Thanks for watching. Keep a positive objective mindset when viewing content that opposes views that you don't agree with. That's what separates but also joins us in this world. @@icantbelieveya @Antoine Perkins IT'S ME-RI-DA. Both my parents were born there and my whole family is from there. Merida is one of the most safest, most beautiful and welcoming city in all of Mexico. The people there are of Mayan descent and are super humble and embracing. 48 hours is definitely not enough time to come up with such a conclusion. It actually makes me sad that you feel like that. It's one of the most magical and mystical cities if you researched it. Amazing culture and history. And it's sad that the ex pats are ruining the city's reputation. One of my cousins who lives there told me about the ban, but it's because of Covid. People were getting publicly drunk and being irresponsible so they banned drinking. You have no idea how lucky you are to be in the region. Youre just not with the right people. If you knew the beautiful places that are just hours away from you, you would be amazed. I've never ever heard anyone describe the Yucatan this way. Ever.

Perhaps you care to explain the history of the abandoned plantations scattered all over the region? Maybe even the Nazi magazine I spotted in the OXXO store next to the crossword puzzles and childrens coloring books? That's a whole nother video, video, clearly. Covid has been a damper, but it not an excuse for everything. Just not feeling the place. This is just one video... out thousands. Cheers

You say you are visiting this place from a practical standpoint, but what does that mean? Learning the language, and not “Americanizing” words would definitely open you up to better engagement with locals.
As a person who lives in Japan, I don’t like engaging with most American tourists (unless they need help) because they seem to want to nothing more than to find something “American”. Whether that’s fast food, English language, something stereotypically Japanese, etc, it’s super closed minded and annoying.

I wanted to visit Merida just to get my own perspective but the drive was about 3 hours. I couldn't fit it into my itinerary. It's grown so much in popularity I wanted to see if the hype was real. Lol. I moved to Merida and love it. Lived in Denver, Colorado for 37 years. I love this city! But, I speak Spanish like a native, am Latina in culture, run around socializing with Mexicans, and get involved with others here. Everyone here does small business. I don't like California. People are moving out en masse out of that state. Probably because of the homeless issues in Los Angeles and the high cost of living. I have traveled for about 40 years over many states. Each has its charm. Merida is influenced by Mayans. The Mayans are not really into trusting foreigners. Why? The history of the place. But once they know you are interested in their culture, life and traditions? Very sweet people. Stay in LA. I think everyone should have the right to live in the place they most feel comfortable in. The Cold in Colorado is not for me. It never was. I prefer the heat and the coast and the old colonial style of the buildings downtown. I love the people above all else. To each their own eh?

I had to constantly use Google translate and Google lens. And there is the Gringo Tax for sure. I think a lot over Black people definitely over hyped the place. If I decide to move I'm sure it won't be there. Its like the Black expats there, especially the women, want to keep their little group private. Which is cool. So, lots to unpack - but first - need context - are there scouting the place out? Are you living there? Are you visiting? That would help me understand your POV better. Next, I'm someone who lived in Germany for over 3 years, and the one thing I've learned about languages is this, just like you and me, a non-native english speaker is hesitant to use english out of fear of doing it incorrectly, or they just don't know it. However, the expectation that english be used is confusing to me, you are in a spanish-speaking country, I think it's unrealistic to expect english anywhere beyond a hotel checkin or airport. And I get it, this can add up to a bad experience. Complaints about heat and mosquitos will get you nowhere with me, I lived in south Florida for 15+ years. And unable to drink, yes, that's a restriction put in place by the local government during a pandemic to minimize gatherings, no issue for me there - I happened to be in Costa Rica once during their Presidential election, no alcohol served for 3 days prior and 5 days after the election. Every place is different, and it's on the visitor to adapt as much as is reasonable. And even with all that, yeah, a place can still be 'bad', but I don't think matches what I've seen here on YT.

Bear in mind that you went there during a pandemic. People are desperate to make a buck everywhere in the world. That's probably why you thought they saw you as a walking wallet. These are indeed hard times.
For the short time that you spent there, you really can't make a judgement like that about the people not being appreciative. One bad experience is not enough to judge everyone.
When you travel you have to go with an open mind, and a good attitude.

