- Fire Test between Fort Knox Defender series and a Big Box Retailers' Safe in an actual total burn down of a building. Temps over 2000 Degrees and Safes were in the Fire for 2.5 Hours. No Water until they were removed.

This test was at the Mower County Fairgrounds on Feb. 2, 2013. 9 Fire Departments were there with over 40 Firefighters. The Grand Stand area was deemed unsafe and needed to be demolished. What a better way than to burn it to the ground. The safes were in the fire for 2.5 Hours! NO water was used on the safes until AFTER they were out of the fire. Hi Mark. absolutely it is fair to compare the 2. most safes purchased at a big box retailer will be a 60 min fire rated safe. you got to see what happens to a safe with that rating and why a 90 min safe is much better. thats why I did the fire test, to show the difference and why Fort Knox is superior in every way.

Awesome video. But really about competition take a Fort Knox safe, liberty safe, cannon safe and any other high price anerican made safe and do a test!!!!!

You foot the bill for the other safes and I'll do it! In all honesty though, the safe we used is the same stuff you'd find in a big box retailer. I cannot disclose the name though due to legal issues.
liberty and cannon are big box safes. they would never hold up against a ft knox.

Liberty has different lines of safes. Their imports wouldn't hold up (ie Canon and Stack On), but the actual Liberty line made in Salt Lake would would handle this test with flying colors.

Cannon and Stack On aren't made by Liberty and Cannon is US made. I have seen and dealt with many Liberty safes after fires. The only Liberty that would even have had a chance in holding up in this fire is a Presidential and it would have been a small chance. In a lesser fire a Liberty may have done fine, but nothing compared to a Fort Knox. I'm not taking anything away from Liberty or even Stack on. There is a safe for everyone, depending on their needs/wants. If you want REAL security, and REAL fire protection, then Fort Knox. Fort Knox is not the end all, be all of safes. It's just the safe I trust with my valuables, because I know it will stand up. I KNOW it, and because of the video, everyone else knows it too. Doesn't mean everyone buys one. It's what YOU want...
sellerslockandkey Don't forget to tell them about the no BS limited lifetime guarantee to the original purchaser. Now this means that if you sell your safe then the warranty is then void BUT if you outlive your safe and it goes to a family member like a son, daughter or your wife then the warranty is still good and all you need to do is call the factory and have them transfer the names in their system. Which is why my big ole 7241 Protector safe will be in my family for decades to come. I know it will outlast the sands of time! Also, if your safe is ever broken into or even an attempt of unlawful entry and damaged in the process Fort Knox will replace your safe FREE OF CHARGE. Also if your safe is damaged by incidental fire or flood they will also replace your safe free of charge. One time I even called the Fort Knox head quarters in Utah and they told me about a story where a guy had his Fort Knox safe for something like 15 years. His house caught fire and the safe was damaged but when he sent his safe back to have it replaced they didn't make his safe model anymore. Since he bought his safe there had been significant upgrades to their basic design so ultimately he was given a better more upgraded safe than the one he had. That's the professionalism of Fort Knox safes and why I'll buy and recommend them for the rest of my life.. I will safe that the only safe that will give it a run for their money in my eyes is Browning.. They have amazing innovations on the inside like recessed doors for scopes and leather interiors.. They also have the same limited lifetime warranty like Fort Knox.. But I love the style of Fort Knox better..

That's where your wrong. Those ratings aren't that accurate. The tests performed to get those ratings are in a controlled burn and a controlled environment. We simulated an uncontrolled fire, which would be the case if your house started on fire. Now, if your house went up, which are you going to choose? Your typical "big box" safe or a Fort Knox?

The Fort Knox was a Defender 6031
I am curious as to what happened to the bale of hay that was on top of the competitors safe. It was on top of the safe when the stocks of the guns were being loaded into it. Then they cut away and show a the safes from a distance, the hay is gone at this point. I’m wondering if they loaded into the competitors safe to ensure the Fort Knox safe would come out.
The bale of hay was used by one of the fire departments in the next room during training exercises. Nothing was added to the safes that wasn't seen on camera. Everything is as accurate and raw as I could make it.
Defender and Protector Series safes are basically the same thing. The only real difference is that Defenders come in textured colors standard and Protectors come in a high gloss automotive paint standard. Otherwise, they're the same safe.
Right around the 2k mark depending on the size.

Great test and it shows a lot about the Fort Knox but having an unidentified 'big box' safe is worthless information. At least ID the brand or make it more useful by throwing a Liberty into the mix. As it it's not a helpful video comparison.
Prices all depend on the options you want.
I'd take anything Defender series and up from Fort Knox over ANY "big box" safe any day of the week in any scenario. I work on safes all day long for every manufacturer out there so I know what's good and what's not. If you want to just keep kids out, then "big box" is fine. If you want true protection, then buy a Fort Knox.
Any reason that there was a hay bail placed on top of the “big box” safe and not the Fort Knox?? I’m also guessing it had some accelerant added to get the fire to start up? Seems like an important variable...
Elevated69State the hay was removed before the fire was started. They were using the hay in the next room prior to the fire to smoke out that room while practicing finding victims in a smoke filled room. Good observation though! There were no shady practices taking place to make one safe look better than the other.

