Knife making made fun.
About⬇️
Hi, Im Alex, im a knife maker and RUclipsr, based out of southern Pennsylvania and my youtube channel is Outdoors55. This channel started as an outdoor backpacking channel, but quickly grew into a knife/ knife making channel. Everything I do on my channel is family friendly. I primarily focus on knife / knife making videos but occasionally throw in something different. Thank you for watching!😀

Gotta say , I enjoy this editing style more than you’re older style of just editing together a music montage for the entire thing
Then again those do get hella views

My dad died a few months ago. He made knives like this, and I've been wishing I wanted to learn from him. Love this video.
Sorry to hear that😔 hope the videos are helpful🙂
@@OUTDOORS55 they are, very. Thank you
Hahaha I've never laughed so much watching a knife making video...
Next time just use the frigging can opener, they work
You’re so much more thorough than most people on RUclips and have a good sense of humor 👍🏻
This was a hilarious edit. I about lost it when you were making your new "quench tank".
Great looking blade.
The addition of the heavy metal riffs were excellent!
8:30 "You always say perfect, that way in case anyone else is listening they're like man that guy is good" LOL
Never fails 😉
Love your sense of humor. The knife is pretty good too. Lol. Good health, stay safe.
Same here! May you be in good health
RHINO 54 - No CO VID! Stay healthy 🖖
Amidst the toxic environment of comment sections, I'm happy I can still find wholesome words such as yours.
@@crimsonholocene949 Exept for some rare occasions i like to be positive in comments. There is enough negativity in the world. Thanks. Stay safe.
Rhino I see you so much
I had 911 on speed dial when you went for the quench! Glad I'm not the only one who notices how loud the milwaukee bandsaw is, and thats coming from a plumber who puts up with some pretty loud noises on a daily basis. I really enjoyed your editing style and want to thank you for making my goal of completing my first knife a realistic one. Your way of educating and explaining is palatable and down to earth which makes the prospect of completing a knife for a noob, a lot less daunting. Thanks again, keep up the great work!
All the prima-donna "professional" knife-makers mock the shed DIYer with his quench tank hack and $1 bake pan, yet will never have "their" blade hack a freaking 2x4!! and look so fine doing so! Once again, your humor and humility used to serve your skill set is much appreciated here.
Gotta watch out for the shed diyers😂 Thanks my friend 🙂🙏
"And even after all this abuse, it can still slice this tomato with ease."
Very nice knife. Thank you for the video.
Brilliant. Not only is your work amazing, but your videos now match the quality of your work.
This is one of my all time favourite videos on youtube. Watched it quite a few times back when it came out, just revisiting it now and it's still just as good, if not better! Hope one day knifemaking content makes a return on the channel when you're up to it Alex! No rush though, take your time and I'm praying for s speedy recovery :)
Thanks I appreciate the support 🙏👊
Alex, your starting to be my favourite comedian as well as knife maker :-)
Lol 😂 thanks man!👍👊
"You can't wipe too much. That's good life advice, too." I'M STILL LAUGHING! That knife is awesome, too, by the way.
18:12 damn, sir, made that top a bottom 😂
Perfect balance of educational, fun and inspiring... and funny! Thanks for the great content as ever!
That knife makes me think if a machete and a Bowie got together and made a kid that knife is it lol you totally rocked it.
“That’s not a Knoif. This is a knoif”. How neat would it be to make a really big fork and spoon now?
Lol🤔
That cutttz lol
No one:
Absolutely no one:

Finally, a realistic portrayal of the tool choice dilemma. Everyone keeps filming themselves using the right tool the first time, when we know you try at least three tools before you find one that works.
I usually don't watch videos where people talk while making knives but my God your F****n hilarious!! I love every second of your videos!
Loved the “who cares” section! 😂
"IG KNIF"
I’m late to the party and have one thing to say, well two...Freakin AWESOME 👏
I gotta say being an old fan of the channel I gotta say I'm really liking the extra bit of editing in the vid. Lol I was laughing pretty much the whole vid
OMG, that was beautiful. Great job Mr. OUTDOORS 55!!!👏👏👏👌🤟👍
That was the best slow head turn shot ever. Great vid