Thank you for your honesty. I have to agree that generally RUclipsrs seem to paint a fairy tale image of Merida and it is misleading. I have been here for over two weeks and it took me one week to recover from the disappointment I was feeling. I had a lot of confidence in my ability to speak Spanish but it quickly dissipated when I realized that their accent and fast speech is challenging to adjust to, and so any Spanish you have is only good for survival. It's not that you expect all the locals to know English. That wouldn't be fair. It's that you expect communication to be less daunting than it turns out to be. Merida has a charm of It's own, and wonderful people but I have to agree that if saving money is your intention for moving here, you might be sorely disappointed. I was hoping to get new glasses but I was told I won't save any money if I try to get an English-speaking optometrist. I thought the opposite would be the case. Without Spanish, you feel like you're more likely to be overcharged. Not all locals are like that but you need to know who you can trust and that is tough to know.

Please don't make a decision about Merida based on one person's opinion. I suggest you visit Merida (and any other city you're considering), and draw your own conclusions.
I just got back to the US after 3 weeks in Mexico. I had originally planned to spend 4 days in Merida, but ended up staying 8 because I liked it. It's not a place I would want to live year-round because of the heat. However, this time of year (February), I did not find the heat at all oppressive.
I am not going to dispute Antoine's perceptions point-by-point because I think the core issue is that Merida simply doesn't resonate with him. It happens. I have traveled extensively over the past 30+ years, and there were cities that others raved about that I could take or leave (Brussels, Vienna, Bangkok, Buenos Aires), and places that others talked trash about that I really enjoyed (Guatemala City, Bratislava, Cairo, Rio de Janeiro). I think most travelers have experienced this.
No matter how much research you do or how many videos you watch, until you have YOUR feet on the pavement you are not going to know whether you will like a particular city. You may like the vibe in Merida or you may not. Either way, I think it would be a mistake to let one negative video about the city dissuade you from checking it out.

@Real one Amariyanna My experience was that some people speak English, some don't. It depends.
I stayed at a little budget hotel on the edge of the historical center my first few days, and all of the front desk staff spoke good English. The rest of the staff spoke limited English or none at all. I then moved to an old historic hotel right off the main plaza. The desk clerks there spoke excellent English. The housekeeper who cleaned my room spoke no English, so I spoke to her in Spanish.
I spoke to 4 or 5 employees at Walmart, none of whom spoke English, so I switched to Spanish. The vendors in the stores near my second hotel all seemed to speak at least a little English; some were fluent. The staff at two cafes near my hotel did not speak English. Neither did the clerks at two Oxxos I went to.
I took a one-hour bus tour of Merida, and one of the ticket sellers spoke excellent English, the other spoke none. Neither of my two Uber drivers spoke English.
I didn't find that "a lot" of people in Merida speak English or that "nobody" does. The truth is somewhere in-between. If a traveler doesn't speak Spanish, they may encounter a few frustrating situations, but overall they should be able to manage just fine.

I haven't been so I can't say you're right or wrong, but I CAN say that "gringo prices" are a thing everywhere and it really pisses me off! My Chicana friend and her boyfriend went. I figured they'd be okay since they're brown and speak Spanish, but NO. The locals saw them as Americans. They said one cab driver refused to give them change and another wanted money for giving them directions. The biggest complaint I've heard about Mexico is the people want money for EVERYTHING! Even at the bloody airport, the employee wanted a tip to do his job and take us to our gate. And our tour guide already got a tip than had the nerve to ask for more. Even in our 5 star hotel, we had to beg the concierge for our change. This really ruined my impression of Mexican people. Another one of my Chicano friends went and said he told some local guy that he's American, and the guy said, "So you're rich and you think you're better than me?" And wanted to fight him. Like I said I've experienced the same kind of mentality in other countries, but I think more so in Mexico than anywhere else. This is something Mexican people really need to work on if they want to earn hospitality points. But my guide told me Mexican people feel they have to be like this in order to survive. One Peruvian girl told me, "$5 is nothing for you, but a lot for them!" It doesn't matter, you don't tell someone 1 Sol, then charge them 20 Sols. The dentist thing happened to my mom in Poland. She got charged extra for being an American. Even in freakin CANADA, we got charged extra in a park for being Americans. WE don't do this to foreigners. They don't realize a lot of Americans save up for years to travel somewhere and students especially travel on a budget. I agree with you that expats can be snobbish, but I'm surprised they would act that way towards their fellow countrymen. The beer ban wouldn't bother me since I don't drink much anyways, but it just surprised me as I thought Mexico was one of the easiest places to get beer. You shouldn't expect them to speak English, but at the same time they shouldn't expect YOU to know the language of every country you visit. Some people just don't want to accept that English has become the universal language. I figured in such a popular tourist and expat destination people would know it. But yeah, this mentality really needs to change. They complain about low wages, but don't take into account what they can buy for those wages. And in Mexico you're considered "poor" if you don't own a car. But I assure you, you're not the only one who had this experience in Mexico. That being said, you could at least TRY to pronounce the name of the town right.

