her plan went off the rails, they hated everyone involved.
It's just karma just like the punisher he dealt with it himself
The sheriff?
Definitely the sheriff.

I love and am addicted to this channel! The stories are well-researched and well-explained, and the sprinkle of interjections of Hecklefish's humor keeps it from being just a dissertation of facts! I especially like that the possible truth of the story comes at the end, so the listener can get caught up in the story before finding out if it was debunked or not! Awesome job AJ and HF!

"Tact is loving people more than they deserve"
If you looked at this with a true 'problem solving' mindset, you would start with the original letters and the details given. So, it names off a few unscrupulous people doing bad things...possibly illegal things. Now, ask yourself on each one, 'who KNEW of this, enough to write a confident letter on each point?' Next, from each letter, you would get a list of names. Now, compare the lists, and look for common names that appear on ALL lists (access to an employee number should be the 'refinement search' to really limit it down). Now...notice one name that does not appear on ANY list? I caught it, at the moment the truck was found wrecked (and with what happened to it)...NO law enforcement personnel were looked at, and the sheriff was NEVER brought up as a possible suspect...even though he QUICKLY had the truck crushed, no questions were asked about the one shot from the pistol, etc., and lastly, the wording to Paul while in jail about 'we framed you'...who else would make 'routine trips to Columbus' without suspicion (for prison transfers, etc., as well as to drop letters)? That no state or federal investigation into THIS specific venue occurred, is very possibly why the 'letter writer' knew so much, provoked so much, and yet was never approached.
I just watched my first WF video today and have now binge-watched five or six episodes. Subject matter is squarely in my wheelhouse. Having read some previous comments, I cannot agree more. Writing, presentation and production value are all exceptional, especially when compared to other channels covering similar material. I appreciate the unique approach to these subjects. Please keep up the top-notch work.
It was probably more than one person and it was a personal vendetta between two couples. I think they all had a hand in it. Small town law enforcement drop the ball on cases like this very often. Usually due to bias or corruption.
Great job as always. This is absolutely one of my favorite channels on any social media platform. Smart, unbiased, analysis delivered with entertaining and insightful commentary. Doesn’t get better than this. My first comment on any platform, hoping to help you defeat the algorithm!

Your closing remarks were especially appreciated. You bring a great voice to what others just use to get clicks. Kudos to you.
I don't agree with them. The guilty party should be found, the only reason he or she wasn't was because the law was corrupt in suppressing evidence.
So Karen and her boyfriend set up everything by just writing letters that were lies, this sounds familiar because I went through something similar but beat the lies before I spent 10 years in prison, even the divorce/custody situation!

