- Knife making - Make a knife With an angle grinder and basic hand tools.
Knife making doesn't require a lot of fancy or expensive tools.
I made this knife with nothing but an angle grinder a drill (not necessary ) and some basic hand tools.

iron thickness is 0.508 cm?
stanciu gabi that was steel. iron is not good enough.
great work.
Hey man can u send me a link a page of that template to print thanks
Nice job man, and zero knife technique snobbery. I like that. 😀
As long as it works😀 Thanks for watching my friend!
@@OUTDOORS55 what inch blade do you prefer.
what a ugly piece of steel
@@smokinjoe1256 your right, but he turned it into a beautiful knife so that's a win
@@McGowanForge i meant the knife...because its a ugly knife.
I thought for sure you shot the arm shaving clip BEFORE beating it through that wood.. Then you blew my mind 🤯 Outstanding!!
FYI... after hanging out with with some amazing RUclipsrs this past weekend, know that your knife making videos have inspired a TON of folks to start making their own creations!!! Your talent and gift is far reaching brother!!! Keep on crafting your art!!! 🖒
I really wish I could have been there! I had wedding stuff to do for my brother. We have to meet up at some point 😀 it looked like so much fun! Thanks man!
i was inspired and am i the works of my first knife making process
@@OUTDOORS55 what kind of steel is in a metal bed frame. I have made knife s from them and they get very sharp .
Nicely done! That mirror finish does do a couple things for the blade... For one, it slides through whatever you're cutting with less resistance making it cut MUCH better! Second is RUST! Rust only likes to form in pits in the metal, the mirror polish has very few if any pits so it's very rust resistant.
So refreshing to have someone on RUclips who actually makes something we can all have a go at no fancy machines needed ...thanks
Agreed.
One of the best videos I seen dealing with the basics. I am just getting started with knife making and think your instructions were spot on and easy to follow. Great job, thanks!
You've convinced me to finally start making knives
That mirror polish is amazing!
Thanks! It did come out nice😀
Clogging
Your sharping skills are awsome
The best video available on “how to”.
Alex, your videos are just amazing. You're a good teacher, a good communicator, and a good smith.
Wow, that was impressive! Man what a shine on that blade, plus held a razor edge after a pounding workout. Thanks for sharing this.
Its still sharp! That convex grind is a thing of beauty😀
Thank you Alex , after watching quite a few " other " vlogs , I was still having misgivings as to how simple this could be . You have proven to me that it's only as hard as you make it on your self .
Such is life, ey?
That is a super badass build. Love the final look and the performance is superb. Also a big fan of convex grinds for toughness. 👍
You covered every step specific to grinder stock removal; steps I missed when I tried it! Thanks for the great vid!
Beautiful knife. Definitely something for Kali or Eskrima demos! Love it!
Excellent instructional video. This the second video I have watched on this channel and I was impressed enough to subscribe. Thank you for the knowledge I gained.
As always, excellent video. I appreciate the fact that you used just the grinder to make the knife because I don't have the money right now to buy the more expensive tools at this point. But I do have a paint can forge, grinder, drill press, and canola oil. Keep making the videos on the layman level. Great work.
That turned on incredible
The danger music when u talk about power tool safety was a nice touch
This is pretty cool, didn't know such a good looking knife could be made with such basic tools. I'm going to give this a shot! Keep up the good work!
Still alive there Vinny? 😅
@@R34L157 haha yeah. Haven't tried it yet... building myself a workbench first
DAMN AWESOME JOB MAN
Thanks man!
learned a lot about the tempering and heat treating. dig the magnet trick. cool video dude!
Beautiful! This video makes me think I could actually do this. Thank you.
this makes me wanna go chop some wood!!!!! this is epic, i love the dramatic music during the angle grinder warning lol. ur knife is GORGEOUS!
Because of this video angle grinders are now banned in the U.K
You're so funny haha...
But no.
They banned steel 😂😂😂
wait really
It is cute that you think this video is legal to watch in the UK, without a license that is.
@@chrisc4239 What is a license? Is that like a loicense?
7784000 Alec Steele... that’s why he moved to Montana.
Annnnd now I'm going to find some steel and make a kitchen knife lol. Looks like a ton of fun!!
This is the best video on youtube about knife making using basic tools. Very informative yet straight to the point. Very nice!
Wow! That knife is a work of art! I recently came across your channel and I’m thankful I did... I especially appreciate how you convey your (extensive) knowledge in a way that can be easily understood by beginners, like me!! I have NO DOUBT you have large following that loves your work as much as I do!! Keep doin what you’re doin!!!
Thanks my friend! 😀👍
Alex, this video is excellent. I watch alot of knife making, and your is outstanding! Yes I just subscribed!
Thanks my friend! I really appreciate the sub! Thanks for watching 😀
That’s a great looking knife brother!!
Just wanted to say. Thank you .
You got me started in this hobby.
I watched this video last year and since then I have bought and or made tools to have a nice start in making knives . I tried to forge a spike over the winter but my hand crank blower from 1902, One of the bearings came loose right when a spike was just getting hot enough to start moving the steel , the 400 champion blower stopped turning..
Justin ,north Dakota
You make it look easy Alex🖒. Very nice job with minimal tools! Wade
Thanks man!
THANK you very much,,,show the sanding so nice.
Your Video was a big help for me.
Regards from Germany.👍🏼
This video was brilliant. Thanks for all the tempering detail.
