This is the greatest, most personal song ever written about being a "star" on tour with a band. Generations of "stars" have said it...not just my opinion.
Anyone who is a musician or in a band can relate to this song so easily about the grind it is being on the road going from place to place.
I’m not a musician and I always thought that I could relate to this.
Definitely the most personal one, but my favorite "road/tour song is wasted years.
It's really popular with truckers as well, for obvious reasons.

The song is literally about his early experience on the road as a musician. The lines "as we walk into the restaurant all strung out from the road, you can feel the eyes upon you...is that a woman or a man?" was the inspiration. The band stopped at a restaurant in a small town, late for food and being long-haired rockers, they were discriminated against and practically refused service. So as soon as they got back on the bus, Bob wrote this song about the experience. When his career started, long hair on men was seen as a hippie or unwelcome, a troublemaker.
Interesting how younger people don't seem to get the stuff about long hair and the response it produced in some people back in the day. I certainly remember it well.

I remember being a kid in the 70's and he would throw free concerts down at Lansings riverfront, then a few hours later you would see him buying beer at Quality Dairy. Nobody even crowding him, people would see him at the store and say "Hey Bob."

This song PERFECTLY sums up what it is like to have a career that involves massive amounts of traveling. Trucking, shipping, plane pilots, military, sales, basically ANYTHING where you must take long trips that tend to "blend into each other" over time.
Turn the page: Wake, shower, eat, sh*t and go through it all (yet again) for the day, eat, sleep. No real difference, nothing really makes a "day memorable", just small "moments of time" that pass without notice until later in life. Memories of no home, no real family connections, no friends to share things with..... Just the long, never-ending road and cycle of daily routines with the occasional "moment".
Been there, done that. Eight miles a minute most of my life.
Some people call that refuge from what is called a "life" today. I know people whom i see like once in 15 years and it usually in Vegas. My next door neighbor is a plot and bought a home but is never there. It was a money move.

Bob is a great story-teller. His songs tend to open a door into his soul and let you get a brief but personal glimpse into the man.
In Brad’s scenario about retirement, it would be the end of a book or maybe a chapter. But in the song, he’s simply turning a page. Page after page. It’s the monotony of being on the road. Same old, same old. The day to day grind. Not a new chapter or new beginning.

A brilliant part of the song is the way the music mirrors what’s happening in the story that lies within the lyrics.
It begins with this loud saxophone riff because he’s on stage. Then, the music turns to this beat that sounds like a tour bus lugging down the highway (“You can listen to the engine moaning out his one note song”). The bass continues throughout the song with the same monotonous notes, reflecting the lyrics.
At the end of the song, the same sax riff from the beginning swells back up because he’s back on stage. His vocals also start belting out the notes near the end because, “There I am, up on the stage!”
We are see him on stage briefly at the beginning, then on the road for the whole song (because that’s what the song is about), and we see him briefly on stage at the end. And, the music accurately reflects this.
They also briefly give us the sax around the 3:14 mark because the lyrics reference, “the music that you play.”
Well executed.
Anyone who's ever been in a band touring will tell you that it doesn't take long for the days to blend into each other, as well as the towns and clubs to the point where it all becomes a blur.

Growing up in SW Michigan, with a neighbor from Detroit, I was introduced to Motown. Seeger, Alice Copper, Grand Funk Railroad were soon to follow. It was required to love these bands along with Vernor's Ginger Ale to maintain citizenship in the state.

I saw him live a bunch of times, including his last ever show in Detroit--his hometown. He was bringing it hard for 50 years. Pick any Bob Seger song, you'll never be disappointed.

