We went to Mérida in December 2023 as we were inspired by this trip series. I thought I would post an update in case anyone is thinking of doing the trip as well. We loved it here and highly recommend going! Ok, in no particular order. 1. We loved taqueria la lupita and de la union, both were affordable, tasty, and just a great experience. One pro tip, la lupita gets pretty busy. If you show up and there is a crowd, go to the chained off area and ask for a number. They will call you when it is your turn to sit. We also really enjoyed eating at Mugy and Manjar Blaco. El apapacho was just ok and was by far had the most tourists of the places we ate. 2. The food is all so good, be sure to try and many different dishes as you can! 3. If you really want a more "local" feel, I recommend the Mercado San Benito. Also, there are a number of great bakeries in that area. 4. Uxmal is a must do. We drove by Chichen Itza and it was so crowded, busy, and chaotic. Uxmal was so incredible and very chill. 5. The cenotes are awesome. We rented a car so we were able to see a lot of them. 6. Renting a car was easy and we were not bothered by the police, even when I went the wrong way at a checkpoint. I know other parts of Mexico can be iffy, but we had no problems and loved being able to see more of the area. 7. Fewer people spoke English than we anticipated. We always got by, but if you are used to European travel, it will be a different experience. Again, not a big deal, but be prepared. 8. You absolutely need cash. Few places took cards. 9. You generally have to pay to use the bathrooms (5 pesos was what we saw) and they often were out of water or toilet paper. So, you may want to bring hand sanitizer and a little TP, just to be safe. We absolutely loved our time there and would recommend it!
SCREAMS!!! Me and partner are constantly watching vids before our international travels. We both noticed you had a camera (the day at El Barrio) and said how crazy it would be if you all blogged and we ended up finding seeing your channel! We couldn’t catch you all before you left but guess that doesn’t matter now. Ha! Well what a surprise lol! Thank you again for letting us grab the table and I hope you all enjoyed your stay! We were also there for 2wks the 9-23rd. If you need some food spots to try let me know, we covered SO MANY!
Hahaha NO WAY! That is so funny and awesome that y'all found us on here! Thank you for taking the sunny table lol 😂 We just got back to Texas last night, but it was such an amazing trip. We hope y'all enjoyed Mérida as much as we did!
I love Merida! So colorful and that architecture! Such a festive place! OMGosh…that bowl of yumminess made my mouth water! I would have loved the “Mexican” chocolate milk…looked oh so yummy! Can’t forget that ice cream 😋🤤! Great job once again!
We hadn't until a couple years ago either! Since we've visited Merida our Mexico bucket list has grown. We've heard good things about Oaxaca, Chiapas, San Cristobal de las Casas, Guadalajara, and many more!
Yay seeing a new video of yours just makes my day! So glad you guys are having an awesome time in Mexico! I’m sure it feels really good to get work tasks done too, nothing like the satisfaction of getting stuff checked off the checklist! I’ve actually been going back and watching your channel from the beginning- I’ve watched so much of your van journey in the last 1-2 years but wanted to see how it all started! Super excited to watch this new chapter too of international travel combined with US travel 😊
We're of course not getting as much done as we'd like, but we're still accomplishing some! Ooooo you can skip those early ones! 😂🙈 some of those are cringeworthy. Thanks so much, Kathryn!
@@AdventuresofAplusK lol all of your videos have been wonderful! But I can imagine you have learned so much over the years about what works the best for creating your videos! Keep up the excellent work!
I'm watching you guys in Merida and I'm missing it so much! I've been there a couple of times and loved it, but for one reason or another have yet to return. I'd done the bicycling thing a few years ago. I remember that it was so chaotic trying to get in line and get a bike, but once you did, it was nice. I mostly walked around as you are doing today and so a lot of places look familiar, and I can't wait to see more of your adventures in this beautiful city! thanks! Sandy
Calle 64A was stunning 😍 Instagrammers dream! I'd half expected the blue cheese ice cream to be a bit like cheese cake, but I can't stand blue cheese so would likely have hated it. Strange how cheese seems to work its way into desserts so well - Kunafa was another dessert with cheese and it worked so well!
The buildings and homes here are so gorgeous and have so much character! It's interesting how cheese is used in dishes here. It's used in dishes you wouldn't expect and not in some you might think would go well. Never heard of kunafa, but it looks tasty! Would love to try it one day!
You guys have come so far in your RUclips journey over the years. You’re an inspiration to us as we begin the scary journey of starting our own little channel. Can’t wait to see what you get up to this year!
New to your channel. Not even sure how I found it, but I'm hooked. Old enough to be your grandparents but still love to travel with you and 'wish' we were younger. We lived in the northwest, central CA, AZ, and KS. So our younger selves have been in many of your travelled places, but still love to watch and see where we 'should have gone' in days past. We love to support local coffee and foods so those parts of your videos are great, but finding local coffee it not easy if you are just 'traveling thru. Keep up the good work. You have a great balance of history, food, coffee, and living your dreams.
