Hey Mr Ballen, at about 1:45 minutes in the video, I just wanna let you know, you said they were in the Pacific, but they were off the coast of Massechusets (idk if I spelled that right) so it wouldve been the Atlantic Ocean. Sorry to be that guy but I figured you'd wanna know. I also just corrected the like buttons spelling lol.
@@grizz865 No. Mr. Ballen is correct. The ship left Massachusetts and wound up going around the end of South America into the Pacific in an effort to find whales.
Then he wrote a letter to them a second time saying, “If you are on my side, and you will listen to my voice, take the heads of the men, your master’s sons, and come to me at Jezreel tomorrow about this time.” Now the king’s sons, seventy persons, were with the great men of the city, who were rearing them. When the letter came to them, they took the king’s sons and slaughtered them, seventy persons, and put their heads in baskets, and sent them to him at Jezreel.
That was a compelling lead up. I actually had no idea what the question was and was really curious until the reveal. Tragic and terrifying, but very interesting, too.
on the flip-side I kind of figured early in the video, but it was still enjoyable and seemed quite harrowing in any case. im quite curious to know how hard it is to fish for food while stranded on a huge whaling boat for the time.
As soon as he said something about a younger cousin i knew immediately what story this was. Its even sadder when you realize that they avoided an island that would have saved them for fear of cannibalism.
It seems when Mr Ballen has long video's people start asking for the three shorter video format. Then when he does a few of those people say "hey where's your longer videos"?? Lets all be happy with what we get. He and his videos are a National treasure😊. Lets be happy with ALL his amazing work.
To those who are saying Ballen's videos are "going downhill", he's literally got a family, a charity and a podcast to juggle alongside his RUclips Channel. The quality hasn't gone downhill, it's actually pretty consistent.
I had the idea when he first started growing that he had his feet in too many buckets, which may also be what people are feeling. I understand wanting lots of money but sometimes it does feel like overkill when you already have a successful RUclips channel, and then make a podcast, and then start selling merch (which I’m sure ppl were asking for), and creating a charity all while having a growing family. Don’t get me wrong, i think he still does a good job, he’s just less jokey and more serious than he was when he started. He also used to upload 5-6 times a week, maybe that’s what people are talking about?? He’s truly a professional and I think his growth only shows that.
I’m so proud of John for how far he’s come. It’s crazy what he’s done armed with being able to tell a good story. True raconteur. I know he’s got a lot to do but I miss when he used to upload a couple times a week.
What’s also creepy is that apparently when the ship pulled along side the little boat, the 2 survivors were seen shoving their pockets full of cracked bones for the bone marrow.
@@dorjedriftwood2731 There's an excellent book titled "In The Heart of the Sea" that gives a complete account of the Essex--the whaling ship in question--and all of the horrifying events leading up to their rescue.
Well, since another sailor died of starvation after Owen died, then perhaps his death was more merciful. Still, what a gruesome experience for those men to endure.
They apparently didn't have it in them to play the game again and let Darwin determine the winners. I always suspected that rugby team that crashed into the Andes of doing that to one of the pilots who initially survived the crash. One of them made a comment in in interview about the one pilot being alive but in bad shape, and they were pissed at him, so no one helped him and he died. It probably was from the crash but the way the guy said it was a little sus.
@Brad Sanders - as I remember (I’m admittedly old) the pilot was alive but severely injured, pinned into his chair as the front of the crashed plane had caved inwards. The co-pilot had died on impact and was one of the first eaten. At least they had the snow so they could keep all the bodies refrigerated as it were until they finished consuming one entirely. They sought to leave as many as possible undefiled. The women were to be the final last resort.
@@bradsanders407 I know a guy who decided to eat human flesh for the hell of it. I worked with his brother. But yea there was an accident on the job site that left loose flesh on the ground, and the guy just ate it. I don’t know if he witnessed the accident which sent him into a shock or blackout or made him lose his mind or what. He wasn’t even involved in the accident, merely a witness to it. And he just….ate it. But the man who’s flesh he ate didn’t die, so it wasn’t illegal to consume his flesh. It’s so gross he said it was chewing and he couldn’t even break it apart he just chomped on it and had to swallow it whole…I say this because regarding the players in the Andes, I couldn’t imagine eating an entire corpse knowing how chewy the meat is…I believe they did it. But it couldn’t have been an easy thing to do mentally or physically
Well, they didn't start eating the dead for at least 10 days after the plane crash. And when you're suffering starvation, by God, you'll do almost anything to stay alive and stop that suffering. As for you're friend who consumed human flesh just for the hell of it... Be afraid. Be very afraid. And stay far, far away!
