- Knife making, how to make a machete with an angle grinder and basic hand tools.
In this video I show just how easy it can be to make a knife with basic tools. We do most of the knife shaping with an angle grinder. And heat treat it in a camp fire and kitchen oven. This is a very easy knife making project that can be completed in a day. And you will have a knife that will chop through anything!
The steel that is used is the most important part of this project. 1080 and 1084 are the best steel for beginner knife makers. They are the easiest steel to heat treat for beginner knife makers.

Sorry for the re-upload! RUclips is screwy today and a lot of people were having trouble viewing the old up-load. Hopefully this one is better!🤞 Sometimes RUclips does this kind of stuff😩 Thank you for taking the time to watch! Its Always appreciated!!
OUTDOORS55 What company did you buy the steel from?
can you make a video on how you would make a cyclone
That's ok, I just liked it twice :)
It was worth it to see the grammatical error in the intro fixed. You're welcome.
Yeah I figured if i had to re upload I might as well fix it😂
Glad to see you still have all your fingers.
The best video about knife making I've ever seen. It shows how to make a usable knife using simple tools. I appreciate the US-Boys for that: they don't talk around for long, they just do it. Many greetings from Germany to my American Friends! 🇩🇪 🇺🇸
Thank you Alex. Another great video. My son and I are going to try our hand at making a blade using your techniques. Just got our first delivery of 1080 today. Keep 'em coming!
Awesome! It will be fun no matter what! Thanks my friend!
@@OUTDOORS55 Hi Alex. I want to try bringing out some textures using ferric chloride. How long do you need to keep the steel (1080) in the acid to get a nice result?
Brian Mansfield the longer it is in the acid the more it will pop
@@brianwiggins2169 Thanks. But is there a minimum amount of time you should shoot for?
Brian Mansfield in about 30 minutes you will get good results but the longer the better. You can really just keep checking back and forth until you get to where you want
Wow I feel pretty, I’ll just skip that part ! 🤪 I’m so glad you did this video because I bought some, but haven’t used it . I live in Mobile, Al and I haven’t been able to find any place to get knife making material . I’ve heard using leave springs . What do you think 🤔? And glad you did you wood fire so I know I can do this too ! Anything you can share I would appreciate ! Thanks for sharing keep up the good work young man ! Oh by the way I’m a 60 year young wanting to learn ! Who said you can’t teach an old dog new tricks ! LoL Have a great day !
It's Fugly, but it CUTS. It cuts pretty well, in fact. A good, compact chopper. NICE!
Alex you never cease to amaze and amuse me. 😂😂😂👍👍👍
Lol😂 Thanks for watching my friend! Always appreciate it👊
Absolutely freaking awesome!!!!
I feel like I am in my Dad’s shop all over again. He was an Iron Smith. He made some Machetes too. Great memories. Thank You Alex
Ive yet to see anyone using Macaulay Culkin as a quench oil, and until such time will argue that doing so will have potential benefits until proven otherwise. 😆
It might work🤷♂️ I just dont want to be the one to try it for the first time😂
I love every single minute of this video. Thank you so very much. Keep up the creation and destruction!
This was incredible. And i don't feel so intimidated by trying to make a knife. That all seems relatively straight forward.
Ace. I love the safety glasses drop near the end. Thanks!
Looks like a fun one day project, I'm going to have to try that!
This video is perfect
Great video, would love to see you do one just like this but with the focus on making the handle, not the para-cord.. Thanks so much for the great content!!
Nice! You make a thing as well as an awesome video production too, most of us struggle to do just one of those!
Haha thanks man! I try😀 Thanks for watching👊
Bahahaha!!!!!
Best video ever!!!!
Nailed it!!💥👊🏼👊🏼💥💯❤️
Electrical tape and a magnet taped to a 1/2" dowel worked for me
Great informative build! I didn't see the end montage coming but it cracked me up. Keep inspiring and keep having fun!
Thanks my friend! Ill try😀!
Hello, Alex. Thanks for this video of “knife-making for dummies”. This makes it very tempting to have a go at it. Will let you know if/when i do. Thumbs up all the way. 👍
The part at the end where you chop stuff is awesome!!!!!
Wow, what a beast of a knife, especially since you could make this in a day or two.
Excelent
Iiii liiike iiit !! 😁🙏😆👍🏻👍🏻
I like the size, the design, the material!
I like the easy to handle and cheap tools and the short production time.
This is my 3. video, and i like them all.
Your videos are entertaining, funny, informative and get to the point.
Keep it up.👍🏻👍🏻
Best regards from Europe.
I love this, and I’m inspired. I have to try this
As a fella that makes knives I'll say that this is an awesome video for folk looking to make a knife! Good job man!
Happy this got re-uploaded like that u keep things simple and explain for the newbies.
