The people in the restaurants would make fun of the band because they had long hair. Lyrics - "Is that a woman or a man?" Back then, long hair was seriously frowned upon.

This song is easy to relate to. When he sings about walking into a restaurant and people are staring at him wondering if he’s a woman or a man, because of his long hair. Anyone who’s ever felt alone or felt like an outcast can relate that feeling. It’s probably his best song. He’s in my top 5 of all time.

Not on his released tracks anyway. In one interview he said he feels compelled to finish writing every song he starts, and as a consequence he occasionally finished some really bad songs.😁

When I saw him do this song, the sax player climbed up to the top of the stadium, balanced himself with one leg between two guard rungs, leaned backwards, all lights dimmed, except the spotlight on the sax player, wailing out his solo, then the lights slowly came up on the stage with Bob & the band. OH, my God! Outside arena, beautiful dark Summer night I will never forget it! I'm a Michigander and we selfishly claim Bob Seger as ours! Rock on forever, Mr. Fabulous Bob Seger! xoxoxoxoxo

Nice reaction to a classic! Something people miss in the lyrics: when he's talking about going into the cafe from the cold, he says sometimes you hear people talk other times you can't. It's the same o'l cliché, is that a woman or a man. He's referencing how people would say that with dudes with long hair, visualize the 70s when every dude had long hair and the older generation would chastise them for having it. It really speaks to how people talk down on others for being outside their norm. Been going on forever

Bob Seger is a great rock singer, songwriter & musician known for his raspy powerful voice. He wrote & recorded songs that dealt with love, women & blue-collar themes. He had so many great songs especially in the 70's-80's such as "Ramblin' Gamblin' Man", "Night Moves", "Turn The Page", "Mainstreet", "Still The Same", "Hollywood Nights", "Against The Wind", "You'll Accomp'ny Me", "Shame On The Moon", "Roll Me Away", "Like A Rock", "Shakedown", "We've Got Tonight" & "Old Time Rock & Roll".

Many many cigarettes, make for a really "RASPY" voice, but in the end those cigarettes end up ruining not only your voice but your life overall!!
Bob Segar knows this, as I know this from first hand experience. I ""WAS"" a talented and gifted singer and could sing anything!! By the time I reached to age of 50 my voice could no longer do what it use to. I know that had I not been a lifelong smoker my voice could have lasted for many, many more years. This message is for all of the gifted singers out there, if you smoke and want to continue to belt out that great voice of your's ((PLEASE-QUIT!!)) I know much easier than most people have any 💡. Anyhow, thanks y'all for your awesome channel and mostly for just being YOU... 🤗

Rest in peace, Thomas Cartmell, AKA Alto Reed, one of Seger's legendary Silver Bullet Band members and saxophone player. He died one year ago today, December 30, 2020.
May I recommend one of Bob's best and least requested tracks, "Famous Final Scene". It is an absolutely stunning track about the end of a relationship and will be highly relatable to many.

Story time! My dad committed suicide when I was 17 years old, 2 weeks before my 18th birthday and 1 week after Father's Day. He always told me he wanted this song played at his funeral. Well, i made sure it was played. The saxophone is so eerie in a chapel. If you listen to this song from a depressed person's mindset, it has a whole nother meaning. Still gives me goose bumps.

I'm the guy who is popular amongst friends and loved ones but feeling alone in the spotlight on the stage. He has an amazing ability of tapping into the feelings I don't say aloud for fear of being the only one who feels that way, yet reminds me I'm not alone.

This was back before they had become frontliners, they were out on the road taking turns driving and sleeping show to show, they had very long hair, hence the comment they would hear "Is that a Woman or a Man"? Outside of Detroit they weren't well known but they did 250 shows a year promoting themselves and performing to get better known and following by fans. Ramblin Gamblin Man, Old Time Rock and Roll, Roll Me Away, Nutbush City Limits, Hollywood Nights, Rock and Roll Never Forgets, and Let It Rock are all great songs if you want to see the Rocker in Bob Seger come out. Check them out! You two do a great job! Thanks for playing Bob Seger!

This song is about being on the road on tour and how it's the same thing over and over again: "There I am on the stage, turn the page, there I am on the stage, turn the page......"

This was recorded live as the encore to one of their concerts. Asia, your instinct was dead on about that saxophone solo at the beginning being a call to attention!
Metallica did a cover of this song that was amazing! I think you'll like the rougher edge on it.
Another great song about artists being on the road is "The Load Out", by Jackson Browne

Bob is one of the greatest story tellers of all time. His songs not only paint a picture, they put you in the middle of a world he is singing about. Bob is one of out hometown heroes. I was born and raised in Metro Detroit and he is from right here. Out of so many great Detroit/ Michigan performers he is at the top of the list.

I think the commonality between Kenny Rogers and Bob Segers voice (along many others) is that they are story tellers...they draw you in. They know how to paint a picture.

Bob wasn't a "sell out" either. He was true to his heart. Family man too. Had this vinyl record. Bab has about 100 tunes nobody knows about because he was "The Bob Seger System" before "The Silver Bullet Band." Came from the Detroit Michigan area (Mowtown) and that's why he had that soulful bluesy sound quality to his raspy/smokey voice.

This is the thing about being a performer traveling all the time stopping to get something to eat and then it's back to being on the stage again. It's not such a glamorous life as people think it is having to perform and give you 100% every time