There’s something about that 70s Detroit sound that makes your hair stand straight up.
Bob is a great song writer. Turn the Page is saying he is turning the page to the next day and its all the same thing when you are on the road all the time. His lyrics paint a picture that you can see with your mind's eye and feel like you were there. He has had many great hits: We've Got Tonight, Night Moves, Still the Same, Against the Wind........just to name a few. The video for Night Moves stars Courtney Cox and Matthew LeBlanc from the TV series " Friends ".
I saw Bob Seger the most times live as I did with David Bowie and Rush. Three completely different bands and sounds but each one riveting to me. Bob is classic Rock all the way. He’s middle America. His raspy accents and his musical ballads and lyrical stories are many. Check out some of his other stuff as well. If you like more intimate lyrics about small town life then this is for you. And oh yeah there’s a perfectly placed saxophone completes the picture. Life on the road as a musician. There’s the fantasy and there is the reality. Hotel rooms, long trips from one venue to another. Back then he had long hair and I can confirm from having long hair how people used to react in a diner on the highway in the 60s and 70s. People said stuff about you loud enough so you could here it. It got tense sometime. You dare not get into a fight because they always had a posse who could jump in at anytime. To me this performance is impeccable. AND ITS LIVE!!! I forgot it was live because the quality of his voice and the band is so perfect you would think this a studio version except for the audience at the end. Wow!!

Thank you Lex, you described this song perfectly as INTIMATE. Seger really puts you in his shoes with the lyrics. Metallica does a good cover, but doesn't feel nearly as INTIMATE.

I used to work at a studio in LA with the keyboard player from this band who helped write the song. It was written in the back of a U-Haul before they had really made it, slugging it out in dive bars across the midwest, sleeping in the van, freezing, getting in fights over their long hair, in a time and place where it was a real issue. You can't write, sing or play music like this unless the dues are paid in full up front.
Bob Seger was a down to earth song writer. He doesn't try to hype nothing, or show off. He just says it like is. That's why it seems so close and personal. This is Bob telling you his story.
You have a lot of catching up to do with Bob Seger, he's a true timeless classic. Also, if you're looking for a modern cover, Lex, look no further than one of your favorites, Metallica. That cover is worth a listen, for sure.

Metallica's cover of this song is amazing as well. And the video, with ex-porn star Ginger Lynn Allen as a travelling stripper, hits pretty hard emotionally as well. I think they're both equal in terms of how much I love them. :)

I heard someone say about him that he sings every song like he may never sing again.
This song was from 1972, performed in 1975, very early in Bob's career. He was talking about being in the moment and the way it made him feel, but because there was little to nothing he could do about certain things, he learned to let it go...."Turn the Page"... get onto the next moment. Hopefully it'll be something better.
I used to play and went a long way. The internet was so far in the background at the time that we didn't think about recording performances much. We did promos or a fan would share bootlegged video recordings, but that was it. There are numerous clips from such things on my channel.
I feel this song because I've lived nearly every moment in it. I never toured on a bus, but I traveled hundreds of miles to do another show, under slept, fatigued, and just determined to put on another good show. And then, somewhere along the way, some jerk would see your long hair and start making comments about "girly men" or the like. Treat you like an idiot. Or white trash. And they don't know... they just THINK they know. We all held jobs to pay for the dream. Full time. Ran our own business and grew our product. Wrote. Recorded. Hired a crew. Started our own label. And still worked full time on an assembly line somewhere. I was a production supervisor and had 11 employees. But people... can be so stupid. it's just life in an imperfect world.

This song always reminded me of my times on the road, deployed with the military. Fly into a new country and feel everyone looking at you and a handful of your friends. Long days at work, leave exhausted and go get something to eat and drink. Go to bed and the next day... Turn the page and start all over again. Great song and a great performance by Bob Seger. Metallica did an excellent (more upbeat) cover of this song, but I prefer Seger's rendition (personally).

You summed it up, I dont think that anyone can fully understand this song until you have spent time away from home. Spent a lot of time around the world away from those I loved working 7 days a week and staying busy until night comes and your left with loneliness. If you do this to long it makes you hard inside.

