'Nothing is more dangerous than someone with nothing left to lose.' 'If you go down, you may as well go down swinging.' Lot of respect for Vladimir and his army. 🙌
It's this attitude that got Nando Parrado out of the Andes to find help for his friends after their plane crash. "I was dead anyway, so I had nothing to lose," he later said.
Sabaton, a band that writes songs about military warfare throughout history, wrote a song about this event called “Attack of the Dead Men”. Once I heard “Osowiec” I knew the story and was very excited to hear it told by MrBallen.
I'm currently recovery from radiation and chemotherapy that I received due to head and neck cancer. I can't taste anything nor swallow. I have to be tube fed. It is a very bleak life style. This story had me in tears and has inspired me to fight and never give up. Thank you for such an inspiring story. God bless you.
I made it !! I kicked cancer's ass !! I'm completely cancer free now and I'm doing great. That was a low point in life but the struggle is over. Thank you so much for your kind thoughts and words of encouragement. It's people like you that carried me through this experience.
One of the many things I love about the Mr Ballen channel is how he never assumes knowledge. Even if a term is fairly well known like “trench” he’ll still explain it anyway, really feels like he’s making the effort to keep everybody on the same page.
@@mitchellsmusic726yes, I agree. A lot of us are more familiar with kilometers rather than miles, and vice versa. Mr Ballen is always going the extra mile for his audience, and that's a definite plus.
this might be the most insane story i’ve ever heard. and hearing you having to be bleeped for the first time really added to the dramatization. excellently told, mrballen.
the story is partialy true. there were ~400 soldiers in counter offence with artilery support, german offence was cut of reinforsment by artilery, a lot of german soldiers dy from chems as well. the zombie and lung chunks part was madeup in 2009 and was rewritten dozens od times after, becoming part of ruzzian military propaganda
Now THIS would make a HELL of a movie. This is one of the best motivational and inspiring stories I have ever heard. They turned the lowest points of their lives into their greatest strength to overcome literally impossible odds. NEVER EVER GIVE UP!
Thats what I'm saying! BUT if only someone could just reach out to Netflix or something like prime video I bet this movie would be A FUCKING SHOW. but you know how Netflix is nowadays but if you or someone could actually reach out and show them this idea ..
@@Mcdonaldsbag Unfortunately, as great as it would be to have the power to reach out to Netflix directly for an idea submission, they actually have an incredibly stringent process by which they control their creative content. This process does not allow for ANY outsiders' ideas to be pitched, however. The only people who are "allowed" to pitch submissions to Netflix executives are their 8 trusted agents; all of whom are unknown to the general population. The ONLY way this could work is if a ton of freakishly rare situations aligned in syzygy, beginning with the person pitching the idea having a direct and trustworthy connection to one of Netflix's 8 talent agents or execs. Someone out there does have this power, but who??
@@unrestedtank4172 Cool, but a movie about it tho would be so much better but with how nextflix is changing movies up and being "inclusive" doubt it or what about prime video?
Not only was this man a f**king beast but he was 21?! That's INSANELY young to have that much responsibility and pressure and still be that much of a badass.
@J.D. so do Americans. And where he was from doesn't change the balls it would take to do what he did. You couldn't do all that, doesn't matter what country you're fighting for.
I love the attitude of victory in death. We’re all going to die, but they will not achieve victory. They will not claim this fortress. This is OUR fortress, our last post, and well die defending it!

