I'm creating five beautiful integral knives with twisted Damascus steel. The process involves many intricate steps, including forging, shaping, and hand-sanding the blades. The Damascus pattern will turn out beautifully. I'm using various handle materials like resin ivory, carbon fiber, blue burl, and tiger stripe maple to add unique touches to each knife. It's a labor-intensive process, but I'm excited about the results. Which handle material do you like the most? Let me know in the comments!

To not get shocked, ground yourself and the machine to the same source. Search "anti-static bracelet". Electricians use these to not cause discharge when working on electronics so as to not damage the electronics. Same principle here. Keep yourself at the same electric potential as the tool. Take the lead from the anti-static bracelet and connect it directly to the grinder/buffer's ground. You'll get build-up charge on the wire wheel just like a brush motor, probably same with the cotton wheel on dry days. You'll can make a slipping lead on the axle and tie it to ground as well. This will keep everything at the same electric potential and you won't get the random static discharges. Hope that helps!

That would have been my answer, except there's no way I'd recommend a wrist leash anywhere near the spinning buffer. Buffers are one of the most dangerous machines in a knife shop without an extra dangly to get caught in the wheel. Would that bracelet work the same if attached to your ankle instead?

As an electrician with 40+ years of experience, I approve of this comment, and highly recommend using this method to prevent static discharge.

You guys should do an entire video on how to shape a handle like these! It’s not as easy as it looks, and to get that facet to come out, so nice takes lots of skill! I think a lot of knife makers focus on the metal and the blade work and don’t put as much attention into their handle shaping. I am absolutely stunned at the way these look. Great job Kyle!

Hey Kyle, there are anti-static shoes you can buy, as well as anti-static mats. I used to work for an electronic repair shop and that's what we used to get rid of static. The mats are grounded to the equipment you are using, then the shoes ground you to the mat. It also insulates you from the rest of the shop and Earth ground, so you're less likely to be shocked by faulty wiring. Plus you can get steel/crush resistant toed anti-static shoes. Pretty handy.

Isnt there a kinda like gel coating you can cover the floor with, like a paint or poly? I worked in an automotive shop that was previously a computer repair shop or something and the entire concrete floor was covered in it. Couldnt really tell until like brake cleaner got on it and it started to bubble/gel.

Take some copper wire and find a good bare metal spot on your buffer that you can hook it to and run it to a ground or outside and stick the end of the wire in the ground and that'll stop it. I've had to do the same thing to mine as well as my 1x30" grinder. Those blades are amazingly awesome and beautiful! Always a pleasure watching you make them.

To get rid of the static electricity on your buffer, attach a thick bare copper wire to the grinder body. Have it touch the inside of the buffing wheel. If you still get shocked, then extend it down into the ground or even wire it into the ground side of the motor wiring. This should stop the static electricity from building up and giving you a shock.
