  • A few years back I took a crack at repainting a Rubies Boba Fett helmet as a custom Mandalorian. Surely I've learned some new tricks since then, says I, so why not try something new? And that's just what I did!
    EDIT: I've been calling it Hasbro this whole time but apparently it's a Rubies, as seen at
    www.rubies.com...
    Apologies all around!

    Take my like literally for the voice over work, and calling your helmet your "lid." And the music too.

    Nice as the Black Series helmets are, I still prefer these Rubies for custom buckets.

    I use patroleum jelly for the layered damage. It wipes off easier and if you remove the last layer while it's still slightly tacky, it gives it a more dirty and weathered look. I have images on my community tab. I used the same Rubies helmet.

    • @daveofalltrades805

      I replaced the clear visor altogether. You can break the original apart and file/sand down the edges until they're flush and smooth. Then you take a face shield replacement like the "Sellstrom Replacement Window for 390 Series Safety Face Shields, Uncoated Acetate, Dark Green Tint" on Amazon and cut it down to the T shape. I used some paper to trace a template and slowly removed more and more of the new visor until it fits. I used screws to attach mine but other people have different methods. Over at Galactic Armory channel (which is an amazing resource if you haven't been) I think he uses glues and an adhesive putty like QuikSteel.

      Thanks! I haven’t but I can see how that would be handy if you were going to troop in the helmet. They’re not as rigid as the black series version for sure.

    Love the vidz. I don't get the hate for Rubies lids from some. I got a few fairly cheap and the main thing for me is they fit my head ! Sure Black Series looks great but what if it's too small ?

      @daveofalltrades805  3 года назад +1

      Thanks! And I agree. Any mass market product is gonna have aspects you don’t like, and some qualities that you do. Did you see in the Mando season 2 behind the scenes, Robert Rodriguez has the Rubies on one of his boys - for his previs of the Boba Fett beast-mode sequence. How cool is that

    Really want to do this for myself but can't seem to source one in the UK shipping is roughly the cost of the helmet from Rubies. Any ideas on where I can get a similar quality bucket for around the same price £60?

    • @daveofalltrades805
      @daveofalltrades805  3 года назад

      Hmm. You’re right, it’s scarce over there! I don’t see anything great for Boba style but if you look on Amazon for “hard Mandalorian helmet” there’s one with good reviews. I don’t have one and so haven’t tried any modifications out on it, but it’s the only thing I see in that range. Otherwise the Black Series Prototype Boba is more expensive but a great looking lid. www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B08G1J7TBW/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_awdb_imm_t1_8fAXFb0YC4BNZ

    What did you use to fill in the range finder and the dents

    • @falcoman99
      @falcoman99 3 года назад +1

      Most likely bondo also referee to as auto filler

    • @daveofalltrades805
      @daveofalltrades805  3 года назад

      Bondo seems to be the filler of choice by most other makers I’ve seen - but I had some Plastic Wood wood filler on hand so I used that. For the range finder I jammed some shreds of paper in the cavity so I wouldn’t need to fill the entire thing with the wood filler.

    • @daveofalltrades805

      It’s tough to say exactly with pads and what not, but forcing a tape under them, just over the visor/brim, I measured 27”. It’s gonna be close. Plus you gotta watch out for your nose hitting the visor

    • @daveofalltrades805
      @daveofalltrades805  3 года назад

      There’s clips hidden under the ear caps. It can be a little fiddly but if you get a lever under the edge and wiggle around you should be able to locate them. Once you know where they’re at you kind of grit your teeth and hope they don’t snap. If you snap them you can try to repair them or just bypass and glue the ears back in when you’re ready.

      @@daveofalltrades805 Could you reduce the helmet size. Mine I bought from ebay is too big. I could remove .5 inches from each side might look better. my shoulders are 17 inch across and the helmet is 10 inch. I heard the helmet should be half the size of shoulders. How would you recommend to tackle this and glue it back.

    • @daveofalltrades805
      @daveofalltrades805  3 года назад +1

      @@frederickamartinez I would think on the back, on either side of the vent. Half an inch out on each side, cut out a triangle up to where the vent meets the brim. Then compress the whole thing with some string or a belt and superglue it a lot. Or i suppose you could pad out your shoulder pauldrons a little to increase that size. Seems easier
