  • Music: Presence of the Moment - Steve Haun
    As the "Line 4" of the MBTA's subway system, the Red Line connects up most of the "central" areas of Boston, including Harvard University, MIT, the South Station, and the downtown area. With the highest average daily ridership, this line is equipped with more than 200 wide and long subway cars. Most of these cars are fairly old: model #1 (1500s and 1600s) were manufactured by Pullman-Standard in 1969-1970; model #2 (1700s) were manufactured by UTDC in 1987-1989; model #3 (1800s) were manufactured by Bombardier in 1993-1994 (which are all in much better condition, and runs MUCH smoother and quieter than older series).
    On 12/30/2020, the first #4 (1900s and 2000s) train, leaded by #1900 and #1904 on either end, came into service. It was manufactured by CRRC in 2019, and are equipped with high-tech facilities like info screens, security cameras, auto systems, and ridership counters. Most parts of this train looks the same comparing to the Orange Line's 1400s, except the color.
    The video was taken on a #1800s train, as it is also going to retire by 2023, so it is worth memorable. Another reason is that #1900s has a thick curtain behind the "railfan window", leaving a small part that could be opened up only from inside the drivers' cab. Indeed, most 1800s offer a great front view.
    The faces of the crews aren't included in this video. As the headstock seat isn't allowed to be taken yet, I was recording this by standing behind and holding my camera straight forward.
    Thanks for watching!

    Gods the music is so damn perfect for this video. I especially love how you perfectly timed the video and music so that the big musical changes would occur when the trains change from surface-running to underground

    This is a very well presented time lapse video but the Bombardiers aren't going to be replaced by the CRRC's. The CRRC's are replacing the 1969-70 Pullman "Silverbirds" and then the 1980s UTDC "Redbirds".

    The new cars need noise generators. They're too quiet. You can't hear them coming.

  • @simonsv9449

    The funny thing is that you’d expect Central to be in downtown Boston and South Station to be south of Boston but actually, it’s South Station that’s in downtown Boston and Central is west of Boston.

    I still don't understand what's exactly wrong with the Bombardier's. They don't seem that old and its technology still seems prominent. 2023 is too early to retire them, especially when the blue line received their shorter version in 2008. Somebody please educate me what the current problems are with the 01800s and the 0700s are.

    • @kevinhld5499
      @kevinhld5499  2 года назад

      So the 0700s aren't gonna be replaced shortly-they are still new enough. For the 1800s though I would envision them to be replaced later comparing to those Pullmans and UTDCs. The most urgent replacement now is on the orange line. In fact, we know that MBTA is not THAT quick in putting in new trains, so probably the 1800s still got a whole bunch of years to run