I am really inspired by your videos and really want to start making some knives.
I love the humor in your videos bro!!
And the “knifchete “ looks and performs great. Thank you for sharing!!
I always wanted to make a machete in this manner! That is an amazing job man! Love it!👍👍👍
Yes! Old school Alex! Lots of great information in this awesome video. Thank you. 👍🏼
Thanks my friend!👊
That was impressive. Of course one can choose between edge durability or extreme sharpness, but that has a nice balance. It can definitely chop through wood.
New shop looks huge!
Its getting smaller by the day! I need to stop moving stuff in😂
Bookmarked. I want to make one like that but with a wooden handle. Great video.
I’m looking forward to making one now
A really great design that really lends itself to a very sharp blade
You got me with the chopped glove part.. 😯
Omg. I will be attempting this. Thank you so much!!
great fun to watch and fun to do!
love your sense of humor! :DDD
i dont like big knives, but i LOVE your big knife videos!
Awesome video! Interesting, informative, and even funny. Thank you for making learning fun.
I think it is awesome looking.....my favorite finish. Thank's for the time you took to do it. I really like that pattern......I have been wanting to do a big knife like that but am still developing my skills. One day soon maybe when I get a better forge setup. I could make it the way you did with 1084 but I might wait for a slightly better forge this spring with an electric fan at least....awesome pattern. I do love re curves.
Another potential turd of a day made tolerable by the
whimsical wit and wisdom of Big Al. Thank you, good sir.
Really loving your videos. Keep up the great work.
"Use your head. Don't be dead" I love That!!!!!
Great video. New shop will be lotta fun.
always fun to watch these
Damn slim shady realy be teaching us how to make knives. Jokes aside thanks i want to start making my own knives👍
Fantastic!
good method and simple for heat treating. I used charcoal barbecue coals. I have a portable band saw jury rigged vertical and it cuts the steel like butter and steel does not get hot at all
Love it
You are awesome Alex love the video
Down and dirty and in a day, hard to beat, might give it a shot one of these days.
Yet again, another great video! The only thing I would have added was a file test after quench to show that the blade is actually hard before tempering. I'm going to try this and see how well it goes! Thanks for the inspiration.
@Christian use a file to test the hardness.
You're the man! Great advise on new makers starting with 1084. I still use it almost exclusively so that I can confidently HT my own blades. I get mine from NJ steel baron as well! That thing is a beast!
Its not pretty but it works 🤷♂️😂 Thanks man! 👍👊👊
Yeah dude cool video man, short sweet and to the point. Nice chopper.
This is a great video. My favorite knife making video of all time was a series from green pete years ago. I cant even find it any more but this reminds me of that video. Well...kind of:) Another great one Alex. Good to see some work happening in the new shop. Im excited to see it in full swing, and collaborate.
Just wanted to say, I really enjoy your channel!
Love the information thank you
I built a forge out of an old BBQ grill that I modified for air and used a shop vac on reverse for the forced air. Works great.
really nice knife and surely durable!
Good thing I work in a industry I can bring all the scrap of that kind of steel home
this looks amazing
WELL DONE
Super useful, thank you
Yup. Great video. C'mon kids, I know what we are going to do today!
I think i might need one of these in my life :-)
I like just how that nice big chopper cam out to be and i do like the look and it looks like you crazy sharpen. But thanks for this video keep cool and ✌.
Great video man! Excellent tutorial!
everybody has a little bit of ColdSteel in them... be a dreamer!
This guy deserves more subs and viewers
Awesome
Almost as good as the other one !!!
Lol hopefully it's better! 😂
Super awesome video, thanks!
It's the best channel I'm subscribed to

Haha thanks my friend!
Hey that machete is really badass! Good job!
Thanks my friend!
I need to make this but damascus.
Might take a million tries but its something i want to try and maybe do in the future.
Awesome video. Inspired me to try this. Thanks for uploading.
Awesome bud
Excellent!!!!
THanks! And thanks for watching!
Now that is a knife 🔪 👍 cool video
Awesome video dude thanks for the video
Great job ✨
Thank you so much
Insulated walls?!? Well aren't you a man of luxury in your new shop :D
Lol. I prefer it to be uninsulated. It will be hot enough in there with a forge going😂
As always 👍
Great 👍🏻
Круто друг! 👍👍👍
Theres gonna be people here saying they accidentally bought a graphics card with a name of type of steel
evga 1070 carbon steel ti ftw
That was brilliant 😂🤣 👌
this vid saved me a lot of time when quenching. i can just use canola oil rather than spending 8 hours spitting in the quench tank. thanks!
macaulay culkin. That had me in stitches. Great vid. Thank you.
What’s that?
Jeff Hubbs oh wait nvm
Cool! Sub from Portugal dude!
nice blade!
Awesome video!! 👍
