My grandfather owned several businesses, one of which was a sawmill. My mom was a depression era child and she remembers her father building coffins for people in their community who could not afford one from a traditional funeral home. My grandmother would make the lining for the interior of the coffin.
They are great to sleep in in colder climates , you make them a bit bigger wider , and put vent holes in them , god I miss mine , very soundproof , best nights sleep ever , oh you make the side drop as well as the lid lift , wonderful job by the way ..
great show back in 2004 on frontline called "A family undertaking" about the home funeral movement, people making their own caskets, really great documentary. thanks
I’m getting ready to build mine I’ll use red cedar & blue spruce, for the hardware I know a blacksmith that would have a good time making it. It’s going to be fun. Thank you Sir.
I hope you do. We would love to see it. Lets hope we don't have to build a coffin like yours, yet! LOL We have thought that we might should think of building them. Always in the back of our mind. Thanks

Dream project. Something built to last our life. Should be any truly Green voter's compulsory aspiration, a true legacy to make this world a better place that we leave behind. Always that perpetual challenge of keeping up with the Joneses. I hear the neighbour is planning to out do us with a cardboard coffin, even cheaper and even greener. Hope we can all live through that.
I'm starting gathering my wood and supplies to make my own casket. Enjoyed the details and simplicity. Thanks I would be proud to go to rest in his coffin.
@@homesteadhandyman4481 We are starting our caskets next month. where do we purchase the hardware for closing? We enjoyed your humor and instructions Thanks so much
Job well done. Is this casket built for you or a family memeber or for sale or just a "to do" project? My best friend built a casket for his dad several years ago out of aspen. I got to help him with the apholstry & finishing details when i came home from one of my trucking runs. It was stained & polyurethaned & turned out very nicely. RIP Pops!!!
Had a laugh at the outtake. Sure easy enough in todays world to end up in one, but a little harder to get out! Nice job. Was wondering if the handles were just bolted through the boards or maybe they don’t need to be reinforced? I’m no heavy weight but would like to make my own. Subscribed. Thanks.
I just bought two burial plots for me and my wife today and I do Cabinetry work and I ask the funeral director can I build my own coffin he said sure if you got enough time so figure I better get get started them and build them cuz he knows I might die tomorrow
very nice Craftsmanship , do you buy kits or. Individual parts for all the Hardware needed? I’m a retired Professional Woodworker and I actually have a very large Extended Family and Networknof Freinds I’ve been thinking about building Several And give them away as gifts for Families to save on the expenses of the Funeral Costs that are IMO Outrageous
I live in a van and these days there are a lot of people living in their cars, for those living in this condition the most difficult situation is the hot weather. Isolated a van or car is costly, I have an idea to build a box bed isolated that I can sleep cool during the nights. Do you have any ideas to share that might work like a casket but only for living people?, ha ha ha!
i still want one of these to sleep . im not a fan of my bed taking up space , something with a few inches of bedding that i can put a sheet on and take off to clean with enough room to roll on my side
Why not use 3/4" sheathing? It would be less work & would look okay and just as serviceable. The thing is going into the ground or into a blast furnace anyways. I suppose its 'tradition.'
Thanks. I had some cedar cut and asked for 3/4 but I think it is not much more than a half inch thick. My mother-in-law asked me to build her casket and I was wondering if 1/2" to 5/8" would be to thin. I plan on adding panels anyway.
guessur ready for the thing cause you dont give a damn bout a mask while ur burnin that thing! lol jk. hey it turned out boss! I dont know why this showed up in my recomended but I do love woodworking so thats prob it. peace man. :)
I'm guessing most people are here because they searched DIY coffins, or something similar. Simple but beautifully done.

Beautiful casket. Something I always wanted to build for myself but my family got mad at me for wanting to do that.
I'm 22 and im pretty sure I'll be building my own casket pretty soon it's not a bad idea why get robbed for something you can make yourself
LOL. My mother got mad too good to know im not the only one ill go ahead and do it anyway.
We made my grandma's. It can be a good way to help with the grieving. Plus you can customize it with woodburning and carving.
fcuk them,,i came across this site for building my own..sweet job..i like it alot.
I’m almost 40. I will still hold my own and save it for whenever. Why pay thousands for something that only cost 200 to build
Awesome vid. I love the burnt wood exterior. I plan to go with the traditional diamond shape but, I really like your design.
Good job
Great job brother! Something tells me crafting pine coffins will become a necessary trade in the days ahead!
I have a woodshop and thought we should build affordable pine coffins with burnt finish! Voila!
Yeah covid has killed a lot of people 😢.

Hello I love this coffin. Do you have a list of all materials and items used as well as a blueprint for the coffin ?
I need an xtra large casket. My brother has asked me to make him a pine box casket. My sister is lining it with a Pendleton blanket.
Nice size for a big man . "Plugs" will fit perfectly
Nice work !!
Thank you! Cheers!
Awesome
I built one for my ex but skipped the wood burn finish; that will happen anyway where she will end up.

your going to have her baked eh? well done i'm assuming..

@@christydog1 you can get them from rockler or do a search online for casket hardware.
I work with my firearm too. Carry on sir.
Looks nice with the finish. As for me, I'd prefer a stained finish and collapsible handles.
Came out nice , do you have a link , or preference to hardware ?and/or do you have plans you reccomend
Nice! I wish there was more to see on the liner and how you slopped the bottom though.

Do you remember what the total cost for materials was ?
I have a reason for my question.
Thanks
How do you support the bottom so that it supports the weight of the person without them falling out?
can you custom make one for a short guy, 5"7? and how much would it cost?
Do you have a full video and dimensions?
How many pounds can this hold. What specifications would be needed for 450 pounds.

How much for one coffin I’m gonna need one ASAP my friend
My aunt wants me to build her one but she wants it really simple but I want to do a really nice one
You can do a nice simple one 😉
how strong are the handles whats keeps them in place and not breaking off

when are ye gona test it.
I haven't seen that burned pine since the guys used to sell the welcome signs for people's houses at the flea market in the 70's.
What's wrong with using plywood? 4x8 plywood? It must be easier to use individual boards. I'm using a 4X8 boards.

Do you sell them to local Funeral homes?
Why is there a handle on the inside???!?
I just heard that one needs a leak-proof barrier inside in some states. :-(
Some cemeteries require a concrete vault to keep the grave from sinking in. Check with your local cemeteries.
How many hours of work, sir?
About 2 1/2 days. Never really timed it.
Now your family saves money on a $12,000 coffin that you made yourself

Caskets cost thousands of dollars. Such a ripoff. Better to build your own for a couple hundred dollars