Dear MrBallen, thank you for this incredible story. I'm originally from Russia and had no idea how insane this story really was. You told it so vividly. It means a lot to hear something so inspiring about my own history during such a tough time. Thanks again, and keep being awesome!
This WWI story shows the warrior spirit. Even though they knew they were going to die, Vladimir rallied his troops for one last offensive attack. They didn't lie down and die but fought to the end. I admire the warrior spirit. You told this story so well and I love your stories and podcasts. It is always a great day when I can listen to you! Thanks. MrBallen and team for all your hard work! 💖💞🥰🌻
So much 'If I'm going down you're coming with me' energy. In other words never go after those with literally nothing to lose. Brilliant storytelling as always 👌.
A little TOO unbelievable. For instance, how do they know all of this if every single Russian died? The Germans couldn't have known about this man's orders and what he said/did
Yeah so forcing prisoners to wander in an infinite labyrinth living in fear of being torn limb from limb by the Minotaur may seem harsh to people now, but you *have* to remember 9/11.
This story reminds me of the beautiful poem "If we must die" by Claude McKay If we must die, let it not be like hogs Hunted and penned in an inglorious spot, While round us bark the mad and hungry dogs, Making their mock at our accursèd lot. If we must die, O let us nobly die, So that our precious blood may not be shed In vain; then even the monsters we defy Shall be constrained to honor us though dead! O kinsmen! we must meet the common foe! Though far outnumbered let us show us brave, And for their thousand blows deal one death-blow! What though before us lies the open grave? Like men we’ll face the murderous, cowardly pack, Pressed to the wall, dying, but fighting back! Love your storytelling and ability to capture the raw human emotions behind these events!
I’ve never heard of the story until today, Vladimir’s army was so metal! I can’t imagine fighting so hard, knowing you’re gonna die at any moment. Incredible.
Although agonizing, I’m sure in the end they were all very satisfied as they lay there dying knowing the had not only served their purpose, but genuinely exceeded it. I hope that crossed their minds..
I could imagine the Doom Theme (The Only Thing They Fear Is You) blasting in the background when they opened the gates of the fortress to rush the creeping germans. What a terrifying yet glorious battle that was.
@Don't Read My Profile Photo I just have to say, your marketing with don’t read my name etc all the way into your profile is one of the most genius ways to market. I legit clicked all the way through. Brilliantly done mate
I always listen to your videos when i’m working out. Got a bad injury that i’m still recovering from. This video literally motivated me to finish my sets. Thanks Mr Ballen and wow what fearless soldiers the russians are
I was listening and thinking how fortunate I was to be hearing this incredible story told by a master storyteller. No one could have told Vladimir's story better than you have.
This channel is great, and I agree he is a tremendous storyteller but I wonder how he finds some of the specific details, how does he know exactly what the guy was looking at and how he felt? I’m pretty sure he makes some creative choices with all the evidence and punches up the story for entertainment purposes
Dude, this is the most metal historical event I've ever heard of. I love how you told this story, and I'd love to hear more history stuff in the future :)
My Grandfather survived the second gas attacks at Ypres, he was 17 when he enlisted and lied that he was older so he could help the fight. He survived but was captured and spent the remainder of the war as a POW. He was forever changed by these horrific experiences. Thank you for shining a light on this terrible attack.
Nice one... My great uncle Sherwood Kelly VC, born in SA. Did the same in WW1. Survived. According to the author of a book called the Bravest Man in The British Army, He could have taken the VC many times. He got all the rest of the significant medals. They were left to me, they now held by the War museum in Jhb and his dress medals are on display at His old school, St Andrews College. GT. The book is a facinating read and account by people who fought long side him and gave him his name, the title of the book. Wish Ballen, would do a run down of him to. His VC was awarded in France, in similar circumstances as this amazing story.
Incredible story. What an incredible film this story would make. Russians seem to built different. So incredibly brave and tough. The Chernobyl incident is another example of this. What an incredible man Vladimir must have been to inspire his men in this horrific situation. Keep up the good work MrBallen.
@@char-4737 Well, there's no point in staying hidden when death is certain. But I don't mean to defame the men on either side that fought in that battle. It just doesn't strike me as something very honorable or clever and I disliked the way it was glorified in the story.
The dead man army is my favorite WW1 story, as gruesome as it is, it is the most motivating and encouraging story to exist in my eyes, even when you're "dead" and dying you push onward till the very end. I wish there was a movie about this event
Great story, but sadly likely exaggerated. I mean, nobody actually survived to tell the tale, aside from Germans and they made them seem pretty cowardly and quick to assume.
@@SorrowAvenue Letters and notes could have been written before the soldiers died. It's not unheard of to find letters/notes to loved ones from fallen soldiers after a war/battle.
There are so many little unknown stories like this from the wars. This has to be by far one of the most badass ones I've heard. I was simply picturing the details and scenes as he was describing. Got goosebumps NGL
And thaaaaaat's when the deeeaaaaad meeeeen come maaaaarchiiiing a-gaaaaiiiiiiin... Osowiec, then and again Attack of the, dead hundred men Facing the, lead once again Osowiec, charging in, die again I am SO happy you covered this story, Mr. Ballen! The defense of Osowiec fortress in WW1 is such an incredible story, and also a testimony of the steeliness of Slavic people (the Russians, in this case). Sabaton, bring the modern day bards that they are, did such a MAGNIFICENT song for this "impossible" moment in history. I can't recommend it enough. Sabaton - "Attack of the Dead Men". It's a heavyy-power metal song with clean lyrics and clean vocals (no death, thrash, or black metal growling/screaming/vocals, all straught-up singing). Radio Tapok actually did a Russian cover, too, with a great music video! Radio Tapok's video titles are bilingual, with the band and song title in English, and usually saying "cover на русском". You can search for it using an English keyboard, so no worries. I'd rather not link either song at risk of being autoflagged as spam by RUclips.
That is so true. I've heard this story a few times but never have i felt such emotions after it was told. MrBallen you have a gift. Please, always use it for good and not evil
Am I wrong? Wasn't this titled something completely different when it was first uploaded. Actually, now that I think of it...aren't all of them like that?
I think the something special Mr Ballen adds to the war stories he tells that sets his stories apart and better from a lot of the rest is due to the fact that he's actually been there in the middle of the war zone which gives him the edge on telling war time stories. It takes a special person to willingly sign up to be shot at while serving their country, so thank you for all you do Mr Ballen!

