      This can also be achieved, using more basic tools.
      Planer and the elaborate sharpening is not necessary to get a good edge.
      Furnace can be anything like a bbq set.
      Fashioning a handle is even easier, using fikes, sand papers.

    I have done something similar with scissors. For my most recent one, I just left the original handle and sharpened the one side to as sharp as I could get and it's now expressly for cutting plastic because the metal doesn't seem hard enough to retain an edge for wood, plus I have a bunch of knives.
    Anyway, it came out great!

We make things we could certainly buy, but where’s the fun in that? I’m a wood turner, and a wood carver. I’d be proud to use your carving knife. Hope you keep making them.

      @@k9insomniac783 The criticism of the project is less about the idea and more about implementation. If you are in fact a woodworker, I am sure you would very quickly tire of the constant need to sharpen this tool.

    • @k9insomniac783
      @k9insomniac783 3 месяца назад

      @@slavshuravesky6933 I get that, and your not wrong. Where I was coming from was that in the age we live in, when people need things, the go to Woodcraft, Rockler, Amazon, ect.. We have kind of gotten away from the days where when tools were needed, they were made at home. Most times from other things that were laying around broken in the shed. Now I do realize that this person is a content creator and makes videos accordingly. To me, and this is only my opinion, when I see younger people trying to make tools instead of buying them, it reminds me of times gone by. We are at the top of the food chain for this very reason. Again, I respect your opinion and don’t disagree with what you’re saying. I’m just glad to see people from the newer generation learning and using what they have to make what they need.

    I mean I got to give it to you, considering the basic tools and thinking outside the box you had to use, you did a pretty good job.
    If you really enjoy knife making, maybe eventually take a look at a small 1x30 belt grinder. They're really affordable and can do a good amount of work for their size. That's what I started on and I still have it and use it sometimes.
    You'll just want to build a sturdier and larger platen than the small ones they come with but other than that, it's pretty much it.
    Get some ceramic belts and you'll absolutely shred even harder steels without issues.

    In the meantime I'm waiting for the blade to temper, I'll go and take the car apart, bolt by bolt, so I can see if there are any spare bits I could use.. Then I'll build a conservatory and get a 20 tonne stamping press. Once I've done that I'll finish off this cut all knife that has now gone blunt. Oh, I forgot to walk the dog. I think I hear my wife coming back from the shop now,
    "Hi honey, what you want for dinner? What have you done with the car? I bought a new kitchen scissors, they came as an offer with two carving knives"

    sorry. but there are some points.
    Most scissor blades have a slight inward curve to make cutting easier, so your knife won't be straight at all. the other thing is about tempering with water. you made your blade a very fragile piece and also added even more curves to it but After warming it up to 430 your blade isn't fragile anymore. The other thing is how do you bevel your hardened blade with a hand tool?! It shouldn't be possible at all and your tool has to slide over the edges you want to shape.

With all the time and effort you invested into the project, you could have had a useful knife if you had only used some decent steel.
