Hi, Im Alex, im a knife maker and RUclipsr, based out of southern Pennsylvania and my youtube channel is Outdoors55. I'm a simple man. I see an outdoors55 knife making video, I press like... And double check that I'm subbed.
and joined 😎
I dig it. I've been stuck in this *"Unless you're forging your steel this isn't knife making"* rut lately. I made a quick knife recently using finished steel like this, and was martyred on the forums by knife makers espousing *"UNLESS YOU'RE FORGING YOUR STEEL, YOU'RE NOT A REAL KNIFE MAKER!"* I'm not a knife maker, I'm just guy that makes a few dozen knives a year out of boredom. I wonder if that logic extends to procuring, and smelting ore as well? Regardless, I dislike how elitist the community has become.
Gatekeeping sucks. I've gotten some myself in my own hobby because I use 3D printing. Keep doing what you enjoy and try to ignore the nay sayers.
Yeah its silly. You can make a really bad knife using both methods (ive made a couple myself 😬). So I guess the wood worker has to grow the trees as well🙄 Most of the forum's are full of a lot of "faceless opinions" that just don't matter. The worst thing you can do is start caring what other people think and basing what you make on someone who doesn't give a crap. Do what you like, and make what you like 👍
Unless you procure and mix your own pigments and binders and weave your own canvas and craft your own brushes from your hair, YOU'RE NOT A REAL PAINTER.
Listen brother, don’t listen to all those posers. What is this “procuring” stuff all about? Get a shovel, pick and helmet. If you aren’t _mining_ your own ore you aren’t really knife making. Also, if you are going to use electricity anywhere in the process you need to make your own. I recommend hooking up an exercise bike to a generator.
EXACTLY, I quit going on Facebook groups and talking to people in person about my ideas. I felt like such a dumbass for my dumb ideas and poor thinking. I'm just going to isolate myself and nobody needs to know my failure or any triumphs/ achievements.
Man those scales! I love them. Beautiful knife.
I thought I was the only one routing my scales 😂. Love Stumpy. He learned his lesson.
I really love the autumn camo pattern on those handles! Especially given the reason you picked it hahaha ;)
I love your work. I haven't made a knife or any serious smiting work in over 30 years. I keep coming back to your comment, "Is this even wood?"
Man I just realized how much I missed your build videos 😁👍🏼✌🏼🤙🏼
More to come!👍👊
@@OUTDOORS55 about time ☝🏼🤘🏼
the chatoyancy on the kirinite is really ducking gorgeous...
Seeing the attention to detail and thorough methodology you employ in your knife making is truly inspiring. It would be a dream to own one of your bushcraft knives one day and an even more mind-blowing dream to upgrade my workshop and get to this level on crafting myself! Please keep up the great content!
Thank you! I appreciate the kind words 🙏
I wish you sold these. I'd be proud to own something like that and to pass it on to my son when he's older.
Beautiful knife.
I am soooo glad to see that it isn't just me that has that problem with those green belts !!!!
I usually roll them but one slip amd you're fumbling with the things for a minimum of 5 minutes 😂
@@OUTDOORS55 I tend to fold mine and put a weak spring clamp on them, but as ytou say, one slip.....!
Nice to have u back !
I am a butcher in Utah and I just wanted to say thank you for all your sharpening videos! They have helped me tremendously with keeping a good edge on my knives! The only questions I have are about strops and what is a good strip progression?
Hard to say. It would depend on your final stone grit. My two most used are 6 micron and 1 micron. You really dont need anything else imo
Dude, a butcher dropping a comment to say your knife sharpening videos have been really helpful is about the highest form of validation I can think of.
Where can I get a book from
I absolutely love your videos! we need a house update too
He's Back With A Vengeance.
Outstanding Work! Thanks!
The buffer heats up the scales, your right it better to buff by hand 👌
Real nice job
Nice!! It's so great that your back.
I’ve been waiting for more build videos I’m hyped
Hey thanks for the pointer on the amount of pressure when using ceramic belts.
Very nice work. Thanks for sharing this video.
Amazing how sharp you can get a knife! Sering you feather that paper made my jaw drop!
I glad you are back making knife videos...your vids are informative and excellent...just like your knives...keep up the good work!
"keyboard machinists" 🤣 love it! Right on bro, been waiting for you to get at it! 🤘
Thanks for showing the process, gorgeous piece.
Simply gorgeous knife. Love it
Very nice! I wasn't a fan of the scales, but after watching this twice, they've grown on me.
Thanks for watching! Really appreciate it🙏🙏👍
Another informative video! Thank you!
I really like that handle. Nice work!
Been a while, welcome back!
Thanks my friend 👍
Another excellent build video. Glad to see you back to building knives again. Such a great looking knife at the conclusion.👏
Wow! You have come a long way from the days of a kiln made out of cinder blocks and a torch..lol😅! That knife is a piece of art, my eyes anyway. Thanks for the video..watched the entire process and enjoyed every minute of it. Cheers Mike in Nova Scotia.
Beautiful knife that will be 100% reliable. Thanks for taking us along on your build.
Very precise information and excellent results. Nice build
Was wondering when we would see some knife making videos from you.! Enjoy watching your videos!! Beautiful work!
I always enjoy your videos. I can only imagine how much time it takes to put one together so for that we thank you. Very entertaining and educational.
I truly enjoy watching you create.
Thanks for the video, Alex.
I appreciate that!
Can’t wait to see your next project.
Excellent build quality right there fine tuned
So exited to see the knife videos back keep it up 🎉🎉
Beautiful work.