Missing your longer and more frequent videos! My daughter and I watch as part of our homeschool while we eat breakfast ❤ I know you were feeling burnt out and needing to slow down. But just know we’re looking forward to more content to come this year!
Thank you for watching! We’re really focusing on a better life / work balance at the beginning of this year, plus focusing on the other half of our business (our website!), so some of our videos will be a bit shorter to start the year, but we have many videos to come!
You found EL BARRIO! Love that place! Did you have breakfast there? Their french toast is unlike anything you've ever had before. I'm drooling just thinking about it ....
As I'm enjoying Mexico with you, snow is falling in N E Ohio. The architecture of the buildings is beautiful. Nice to see older buildings being preserved., something that doesn't happen as much in the states. I miss Kona-but the cats have some video time. 👍👍🏍🏍🏍❄❄🙋♂️
Brr! The old buildings and architecture is so nice to see! That is something we have really been missing from traveling so much in the US...everything is relatively new. It's interesting seeing buildings here that are 100s of years old! We miss Kona BIG TIME! Can't wait to get back to her! There have been lots of doggos and cats here though so that helps a little bit!
Hey, I was just getting ready to make a really nice comment and I noticed how you track your mileage. Would you mind sharing the name of the app please? Just from the single screen I saw everything I was looking for. Ok, on to the compliment. You guys are really good. My wife and I stumbled onto your channel a while back. Between your chemistry, energy and lots of relaxing style in your vids; your vids really draw you in. We have been looking at Mérida to retire. So glad we watched as everything we are looking for is there, especially the parks, plazas, etc…. The winter temp could be interesting. You’re killing me with the ice cream especially the coconut cinnamon.
Hey! Are you talking about for walking mileage or car mileage? I had a whole response typed up for the vehicle mileage and then Kathryn said, “he’s probably talking about the walking.” Lol. For walking (and what we showed in this video) is the Health app on iPhone. It’s awesome and free! If you have iPhone it will already be there! For vehicle mileage we use MileIQ! It’s great too! Mérida is awesome! Tons of great food, coffee shops, plazas, parks, and nice people! We have a few more videos to share from here that might seal the deal for y’all! Thanks so much for your comment. That means a lot to us! Thank you for watching! PS my review of the coconut cinnamon ice cream flavor wasn’t my best. It’s hard to review ice cream sometimes. When it’s melting fast it gets really frantic! 😂 After the camera turned off there were chunks of coconut shreds and cinnamon! 👌
Beautiful city with so much history. I checked... Phoenix to Meridia is around $700/person roundtrip.... my wife would love a vacation there (I put it on the the list). Looking forward to your next food video... I already know how good authentic Mexican food is and I can't wait to see and hear your reactions to the flavors and tastes of everything you try. Take in all you can and enjoy... that's the pleasure of traveling. Cheers! Pete in Arizona.
We tried so many delicious food items here and we love how much variety the Mexican cuisine has! We had never had most of the foods we tried and it was mighty delicious. And just like you have said and as we mention at the end of our food video...food is half the reason we love to travel!
I've been to Mexico four times. The last visit I ordered a bottled soft drink at a restaurant and never considered that ice would be my downfall, which was dumb on my part. Sicker than a dog for about 36 hours. That was 25 years ago and I haven't been back. Merida looks really nice though, lots of nice Colonial architecture.
We think we got sick from an ice cube on our last trip and you’d think we’d have learned our lesson, but we’ve had ice cubes this trip a few times and no issues so far thankfully! We’ve had a great time here in Merida so far!
Nice video and glad to see videos on Latin America. That plaza reminded me of the plaza in Arequipa Peru which is an awesome place to visit (they have crazy good cheese ice cream there)
Hola guys Mexican 🍦 ice cream helados is the best my favorite is coco 🥥 coconut so yummy 😋 have a cup for me. The area and weather look awesome that's a part of Mexico I haven't been to. Been close Cancun and playa de Carmen. Enjoy. They could have given you bigger spoons 😂🤣😂
Hola, Kevin! We've been dabbling in some Mexican sweet treats and are excited to share! So much good food here! We'll need to bring our own utensils some time!
Love watching your hiking and outdoor activities. I am not a foodie and not liking the touristy stuff that much. But looks like you are having a great time and I do like watching that. You both deserve it.
There are many aspects of travel beyond the outdoors and we like to showcase and experience it all, including the culture, history, city life, and food (everyone has to eat!), which has always been our goal for this channel.
Gracias! I was a teacher for 6 years and most of my students were Hispanic and many spoke Spanish as their first language. Before that I took Spanish in school for several years. You’d think I’d be fluent by now, but unfortunately I’m not 😅. I want to continue learning!