When I heard that infamous name, I knew exactly where this story was going. I'm grateful to now have more details as to how this situation played out between those unfortunate four men.
@@Kat_12389Exactly. And this incident was in 1821, and most other incidents I've heard of that take place in developed countries are in extreme survival situations.
@@Irish_Georgia_Girl cannibalism takes place mostly under desperate conditions as you stated, but there are some tribes which are cannibalistic and barbaric as of yet. Owen Chase’s book (obviously a first account of the Moby Dick story) is a great book and explains everything they went through in great detail. Highly recommend reading it to anyone who’s interested in learning more :)
That was only for like 3 months MAX. But he used that intro forever. I used to always say..."Liar!" Lol whenever he had that piece on the intro. Glad he changed that part. I know it wasn't at the time a job for him so i couldn't complain. But i think now this is his job. I believe he is retired from the military, so thats good. He puts out at least 1 video a week. Before all he was doing for a while was "remastering" his old videos. We talk about this w everyone at work. No one listens to him there anymore. I keep telling everyone he is doing new videos again so they need to give him a go again.
He’s really refined his final product, & speaks much more confidently & comfortably now. Personally- I’d be happy if he just focused on his RUclips channel which of course is the best! 😊
Old school whaling was a pretty crazy job, sometimes depending on what happened on your trip you could come back from sea after being away for a year and actually end up owing the company you worked for.
@@BusinessSkrub yeah so why not argue why the weather is so dangerous since people die of lightning strikes. Exactly the same depressing take on reality. Wow wee! I thought Owen asked the question at the beginning of the expedition, which seemed totally insane to me. But as the story unfolded I realized he was sacrificing himself to save others. Makes you think. Doesn't it? "Could I have done this?" Yes, perhaps I could, in such a terrifying situation. You did it again Mr. Ballen! You are the Master Storyteller! You kept me hanging on every word and at the edge my seat, about to fall off the couch! Keep it up, young man!!
yeah I think he might have purposely held on to the smallest strip of paper and pretended to pull it out of the hat even though it was always in his hand. so nobody else would have to die.
I don't think so. Owen wasn't the first to draw. I would imagine the person holding the hat is the last to draw/doesn't draw and takes the one remaining. If he had done what you said, the 3rd person to draw would notice there was only 1 strip left in the hat when they put their hand in. Since Owen/the hat holder could have also done the same thing but to cheat and hang on to a longer piece, that 3rd person noticing only 1 strip left would probably point it out and not draw. I know that's a detailed take but I seriously doubt Owen did that, which still does not reduce his honor one bit.
As far as if I could do it myself, I actually think Owen's position is the easiest. Especially since they were lucky enough to have a gun. Although I guess I'm forgetting that they all had eaten tons of flesh already.
Cannibals go to hell so I don’t think there would be any point pondering over the trauma of murdering your friends and then cutting their bodies open to eat their flesh. It’s inhuman, plain and simple, there is no rationalizing it, if you had any humanity you’d starve to death in silence and keep your common decency without descending into savagery. Screw survivalism, we all have to die at some point, better die like a human being instead of behaving like animals.
As awful as this story is, you can see the goodness of human beings shine through in even the most unimaginably dark times. It's actually inspiring how good these people were, and how strong Owen was, I can't believe that. That's a real man right there.
Sad story. And to throw in another twist was that even though they were consuming food, it was enough to satisfy their hunger but not enough to put meat on their bones because the bodies they were eating lacked fat. They would not have lived much longer.
I know right? I always have a reason to look forward to Sundays because of his videos! I was especially looking forward to this one after the teaser he put out a couple of days ago and as usual he did not disappoint! This one was exceptionally good IMO. I had kind of thought it'd have something to do with cannibalism after reading the preview to it, but I totally did NOT see what really happened coming! He blew me away with his ability to create and maintain the suspense so long without giving it away! 🤯
I want to say... Your language revealing what happened was very... I don't know, but I really appreciate it. Calling it SACRED really honors the man who made the sacrifice. This sits well with me. He definitely deserves to be honored.
Being lost in the sea and stranded with only a few people is a such a hopeless scenario for me. I go a day without eating anything and I feel the worse. A day without sleep and it's awful but what these man went through is nothing compared to me. Such a terrifying situation to be in.
U may have nutrient deficiencies... Do u drink lots of water and eat healthy? The human should be able to easily and comfortably go a day wout eating. I fast everyday...and each month I fast for three days str8, w fruit juices and water only.