You’ve really stuck with that blade style ( grind) and understandably so. When you first made one years ago I had to copy it ( sorta) and I really love it too. That’s an awesome build 👍👍👍
Excellent work. I tried making a knife after i watched your video on making knifes without fancy tools. It came out great. Maybe just a smudge too hard. Thanks for sharing this beautiful knife. Regards /Danjel
Thanks for watching my friend!
Sweet knife!
Love it!
Good to see you back up and running in the knife game!! Can we get an update video on the house reno, the ultralight knife and the saw?
Beautiful knife. I absolutely love the scales. I always enjoy seeing your work, as you do a wonderful job of walking us through your thought process. Another great job.
Thanks appreciate it🙏👍
Alex is back! Glad to see such an interesting video. Not too abstrusely, but it's answering most common questions either. Awaiting more knife making, knife sharping videos. Best of luck!
Thank you posting this video!
Really appreciate this. Just the joy of seeing this. Love and peace. Tim
For that soft handle material you should try clear Cerakote. That stuff is marvelous and a very durable surface. It goes on like regular polish no need to heat.
Very nice, Im not that keen on that type of scale material, but I have to say that looks lovely. thank you for sharing.
Glad to see new uploads
Thanks for stopping by👍
Oh yeah, that's absolutely worth a sub! Great work, love the clear-and-concise approach to your methodology, and I'm looking forward to seeing your projects!
Appreciate it👍👊
enjoyable video. Thanks for making it.
As always, another brilliant video. You make it look so easy
Wow that looks awesome.
Great video ! I learned more in this video than I ever have. Thanks !
Love your work!
Beautiful craftsmanship, definatly a knife that will last a long time if cared for properly 1084 being not stainless but a bit of oil will keep it looking like new. A great user knife design as well. Thanks for the great vid and keep making sharp things fun and enjoyable
Gorgeous knife! Those scales are very nice!
Now you need an etching laser so you can etch the steel type and maker’s mark/logo into the blade steel. Made in America by a fine craftsman. Nice job, Tom.
Beautiful
Love your videos
Great stuff!!
Simple but a wonderful blade ! Nice work man!
Great video and work as always keep it up 👍
Thank you
Very talented! I’d be interested to see a (budget) version of making a knife. I don’t have power tools readily available and would like to learn how to make a primitive knife using primitive tools
Alex, you build some absolutely beautiful knives!!!
AWESOME STUFF!!!👍👍
Beautiful knife! Function and Form.
Great stuff.
good job !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! love it and drop point knifes
Damn looks beautiful man!
Lovely
This was excellent! I’m sure filming probably nearly doubled the time it took to actually make the knife but it was very enjoyable! I’ve always loved your commentary as well as your ability to describe things in detail and give instruction. Well done and thank you for this!
Thanks for the comment and support 👍👊
Man, I enjoyed watching that even though I will never make a knife. You are a very good videographer on top of a talented artisan. Thanks for sharing
Never say never my friend 👍
i picked up some great tips from this video. Thank you!
Excellent info and beautiful knife man, hope the house is going well
I like that knife he had with the black acid finish in the wooden handle that are used for handle scale reference
Beautiful knife mate.
Thanks appreciate it🙏
Wow! great lookimg knife!
You are amazing bro.
I might try dipping the handle in epoxy or UV cure resin to help protect it from scratches. Beautifully done!
Missed your knife making videos man
NICE !
now that is a absolute beautiful piece of work.
thanks for sharing.
greets from the Netherlands.
Thank you very much!
Shiny. I like it 🙂
Beautiful knife 😊
Excellent process tutorial 👍
But, it left me wondering if there could be some kind of coating for the handle scales. On the other hand I'd really like to see how it ages without being buffed out.
nice job
Excellent work there. I don't know if the names are any different over there but, here in the UK that pattern is called "Bengal Tiger" and it's the most popular request I have for kirinite knife handles.
Yes thats the exact name👍 I definitely dig it😎
Have a look to see if you can get hold of some called "Axis". It's grey/black/white in daylight but, the the lighter parts are luminous. Amazing effect.
Yes! Ive seen it. Was wondering how it looks in person. Sounds like a winner👍
@@OUTDOORS55 This has to be one of my favorite knife builds I've seen on RUclips and I've watched plenty!
You made it a simple process and the knife came out fantastic! I would be proud to own this knife! I want one so bad, I have everything I need to make it except for my health and the space in my house.
I purchased all the tools and materials to make knives, but then I had my right leg amputated and have Stage 5 kidney disease. I'm only 48 and God it sucks to lose a limb! I still hunt and shoot when I feel okay and that knife would be my best friend if I had it!
GREAT JOB!!
sounds like the handle material feels like glass, grips to skin but fabric or paper towel will slide. beautiful knife, you make knife making look easy, and i know its not, great video
Please do more knife making content!
I now go bright colors on all my smaller devices to make them easier to find
There's an argument that bare hands are safer around the high rotation router bit so take that safety Steve's 🔥
You are a true sword smith mate...I pray to God you should be paid in gold...!!! Love from Australia...!!!
When finishing the Kironite I always use a car paint polish it gives a great shiny finish
He returns
nice cut for bushcraft
You need to start making knives full time and selling them to the public. I'm hoping that is what you are getting at. I would love to buy the knife in this video. Have you considered doing some convex or Scandi-vex blade grinds on the bushcraft style knives? Love convex and love Scandi and Scandi-vex is the kinda the best of both worlds. Great video. I was in the machining/tool making trade for over 32 years and I loved this video. BTW, hit me up if you want to sell that knife. LOL
"Keyboard Machinists," lol.
Great job, great knife, thanks...
I think you should contact Kirinite, since they claim, it buffs VERY easily - there might be a trick to it somewhere.
I like your video 👍👍
It does buff easily just not woth a power buffer. It buffs bu hand in a couple minutes
