Knife making - Forging A Knife From An Old File
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 5 окт 2016
- After making a knife by stock removal, I forged another one from an old file. And I enjoyed it. This is a very interesting process.
First, I heated the file with a torch for the annealing process and let it cool overnight into fine sand. Then I forged the blade and the bevels by hand, quenched it in oil and ground it with my 2x72" to its final shape. When the heat treating was complete and successfull, I started working on the handle.
I used cocobolo for the that. It's a realy hard exotic wood and the grain is beautiful. The pins are 8mm round steel, because as the blade is quite long, I wanted to add a little bit of weight in the handle.
The blade is straight with a slightly dropping point. The balance is perfect for me, and I'm quite happy with out it turned out.

Thank you for you kind words and thanks for watching!
Really nice work man! Now looks very neat, love it.
Thank you ! ;)
Superb work mate! Great to see the smithy and grinder are being put to good use again i bet they saved you tons of time in the progress. Cheers
Thanks my friend ! The grinder saved me a looot of time indeed. I really admire the ones who do it by hand with only files and rasps. It's real hard work. ;)
nice work -
Thanks Jimi !

Waow ! That's a big challenge ;)
Thank you !!
nice work
+HNIZAR45 Thank you 😊
That's purdy!
Thanks 😊
Great work sir how big are those pins? I love how they stand out I just bought some 8mm stock to use as pins and I hope they are as prominent as yours. Keep em coming 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Thank you very much ! These are 8mm steel pins. I wanted to had a little bit of weight as the blade is quite long and heavy. I will mate, thanks again !
The Redsmith ah cool thanks I'm looking forward to using my new 8mm pins now they gunna look so cool 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Sure they will !! ;)
very.good
Thank you very much ! :)
YEAH BUDDY!!!!!
Thanks Lonnie ! Happy you like it !!
Sick!
Thanks a lot ;)

Muchas gracias ! :)
Well done. One day I'll make me a forge
Thank you ! That's what I said to myself for about a year. Then I found an anvil. Then I build my forge. You don't need much to do it. Save few bucks, buy an anvil and a hammer and get started ! 😊
This is great, subscibed
Thank you and welcome aboard. :)
A word of advice for anyone making a file knife. Most files are shal/ow hardening (water hardening) steels. I have only ever gotten decent heat treat results from an interrupted brine quench, 99% of the time straight oil hardening will not cut it on all but the thinnest blades.
Thanks for the advice. I quenched in oil and the hardening was good. I will try with water next time. Thanks for watching.
it was a good vid mate. Of course all files are different so it is advisable to try to oil quench first before the brine quench as brine quenching is about the scariest thing you can do to a knife.
I found one of these half finished in an old rusty box of tools I bought. I really need to finish it!
Please do!
Nice! Why did you need to anneal it before sticking it in the forge? I understand annealing before grinding or drilling it.
Thank you ! Annealing enables to work with a softer material. It's easier to shape or drill before the heat treating.
Me again :) quick question. isnt tha metal in a file too hard and brittle to be used as a knife? I know I've dropped files and they shatter.
No problem. As long as you properly anneal quench and temper your file, you're good to go.
great video and great project👍 I like that you left a little bit of the character from the file on the top, if you left a little more though it could have been a knife that could sharpen knives 😁
dirty Mushroom - Holly Bubba Thanks a lot. Yes indeed. Will do that with the next one 😉
The Redsmith cool cool. I subscribe to your channel already but want to make sure my notifications are on so I'll know when you send that one out👍
dirty Mushroom - Holly Bubba I usually release a new video every saturday (friday for my patrons). But with the notifications it's safer 😊
The Redsmith awesome .I appreciate you man . Keep up the good work. very inspirational👍
dirty Mushroom - Holly Bubba Thank you so much
Aah d'accord, merci d'avoir repondu !
De rien ! :)
Merci !
Why did you take the tang off?
Did you just mill with a drill bit?
You have some awesome gear!!!!
Because the knife would have been too long.
Mill ? No, but I drill two holes for the pins yes.
Thanks a lot ;)
The Redsmith lol should have been watching.. of course only two holes.
Great work :)
Thank you very much ! I really appreciate it :)
Hello again sir... If I were to send you an old file I have that was my great grandfathers, would you offer services?
Hello again, yes I could. But I live in France. If you could send me an email (theredsmith@hotmail.com) so we can discuss the details.
la red de herreros ... uhhuuuhuhuhuhuhuhu¡¡¡
herrero principiante :)
Bon courage !
What type of oil did you quench in?
It's old motor oil. Thanks for watching.
The Redsmith thanks, and anytime!
where did you buy ur belt grinder?
tristy-popstheman I made it. Check my previous videos.
👍👌⚔🤠
I have a question. what is the fluid (when 2:00 in video)?
It's motor oil :)
No worries ;)
Depending on the metal, you can quench in oil or water for the hardening. Motor oil works great and is very cheap. You can also buy quenching oil or else, but that's what I had laying around :)
Thanks for answer again. I appreciate it.
I learned through Google search. When quenching, we use quenching oil not water. So I deleted the second question.
And, I found that quenching oil is expensive.
Anyway, I learned from you. Motor oil can be used when quenching.
it gave to me hope that i can do forging.
thanks you!!
Yes, I saw that. No worries at all. Always happy to help ! Hope you can forge too ;)
101th like :D
Coool ! Thanks ;)
What’s the point of putting the blade in the oven? I’ve seen that on nearly every knife making video
It's called tempering the blade. After the quench, the blade is very hard but also very brittle. Tempering it will make is a little bit less hard but also more resistant and less breakable.
What that name of sand for Cooling the file ?
It's just regular sand, but you can also use ashes or even better vermiculate. :)
Please what kind of belt sander please
I made it myself. Thanks for watching!
Red Smith.todo muy bueno.pero taladrar un hierro forjado sosteniéndolo con la mano izquierda sin guante?.very.very bad.sorry.good day.😁😷👍
Tienes toda la razón, debería haber usado guantes :) ¡Seguridad primero! ¡Gracias por ver!
If possible, plz dont add music coz it takes away the real fun of watching a creation.
Sorry but that's how I make videos. With music. Sometimes I keep the sound of the tools as well though.
слишком просто, нет оригинальности.
Thanks for watching.
