Dang a filing jig...I don't miss that thing lol. Remember when I built mine was so excited. It's a good option if your just starting out. I think everyone should at least do one knife that way.
100% everyone should at least do it once. You are not lying though, i will not be sad if i never use it again lol. hope you jump in on this challenge Phillip!
@@Wengelsworkshop I'm actually going to get into this one. I passed on the fantasy build because It was wayyyy out of my comfort zone and I didn't feel like I could finish something on time. I've made this style of knife many times so shouldn't be too time consuming. Hope ya guys get a good turn out. I seen Kyle's knife and its what you would expect.
Great video! Thanks for the opportunity to get into this competition. Just a tip while filing the bevels. I find it useful to put a sharpie mark on the edge of the bevel closest to you in order to see where the file is taking material away. It is a little easier to judge when to stop or move the file down.
Thanks Mark! And you are absolutely right. Sometimes I forget about the little things that helped me early on. Definitely would have been a good tip to include.
Yeah. Not listed as being poisonous on any tech sheet I can find. However, can severely irritate lungs and airways, mouth and sinuses, eyes and skin. Prolonged exposure is a possible cause of lung cancer and other lung conditions. But it’s not poisonous.
@@andrewallason4530its really arguing semantics at this point. Grinning metal throws dust into the air and it’s bad for your lungs. It gives you welder lung and other issues that shorter life. Just wear a respirator. That’s all we need to focus on.
I'm making my first start to finish knife starting next week. Making it from an old bastard file my grandfather saved to make a knife from. It's not uniform in thickness, so it'll be interresting to attempt. I'm thinking of buying some different steel in the mean time lol
Awesome! I would definitely recommend picking up some steel so you know exactly what you are working with. if you want your grandfathers file to become an heirloom i would recommend saving that until you have made a few knives and have more skills. good luck either way!
Im in for the win. But what do I do with yet another of my brainchild’s? Haha. Good old BA VanDer SanDer. I might just use that for the whole build ? Done it before. So it works!! Exactly where I’ve designed it for. 😊
Thank you. Yes please download and use the template. Mainly bc if you dont go off of the template we dont really know if you actually made the knife for this contest. however you could use damascus or hamon or any other finish you want. jimping, file work any combination of handle materials is all fine. hope you jump in contest!
in this case the scratches were very deep bc it was ground with a file so i had to start with a low grip sand paper. i think it was 60. but say if you use a belt grinder and finish with a grit like 220 i would start hand sanding with maybe 150
Amazing! I love your channel! I’ve watched a ton of your videos. Being someone who has never actually made a knife. How long would you say it took you to hand grind that blade (using a file and sand paper) once you already had it cut out Just curious because I might try to make one. Thanks!
Thanks for the support Jason! I think it took me about 1.5 hours per side with the file. And maybe another 1.5 hours sanding total. It is very time consuming but is so worth it in the end. It is so rewarding to make a knife. I would highly recommend making one!
If you are making the knife with a file like I did 1/8 of and inch or roughly 3 mm. Anything thicker adds a lot of time to the filing process that already takes a lot of patience.
Hahaha I didn't want to, but I wanted a video that would show the newbies without tools. It was so much damn work and I will not be doing it again any time soon!
@@jimmycamacho3264 because filing without a handle, with the rather pointy tang nestled into your lower palm is a good way of impaling yourself on it. It's inherently unsafe.
So a complete novice could drop for a 2x72 (but no longer) and instantly not be a novice anymore? Good deal. Oh how things have changed in more recent years…
Heck yeah Cole, major props for going the low tech route. It's humbling to make a life this way at least once a year in my eyes. Very good work.
Thanks James. I am pumped to see the results of this!
i am currently working on a knife making project but i dont have a grinder, this way of filing the bevels is going to help me so much! Thanks!
Glad it could help!
THAT SHARPENING RIG IS SO SIMPLE AND GENIUS! ❤
Neat knife build how to.. like how you take the time to explain certain details to be aware of during process.. keep up the good job
My Respects. Ive tried filing in bevels like that. Made me miss my 2x72 very much.
Thanks JP! I dont plan on doing this again lol. Shit was rough
I really love that everyone is putting a limitation on themselves. It makes it a lot of fun, and showcases different aspects of the art.
Thanks Charles! I hope you jump in on the contest!

Great idea for the knife grinding jig. Well done
Such detail in the file work , glad for the education!!

Great Vid, always interesting to see the low tech method each person uses, a lot of interesting tips as you watch.
Thank you! Glad it was helpful
I am wanting to start knife making and this video was so handy!
Good and clean work, I'm impressed.
Just found your channel, I started with the build of of the knife, great videos, thank you!!
Never heard before that steel is poisonous requiring a respirator to safely work.

All those tiny little filings and steel dust your breathing in? That’s not good for your lungs is it

One other thing to consider, whatever is used to grind WITH gets in the air too. The adhesive, the abrasive element, the backing,
Great video. I like the way you went about making this knife. This will be inspiring to guys considering knife making.

a very good and explained video. very good job. thx 😊😊😊
What respirator would I need for this, I have a few but I wouldn’t want to use the wrong one.

I live in a van and can't use an angle griner. There are too many sparks. I'm looking at a litium power jig saw. And hand drill.

That's awesome!
I don't use anything but a hammer and a forge then I use a hand file to clean it and sharpen it
Hey
Do you have a video on how you made your paint-can heat treat furnace? Would be great to copy
Do you know what angle you set the jig to get the bevel that high? I did it on accident when I bought my jig.
Nice Project, Subscribed ;-) 🐧
Man exceptional video thank you!
hi just watched ep 1 one beginners knife making video what is the angle required for apex of blade ? Tom.
Hey buddy I really like the jig you made for putting an edge on the knife! I’m in the process of making myself one

Can we still win the competition if we make the knife with damascus or san mai?
Absolutely. Aside from the profile you can change whatever you want!

Is there a guideline on what steel to use for viewers to enter the contest? or can we do whatever we choose? Damascus or whatever
Any steel you want Jay. looking forward to seeing what you make!
@@Wengelsworkshop thanks. And btw great knife and video as always.
Thank you Jay!
How do i identify 1084 steel? Is there methods that i can use?
Not other than buying it from a reputable source
This is so cool.
Kyle made some small adjustments to the design, are participants allowed to do that too or does it have to be 1:1?
Preferably stick very close to the profile, but you can change anything else.
Red Beard and Royer are no novice knifemakers. They are pros with loads of fancy equipment.
You cut out the template didn’t show it
What’s the little oven called
how thick is the metal you uses?

What if you have a 2x48 grinder 😅
If you have made less than 10 knives you can qualify for novice.

U r filing not grinding, just saying.😋😆
