I Made a Knife Out of Scrap Railroad Metal
Hello, and welcome to my channel, VanHornArts Woodworking!
In this video I'm making a big fixed blade knife. I've made a few other knife projects in the past, but this was by far the most intense (and the best :D).
The scrap metal was found beside a railroad track - it could be from a CAT machine, as it had some yellow paint left on it, and the maple wood was harvested from a friend's property last year.

Woodturning - Super Spalted!
Просмотров 2,2 тыс.3 месяца назад
Hello and welcome to VanHornArts! Here is another very spalted piece a driftwood that I found. Wood that is this decayed is a bit difficult to turn, and way harder to sand - I'm getting the hang of it a little. I hope you enjoy the video, please leave a 👍 and Subscribe! Thanks! Woodturning - The Root Ball

Hello, and welcome to VanHornArts! I found this bit of wood on the edge of a pond, and I'm not sure what species it is. It could be a Sumac, seeing as there were many in the area I found this? Woodturning - Spalted Driftwood Chunk
Просмотров 2,4 тыс.6 месяцев назад
Hello, and welcome to VanHornArts! Found this bit of wood washed up on the beach, and I could see a bit of spalting poking out on the side so I took it home and popped it onto the lathe to turn. I'm very glad I did! I'm not 100% sure what kind of wood this is, but it could be beech. That would be quite fitting, seeing as that's where I found it lol. Anyhow, I hope you enjoy the video - please l...
Woodturning - Lots of Knots
Просмотров 3,2 тыс.6 месяцев назад
Hello, and welcome to VanHornArts! In the video I'm turning this log of pine which is totally covered in knots! I found it on the beach, with a very charred outside. It probably escaped a campfire at some point. It was quite fun and easy turning such a soft wood, and it sanded really well. Thanks for watching, and I hope you enjoy the video! Woodturning - Bleached Driftwood Burl
Просмотров 7 тыс.7 месяцев назад
Welcome to VanHornArts! In this video, I turn a small driftwood burl. Most of the wood's color seems to have been bleached out from drifting in the water for so long, and the wood is left with a very interesting grey color, with a few spots of brown. Thanks for watching, I hope you enjoy the video! Don't forget to leave a like, and Sub - Thanks! Check out my Etsy shop here: vanhornarts.etsy.com
Woodturning - Crab Apple Log
Просмотров 5 тыс.7 месяцев назад
Hello, and welcome to VanHornArts! In this video, I turn this nice crab apple log, sourced from a dead tree in my backyard, into a simple dry-vase. I don't know exactly what species this crab apple tree is, but for those of you who are interested, it's the kind with tiny cherry-sized apples, whatever that is called? They don't taste good. They taste like chalk lol. The wood smells really great ...
Woodturning - Spalted Maple Cookie Jar (Part 1)
Просмотров 8857 месяцев назад
Welcome to VanHornArts! I'm really pushing the limits of this lathe! My goal is to make a nice large cookie jar from this maple log. Half of the log is very soft wood, and the other half is very very hard wood, so it was off balance, and shook like crazy😅 Thanks for watching, and I hope y'all enjoy watching the process and progress of this project! Maybe drop a good old 👍thumbs up, and Subscrib...
I Made An Epic Carving Knife From These Old Scissors
Просмотров 193 тыс.8 месяцев назад
This pair of kitchen shears has been used in this house for a very long time. Well, they broke, and instead of trying to fix them, I did something way better: I made a carving knife! Apparently, this is some pretty good steel, and this turned out to be one of the sharpest objects I've ever held. I'm extremely happy with how this turned out. Thanks for watching, I hope y'all enjoy the video, and...
Woodturning Non-Symmetrical Table Legs On A Lathe? (End Table Build)

Hello, and welcome to VanHornArts! I had a spark of inspiration after watching a few different videos, one of them being Oliver Gomis's multi-axis turning vid, to use a multi-axis turning jig to turn four non-symmetrical end table legs all at once. Woodturning - Little Cherry Burl
Просмотров 1,3 тыс.9 месяцев назад
Welcome to VanHornArts! In this video I'm turning a bit of a burl (I'm pretty certain it's cherry) into a shallow dish. First time turning a burl, and, while it's not the most fantastic or chatoyant burl, it was quite fun to turn. I've previously had some bad luck with bowl turning: bowl splitting after turning, weird grain that just won't sand smooth, but this time, I think I nailed it. One of...
Woodturning - Spalted Maple Bowl

In this video, I'm turning a chunk of Red Maple wood that I foraged from the backyard. I found some weird grain and spalting in there! Woodturning Applewood - Tiny Little Flask

Woodturning - Ice Cream Scoop

Woodturning - Ice Cream Scoop In this video I'm making a handle for an ice cream scoop kit. The wood is Honey Locust, it's a very hard and heavy wood, so it should work well for this. sorry. but there are some points. Most scissor blades have a slight inward curve to make cutting easier, so your knife won't be straight at all. the other thing is about tempering with water. you made your blade a very fragile piece and also added even more curves to it but After warming it up to 430 your blade isn't fragile anymore. The other thing is how do you bevel your hardened blade with a hand tool?! It shouldn't be possible at all and your tool has to slide over the edges you want to shape.

Nice little blade, and a great repurpose of that scissors blade! With it having basically no tang to speak of, be *real* careful if you use that for carving any but the softest woods!

Epic carving knife???? I'm sorry, but that sure looks like an ugly (poorly made) shank, Zero attention to details, wrong materials, no concerns about integrity of the joint... Don't get me wrong, I would most definitely put this video up, but with a different adjective on the title: simple, easy, small, utility knife or something to reference the recycling/repurposing part of the project. There's plenty to admire in the process, but I definitely think you can do better.

no tang a waste of time, also, that ss 420, doesn't respond very well to fire and quench in water, normally need 1850, 1950 F, in warm oil.(not the right color, didn't reach it), and the tempering can be done 150 to 390, never pass 400 or you ruin the stainless still metal properties/quality, so at the end you reprpouse a ruined scissor in a ruined chunk of metal with handle. very bad job. and 1.8k ppl like it? do you all watch a video and take it as granted truth/ right way to go? just because someone posted it.?... huh...lots of dumb ppl arround.... As you can see, i Didn't even mention, you file it, and then you quuench... when you can softner the metal in fire to make it easy to work with and not destroy your file, also, if you are going to do it by hand, with hand tools... you don't need to RE-QUENCH, was already done by the scissor manufacturer that i bet in the worst scenario did it better than you.... No I am not a hater, when is good is good, and when is bad is bad, this is ridiculous wrong

@@slavshuravesky6933 I get that, and your not wrong. Where I was coming from was that in the age we live in, when people need things, the go to Woodcraft, Rockler, Amazon, ect.. We have kind of gotten away from the days where when tools were needed, they were made at home. Most times from other things that were laying around broken in the shed. Now I do realize that this person is a content creator and makes videos accordingly. To me, and this is only my opinion, when I see younger people trying to make tools instead of buying them, it reminds me of times gone by. We are at the top of the food chain for this very reason. Again, I respect your opinion and don’t disagree with what you’re saying. I’m just glad to see people from the newer generation learning and using what they have to make what they need.

Scissors were most likely some sort of crappy stainless alloy. Your "hardenning" did nothing - as evidenced by the fact that you are able to use a file to remove material post "heat treat". With all the time and effort you invested into the project, you could have had a useful knife if you had only used some decent steel.
