I love your ingenuity and working with what you have. I hand carve wood and although your knife may not stand up to the abuse I put knives through, I would still be proud of it. Thanks for sharing your work with us.
Gotta hand it to ya .... that's a pretty ingenious knife jig using just what you got ! And that's just how i like it! Can't afford all this expensive equipment like i see .
This can also be achieved, using more basic tools. Planer and the elaborate sharpening is not necessary to get a good edge. Furnace can be anything like a bbq set. Fashioning a handle is even easier, using fikes, sand papers.
I love the reduce, reuse and recycle ♻️ mentality displayed in this video. It's this kind of thinking that goes to show just how creative and resourceful people can be with very little to start from. Good lil knife!
I have done something similar with scissors. For my most recent one, I just left the original handle and sharpened the one side to as sharp as I could get and it's now expressly for cutting plastic because the metal doesn't seem hard enough to retain an edge for wood, plus I have a bunch of knives. Anyway, it came out great!
My friend..I’m a little surprised by the comment section. You sir, have just accomplished what men for thousands of years have done as a time honered tradition. We make things we could certainly buy, but where’s the fun in that? I’m a wood turner, and a wood carver. I’d be proud to use your carving knife. Hope you keep making them.
@@k9insomniac783 The criticism of the project is less about the idea and more about implementation. If you are in fact a woodworker, I am sure you would very quickly tire of the constant need to sharpen this tool.

Thanks! For being such a simple version of the jig, it worked surprisingly well😁(I've seen much more complex versions of the same jig, but they're a bit overkill lol)
I mean I got to give it to you, considering the basic tools and thinking outside the box you had to use, you did a pretty good job. If you really enjoy knife making, maybe eventually take a look at a small 1x30 belt grinder. They're really affordable and can do a good amount of work for their size. That's what I started on and I still have it and use it sometimes. You'll just want to build a sturdier and larger platen than the small ones they come with but other than that, it's pretty much it. Get some ceramic belts and you'll absolutely shred even harder steels without issues.
Nice little blade, and a great repurpose of that scissors blade! With it having basically no tang to speak of, be *real* careful if you use that for carving any but the softest woods!
Its holding up well! The handle and tang are all still secure. I use it mostly for carving applications and detail work. I sharpen it once in a while, and it holds a good edge😁
Great job! Personally, i would have tried to solder the blade onto a strip of metal the same size and shape as the wood you used in the middle of your handle. But that's just me: "full tang" blades are the safest in my opinion.
Hello, and thanks for your support! I believe the wood is African Teak (www.wood-database.com/afrormosia/). I scavenged it from some broken chairs that my Grandparents had
In the meantime I'm waiting for the blade to temper, I'll go and take the car apart, bolt by bolt, so I can see if there are any spare bits I could use.. Then I'll build a conservatory and get a 20 tonne stamping press. Once I've done that I'll finish off this cut all knife that has now gone blunt. Oh, I forgot to walk the dog. I think I hear my wife coming back from the shop now, "Hi honey, what you want for dinner? What have you done with the car? I bought a new kitchen scissors, they came as an offer with two carving knives"
This could have been done without sacrificing the full lenght of the blade. A more sturdy handle ciukd gave resulted. However fir a small knife, this was good. Jib done well.
You don't? I thought the only thing I sort of messed up was that, instead of heating the steel up slowly, I threw it right into the already blazing fire. My set up is definitely primitive, but if there's something else I really messed up I'd love to know! (the steel did harden well, and it's now one of my sharpest knives😁)
Some "fine stainless" steels actually have lower chrome content, and can be case hardened in a coal forge, adding a very small amount of carbon during the heating process, it's called carburization
sorry. but there are some points. Most scissor blades have a slight inward curve to make cutting easier, so your knife won't be straight at all. the other thing is about tempering with water. you made your blade a very fragile piece and also added even more curves to it but After warming it up to 430 your blade isn't fragile anymore. The other thing is how do you bevel your hardened blade with a hand tool?! It shouldn't be possible at all and your tool has to slide over the edges you want to shape.
Please be careful with that table saw... You're going to have a serious injury if you keep this up. This was sketchy af. Other than that, keep making knives (or other things) and enjoy. Your knives will become better every time! Stay creative!
вывод: Достаточно к железке притаранить деревяшку и наточить и это уже НОЖ ))))))) Правда несколько примитивно!? Может нужны какие то критерии что бы отделить НОЖ от НЕ НОЖА!?!?!?!?
Waste of time and electricity. You could by a package of 4 excelent steak knive at Dollar General for less than it cost to make this one knife. However the concept was creative and partly resourceful .
Yepp - das sehe ich ganz genau so! Und dann noch das bißchen Metall vom Scherengriff absägen, was wenigstens ein wenig stabilität gebracht hätte. Aber gute Idee!
Scissors were most likely some sort of crappy stainless alloy. Your "hardenning" did nothing - as evidenced by the fact that you are able to use a file to remove material post "heat treat". With all the time and effort you invested into the project, you could have had a useful knife if you had only used some decent steel.
I'm sorry, but you cannot harden stainless steel this way. The steel must be protected from carbon loss and the quenching temperature is over 1000 C. Sorry, take it as advice for the future
Hätte er die kaputte Schere weggeworfen, wäre uns erspart geblieben, sich so etwas anzuschauen. Was soll man mit so einem zusammengepfuschten "Messer" dass hässlich aussieht und noch nicht mal Papier richtig schneidet?

You might want to use a coping saw for the thin wood. Less breaks that way. Still, cool knife!🤪
You did good young man, but never cut , or saw or pry, in the direction of your hand and fingers, trust me on this one , but great job.
Heat treatment for stainless? Interesting 🤔

I think it's great, hobby knife you made as A hobby.
Gloves?
I'm confused by hardening it. Most scissors are already hardened. It might be why the bevel took so long even with a file. If have checked.

Slabbed between 2 aluminum pieces rather then wood, with 3-rivets down the handle to sturdy it up be good for rugged use and long life...!

There are much safer ways to make those boards thinner. I would suggest not using the table saw on such small pieces.
