  • Watch how Master Bladesmith, Kyle Royer turns knifemaking into an art form in the final assembly of a massive damascus frame handle bowie he calls FORTITUDE. Will this be one of his favorite pieces of all time? First, see Kyle struggle through the final questions he’s had to overcome with Fortitude. Kyle is extremely nervous about warping the fittings during heat treating. Once he pushes past that point, it’s smooth sailing from there until he has to sharpen the massive double-edged blade. Little did he know, the coffee etch and bluing will come with their own challenges. Overcoming these challenges was one of the most rewarding parts of this build and Kyle’s painstaking pursuit of excellence shines through during the entire knife making journey in building Fortitude.

    About Me
My name is Kyle Royer. I’ve been making knives for over 16 years. I discovered if you want to go fast, go alone, if you want to go far, go together. So I got with my family and started a business about 3 years ago dedicated to teaching people the beautiful art of knives.

They can't afford his creations, this knife alone will sell for tens of thousands of dollars. A sword he made recently sold for $40,000.
Kyle takes MUCH longer to make a weapon than most other smiths do, months and months of daily work to finish just 1 item. In movies, dozens of blades need to be made in the time it takes Kyle to make 1.
They use props and CGI in movies because most of the time you see weapons from 2 to 10 meters away. Battle ready blades for action scenes also have a limited but functional appearance.

I really like Kyles work but he takes an enormous amount of time to make them. He's lucky he finds clients willing to pay big sums for his work, or he'd have to speed his process up to make more and sell them at lower prices...like pretty much all other bladesmiths do.

8:45 Kyle, I'm 57 years old. I still remember seeing Mother of Pearl for the first time as a five-year-old. It has always been my favourite 'gem'. I remember finding scallop shells in coastal places in my late-teens where I lived that were tea-saucer sized inside the shell where the pearlescence is found. We'd leave shells behind that today would be perfect scale size. But hey, I was a hippy in the middle of nowhere, so I tried to travel light and knife scales weren't in my head in those days.

The gold is soft, much softer than other metals, so if you create a ledge in the steel, like a hook, the gold squishes into those gaps in the groove and that ledge at the top, keeps the squished gold wire from "spilling" out, sand it flat and you get a beautiful inlay, that looks flush with the surface. Kyle explains this in quite a few of his videos, this process is called damascening. Its an explanation of how this works, its what Kyle's dad has detailed above.
