It's crazy because as a teenager when this came out, even though Bob was describing all that sexual tension, and being devil may care, we all felt it was more of a
cautionary tale of "Autumn Closing In". It was strange to hear the song back then looking forward, and now at 60 with Autumn Arrived. The song is timeless.

@@maggynewtown3500 yeah, I wasn't speaking about record labels.
You do know that Motown refers to detorit, MI, right?
Born on May 6, 1945 in Detroit and raised in Ann Arbor, Seger's interest in music was inspired by his father, who started his son's musical trajectory by teaching him to play the ukulele.
Bob Segar, with regard to rock n roll, is the epitome of Motown music, not the label but the genre. Thanks for your reply.

All time classic song. And yes it is about the literal Night Moves that the young folk working and practicing in the backseat and trusty woods... But it is also about looking back on your life and remembering those times. So the lines about Autumn closing in are also about a man approaching or in middle age looking back on those times when you just didn't seem to have as much to lose. Lines like that are what make Bob such a masterful storyteller in addition to the class A instrumental musicianship and performance.
And soulful is a perfect word to describe his voice. Takes em to church at the end!

I'm always amazed at the way young people want to classify every song/singer into a specific "genre". Good songwriting comes from the heart, doesn't it? Kinda puts the technical stuff aside when inspiration enters the picture.

It would have be hard in the mid to late 80s to find a southern boy that didn't know Bob Seger, CCR, Alabama and George Straight. The rock songs and country songs crossed over each other.🎶

I was in the 10th grade when they released this song. Like everybody I bought the album. 20 years later it comes on the car radio. I’m naturally blasting it. But I finally understood the ending. Listening to the Thunder. Brought him back to a very special time in his life. As always Ty.

This is a story of how it was from mid fifties to late seventies . This is how we had to roll , cause taking your girl up to your room was as taboo as the thoughts you had in your head ! Parking under the full moon , going to the drive-in and have to leave before the second movie got half way through , to get your girl home , before her dad came looking for you . Great times and so innocent learning without any clues . Good job guys !

He can not only Story tell like no other, he at the same time can write something that takes us ALL back (personally), to our own pasts. I think that is what makes him so Universally Loved.
He is the voice that lets us relieve OUR pasts on such a deep and emotional level once again.
TY Bob ... ty for the memories.

For me this was a song of life. As a youngster finding out about love and loving. Being carefree and living life as fully as possible. When he sings about Autumn closing in it’s about getting older into our golden years and remembering what once was. When you’re old all we have are the sweet memories. And we smile to ourselves that our loving can not be forgotten because it’s deep in our hearts. Even now, near the end, it’s a wonder how the night moves.