Mr. Ballen! I just wanted to let you know how appreciated you are. I've been a fan for a long time and I hope your life is everything you want it to be. Thanks for the strange dark and mysterious.
I was already familiar with this story. Once you said the name Owen Coffin, I knew what was coming. It was a well delivered story about the cannibalism. I had no idea that was a tradition at sea. If you want to hear more about the voyage of the Essex Ask A Mortician does a good video.
As soon as I heard the name Owen Coffin I instantly knew where this was going. I remember hearing this story from Buzzfeed’s Ruining History hosted by Ryan and Shane. The story was said to have inspired Monty Dick. This video really brought home how horrifying the story actually would have been for the poor people who had been caught up in it.
Owen Coffin is my 6th Cousin 7x Removed. Insane. I’m big into genealogy and realize I had coffins on my biological father’s side so I ran through and found that he’s also descended from Peter Coffin.
I started driving my sister to work, an hour trip, leaving at 5am. I just got her into your channel and I can't thank you enough for these videos. We actually look forward to the drive, listening to the strange, dark and mysterious in story format, blasting the heater and watching the sunrise ❤️👍
I read the book " The Terrible Voyage" which is about this incident. Captain Owen Coffin was a whaling ship captain who set forth from Nantucket with his crew, including his 10-year-old nephew, making his first long-term trip to sea, serving as a "Cabin Boy". This was the first ship ever to get rammed and sunk by a whale. The book is spellbinding and the voyage was terrible. Owen Coffin survived, but his nephew was eaten to sustain others. Yes, Herman Melville read it before he wrote Moby Dick, a classic fictional story. I think there is a mistake here. Captain Owen Coffin survived the voyage and his sister understood why he had to allow her son to be eaten and did not hold it against him. There were three lifeboats and Captain Coffin and his nephew were on board one of them. In the end, the Captain had the only gun and he dared not fall asleep or the other sailor would have killed and eaten him. The other sailor had the same fear. A ship appeared and they were rescued. An amazing true story.
OMG...wait... you mean that they killed a child to eat instead of using this custom to choose an adult?? Because to me that's horrible! It's one thing for someone to volunteer but I doubt a kid that young could volunteer...or am I wrong about that part?
@@Irish_Georgia_Girl The kid was fated to die anyway , as a kid I guess but no, a 10yo who lived as an adult could've made this decisions even it's hard to understand for us now.
As an avid fisherman I find it mind boggling that in a sea full of fish they never considered fishing for their food instead of eating people. Even without fishing rods or terminal tackle it would be fairly easy to improvise and fashion a hand line. Not a very resourceful lot.
@@surfcat2051 I'm sure they tried, likely the reason they got to the point of starvation was because that option was already exhausted. Hard to feed that many people when you can barely catch something