The Heroics of those men are unbelievable. They were awesome in their ability to hold off and scare off a massive army like that even knowing they were dying. I can understand having nothing to loose so might as well go out fighting. But to do it with the ungodly amount of pain they had to been experiencing. That has to be in the top 3 most badass fighting I've ever heard.
This isn't the origin story of zombies, but it is an amazing story of heroism for sure. The origin of zombie myths is from Greece at first. But the stories of zombies that we know are a voodoo thing, from Haiti. Mumbo, voodoo priests, make a drug from the puffer fish that has the affect of the walking dead.
The story of Vladimir was incredibly moving and brought home to me how one can have immense respect for one’s enemy. I guess that any service person would be a “fool” not to have a certain level of respect for their enemy en mass; but, there are certain individuals out on the field who command an immense level of respect intermingled with any pre-existing antagonism by the manner in which they carry themselves to the very end. Life is a battlefield. Heads and chins up, Everyone. ❤

I knew this story about 30 seconds into your setup. These guys were absolute beasts! As a veteran I can never get enough of hearing about incredible examples of the valor and courage of soldiers, sailors or airmen, regardless of their affiliation. The ones doing the fighting, the boots on the ground, can relate to and respect each other across political lines or even across time. Thank you for bringing these incredible soldiers to light for more people. They absolutely deserve to be remembered! Another fantastic video, good sir! 👍
Damn that’s hands down the best war story I’ve ever heard. I love hearing about human spirit being so powerful that they are able to create legendary moments.
He always tells his stories very well, but with this one, I swear I could imagine myself in that situation as if I were really living in the moment. This story was truly inspiring and yet gruesome at the same time, but in an oddly satisfying way with how Vlad managed to fight back despite he and his troops being on the brink of death the entire time. This has to be the best story he has told so far, and I absolutely loved every minute of it!
@@susanivy3619 because all we know for fact is they scared and killed a bunch of Germans and destroyed the fort the rally speech I highly doubt was said and nobody knows for sure
@@susanivy3619 Cause the real events did went a bit different. This here is a propaganda "version" made up by Russians and their allies at that time. And MrBallen fell for it without factchecking. The fortess was taken by the Germans days later and turned into a prison. There are several well documented accounts from for example the civilians living nearby that were affected by the gas too. The real Wladimir died from the gas poisoning in the evening of the event, no bajonett wounds included.
I had to pick up my jaw after hearing you impeccably tell this detailed story. My great grandfather was a WWI vet. I wish I had been able to speak with him. He commemorated in the museum of my hometown. The amazing bravery of the Russians to rally up while in insurmountable pain is indeed a tale of horror and inspiration! Thank you for the wonderful stories of the strange, dark and mysterious history Mr Ballen!
I'm re-listening to this story and it gave me the goosebumps again. Salute to Vladimir and the other soldiers. Salute also to Mr. Ballen for his philanthrophy and trying to help the needy.
Anyone else remember when Mr. Ballen would say he uploads 4-5-6 times a week? Love you John, thank you for the effort you put into giving us these stories. I pray you and your family are well.
Yeah but let's be honest, he has pretty much exhausted the type content that he is really passionate about in his first year. There are a limited number of good paranormal/horror stories to be told, and he really hit ran through them quickly early on. His channel has since shifted from "strange dark and mysterious" to being almost entirely stories about true crime and heroic feats. He also has other projects like his podcast and charitable organization taking a big chunk of his time now. This combined with changing life priorities means he can afford to coast on the year of grinding he did on the platform with one upload per week now. And I don't mean this as a criticism or anything, he absolutely deserves to take it easy if he wants!
It’s not just the story, it’s how the story’s told, and this story was told incredibly well! I had so much fun listening and I can that tell Mr. Ballen had a great time telling it too. Awesome job with the Mr. Ballen foundation! This community is truly making positive changes in the world!