Well done And clear explanations specially regarding the heat treatment 👍👌👏👏👏👊✌️
Thanks! Ill probably do a heat treatment video soon with more detail. Thanks for watching!😀
👱🏿♀️👱🏿♂️
I was going to start with an old carving knife, but now know it will have been hardened in the factory,so hard work to sand,etc..need to buy some steel bar..🤔great video mate..TY
Grinders are the sketchiest tools known to man
idk man, they're pretty balanced; I mean, i used to have 11 fingers.
yeah...you're gonna want to tuck in that shirt tail. don't ask me how I know.
I legit stop every 4 mins to make sure the wheel is tight lol
Table saws are far more dangerous than an angle grinder I’d say
no, your the sketchiest tool known to man.
sorry, i had to
The abrasives breakdown was very, very helpful. Thank you.
Wow that knife is beautiful
3:46 The clamp with the wooden handle is running away 😂😂
Lol!

"DANGEROUS GRINDER!!! AAHHHH!!!"
Wow this is one of the most amazing video i've ever seen,, so good and clear explanation,, thanks for sharing,, good job,, i want to watch all your videos,, one more thing can you include on how you wrap the rope in the knife handle?? Thanks man
I totally agree with you! This is awesome!
Zombie Apocalypse Approved 😎
He literally says he is "just winging" it with the wrap and that there are already better videos out there.
Thanks for this. I've seen a crap loaf of knife making videos but this one is in my top 5 for sure. This is going to be my first knife.
Tks for this video!
Very important tip for house making knife!
Congrats!
you can do the minosharp 3 ??
Very nice. I have been tipping my toe into blacksmithing and think this is a much easier way to do a knife.
Also, do you have a site that I could download that template?
Awesome job!!! Thank you!!
Found my new quarantine hobby. Thanks so much for the video!
One of these days I'm going to get off my lazy ass and try it. I'm addicted to guns & knives. Always wanted to try. Never been good with freehand sharpen i use lanskey kit.
Would a butane (a type of heating/cooking gas) flame be able to heat treat the steel
yes but you would need more than one torch to heat the entire blade to red you would run into the issue of having an uneven heat but for tempering one torch is plenty
Use map gas. Gets hotter and last longer
Another great design, execution, instruction, video, and editing! Thank you
Brilliant friend it's more than adequate............
The best grinders in the world are the worst welders on earth. :D
Thank God I suck at both.
Ego loves a critic lol
I've been guilty of such.
I've learned so much, far much more from RUclips videos than school and college.
Skills they just don't teach you and you need.
Use the tools we have or can borrow to get the job done.
I even learned locksmithing and making my own picks.
Also hydroponic growing before it was cool in college and school.
Locksmiths are a majority of rip off merchants, destroying the locks and replacing them when they could have just picked them.
Even safes are simple to open if someone asked me.
Not for crime!
That's hilarious
LOL@ keep the sparks out of your face >.< ..also sad you needed to have a PSA scroll at the bottom but in this day and age, its a must for the dopes. You definitely make it look way to easy Alex but then again it's clearly not rocket science. What a great looking chopper man and the editing is awesome, loved the quenching instant replay graphics :D
Haha I was worried that if I didn't do the "instant replay" someone would think I quenched it twice. It did turn out nicer than I expected. Taking it to the woods today to do some real testing! Thanks for watching Kevin👍
OUTSTANDING!
Nice design and good presentation.
7 inch grinder all the way, it won’t overheat.
10:05 What in the 80's porn are you listening to?
he said now lets se what it can do
wow!!!cool piece of art!
Best video I've seen yet , answered all questions I had. Very nice knife. Thanks for the knowledge.
I was pondering making my own knives last year, but I saw all these people with $20k+ worth of tools and equipment, I decided not to. Now I see it can be done $200 max to get started. Guess I'll have to look into it again
I start knife making with file, angle grinder, clamp, cans, tang, vegetable oil, charcoal and vaccum cleaner. (:
@@apaiya8159 hey why the vacuum cleaner bud..?
@@abhisheksakharkar2098 for making the coals hot enough to make the steel hot enough to be able to be hardened
$10-15 Harbor Freight grinder, some oil for quenching, and a place to start a fire. Get some scrap steel somewhere and you are good to go! Less than $20 all in. Work your way up from there.
When you Trace the design of your knife into the steel you can use spray paint and just spray all the way around the knife design in the paper.
The best video i have seen so far on knife making...very educative!!!
Wow! Love it!
Table saw is nr.1 dangerous tool. Many of human fingers have been lost to ge danğourus machien.
Idiots fingers were lost
until you realize the consequences of a wheel breaking on an unshielded angle grinder
@FrogZ suggest reinforced wheels to your manager because I can smell someone cheaping out which is not good if you do heavy work
I can vouch for the danger of a table saw. My left hand is missing a couple of fingers. When fingers and saw blades meet, the blade will always win. Use the safety equipment always, and be careful!
@@gavinm8669 I'm no idiot. I am much wiser now.
How long is it
How long is it from the end of the handle to the start of the blade. And then how long is the blade.
And whats the width of the knife.
Really awesome inspiring stuff! Really glad you shared this! Clear and concise explanation of the process. Great job!
Awesome job!
Bravooooo, ful respect for the work , product and video, masterclass's, from old BG.
Have watched it at least 5 times. Awesome tutorial man! Thanks for the guidance!
Thats beautiful man
I've watched so many of your videos in the last month or so trying to learn as much as possible before I took the plunge. I bought a good bit of tooling as my birthday present to myself this week and started on an old file. I'll be building my forge this weekend and got an email notification my 4 ft bar of 1080 is out for delivery. I'm jazzed and I appreciate all the information!
Thank you for the video. I can't wait to try.
Outstanding!
Wow! Incredible skills, thanks for sharing.
That's Talent!!
Thx for sharing 😃