The Funny Thing is the Quenching Practice was Nothing like what you Ended up Doing.
Lol it never is👍👊
Really awesome. This was my favorite video of yours so far.
Thanks my friend 👍🙏
I never get tired of watching this whenever I'm bored.
The cuts are honestly the best part! 3:28 BONK! BONK! BONK!
5:08 Been there. Lost my shit lol
Awesome demonstration with technique and humour. I wish being one of your student
I learn so much watching these videos and the sense of humor keeps me watching. Very entertaining. Please make more content :)
It slices! It dices!...and it will chop down a small 🌲 tree! I can tell your really enjoying all your new knife making equipment.
Yeah for sure! Hopefully i can really put it to the test soon😉 Thanks for watching man! It's always appreciated 👍👊
Dude yeah, very cool knife and all but the EDITING in this video was sick!! 🤣
6:05 You shouldn clamp it that way because heat travels up and you get uneven cooling, which later in the quenching can cause warpage. best way to cool it is in a vise with the point up. Same tule aplies when heating a knife - edge is always up and vertical. After quenching you can gently clamp the knife in a vise verticaly, it eliminates chanses of warpage. There is a good reason why every swordsmith does it the way i described it. Great knife! Keep up the good videos and great pointy things coming up!
Ive tried it many ways tip up tip down and horizontal. I haven't noticed a difference. Not saying one is better than the other just that it hasnt made a difference for me. It's always at the oil line. Unless i do an edge quench then it could be in the blade. Not talking about big warps very small ones most wouldnt notice unless you had a flat surface. Just some thoughts🤷♂️ Thanks my friend 👍
Way wrong. He is normalizing mill steel, it's not like there is a crazy amount of stress in it. It's not forged, it doesn't overly matter. And the "correct" way to slowly cool a blade is submersing it in something like vermiculite to slowly cool. I use 1084 frequently and normalize by just setting it on the anvil. It's more about reaching the critical temp and relaxing, not going for a crazy anneal. The longer the blade the more likely a warp. The thinner the blade, the more likely a warp. Fixing it out of the quench is easy in a jig like he used.
I love knives, all day long I'm watching knife restoration, repair, sharpening, testing, etc, and this is my absolute favorite channel now.
That knife looks like it could be a dark timber! Peter Kohler would be proud! Amazing knife
Mandatory “Now THATS a knoife” joke
Hahaha I can totally relate to the big knife struggles. I'm making a chef's knife at the moment and I'm feeling all of your pain. Awesome video as always and beautiful knife, my man! Keep up the great work.
Work of art. Somewhere in between the Bowie and Gladiator danger. Beautiful and Fun too.....Keep up.
Just found this channel and man you make some awesome vids. Absolutely hilarious I cannot stop laughing from the editing like some next level humor man. Seriously awesome channel. Subbed fo sho.
I was watching this and he went through so much trouble to get that quench tank opened up when he had a perfectly good band saw
I cant run the band saw and the oven at the same time😩
@@OUTDOORS55 That answers my question as well. Good reason, and one can not plan for every single thing when taking on a new project..but you came through brother. Excellent job!!
You wanna talk about EARNING A LIKE!
LOVE the TJB music!!! tr s great music for ANY build!
Dude, I'm only 1:13 in to this and I've got the chuckles on. This is exactly why I watch. Ignore the goobers you mentioned in the last vid. This stuff is gold!
Haha thanks my friend! I try not to take thing too seriously. Im sure tou can tell that😉 Again thanks ! 🙏
Definitely one of your best knife making videos.
So..............................subtle!!! Thankyou. Love the knives too.
The perfect knife channel
Probably the best knife I have ever seen
Oh man. The editing on this was not only awesome to watch. It was absolutely hilarious. Very cool knife.
Thanks my friend!👍👊
F'in Awesome. Something about your sense of humor clicks with me and I think you're hilarious.
Your editing is the absolute best i've ever seen.
Well, that was an enjoyable video. That knife really took on a life of its own and stole the show!
5:11 - My brain is screaming DUDE THE DREMEL IS RIGHT THERE ON THE WALL hahahah
Best knife making channel on RUclips .Love the humor.Greets from Belgium!
Did he say “perfect”? Man that guy is good!
WOW!!
Those are some pretty huuuuuge bevels!!!