No, none whatsoever. Just a standard configuration Defender 6031.
Thoughts on Liberty Safes vs Fort Knox? Looking into getting a "custom" safe between the two, likely 14 long guns, with door hanging nets.
Liberty's website allows for more interior customization, but Fort Knox's website shows the protection upgrades, with Fort Knox I will be taking the Deluxe Package and the Safe Body Upgrade as non-negotiable upgrades. I am looking for a safe that will last me a life time, and be a fully manual lock system as the electronic locks are a security concern to me.
I prefer Fort Knox obviously, but every safe has a purpose. Fort Knox are HIGHLY customizable and can grow with you as your collection grows. All you have to do is contact a dealer and order a different shelving config. So a 14 gun now could be up to say, a 48 gun later on in life. If you're looking for a safe to last just your lifetime, don't buy a Fort Knox though...Because a Fort Knox will last your lifetime, your kids lifetime and their kids lifetime! Not all Fort Knox safes are built equal. Not all "big box" safes are built equal. That isn't a fair question. Would you really choose ANY Fort Knox over ANY "big box"?

How much does this safe sell for?
If you stock guns inside in the safe wouldn't you also be stocking ammo inside the safe? Do you know if ammo would do damage inside the safe at that temperature? Just curious because I haven't seen a test with ammo inside...
We were not able to put ammo inside due to safety but ammo has a higher cook temperature than paper. The paper did not burn, therefore the ammo shouldn't fire off either.

I would love to test every safe out there if I could. A real test like we did here. Not a manufacturer test in a big oven. If you supply the safe, I'll burn it and show the results!

Instead of just saying competitors safe, they should actually say the brand and model so we know it is a fair comparison of safes in the same price and stated rating range. Otherwise, anyone can pick something to compare against knowing theirs is going to win. How about being transparent.
Clint Appling Hey Clint! I would say the manufacturer if you’re willing to foot the bill for the lawyers when I get sued for showing how their safe faired in an actual fire. 😂. Like I say in the video, this is a typical big box safe with a 1 hour at 1200 degree fire rating. Most of them, regardless of the manufacturer are going to fair as well as this one did. They’re not worth the money. It’s better to invest in something that will last like a Fort Knox!
@@sellerslockandkey but that’s the OP’s point. I bet that big box safe was $999 today but the Fort Knox safe in today’s prices is $3500+. No doubting the quality of the Fort Knox and that it’s better than the other safe in this test, but just saying big box store safe versus Fort Knox safe isn’t fair unless you’re spending the same money on a special order safe from the big box store.
All this shows is that the fire ratings are accurate for different safes. I'm betting you wouldn't find it fair if a test was done with a "big box" safe with a higher fire rating and then they showed how much better it was than the Ft. Knox safe.

I'm not saying Fort Knox isn't a good safe, i personally have one and think it's the best safe i've ever owned, but tests like this can be staged easily, especilly if they are made by the people who make or sell them, personally i like a neutral stance on tests like this,

I can assure you this was not a staged fire in any way. Everything is as it was filmed. I had no clue what the outcome would be, nor did anyone else. It was all a gamble to see if they would hold up or not. I do work for about every safe manufacturer out there so I've seen good and bad in everything. I'm as neutral as they get. I sell Fort Knox, because they're the best.
Thats why I would love to know the other brand of the safe they tested to see if they really compared.

understandable, I give the same advice to stay away from all cheap big box store safes.
We actually just started to carry another line of safes in addition to Fort Knox. They are very well built, still better than a big box store safe, but not as nice or strong as a Fort Knox. They are considerably cheaper though. If you're interested, email me.
That "leading brand" was an obvious cheap big box store safe. This is apples and oranges. You are trying to compare a Mercedes to a Kia.
If you watch the video I plainly state that the competitor's safe is a 1200 degree for 60 min fire rated safe, which is your average rating on a big box retail safe. I never stated this was an apples to apples comparison. If you want to spend $1200 on a big box safe, this is what you'll get. If you buy a Fort Knox, you'll be getting something far superior. No smoke and mirrors, just plain facts.
I'm not going to buy a big box store safe. But am more interested in the mid line safes that some of these dealers sell, such at Liberty, Champion, etc. As much as I'd like to buy a Ft Knox, some just don't have $5,000 for a safe, but can swing $2,500~
Keep in mind, not all Fort Knox are 5K. The 2014 price on the Defender in the video is $2500.

Ageed, yet for the options I need for my home I am still looking upwards of 3 grand plus. I love my liberty safe but there is not a lot of people who can afford the ones they need. So that is why I was asking the other big box safe name. It be nice to help others out to avoid those safes.

Love this video. This is why I have chosen Fort Knox two times for my gun safes. Because the number one thing that concerns me, and for protection of my precious firearms, is adequate fire protection. Burglary is number two for my concerns and at least in my area the average burglar is simply not going to come prepared to break into a safe, and therefore my valuables are most certainly safe from theft by the stupid, lazy ass, worthless human that would choose to burglarize my residence. Now if I was a rich fella, I would build a house big enough to encorporate a concrete and steel reinforced walk in vault so that there was certainly adequate room for my collection of bazookas, my collection of Ma Dueces, and my flame throwers and grenade launchers. HEY........ a guy can't be " too " prepared !