@@BushMaster420circle J Allen was taken so he used his middle initial. He meant for his channel to be Mr B. Allen, but fans read it as Mr. Ballin’. Are you giving a prize for the right answer?
Yay!!! A follow up for Dave!!!! I am so so so happy for him and our community. Let’s keep it going Ballen squad! EDIT: rather than make a separate comment, the story told was incredible and Vlad’s sentiment of “we are all going to die, but this moment will define us” still lives on.
I wonder how they know he said that nobody lived to tell that part of the story some Germans lived to tell the story of the attack but the Russians just made the shit up about what was said and done inside the fort except the fact they destroyed it and died after scaring and killing a bunch of Germans
You do realise that this story is more than likely complete and utter bullshit, right? The Russians had a nack for making up stories like this during this time period. It was usually do to the fact that moral was so low among the soldiers that none of them wanted to fight anymore. Too many were dying and on the Russian front they were actually losing very badly. They kept sending hundreds of thousands of troops westward only to have the vast majority of die and not come back. So stories like this kept getting fabricated to try and get more soldiers out to the field because many were just giving up. Not to mention the fact that they were starting to hate the monarchy that they were fighting for. They thought the Tzar was a British puppet and his wife a lunatic do to her close relationship with Gregory Rasputin. Plus she herself was of the German aristocracy so they saw this whole war as nothing but a family feud. And their moral was also low because the country's future was in question do to the heir to the thrown having a degenerative blood disease, and Marxist Bolshevism was on the rise as well. So Russia was in complete turmoil during WW1. Stories like this were a dime a dozen. It's more likely that the Germans took the fort easily but it was in ruins do to the bombardment. The type of artillery being used at the time was still new in war. So the Germans probably over did it and destroyed the fort themselves and the Russians more than likely made up this last stand Zombie Alamo story to boost moral among the remaining soldiers and also boost nationalistic unity during a time of great division among the Russian people.... I've found no proof to show me otherwise when I try to look up the validity of this story. And I normally love Mr. Ballen stories but this one I'd take with a very large grain of salt.
John you are a great story teller, your fans all know this however, I believe that this may be your best. The passion and animation that you express during this story was not only with you voice but your body language too, just fantastic. Very well done!
My daughters boyfriend is Russian. He was orphaned at 3, along with his younger sister. He's had a rough life, and hasn't had much to be proud about. As soon as I heard this story, I immediately played it for him, knowing he would love it! He can now tell people this story and be proud of his Russian heritage! And Mr. Ballen now has a new subscriber because he loves how he tells stories! Yeah! 👊
@kimmordang1067 Right, life was/is hard there. His adoptive family (here in the USA) didn't treat him very good either. He never felt loved, and he started getting into fights and doing/dealing drugs, and ended up in prison. Of all the girls he'd been with, nobody attempted to give him a chance and see if he could change his ways, until he met my daughter. She got him out of the city and brought him to our home in the country. He quit doing drugs, quit dealing, and even got a job, which he never had before. Now they are going to have a baby, and soon they'll have a new car and a new place to live with their little, happy family. His adoptive parents have seen the change in him, and are even going to give them money for a down payment on their house! He now feels love from his parents, and is a good man. He will now have a good life
That is kind of a hateful thing to say about his adoptive parents. I have doubts that you know the full story. It sounds like there might be more to it. Let's hope your daughter isn't so judgemental.
@crystalh450 she's actually not far off. Most Russians grow up in an abusive household, because standards for war are still present. It's not like Americans, where freedom is this idealism you can cling to. Most old Russians that immigrate to the US never learn English because of Cold War sentiment. Think about that.