Great blade, awsomer tunes, SUPER PUMPED!!!!!! TIME TO CHOP STUFF!
Awesome! That's a real beast of a knife. Loved watching this video. :)
That's a perfect post apocalyptic knife 🔪🔪 😉
It should be just about indestructible 😂 im sure it would survive an apocalypse😂
I am not a smith, however when you were normalizing your blade, I noticed three things. First by placing the blade sideways in the vice it allowed the weight of the blade to droop while still hot, perhaps if it was placed spine down you would find fewer warps. Second the vice clap is placed precisely at your warp during the normalizing. I think the steel is cooling at a different rate where the vice is clapping the steel versus where it is not, because the vice is working as a heat sink. Third, if you insulate the blade and slow the thermal cycle by placing it in perlite or between two pieces of wood and clapping the wood together, you may eliminate any warping and refine the grain structure of the steel a bit more. I am just a truck driver take what I say with a grain of salt. I just noticed this and you complained that you always or frequently experience the same warp and I believe the things I listed above are why or how you might fix your problem. Great videos. My first one was your 24 dollar Damascus blade videos and it was awesome. Good content so far keep it up.
That was amazing, not only the knife but your video editing is fun, funny and educational....I mean I think you know what your doing. BUT it still looks like you know what your doing so that's important.
That thing is a BEAST! Great video, as always, and great build.
That’s bad ass dude. You totally redeemed yourself from the other “big knife” builds. Very good video too!
That thing is as terrifying as it is awesome...and so are you!
Thanks Alex, that was one of your best.
Thanks! I try😂 maybe too hard sometimes😉 Thanks again man👍👊
Hey funny man, this is an awesome video, you excelled. As for the knife, well... love it. Keep up the great content, try to never miss you vids. Be well. John
Dude your editing cracks me up! I love watching your videos brother. They help me know what to do as a beginner and keep me going when I get discouraged! Thanks!
Very cool looking blade ! MAD MAX would love that thing. 👍👍👍
This video was genuinely hilarious! And informative!
Thanks much👍🙏
What a monster of a blade !
Mr. Crocodile Dundee, Congratulations on your first REALLY BIG KNIFE!!! I'm glad that you figured out the process and thank you for sharing that process with us. Please do a follow up video on how you make the sheath. That is if you're planning on making one. Much respect. Robert
Im afraid i cant make a good sheath as the knife is too big for my press 😂 i tried once and failed but may try again. Thanks my friend 👍🙏
Your videos are super funny, duder! The facial expressions you make when you stare quietly are too good. I do that to my wife all the time! Keep up the entertaining content!
Hi Bud,
I got 3 tips for ya.
Many shops have grinding rooms with doors and separate air just to keep the metal dust at bay. Any machinery or electronics that the metal dust gets in is history! Some people put grinders on wheeled tables or carts!!! Push it outside. The metal dust is good for the plants!
On the handles. Surfboard builders will epoxy the cloth to the Board and let it dry. Then use another coat of epoxy or two coats to clear coat it. It comes out tougher than nails but smooth and slick. You can use a longer setting and lightly flame it with propane or alcohol to make any bubbles pop. No butane, matches, or candles they leave soot and turn stuff black! When you get the nack of it down it’s a great surface. It’s deep reflections, smooth to touch, good to grip, and tough. You
For epoxy or fiberglass that does not set from cold or wet conditions, warm it gently with an incandescent light bulb. A little heat and time! I have set it in the sun, but I live in Florida.
Great show! Good luck!
Love the editor
Its big bad and beautiful, you have done yourself proud I tip my hat to you sir.
Thank you very much!and thanks for taking the time to watch 👍🙏
The "Ho Ho Ho's"..I almost died bro😂

I love the level of humor you bring to these videos.
There was a certain manic feeling to the video that I loved. Also, that knife is amazing!
Thanks my friend!🙂🙏
Unlike most big bandsaws, that benchtop uses a series wound motor. So yeah, loudest tool ever.
Great work and video btw.
All I can say is beautiful knife
First time I've seen your videos.... Great stuff. Entertaining, educational and funny as hell.
