What about the last rinse before the salt being a rinse in boiling distilled water. Zero chance of unwanted minerals remaining and the water would evaporate fast for an even, dry surface for the molten jacuzzi. ✌
I've seen a pale white fog on polished parts washed in 99% pure isopropyl alcohol ,and acetone. I remove it with a microfiber cloth that's freshly washed by gloved hands in hot water with Dawn dishsoap and hung to dry. Paper towels leave scratches. ✌
I’m no expert, but tap water does indeed contain a number of minerals. It’s also not something you can control, and for a critical step such as this, you need all the control you can get.
Well live to fight another day. After your commentary on it needing to be boiling and how to adjust was very surprised to see you put it in anyway with it not having the boiling action to keep everything all mixing around evenly. Looked good from first views so can't wait to see you get it corrected and looking stunning.
After the little disappointment at the end all I can offer you is,” If at first you don’t succeed try, try again “. I’m sure you’ll fix the problem some how. Good on you Mum for lending a helping hand, regards from Down Under.

Oh man, what a cliffhanger. I sure hope you don't have to strip the blueing off and start the finish over. 🤞 fingers crossed. Thanks Royer team for another fine video.
Keep your head up.Your work is always stunning in the end. You are a true artist and master at your craft. Takes time, love and passion. I always look forward to your videos. Make me laugh at times and jaw drop on what you end up creating.
Everything I have blued always has a little brown oxide rub off when dried with a paper towel. I have only ever used home-brew salts though. Maybe boiling the blade in water right after it comes out of the salt tank will help complete the conversion of red iron oxides into black oxides?
Hot bluing needs to be done at boiling temps. It needs to be boiling at 282 for 10 minutes, then drop it. Let it reach the desired color or temp, pull it out and rinse in cold water. Inspect. If it's not the color you want, back in the salt tank. If you like it, put in in very hot water, not boiling, to heat it back up. 30 seconds in the hot water tank, pull it out and while hot, place it in some kind of oil to neutralize the salts. Pull it out (wipe on rig oil if you have it) wrap in newspaper or paper towels. The bluing will set and develop over the next 24 hours. We blue guns all the time.
Bluing that would be difficult and the finish would not be durable. A somewhat similar process, salt bath nitride, is used on stainless parts to great effect. Also makes the surface very hard and slick, which is great for mail.

Have you ever considered gun bluing and then regrinding the bevels to have a like... Duo tone? Maybe even a soft fade from steel gray to the black? Might look neat. Would be interesting to see a rough test piece of that. If you're interested.
How does hot bluing perform for scratch resistance? Trying to make a black glossy finish for a knife and acid just scratches too easily and DLC is too expensive for this project. Considering hot bluing, but would have to get all the equipment, so want to make sure it's worth it.
Not sure what kind of water set up you guys have , but I’d suggest an in home Reverse Osmosis filtration system that would eliminate any residue left on the blade from rinsing. Love the channel!

Salt bath nitride is what the gun industries use to make a jet black look. It is similar to bluing. Also makes the surface super hard so may not be the best for the initial sharpening.

Perhaps you should try using distilled or demineralized water to rinse the blade before bluing. The tap water I've had in your area was good, but had a mineral taste. That could be just enough contamination to hinder bluing. Btw the BBQ in your area is also very good, an unsung national treasure like yourself.
I know its outside of your area of expertise, but I bet you could make an AMAZING Damascus crescent wrench. They really are not that complicated, and knowing your style it would be more of an art piece than a tool. Give it a shot man!

Rust will show up if Kyle keeps it wet for too long. The bluing salts will amplify the salty by a lot! For Kyle to wait 4 more minutes while the salts boil with water on the blade would be bad. He would have to go back to hand sanding it then buff it again. That took 8 hours last time. -Josh Royer
Hi kyle. I'm interested if you found why thé blueing salt did not work 'cause i' m trying to parkerise some blade and i found that it does not sty on the blade if i'm not hot enough (140 C)

What about the last rinse before the salt being a rinse in boiling distilled water. Zero chance of unwanted minerals remaining and the water would evaporate fast for an even, dry surface for the molten jacuzzi. ✌
Exactly what I was thinking. Tap water tends to have minerals in it, which seem to bother the bluing salts from doing their thing.