It is very beautiful here! We have been drinking lots of aguas frescas and eating the ice cubes! No issues so far. Restaurants use the filtered water for the beverages they make
Most of the time we don’t because prices often change so we don’t want to say something and then it’s incorrect. We are mentioning the prices of many things in these Mexico videos, though. We always link every place we visit in the description of every video. The menu and pricing can usually be found on Google Maps photos 👍 We’ll be sharing the price of our Airbnb in the Airbnb tour video we’ll be filming and releasing in a few weeks.
I (Adam) can converse a bit. It's the speed that is tough! I can pick up on key words and piece it together with the context of the situation and respond with something that mostly makes sense 😂. Kathryn is trying hard to learn as well, but we both sort of panic when someone is talking to us lol. It has helped to know some basic phrases and words while here. You are always greeted in Spanish, but most of the restaurants and places we've been the waiter or person helping you knows some English.
This is a fantastic video, and very useful for my upcoming trip. However, small quip: you shouldn't use Cuban music to preface a video about Mexico, and your intro music is DEF Cuban. :)
Thanks for watching! The options for Latin music that we can legally use on RUclips is extremely limited and it didn't say anything about being Cuban on our end. We liked how it sounded and how it fit the vibe we wanted! 😃
I live in New Orleans, a city known for being unsafe, but RUclipsrs who visit here hardly ever mention safety on their videos. Yet, when people travel abroad, suddenly safety becomes a big deal. It seems like this worry is more about misunderstandings, biases, and bad info about other countries.
Sometimes we have them and sometimes we don't, it just depends on how filming went. We try to not put pressure ourselves to have them if it doesn't organically happen.
great work I love your videos! just a constructive criticism it is pronounced MEJICO not MeXico thank you guys I am not from Mejico BTW just love it as much.
We had one in the past and it just wasn't a good fit for us for a variety of reasons. The best way to support us is what you're already doing! Watching, liking, subscribing, reading our website and sharing our content with others! 😊 Thank you to both!
Isnt salsa music puerto rican, cuban, and dominican type music? Its like playing chinese music in a thai restaurant. I say that cause my hubbys mexican and hates hearing salsa music associated with mexican culture.
Yes you are correct and we understand why some would be bothered by it. Unfortunately there isn’t a large selection of Mexican music on the the royalty free music services we use. It’s not that we don’t know the difference, there just isn’t much to choose from. We’re doing the best we can with what we have available to us.
We walked a TON in Mérida (many days over 8 miles!) and used Didi/Uber to get around town, mostly for Walmart runs though! As for outside of the city, we had a guide for a cenotes tour (which will be our next video!) and then took a public bus to some ruins!

I am so jealous. Love Merida. La Chaya Maya, the architecture, the everything.

Congrats 👏 👏 👏 👏
Bienvenidos!
Nice video and glad to see videos on Latin America. That plaza reminded me of the plaza in Arequipa Peru which is an awesome place to visit (they have crazy good cheese ice cream there)
We hope to visit Peru and many other places in S. America one day!

We’ll be sharing the price of our Airbnb in the Airbnb tour video we’ll be filming and releasing in a few weeks.
This is so fun! Do you two speak Spanish? And is NOT speaking Spanish a huge problem there??
We totally agree!
Do you feel the city is safe?
We have felt very safe!
No dance at the end? Awww. 😔
Gotta keep y'all on your toes and have some variety. 😉
👍👍🚐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐👍👍
Bloopers? Miss those
Sometimes we have them and sometimes we don't, it just depends on how filming went. We try to not put pressure ourselves to have them if it doesn't organically happen.
great work I love your videos! just a constructive criticism it is pronounced MEJICO not MeXico thank you guys I am not from Mejico BTW just love it as much.
That’s correct…if you’re saying it in Spanish. We were speaking in English in this video
Meanwhile 29 F in California desert 🏜
ADAM bueno Spainush
Whaa, I don't do instagram
You guys are awesome. My wife and I have been watching you for years. You guys need a Patreon page. I'd love to help support your travels.
We had one in the past and it just wasn't a good fit for us for a variety of reasons. The best way to support us is what you're already doing! Watching, liking, subscribing, reading our website and sharing our content with others! 😊 Thank you to both!
Pola gelato ? really? if you are in Mejico you enjoy artisanal helados Cmon!
We had both during our trip 😊
Isnt salsa music puerto rican, cuban, and dominican type music? Its like playing chinese music in a thai restaurant. I say that cause my hubbys mexican and hates hearing salsa music associated with mexican culture.
Yes you are correct and we understand why some would be bothered by it. Unfortunately there isn’t a large selection of Mexican music on the the royalty free music services we use. It’s not that we don’t know the difference, there just isn’t much to choose from. We’re doing the best we can with what we have available to us.
These videos are making me want to plan my next trip here! How are you guys traveling to each location? Did you guys have a rental car?
We walked a TON in Mérida (many days over 8 miles!) and used Didi/Uber to get around town, mostly for Walmart runs though! As for outside of the city, we had a guide for a cenotes tour (which will be our next video!) and then took a public bus to some ruins!
