I work as a carpenter in the Netherlands and love to see craftsmen at work. I am surprised at how clean the bowls turned out in the end. Seeing some of the machines the old man use made me a bit nervous, but being his age still having all his fingers and toes, and being so nimble. He has my respect.

Note the kid's already lost parts of two fingers on his right hand, no doubt from running wood on the jointer towards the exposed turning saw blade.

First off he is a master and secondly, it tells me the art is not the new latest and greatest whizbang equipment you can buy, but mastering what equipment you have and the simpler it is, the better I suppose. Very nice and it's good to see others are learning from a true master to carry on. I enjoy the fact that he is using both hands and his foot to control the process.

I love how they don’t waste a huge block of wood to make such a large bowl, that young lad matched the grains of the wood so well that once the master craftsman finished turning and polishing the bowl the grain stood out like it had been from one larger block of wood not from one slab of wood. This is craftsmanship at its best.

    • @dangerous8333
      @dangerous8333 2 года назад +9

First of all, making a bowl out of a single piece of wood is sought after, its not a waste. Also, most people that do this use the chips and sawdust for other things.
Did these planks of wood not come from a bigger slab as well? So how is it a waste to keep it as a larger solid piece opposed to cutting it into smaller pieces first?
Doing it this way is the cheap way, or when you don't have access to better wood. Also, not having glue in your piece is considered higher quality.
Where I give them credit is they are trying to use as little wood as possible to make these, to maximize profit. Although the extra labor involved is probably canceling that out. The only reason they may still make a profit in the end is because they pay these guys practically nothing I bet. If they actually paid these guys a proper wage they wouldn't be able to spend the time doing this. They would have to do it a faster way in order to make a profit. So while they're getting more bowls out of the wood they're using, it's taking longer and it's being done on the backs of these Craftsman.
I don't understand your comment about the grain. Why would the grain stand out any different? It's wood. Whether it's a block of wood or planks of wood glued together, it's still wood, and once you polish it the grain will show.
      🤷
"This is master craftsmanship at its finest"
It's actually pretty basic and most intermediate wood lathers can do this. I wouldn't waste my time though. The amount of time it took him to make this I could have made two bowls or more out of a solid piece of wood.

It's not ingenuity. It's basic wood turning. Livelihood? They're probably being paid slave wages to do this. Homemade tools? It's the same tools anyone else would use to do this.
      Americans are lazy?
Then how come Americans dominate on RUclips for Craftsman channels? They might watch these videos but they actually subscribe to American craftsman channels.
Americans, other westerners, and Scandinavian countries teach everyone else how to do these things properly, but yeah, all 350 million of us are lazy.

Saves wood a little, but it's not fast all, it's very slow.
I could make 3 bowls in the time he does this.
They're only doing this to maximize the profits of the person that sells them at the expense of the extra labor involved. They probably pay these guys slave wages.
In other words, they're making them work harder and longer just to get more bowls out of their wood stock.
The only person benefiting is the person that actually sells the bowls.
      Edit:
Keep in mind this video is edited and not in real time.

@@dangerous8333 agreed, but wood in Pakistan is a very precious comodity.
I can make a spalted tan oak bowl wood leftovers from a forest fire in 6 hours, it'll cost $150 American, or something simpler in 1 hour for $40 American.
Both will loose 80% of the wood to sawdust.
      My bigger headache, sawdust disposal.
And then I have to pay electric, rent, disposal of sawdust, super market food prices, accident costs(I can't afford insurance), food safety issues cost, seasoning storage between carving stages, tools(four angle grinders, myriad attachments, including two from arbortech and two from Graff speed cutters, do not know how many Chinese ones, Sand paper, 60 to 800 grit, clamps, finishes, compressor for quick blowing, and a leaf blower for after work yard cleanup), I'm fortunate to make $10/hour retailing through a friend's daughter's roadside shop at about 60/40 below 100 and 50/50 above that. I have to run a ship at least as tight as Cargill Kaiser put together 😁
I get the wood free though. Being a woodcutter, lumber maker (using an Alaskan Mill), supplemented with bowls and firewood.