I'm related to Owen, so thank you for telling part of my family's story. Wish you could've told about the time leading too and just after the whale. The Ironic part of this is they refused to head to some islands nearby due to cannibal tribes residing on them.

I’ve heard the story of this maritime expedition, and not long after you had begun setting the first parts of the scene, I knew which historical people and event you were telling us about. Despite that, despite knowing the story, it’s main characters, it’s antagonist, it’s conflict, and it’s conclusion, I am reminded in a tangible way, what sets your story telling apart from others, it’s the initial explanation of what is happening, only allowing for the most bare minimum of details to be given, while still providing enough detail that the listener is able to understand what is happening, and then the gradual revelation of more and more specifics, as “this long metal object” becomes “a *****” and so on, until at the story’s crescendo nothing is left vague, everything comes together, and a truly strange, dark, and mysterious event is experienced by the listener as closely to being present among the people of the story as is possible through your chosen medium. And the fact that you took just one aspect, only a partial piece of one of several different group’s unique journeys which make up the entirety of this famous maritime nightmare, and were able to deliver a complete, satisfying entry into the Mr. Ballen catalogue, may demonstrate the quality of your gift and your craft as much, if not more then the yarn itself that you spin. Another of the highest quality John. Thank you. Have a good week, and God bless you.

As soon as he said Owen Coffin i knew what story this was. So pleased to hear Mr. Ballen tell it!

I keep telling everyone he is doing new videos again so they need to give him a go again.

yeah I think he might have purposely held on to the smallest strip of paper and pretended to pull it out of the hat even though it was always in his hand. so nobody else would have to die.
@@ruby4751Goodness gracious! I never thought of that. You are probably right though!
I think he knew it would be better to die than eat a friend. 🤷🏼♀️
Thanks for the great entertaining story telling! I love that the stories are real, rare and creepy! I’ve been watching your stories all morning!

Maybe for a female, but for the rest of us I ain’t goin down that easy. If I gotta eat somones liver I’m eating it
I'd rather live. If I have to eat some people to live, so be it. It's not the worst thing ever.
@@zachsiner383 🙄
They also could have avoided it if they didn’t assume all of africa was cannibalists. So ya know
Appreciate your comment even before watching lol 👌🏽

Loved this one on the live show and loved listening to it again!
Love how you covered this story!
The strange dark and mysterious can ONLY be told in a Mr Ballen format💯❗️
RIP, Owen.
Uhh ok
@Mbita Acoustic what this
I suggest we all consider a strike on Mr. Ballen. He's been exploiting our interest on him for years now. Feom the drastic quantity deduction to the unreal quality reduce these weeks, Mr. Ballen challanges our endurance because he knows that no matter what he does, we will still watch him and even support him on various platforms and patreon. Ugly fact!
Anyone know of other good channels like mr ballen?
I love your shows Mr. Ballen.
I've heard the account before but you give it such a graphic visual I was horrified the entire story. Bloody beards and all. Imagine how starving they were to not even wait for the fire. 🔥
Ducked out for a while but I’m so glad I’m back listening to all these! Thank you for sharing these stories with us and taking time to make them. Your the greatest ❤
THAT was an awesome explanation of his gift of story telling. The gift that keeps so many of us anxiously awaiting to hear the next story he will tell us!
Absolutely spot on! ❤
An old story well told is always good as new.
Well said. Agreed
Thank you!! We try really hard to make these stories as impactful as possible!
@imagewell5319 ~ If comments could be given awards here like on Reddit, I'd absolutely give your's one! What a PERFECT description that is of the experience I actually had while watching this video! You sooo nailed it on the head. You even earned a compliment from DA MAN HIMSELF!!! 🎉 👏 😎
This reminded me of that guy Jose Alvarenga who holds the record for being adrift at sea. 438 days. That’s just insane.
Poor man was so haunted when he came back. He was dealing with PTSD and thoughts about the parasites in him getting to his brain. His story was just harrowing. And all those near misses where he and his friend could have been rescued. Then he was lost by himself. That was incredible fortitude just to survive. I hope he’s doing better and having much more peaceful and beautiful days with his family now.
@@merriquelynn Some people have been through unimaginable pain and suffering. You would think after a few weeks or couple months hopelessness would have consumed him and he would have gave up. To keep fighting for that many days is just unreal.
Yes! Same. Amazing story of survival.
Didn't Mrballen do a video about him
@@lilafeldman8630 yes he did.
