As a child I grew up in Cuernavaca Mexico. A few years ago we decided to return but wanted to try a different part of Mexico. After doing some research we decided that Merida would be our destination. We immedieately fell in love and after a few return trips we decided to have a home built there. It really is the complete package as far as cities go. Big enough but not too big, plenty of areas to explore, beach is very close and the people are wonderful. Oh and of course the food is phenominal. Great video and its nice to see that you guys enjoyed the city.

Living as an American in Mérida, Mexico, offers a charming and culturally immersive experience. Mérida, the capital of the Yucatan state, is known for its colonial architecture, vibrant arts scene, and a strong expat community. Many Americans are drawn to the city's warm climate, affordable cost of living, and welcoming locals. While some knowledge of Spanish can be helpful, English is commonly spoken among expats and in tourist areas. Mérida's rich Mayan heritage, local cuisine, and relaxed way of life make it a delightful place for Americans to experience the best of Mexico's culture and hospitality. Thanks, Chris and Sara!

I've been in Merida for 3 years now, from Minnesota usa. Nice piece, o lot of good info. The people of the Yucatan, 65-70 percent, are NOT Mexican, they are Yucateca. I have been so fortunate to have native Yucatecan friends, visit their families homes, tahmec, homun peublos near Merida. They speak Maya to one another. If you return, go to the cenotes, ancient sites using public transport. Seriously, a real experience to say the least. I have stood at the side of the road, no store, building, nothing for miles. Here comes the bus, flag it down, get in. Try that in the usa ! Take care, keep going on adventures 😊

2 years in Merida so far and will never set foot in the USA again. Great people, healthy cheap nutritious FRESH food without preservatives, and plenty to see and do all year long, from museums and galleries to cenotes and fishing trips, there is something for everyone. Best part of Mexico is there are VERY FEW LAWYERS, which means people don't sue each other over trivial little accidents. I feel SAFER here than I ever felt in America and have never met anyone who was threatening, violent or patently insane. Yes, the power goes off from time to time and you have to buy drinking water and watch out for mosquitos, but healthcare, entertainment, transportation and general quality of life are head and shoulders better here, as long as you can get used to the heat & humidity.

icymbi: Progresso is generally accepted as the approximate central point where the most important event in the development of modern terrestrial life occurred - the Chicxulub impact when an asteroid about 6 miles wide struck Earth 66 million years ago. this impact triggered the global mass extinction event (including the dinosaurs dying off) as the Cretaceous Period ended & Paleogene Period began: the Cretaceous - Paleogene boundary. that impact also caused the many cenotes in the area.

02:33 Just as a point, those buildings aren't colonial. The golden period of Merida architecture happened 80 years after the end of the colonial period and Mexico was it's own country. Most of the buildings downtown that are so beautiful now didn't look like that when they were built, they were simple buildings then and in the late 1800's were "remodeled" will all of the ornamentation that was popular during the late 1800's. The massive mansions on Paseo de Montejo are definitely not colonial as they were built 380 years after the founding of Merida and well into the 20th century. This doesn't mean that abject wealth doesn't have an ugly side, it does but it didn't have to do with colonization in their case.
09:55 You are correct, the Museo de Gastronomy de Yucateca is not something locals would go to. You can get better versions of this food in any economica for 50 pesos. For instance the best Lechon in the city is at a stand in a parque and they're there only in the morning. The best Cochinita Pibil is at a person's house and they only cook it on Sundays and they're sold out by 10. However, if you want to have a reasonable representation of Yucateco food Museo de Gastronomia Yucateca isn't a bad place to do it. The environment is pleasant and clean and the food isn't bad.
13:13 We used Merida as a central hub to visit the Ruta Puuc and spent most of the time in Merida. We returned to the states, sold or gave away everything we didn't want to keep and moved to Merida. That was some years ago and we've never left. This happens.
15:01 You don't need a work VISA, you can stay for up to 180 days on your passport. A lot of people start out this way before proceeding onto Residence VISAs and in some cases citizenship.
The one thing that always stays the with Merida is that nothing stays the same. You made this video 1 year ago from my commenting and the city has changed a lot in that year. The city has bought 1300 new modern, buses, many electric or hybrid, our massive Parque la Plancha opened, we got a new 1500 km eco friendly train system in the Yucatan and Merida has 2 train stations on each end, the airport got remodeled, bike paths went in everywhere, pedestrian crossing lights etc.. Calle 47 is now pedestrian only and connects Pase de Montejo and La Plancha and is lined with restaurants (expensive) and is beautiful. For a 480 year old city it sure changes fast.
    Cheers!

@@chrisandsara yeah Mexico City and Cancun. Once again, you can visit more incredible places in Mexico that Mexico city and Cancun for instance in Chiapas, Oaxaca, san Luis Potosí, Jalisco. I mean I know that Mexico city and Cancun is the most popular but just that. You can find most beautiful places in Mexico or Mexico city and Cancun are not the only places that you can visit

@@chrisandsara for your next trip to Mexico you should investigate other options in Mexico. Believe me, there are many many other options as beautiful and interesting as Mexico city or Cancun.

The reason the locals tell you not to go there is because they don’t want tourist there because then the values goes up and it get to expensive. I think ya already knew that. And please encourage for gringos and Europeans to pay more instead off taking advantage. Thank you

I hear your point. Never did we encourage anyone to move to Mérida though. I will say though that calling people gringos comes off as aggressive and truthfully it'll be hard for those interested in moving to Mérida to hear your point of view if you speak to them that way. It's always best to treat others with the same respect you wish to receive. ❤

That was funny .These people are never going to need hip replacement's .Merida is beautiful but I couldn't live there do to the very high humidity.I don't mind the heat so much but I'm not a fan of high humidity.I prefer a colonial city high up in the mountains with cool weather .I think Merida would be a great place to visit in the cooler months.

We'd love to visit more of the cities in the mountains! The only one we've been to so far is Mexico City and we'd love to visit some smaller ones. Mérida is certainly a great place to escape to during the cooler months! :)

Just a note! The display in front of the cathedral at night is NOT Inca as you said but it is a Maya "game" you need to do some research on Merida! I live just 20 mins outside of Merida. It is a wonderful place - just do some research!!

Hi Barb, thanks for watching, but we never once called in Incan so I'm not sure where you thought you heard that. We certainly did lots of research ahead of time and learned a lot about Mérida and its history.😊

If you simply learn how to say the vowels, A E I O U in Spanish then you will know how to say any word correctly in Spanish. Unlike English there is only one way so say those vowels in Spanish. They never change.