Remember that other UM case of the elderly couple that was being attacked? They staked out the house and could catch no one responsible. They were seriously attacked and put in the Hospital. They had relatives watching and neighbors but no one could be seen.
It never will since theyre probably dead already whoever did it
With the general reduction in people's attention spans nowadays, I am always pleased at how enthralled I am at all of your videos. Like the other commenters here, your videos are well-researched, well-conveyed and very entertaining.
Someone should pay for that man's missing 10 years of life!
Death to the evil algorithm but more power to The Why files! Another great contribution to human knowledge from AJ and the wonderful Hecklefish! Although I am no fan of "Celebrity Culture" I am seriously thinking of starting up a Hecklefish fan club!
Oh, he would like that, Steve.
Do it!!
I'm not sure H-fish needs any more encouragment, he's already pretty incouragable... but we love him :)
I've a secret that so many are begining to know...
That this is a damn good channel..👍👌👏👍👌👏👍👍
That was a well structured, dramatic comment! Need to hire you for the writing staff.
I totally agree 👍
No idea why this popped up on my feed but this guys voice is hypnotic .great channel 👏👏
Your content is a breath of fresh air. Thank you..
And know that YOU are appreciated
Every time I see one of your thumbnails and think, "That doesn't look that great. I don't even know what that's referring to," it turns out to be a great piece. This is an excellent example.
Excellent production - so many fine little sounds added and swipes at just the right time. Really exceptional work and quality - comedy with the fish is awesome and actually funny
Quite possibly the best channel on YT. Every story is perfect ! Keep up the good work !
Also Mr Ballen. If you like this channel and haven't checked out his.. Definitely do!
If I were Paul I'd have gone right back into prison cause after a decade of being inside I'd have some vendettas to settle
I would’ve needed a huge payout from the state or yeah I’d be getting muddy and taking a boat to the third world to live out the rest of my days 👍🏾
I've heard about this Circleville story. Can't wait to see the solution to this decades old mystery.
I wish I could have fully solved this one, Susan.
Oh my. This one was soooo good. It kept me on the edge of my chair with all the twists, turns and surprises. Very, very well presented!! Your videos really draw the listener in. Love it. Keep it up A.J.! You’ve got the best content out there.
I think it was the Sheriff✌😎
I live in Circleville. It's a typical small American town. Rumors abound. Back in 2021, 48 Hours Mystery did a story on the letters. It's pretty interesting and seems to follow what I've always heard about these letters. It's worth the watch.
I think u are thinking of Unsolved Mysteries
The names Jerry😜
@@gdiaz8827 ….nope, 48 Hours did one too.
The only way to get an unmarked (no return address) letter out of a jail/prison is to have an accomplice on the streets. Because jails/prisons will not let mail out that has no return address. Your name, ID number, unit, and cell all have to be on it. So the dude would have had to have mailed out sealed letters for his accomplice to then open and mail out. Definitely possible, but super obvious. Jails/prisons screen mail for this kind of thing. So super unlikely.
Little Trouble In Big China 😂😂😂😂😂❤
I remember hearing about this case years ago, but nothing about the signs in the road and everything afterwards. Strange how it seems I missed that somewhere.
Fascinating story well-told. Having lived in a village and attended school in a town, I wonder how it can be, no-one saw the signs being put-up. Also, kudos to the person who caught-on to the typewriter-ribbon aspect of the letters.
Love the amount of work you put into your videos! Your channel will grow in no time!
It should be pretty easy to determine who the culprit, or culprits, were by a simple DNA analysis of the backside of the stamps, particularly on the early letters, and match it to relative DNA.
After all, the culprit tried to murder Mary Gillispie, possibly murdered Ron Gillispie and most likely sent an innocent man to jail for 10 years.
What I would love to know is what sleazy information the culprit had on the sheriff and the judge that made made them both botch the case.
I just discovered this channel. Im in love
The channel loves you back, Drox. 🐟❤
This is the third time I have heard this. I love your version. Yours is so far the best out there. You have more details. The overall presentation was just perfect 👌. I am glad I came across your channel.
I think the person who wrote the letter had to have worked for the school district.Either a bus driver, maintance man or some else. They should have gone to the cops and sentbthe letters to the FBI.The people who received the letters that is.
My first thought was that the letter was from a jilted female bus driver or other employee of the school.
Looks like Karen lived up to her now well-known behavior model we all use for that psychopathic behavior.
How is it that you don't have at least a million subscribers. This is literally the best channel I have ever stumbled across
If I wasn't already subscribed, I would have done so just for the Big Trouble In Little China reference. My favorite movie.
And this is the best channel on RUclips. I love the subject matter and the production value is excellent. I love how an admitted skeptic gives an objective look in extreme detail and lets the viewer make up their own mind.
You have great taste, I've watched that movie more times than I can count.
Same. Such a fun film.
Do it for old Jack Burton!

"It's like I told my last wife. I says honey I never drive faster than I can see, and besides that it's all in the reflexes."
@@LeCigareVolant Me too. Had it on VHS and now I have it on DVD.
These letters sound like theyre from a woman. It's definitely Pauls wife. Most women can & have forged their husbands signature and can write exactly like their husband. Usually only women are so indictive and insert themselves in others immoral business especually if that woman was cheated on. If she finds that other women that have committed adultery, they believe its ok to punish those women.