While round us bark the mad and hungry dogs,
Making their mock at our accursèd lot.
If we must die, O let us nobly die,
So that our precious blood may not be shed
In vain; then even the monsters we defy
Shall be constrained to honor us though dead!
O kinsmen! we must meet the common foe!
Though far outnumbered let us show us brave,
And for their thousand blows deal one death-blow!
What though before us lies the open grave?
Like men we’ll face the murderous, cowardly pack,
Pressed to the wall, dying, but fighting back!

Yeah but the man has a life outside of RUclips. There’s also only so much content he can use.
Why.
It’s not just the story, it’s how the story’s told, and this story was told incredibly well! I had so much fun listening and I can that tell Mr. Ballen had a great time telling it too. Awesome job with the Mr. Ballen foundation! This community is truly making positive changes in the world!
I cant agree more
I just left a comment about him doing a playlist of war stories like this. He seems to really enjoy them! Watch the one "A brutal end to their horrific scheme". His joy in nabbing the bad guys was awesome!!!
This story brought me to tears - those guys have my respect. May their souls rest easy
I’m so freaking proud of Mr Ballen for creating a charitable foundation 🙏🏻 been here since the start, and we ain’t going NOWHERE!!!
whose this we? lol!!! also if you been here from the start, then what was the OG Mr Ballens name mean? :P
@@BushMaster420circle now that sounded very German lol

There is always a Dave in a story

@@jdhill9184 hate all you want 👍 does not hinder the good impact that we are making in other peoples lives
Mad Respect to the soldiers. What a way to go out.
“If I’m going down, I’m taking you with me…to HELL!”
Yeah! 👊
That is so sweet! My husband is Russian, and they did not have an easy life over there. I hope he now feels loved an at home❤
He will now have a good life
You're an awesome mom. 👌
What an amazing transformation for Mr Ballen. I remember seeing his videos when he was under a million subscribers. Now he has his own foundation and helping people across the world.
It couldn't of happened to a more kind and deserving person. Mr Ballen is one of the few people that if I met in person I would probably gush a bit lol
Have a blessed day everyone (:
Ikr. I took a screenshot of one of my comments he liked. 🤣🤣🤣 He's just such a good guy! I found him at just over a million and have been hooked ever since. 😃
Very well said! I get chills listening to John. Honestly, he's the best in the biz and you're so correct the game, good luck, pod cast and other good things that have happened could not have happened to a more kind hearted, deserving person.
John B. Allen, I'm sure you're familiar with this warrior spirit.
God bless you and thank YOU for your service.☝️✨🇺🇲
this is particularly poignant to me because while it's nice to share that Mr B makes someone happy, MANY people focus on what he does for *them*... thanks for taking time to appreciate this man without making it about you
I saw Mr Ballen at an airport once and when my young daughter asked for a photo he shoved her into a load of tables by the food court. He then flipped the bird and said ‘Take a picture of that you fucking asshole’
(This didn’t really happen obviously)

Wow. What an incredible feat by those soldiers, I can't imagine the intense pain they must have been in, it doesn't bear thinking about. Truly inspiring.
not just that, but quite a lot of them survived and retreated, he made a mistake telling that all of them died, that was not the case, all of them got wounded in action due to the gas, but they lived to tell the story
I knew exactly which story you were gonna tell and I never been more excited to hear it being told! Thank you, Mr. Ballen.