@@jacklynjohnson9359 depends your taste in music. This is very Simon and Garfunkel with more chest, Metallica would get me through a 2 hour work out or 12 hour labour shift. Also covers usually state the original was very inspiring or the artists heard something they can tweak and change to make it their own. Metallica killed it. Including the song in a +30 track album dedicated to all songs that mean alot to the band or inspired them and they covered them all. "Garage Inc" highly recommend especially the song "so what"😏

Bob Seger was my first rock concert. I saw him at Cobo Arena in Detroit. It had to be around 1976. I remember when Bob and the Silver Bullet Band played this song vividly.
Cobo Arena was a small venue. Maybe seating eight to eleven thousand people. Cobo was the home arena of the Detroit Pistons. My dad took me to many Pistons games at Cobo. I had the pleasure of seeing Bob Lanier, Dave Bing, Wilt Chamberlain, Kareem Abdul Jabbar all play basketball at Cobo, but my memories revolve around the Seger concert.
The saxophone lick is still one of the most recognizable sounds in rock music. That night the stage was framed by tall speaker stacks that reached all the way up to the third tier. (Tier C as it was known.) Then all of the spotlights focused on top of the stack on stage left. Atop the stack stood saxophone player Alto Reed ripping out the familiar intro to Turn the Page.

Hey you guys. Bob Seger the legend from Detroit. I live in Windsor across the river. I saw Bob play several times over the years. He was basically the King of the ballad and great classic rock. He is our hometown hero. His band was called the Silver Bullit band. Some bands are just really good playing live and this is one of those bands. The commercial for Ford motor company was from Bobs song “ Like a Rock.” Turn the Page is still one of my all time favourites. Cheers guys. You are a great example for the younger generation. Life has lots of challenges no matter who you are or how well off you are. But if you have a partner who sticks with you and supports you and loves you, you will find a way to endure anything that may come your way. I think this is one of the strengths of your relationship with each other. Keep up the good work that you are doing.

Bob Seger has many songs worth a listen. One of the great voices ever. Night Moves, Against the Wind, Hollywood Nights, Like a Rock, Old Time Rock and Roll, Roll Me Away, all worth the time.

This came out in 1972 and it was early is his amazing music career. His music has been in my life for 50 years, my older siblings played his music a lot. I was 7 when I first heard this done. Bob music is timeless, great songs. His musical Journey is Amazing

This is a “all mood” song. It starts off slow and by the end it’s rocking, but no matter where in the song you come in, you can put yourself into the storyline.
Live Bullet....this is one of many songs that were epic by Bob Seger from this album. Songs like "Heavy Music", show how he can get the crowd in the palm of his hands and interacting with him.
Bob Seger needs his flowers now before he's not around to get them. Dude is amazing.
He is telling the story of an entertainers life on the road. When he says turn the page. That means he has traveled to another city for another concert. He is on tour. Listen to the song again you will understand it better. This song is considered one of the best songs ever written. Love you guys.

First concert I ever saw was Seger at Pine Knob. Waited in line over night for tickets. Saw him several more times and he never disappoints…great live performer

I was actually at this concert. Well, one of the nights, anyway. There were two separate shows that they turned into a double album called “Live Bullet.” But I was definitely there the night that they recorded that portion of “Live Bullet” where Seger asked the crowd to “Take it easy down front here.” Ha! The group I was with jumped down, well, we dangled from a ledge and dropped, from the 2nd tier of seats to the main floor to reach the stage…
Before Bob Seger got popular, right about the time Live Bullet was released, he had already released about 5 albums. We in the Detroit area couldn’t understand why he wasn’t more popular.
“Turn the Page” is definitely about life as a touring musician. Seger payed a huuuuugge amount of dues before he sold 10 billion albums. But he wasn’t bitter about it. Another reason, as if I needed one, to love the guy.
He probably didn't join "the Club" that others did to become famous.😉

I met Bob, back in 94 or 5. Me a few coworkers went to Weber's Inn in Ann Arbor and he happened to be there. We talked to him for a good half hour or more and he bought us a round of drinks. Super nice guy
This is the live version off of the Live Bullet album. You should check out the studio version from the Back in 72 album, to me, a much better mix.

