      Great video, I'm no knife maker but i still thoroughly enjoy the video. Subbed!
      When you use the dowel with sand paper wrapped around it i was thinking maybe if you put 1 or 2 bearings at the end of the dowel that makes it easier to hold and give you more control.

    I truly thank you for you presenting style, specifically how you present multiple options, focusing on how it is possible even with the most basic of tools. I have been a maker for a couple of years now. I often say self taught but truly i am taught by the good people who spend their time sharing their own experiences. Because of this i have seen so many videos, by many different creators. Some will criticise any method but the 'pro method', and although I see their point, most who come looking for the basics, just want to know essentially the points / structure that you use here. Thank you for your content!

    Hey there. Since the start of the year (when things went a bit wonky for us all) i've been binge watching knife making videos. There's lots of good videos out there but i find your complete presentation to be very comforting and confidence inspiring. I'm in the process of making my first knife but i have a few questions.
    1. Does the plunge line have to be vertical? I've designed my knife to have a forward (tip) leaning plunge line. That can be future me's problem.
    2. My knife is a decent size (Not over compensating, Honest). How do you work out how many holes to drill in the tang, to balance the blade to the handle?
    3. How much will my beard effect the outcome of the knife?

    • @RedBeardOps
      @RedBeardOps  3 года назад +13

      Heck yeah, thanks man. I'm happy you're getting in the game! 1.) Nope, doesn't have to be vertical at all! Many makers have a forward slant of the plunge line. Most of mine end up that way... I don't think a backwards slant looks good though... just my opinion. 2.) That is a difficult question. Handle material will come into play. Some people like having the knife a little blade heavy and others like more of the weight in the handle. To lighten more than just drilling holes you can "hollow" out the tang with a grinding wheel or skeleton it with a dremal. Lots of options here. Trial and error will likely be your friend. 3.) The beard is actually pretty crucial to success. If you keep a decent beard the process of knife making, cabin building, and weight lifting will be easier for sure. To state it simply, the beard will help with all aspects of life.
      Cheers man!

    This is outstanding. I'm struggling starting out knifemaking and needed a good step-by-step to start over with. I also like that you use a convection oven. So many people at the knife forums insist you can't do tempering with a convection oven but I just can't afford an Evenheat so I have to make it work. Thanks man.

    • @RedBeardOps
      @RedBeardOps  3 года назад +1

      @@peterbrouwer143 Pre-HT, I like to keep around 0.020" "behind the edge" meaning that where the edge of your blade will eventually be you have a 0.020" plateau before HT. I would start with this edge dimension then bring the bevel all the way up to about 1/16'' away from the spine at the plunge line.
