I found a couple of old Farriers rasps (used to file down horse hooves) at a local junk yard and decided to make a knife out of one of them. I started off by heating them up to anneal them to make it easier to work. Then I did a couple of tests for heat treating and found that the steel needed to be quenched in water instead of oil to harden.
I'm really happy with how this turned out!

Wow thanks for all the kind comments!! I’m currently building a cedar strip canoe, if you’d like to see more of that process and my other projects you should follow my Instagram instagram.com/davidbrynparker
Awesome work, subbed! Do you sell anything like this? Would make an amazing gift I'd love to buy!
Could I please ask ,I'm trying to do this but all I have is fire and a circular woolshead sander ,I can quench my blade ok ...I'm just wondering do you think to temper it I could put it on the outside of the fire where it will heat up but not to glowing do you think that would work ?
I made a blade quenched it but didn't temper it and it broke
You make me think about how many tools are still necessary in my workshop. Congratulations on a wonderful job!
That is a very nice looking knife!
Excellent job. Very beautiful.
Beautiful...I need one like this...!!!
Beautiful work
Bom trabalho ficou uma faca excelente.....parabéns 👏👏👏👏
very cool Dave,nice job
That’s one badass blade.
Super cool knife David- when I saw it on insta was wondering how you got that pattern on it. sweeet!
Well done David.
Had in my possession a well worn Nicolson rasp, me thinking what a great blade that Will make. Get the fire going, heat her up, pound and shape, pound and shape, file and shape. At this point I’m very happy with this blade. Heat her up to a nice bright orange, watch the colors run just right and into the water she go’s. My intention was to quench about a quarter of the edge but a brain fart occurs and the whole thing goes in. Now the Arkansas is put too work, good grief what an edge!! Then I dropped it.
Beautiful knife
Excellent work
That polishing of the handle, my dude, looked fine af
Love your forge!
that's a good knife... well done!
liked&subbed
Ficou muito bom , parabéns
very nice looking knife, ya done good
I was showing my rasp file dagger to a machinist. Before grinding, I thought I did a good annealing. He did a file test and said I should anneal it and not quench it. The file is already so hard, quenching it will only make it brittle…Thanks for any input
Very nice blade
Awesome stuff!
BEAUTIFUL KNIFE!
Hey nice work man...really like that you left the pattern of the file on the blade!
maybe he left it to make it look cool
Well, that is a really graphically clear video. I have a couple of the rasps and maybe I'll try it. I see about the torch below----what the heck is that band grinder that can do steel and still do wood?? (I favor Guilds, myself!)
That was super friggen cool
Loks Great! Fine Job!
I think I know what I'll be doing this weekend. ☺
Fine Job Sir!
Topp work.

Beautiful.
Thanks so much for the video, I really enjoyed it,please when do we use case hardening powder?
I don’t know that sorry
That was fantastic
Great 👍 job brother
Did you just grind off the excess rivet for the handle or you cut it off?
Nice job done ! May I ask what is your torch system ? Thanks
Good job
Muito legal gostei parabéns
Very much enjoyed this video. Thanks for sharing !
choou muito bacana parabéns
Odlicno super je
Genial parcero 👍
Did you quench in water. Nice video. Picked up 2 today and like your design.
A good knife! How much does this cost? I want to buy.
Very Nice
Super Master 💥👍🇰🇿🇰🇿🇰🇿
why you heating first before cuting?
What pressure were you running your propane burner at?
HELLLLLLLL YEAHHHHHHHHH!
Hi David, thanks for your amazing video's. I do have a question on the torch you are using, is it like the one Harbor Freight sells?
Bruce Jolly we don’t have harbour freight in New Zealand sorry, this is sold as a garden blowtorch for removing weeds etc! Hope that helps
Get a bitumen rubber burn roof torch from any roofing supply co.
@@DavidParker That's the type of torch they sell. It looks almost identical. Thanks again for the great video.
Beautiful
Thank you!
Super robota
Damn that looks smooooooth
I love it when people make shit out of random shit with cool designs like this
This comment make me laugh out loud thank you
Awesome job!. One question: why do you have to heat treat the file if it already has good mechanical properties?
Gerardo Garza I first annealed it to make the steel softer and easier to cut and grind away and then hardened it after the bulk of material had been removed. I could’ve easily ruined the heat treat of the file when grinding (which could heat the steel up to much) anyway so I figured I might as well anneal it and work with softer steel
@@DavidParker is rasp better D2 tool steel ?
Ildaci Gomides thank you!
kaskallokan ka cadela e miña after quenching it in water I tempered it in the oven, some steels need water quenching. It’s very common.
dear Sr. David Parker!
Awesome!!
Buenísimo para el asado.
Thought it was pretty on Instagram, then saw the video. It's goddamn beautiful!!
Bạn chế tạo cây dao thật tuyệt vời quá bạn ơi . Cảm ơn bạn chia sẻ. Mình muốn làm quen cùng bạn chúc bán mạnh khoẻ nhé !👍👍👍👍🇻🇳🇻🇳🇻🇳

I want one!
Top de + parabéns
Wow mantap banget motif pisau nya juga mantap banget nih kk
“鋼水”就夠喇,但會不會生銹?
Хороший нож👍
Great video. I have a pile of old rasps I want to make seaxs out of. I do have a question. It looks like you quenched the blade which makes it hard, then put it in an oven to anneal it which makes it soft. Why do you do this? (yours isn't the only video I've seen this done)
You might want to google heat treating steel but the basic is that if you quench something properly it’s as hard as steel can get, but with that hardness comes brittleness, you don’t want your knife snapping or shattering if you drop it so you need to temper it back to a good compromise between super hard and resistance to shattering
@@DavidParker went temp was your oven?
What not went
I think I understand the principle behind you heating it before cutting it out but could you explain so that I'm not getting it wrong?
I heated it and let it cool slowly - to anneal it- make it softer and easier to cut and grind and drill holes

SUPER KREATIF Sukses GBU
How much to make a set of 4 knives?
Hi mate , new to this… can you explain why the heating up ? Is it a strength thing or for other reason
It’s heat treating. I anneal the file by heating it up and letting it cool slowly, which makes it softer. Then after I have mostly shaped it I heat it up and quench it which hardens the steel. Then I temper it in the oven so it isn’t so hard that it’s brittle.
What bit did you use to drill through the tang?
Just a general purpose drill bit
Is rasp knife better than D2 tool steel for a short sword. Pls tell
No idea, I’m not a metallurgist. I’d recommend buying a steel that you know what it’s composed of such as d2. But some of these old rasps are made of good steel and it’s a fun way to reuse them.
Mantap 👍👍👍
Oddly satisfying.
👍👍👍👍👍
Quanto custa uma semelhante a este...
Have you had problems warping blades quenching in water?
Ken Funke this was my first time quenching in water so I was quite worried but I think I left it thick enough to avoid it. It wouldn’t harden properly in oil.
@@DavidParker Thanks for the reply. I have had problems quenching in oil also with blades not hardening enough. My test pieces, although hard enough, warped in water so I was just wandering.
Sweet 👍🏻 👍🏻
luar biasa ajib👍❤️

Why do they put it in the oven? What's the process called? Thanks