Yeah, this was from Live Bullet, but it was actually recorded at Cobo Hall.
It was at Cobo Hall and my third concert I ever went to. And probably the best I've ever seen. The whole live bullet album is awesome.

Lex nailed it. Perfect description. Bob is a soulful dude. Grew up with him, Marvin, and countless other soulful bluesy legends.
That is a simple song as far as chord progression etc, but Seger's voice and phrasing send it over the top. And the sax is icing on the cake.
The man can sing and write a helluva song.
Loved Lex's reaction to that one part near the end. And enjoyed watching Brad kick back, and soak it all in.
Musicians write lots of songs about life on the road, and they're usually pretty good. This one is no exception.
It's a great song about living life on the road as a musician. Another great one from that era is by Jackson Brown called "The Loadout/ Stay" you'd probably enjoy that as well.
Bob is a real storyteller, just AMAZING. And the Sax in his band, I ALWAYS loved that sound!
Bob Seger's song The Famous Final Scene helped me immensely after my Mom passed. The man's a legend. So many good songs... and Metallica covered this one, guys. ;)

This is my favorite song of all times, it is him telling what it's like to be on the road and it's not fun and games, with all the traveling, set up for concerts, tearing down the stage and loading the trucks up to travel to the next concert. That saxophone kills me every time, love it. I think he just recently retired. Love me some Bob Seger. ❤ He has a whole lot of great songs to rock to, you should check out some more Bob Seger!
I’ve never seen Brad kick back and settle in like that! And the whole time a huge smile on his face. That’s kind of song is this though. You just let it flow over you and you just take it in. One of Bob’s best.
Every time I listen to this song - it reminds me of my time in the Marines - On the stage = contact with the enemy - In the spotlight = inspections - on the road again = moving town to town or contact to contact. - love the song and also the cover by Metallica too
Bob Seger's ballad, "Up On Main Street" is as beautiful and evocative as a Rock ballad can get. I recommend it for a double-bill with "Avenue A", a Red Rider song written by Tom Cochrane, one of the best songwriters of the 1980s and 90s. It's from the same album as their big hit, "Lunatic Fringe".
That song actually makes me cry every time I hear it. The yearning in his voice as he sings about the “long and lovely dancer” makes me think she must’ve been a real unrequited love for the writer.
Turn the page means he knows he's going to do it again. It's life on the the road.

I heard that Bob Seger has been known to bring his acoustic guitar with him when he goes for a few beers to a small local country bar. That's got to be pretty amazing for the handful of people that are lucky enough to just happen to be there..

This was LIVE. .. I don't even know if they even bothered releasing a studio version, because the Live version is so damn good.
there is the studio version but it's one of those songs where the live version trumps the studio version on the radio. Same with Do You Feel Like I Do by Frampton. You only here the live version because they are so awesome.
Metallica has a nice cover of this. It would be great to watch your reaction to that one as well.
I saw Seger live 5 times in the 70s and 80s. The man was incredible and every show he put on was great. Used to run a 1978 Z-28 Camaro full throttle to him in the Colorado mountains with a blonde beside me!

This is one of the greatest Rock songs of all time. (I may be biased, because Seger was a local guy.) That second verse gets me every time.
And no, Chris Cornell never covered this song, to my knowledge. But Metallica turned out a beautiful version, around 2000 or so.

Yeah, it could be interpreted as a "retirement"/ looking back song - though it was done relatively early in his career, at the height of it, so it's more of a "lather, rinse, repeat"/turn-the-page-start-it-all-over-again type thing (the repetition of life on the road). Oh and for the youngsters, the "is it a woman or a man" thing refers back to the late 60s through the 70s where young long haired rocker type guys got the "well are you a girl" stuff thrown at them by older generations.
Lex has it right. Truckers love this song. 2am on the road, complete darkness, out in the middle of nowhere AZ . You feel this song so much.
