- In today's vlog I talk about the new TRETINOIN WITH BENZOYL PEROXIDE topical that was approved by the FDA in July 2021 for acne. Tretinoin cannot be used alongside benzoyl peroxide, but this new topical uses microencapsulation to combine the two ingredients in one topical formula to treat acne. I agree about attaining a goal. When I ask my students to set a goal, invariably some will say, “get an A in science.” I always tell them to set realistic goals on the steps to make that possible: come in for regular extra help, ask questions during class, get all assignments done on time, etc. My own goal is to stay organized. I just Marie Kondo’d my closet and a few drawers, again. 😎
I was an only child and had no choice but to learn to cook for myself, though I also loved cooking, but often we didn't have the means to always cook 'healthy'. So a lot of my meals were the pre-made things. I had to learn on my own what was a better meal and didn't fully start to do that until I was a teen. Sad but grateful for it really. I still felt sad whenever friends and people seemed lost on how to even boil water to make pasta. I wish I grew up eating more good foods over some things lol.
I was no way destitute as a kid but because my mom was often sickly I had to learn to so the dishes and make simple foods on my own. I am not good at it but I'd always resort to weird vegetable soup and rice or curry and rice. Wasn't bad and it prepared me for dorm life where I had to cook and clean for myself. I am still not the best cook in our dorm but I still manage
I had to learn how to cook too! Obviously some guidance and techniques would’ve been nice. But I’m glad I didn’t have a pantry full of ultra processed junk to rely on.
I love watching the old TV shows, because they're familiar, the characters are familiar. Things are changing so fast these days, I need anchors in my life. I like to think that some things will stay the same, but they don't. You mentioning old TV shows made me very happy, Dr. Dray. Thank you. Dr Dray, can you do a video about cutaneous drug reactions? I was diagnosed with acute generalized exanthematous pustulosis which they told me is probably a reaction to antibiotics but I haven’t taken an antibiotic since childhood. It’s nearly impossible to keep my skin hydrated now. I can’t find much information about it and was sent two doctors before being diagnosed.
Re: forgetting your wallet. One of the many reasons I absolutely love my Apple Watch is that I always have my wallet with me. I do not feel that it is heavy or noticeable throughout my day. I was a non-watch-wearing person for 20yrs and was worried I’d be bothered by something on my wrist. But I adore this well-integrated device! I can instantly do many things without pulling my phone out. And with mask wear, I can unlock the phone just by having my watch on. 💜
Some schools still have home ec! My niece learned some mad cooking skills in her high school home ec classes. They made crepes on week one 😮 She’s in college now and makes some impressive and healthy meals. A great life skill 🤓

It is so strange to see stores sell such 'disposable' random stuff, so excessive and wasteful...I don't understand it at all. I prefer to be mindful and be a conscious consumer, invest in something that will last for years and serve a purpose... I hope people stop and ask themselves if they really need it. We live in a culture of more, more, more, and instant gratification...it is so sad.

It’s soo weird that you’ve mentioned Step by step show!! I can’t believe the coincidence, I am a subtitler, and last week I was assigned a few episodes of that show and it took me back to my childhood years. It was strange to get such an old show but it was sooo fun getting back those memories ❤️

Dr, I'm wondering if you could answer a question... do the active ingredients in skincare keep working for the duration that they are on the skin, until they are washed off? For example, if I use a retinoid at night but don't wash my face in the morning will that retinoid continue to work until I wash my face the next night? Or does it have a specific amount of time that it remains active but then stops working? Thanks!
Some who cant tolerate tretinoin the first time are adviced to treat them as a mask that they wash off. So they would put tretinoin in their face, leave it on for a while - say 10 to 30 minutes then wash it off and it still does what its supposed to do until one can tolerate it better.
Another example is with Topical Minoxidil. A study showed that it is ideal to leave the active for 8 to 12 hours on your scalp without washing for the best contact absorption. But for those who are irritated or had to wash the active off due to other reasons are advised to leave the minoxidil on for ATLEAST 4 hours in their scalp or face for about 75% absorption of the active - as tested - for it to be better* effective for hair growth / regrowth.
Idk about other ingredients but Retinoids will get deactivated by UV lights.

Does putting on setting spray after applying sunscreen help the sunscreen “last longer” before having to reapply?

Not necessarily but if you are using a setting spray, make sure it's a SPF setting spray. Dr Alexis Stephens and Lab Muffin have recommended them in their videos on reapplying sunscreen over makeup.

Setting doable goals is really important. An example I like to use is me starting to wear sunscreen. I struggled to remember or find a suitable sunscreen but I just tried. Sometimes I applied sunscreen literally before going out the horror but I still applied it and how I remember to do it 15~30minutes and find it less of a hassle because it's somewhat of a habit now. Another is exercising. I am very lazy and I hate having to sit up and down for different exericse poses in a routine so I dug into RUclips and found exercise routines that I could just do while sitting and just did that and it has been the most stress free and consistent workout schedule I have ever had.

I've worked at a elementary school for 21 years. A few years ago, we had an assembly about healthy foods and where foods come from. It was astounding how many of even the older kids had no idea that French fries and potato chips were from potatoes or what a whole potato looked like. Almost none of them could identify a tomato or pear! Forget things like squash. So not only are these kids growing up without skills they don't know the basics of what is what with fresh foods.

I’m glad you approve of the Aqua rich sunscreen, it’s my current favorite. I use the gold bottle (and the white one), so I am hoping they also get your approval. I’ve struggled to find one I enjoy since I can’t find the Shiseido one that seems to be discontinued.

I love benzoyl peroxide so I’m interested in this 🧐 and kids/teens and even young adults most defiantly don’t know how to cook for themselves. Its quite rare it seems. It’s a problem. Learning to cook should be mandatory in school!

Terri Hatcher is the actress along side Dean Cain. That was such a nostalgic time of tv for me. We are the same age, Dr. Dray. I think the couple in Step by Step were affectionate because they were a newer love; blended family. The idea of long lasting love wasn’t appealing on TV, rather the idea of “you again” got the laughs which is sad.

😅 can adapalene still degrade in the presence of BP if used in 2 separate products (not epiduo)? Not that I’ve done this 👀 😞 haha
That's what she and other derms have said (I know Dr Alexis Stephens has said that in her ingredients not to mix video and Dr Dray has a video like that as well).
Adapelene is a retinol that is stable in the presence of benzoyl peroxide (wash or leave-on products), so its unlikely to degrade. I have persinally used a BP wash with adapelene as recommended by a derm. However, BP and retinol can be extra irritating so its best to start with lower strength or BP wash. Do not use BP with other forms of retinols/ antioxidants/vitamin Cs as it can oxidize the actives. Best of luck👍🏽
Based on my experience I would recommend a combo of Adapalene and Benzoyl Peroxide that’s the one friends

Is it OK to use CeraVe cleanser that has 4% benzoyl peroxide if I use tretinoin every night? It is probably better than the cleanser I used to use, which had 10%. But it's possible that a cleanser that has any benzoyl peroxide is harmful to tretinoin users. I don't know.
Topic request: I currently use topicals to help with hyperpigmentation. I am wondering what supplement ingredients I can take to help my skin from the inside that are evidence-based. This would be helpful for so many! Thanks!!!!