I have to agree with this guy. I've been in Mérida Mexico for almost 3 months. This place is full of liars, swindlers, and most of the city feels like one big slum. Except like one area. The rich area has lots full of trash and dog crap all over the roads. There are better places in Mexico than this city. Cities that are cleaner and a butt load cheaper. I have 8 days left and can't wait to leave.

RUclipsrs in Merida are definitely sugar coating it (I know because I’m in Merida right now). If you’re into going out to eat and feeling safe walking around, you will like it here. But forget about entertainment, you can’t even play basketball. Upside is you can get a 1br apartment close to El Centro for $250 a month or a 2br house for $500 a month. I highly recommend coming here with someone. Right now I’m trying to get someone from the states to join me.

Thank you for this! Very honest and brave! I can assess a place pretty quickly also but it sounds like you have been there before and traveled extensively. Covid may color the experience but I have watched many RUclips videos on Merida where as you said they make it sound like "paradise" . I think they try be positive and not so honest in order to get clicks and subscribers to keep following them while there but the repeated comments that do come through loud and clear that it is way too hot there, comments that Progreso is a cruise ship draw and is a disappointing beach destination even though it one of the closest beaches from Merida (25 minute bus ride?) and comments that Merida doesn't in general have a lot going on . Some like that - some don't but RUclipsr's should be more honest about aspect. The Yarbro's just left due to the heat and not much happening in Merida - they sounded disappointed also. Puerto Vallarta was a very welcoming place, everyone made an effort to help, talk to you, make you feel safe and appreciated you being there and being interested in their area. They were proud to be fair, friendly and also made a point to say that PV was a place where anyone could be anything and you are free be who you are and supported the LGBTQ tourists and anyone there. Yes maybe there is a scam or two or overpricing sometimes- but I think especially with Covid - they were so grateful for visitors, new and future residents and the expats were waving you over for drinks. And yes drinks...also same for Guadalajara, Mexico City.

Because those vloggers A, are either PC Liberals who don't wanna sound "culturally insensitive" and lose subscribers or God forbid get demonatized. Or B, are getting paid by the local tourism board to promote their city. But I partially blame RUclips for threatening to ban vloggers who post even something remotely "offensive". Only seen a handful of honest vlogs. But travel shows do the same thing. Bizarre Foods was able to make dangerous impoverished countries look like welcoming paradise. They portray a false image than people show up and end up disappointing. That's why I miss Anthony Bourdain and Todd Carmichael. They showed the truth. A lot of vloggers don't want to let their bad experiences define a particular location. This is problamatic, because then when you DO post about a negative experience, YOU end up being the bad guy. But from my personal experience, most people on this planet are liars and cheats. And no, people are NOT the same everywhere. Two neighboring countries can have two completely different cultures and mentalities.

American expats don't smile anywhere you go, Latinos do. Not everyone wants to learn English and if you have a language barrier, the experience is even worst. Try saying Buenos Dias with a smile. I used to do tours in Rio de Janeiro and Bahia Brazil. i would have groups of 10 to 20 people, and there’s always the trouble maker(s) in these groups and 9 out of 10 times it was the Americans. People would comment that the Americans always appeared angry at something. Being an expat myself I understood that Americans can come off as entitled, centered and guard their privacy and would explain this to my Brazilian staff and family. Many Americans live a solitary life, based on “work” and earning money, whereas in South America/ Mexico/ Central America - more value is placed on family and friendships,
