I WAS WRONG About MÉRIDA MEXICO 🇲🇽 Yucatan Mexico

- Future Rick Here ... I realize now that my intentions about this video were misunderstood. I didn't give Mérida a far shake and came around to loving the place. But that's not how the video came across. It's not perfect and it's not a super-exciting destination, but it is super comfortable and welcoming. And I'm trying like hell to go back to do it justice.
Mérida is a town in the Yucatan Peninsula. Nice place. Decent "Centro" or Central Area. The requisite cathedral and parks. Interesting place to visit. So why am I feeling this urge to …? 😲

I’m Rick Higgins and I'm on a mission to experience all that life has to offer. Both the normal and the weird.
Every week I bring you tales of my (mis?) adventures as I travel nonstop around the globe. Experiencing cultures, places, and of course, the all important food and beverage. Mind you, this isn't your normal travel channel. No resort level tourist tips here, just a real look at what life outside of one's personal borders could be
Oh and PS … please support the channel! 😇 Lots of behind the scenes stuff, horrendous flubs and bloopers, and a bit of what’s ahead lies just behind the links below. All for less than you just spent at that drive-thru. (Just sayin’).

Like my mom always said “you’re not bored, you’re boring”
I am Mexican, bit European, a bit indigenous, but without a doubt very Yucatecan, culture, I love the peninsula, the Mayan culture. I love being part of the genetic diversity of the region. I am from Chetumal.
And I love your country! (Especially Yucatan!)
Crazy there are tons of open air markets great locally made items imported items, and great food. Awesome mix of not only Mexico and Spain but also Mayan....the food is unique and incredible. I prefer to get my meat at Costco or Sam's Club personally. But b4 you can really get to be a Merida expert...how about start saying it correct. It's no "Marreeda"....its Mare'ida
Working on the pronunciation my friend. I'm planning on a return where I will document the error of my ways.
The food in Merida is bad. I lost weight since I moved here. I am living in 5 months. I hate going to the opened markets because it is crazy hot and it smells bad and very dirty. I went to the opened market in Oaxaca, and it smells chocolate and very clean. They need to do better about garbage in Centro Merida. It's disgusting
You can't even pronounce the name of the city correctly. Each neighborhood does have it's own markets, Santiago, Santa Anna, San Sebastian, Aleman, and the huge Mercado Lucas de Galvez. Did you hear any salsa at La Negrita, Or jazz at Dzalbay?
You are correct, I can't pronounce Mérida. Still can't. I just can't get my lips to work correctly with that name. But I'm working on it. As far as the markets, I did a lot of walking and didn't see one, but I'll feign ignorance on this one by saying I walked a lot (read: I was very lost ... a lot) and didn't see a lot of bodegas. But ... I may have been trying to (incorrectly) base my experience with Mérida from other cities. Other places of similar size seem to have neighborhoods that are more centric, meaning self-sustained. More smaller businesses selling what you need. I saw a lot of neighborhoods that had very little in the way of local offerings. Maybe I need to go back and walk around (read: get lost) some more.
I actually became quite enamored with the city and one day I really want to go back and see it with better eyes. But on that day, those were the eyes I had.
Oh ... and Negrita. Wasn't standing in that long line! LOL!
What was the words to the old Eagles song? "You call some place parricide, Kiss it good by." Great video Rick!
I had to Google "Parricide" ... it means "the killing of a parent or other near relative". I'm not sure Don Henley wrote that version of the song. :-)
@@rickhiggins, LOL I meant Paradise. Freaking auto correct. 🤪
“They call it paradise
I don’t know why
You call someplace paradise
Kiss it goodbye.”
when in mexico do as the mexicans do. reduce your overhead, move west or south of the city, about 10 miles, save a minimum of 30%.good luck and have fun.
Just there two days ago, couldn't wait to leave. A nice airbnb but on all sides just filth. Dogs barking 247 and my daughter had a piece of glass the size of a nickle in her omlette from pan y coffee. How does glass get in an omlette. Went to Merida because of hype by you tubers. 80% city is awful 20% clean and interesting. The people are kind but scamming you with a smile most the time. Gas stations especially.
I would say 80% of the city is clean, because the whole north side is clean, and 20% of the city , mostly in south and a part of Centro is fifty and nasty . Garbage all by the sidewalks. I don't eat in Restaurants in Merida because the food is bad, and disappointing and because the streets are not clean, I got disgusted before I arrive to the retaurant, especially when I have to pass garbage in the street on my way tobeat. That turned my appetite off.
I lived in Merida for eight years, just got back to Canada the 11th of September 2023, I practically run away.
My stepson he'd been stealing from me.
But overall I agree with you, I found nothing but thieves and scammers.
The city has nothing to offer, if you aren't from there, prices go up, the double or more.
I coud write a book.
I'm done with Mexico, not to ever go back.
Get the heck out of there!!
you make good points
Emphasize in the é!!!! MÉrida!!!
I've actually been practicing! LOL! We're going back in a few months and I want to get it right this time! As well as give a better picture of the city ... because it's worth it.
LOL, good sh**...
Do you even know Merida is the 2nd safest city in NORT AMERICA?? Only behind Quebec City Canada
I did hear that! And you can really feel it there (strangely). It's such a peaceful town to wander in.
MOVE OUT!! If it´s so terrible and stop the wining, you have been living there and cannot even pronounce the name of the city.
Yes, I cannot pronounce Mèrida. I'm still trying. Yes, I was whining a bit and my message that I eventually learned to love the city was apparently lost. And finally yes, thanks for watching. :-)
@@rickhiggins I am glad you learned to love the city, it´s beautiful, but like everywhere else, it has its good and bad, it has a nice charm, people is really nice, the food is great!, so many things to do, I am glad to hear you found yourself in that great place.
@@miriamsolorio4822 Ahem, the food. It's ... OH MY GOD GREAT! I'm currently sitting in Dublin, which wile nice has really not so nice food. I seriously miss me some pibil.
Amazing what you can find out about a city after being there for 7 days! Sounds like a place to avoid.
Actually kinda the opposite. The place is starting to grow on me. I was in kind of an unhappy place when I made this. I should have looked around more it seems. There is a lot of good here.
Not at all. We love Merida
I've been here 7 years. The ultimate. Very hot 4 months of the year. Huge mosquitoes. All 👍 good
So if you think that, why haven't you removed this video? It's misleading@@rickhiggins
@@carolk2317 I assume you didn’t get to the end of the video. I actually love Mérida. The video was my long journey in understanding that. I actually cannot wait to go back.
Your pronounciation hurts my ears. Otherwise, fantastic video.
Yea, I got that a lot. LOL! I've been practicing for when I go back. :-)
This IS clickbait
Dusty streets and broken sidewalks - really ! If you don’t like it then don’t visit Mexico at all - wow
I know, my attempt at ironic humor was lost on most people. I blame the tacos and tequila. LOL! Turns out I loved the place, I just wasn't in the right frame of mind to tell the story the way it needed to be told.
Hey mr American man, in the first place you need to learn to enunciate the name of the town you are staying at. You are forgiven for not knowing this on your first day there, but after one week you are STILL saying wrong, wrong, wrong. How about some of that "industriousness the Americans are "famous " for, hey hombre, get to work on the culture and the language, and not just the sun and the tequila.
