Well, you've done it again. You set your viewers up to believe that something won't work, then you turn a piece of absolute beauty. Well done, once again!
Thank you Simon. I enjoyed your tool work with the long shavings coming off. Sometimes defects in the wood can add to the beauty of the piece and this is a good example. Alan.
I love flaming box elder, but almost every piece I turn has cracks and worm holes and soft spalted areas. But the shavings they produce are like candy ribbons!! Love it! Keep them coming, thanks for sharing!
Wow that vase is beautiful, theres like 4 different colors!! that finish is amazing...I just moved to Los Angeles from NYC, I am a dancer, and I am getting into wood working. I saw Frank Howarth woodturning a year ago and definitley wanted to do it. Ive since watched like 500 videos and am now just starting to buy tools. Really appreciative for people like you who make amazing art and sharing it with us. You inspire people like me to venture into something ive never done, but definitely feel born to do.
That turned out amazing Simon. I'm glad to see someone else take chances with cracked or imperfect wood. A lot of times it comes apart but the ones I save are always amazing. When I turn cracked pieces I wrap blue tape around the outside to keep it from flying apart. Take care my friend and do a kindness Mark
You are your harshest critic. I have learned to use the Four Foot Rule- if it cannot be seen from 4", it does not matter. The piece is eye candy! Good work!
Oh man, I've been waiting for you to turn some of this box elder ever since you showed off your wood pile, and I was not disappointed. :) Absolutely beautiful! Thank you for sharing your art!
My wife wants to know how much these cost. They are priceless of course as good art always is, perhaps a better question is what are most people paying?
Yet another beautiful piece. Very well done, you make it look easy, but I know it is not easy. Have you ever considered writing a book with your techniques and methods ? Keep them coming!
A very nice piece but maybe next time you may want to turn it down some then stabilize the wood. Then finish it off. You could also have turned it some then stabilized it then sealed the cracks with a clear Alumilite resin. Looks good but with those two suggestions I think that you would have been much more pleased with the results. I never turned box elder but a recent wind storm has brought down three large trees at my parents house. I will be turning a lot of it soon. Good luck o you on your next project.
Where did you learn your trade? I have seen a lot of your videos (and will watch more) and have not seen one piece of your work that I would love to own, everything you touch turns out beautiful.
+African Cichlids hahaha, it was a 90° lacquer. I live monteregie close to us border . I been there in new Brunswick 4 years ago . Really nice place by the see there .
