    Thank you for actually forging the knife instead of grinding the shape. I never like people grinding the shape. I don’t know why but I like forging better because I for some reason I feel more proud in my work. Although I have never made a blade with high carbon steel I have made railroad spike knifes lol. I really want to forge a knife I can use without bending though.

      For future reference and perhaps for the sake of winning an argument in the future-
      You're right to think that. Forging literally makes the blade stronger and better. The process of hammering the shape realigns the crystal molecule structure in the direction that you want, perfectly complimenting the structural changes that occur in heat-treating. When the shape is ground in, the grain doesn't change direction or structure and therefore results in a weaker knife!

      @@owendaulton9316 I'm not an expert, but have been practicing knifemaking and now smithing for a bit, and I've both read and heard from my mentor the idea of hand-forging making more durable knives is outdated. While what you've said 𝘸𝘢𝘴 true, hand-forging only makes a difference in the strength of a knife made from much earlier and simpler, high-carbon tool steels.
      I'm affraid my evidence isn't as articulate or precise as yours was, and I may be misremembering specifics slightly, but the reasoning behind this is that modern manufacturing produces steel with a much closer/densely bonded grain structure, making any effect forging might have had on it negligible to nonexistent (again, take this with a grain of salt), and of course, the risk of carbon being drawn out due to constant and severe reheating exists.
      I still prefer forging because it's substantially more efficient than stock removal and gives you immense control over your material, whether or not it produces a stronger knife.
      Curious where you got your info from, btw. I trust my mentor, but for all I know you're a professional in the field, too.

    Two tips:
    First, fill a cookie sheet with sand and place the blade on the sand. Then slide cookie sheet in the oven to temper. This will help distribute the heat evenly and avoid overheating the edge and tip.
    Second, wrap a magnet in newsprint and place on the tang while drilling. It will catch all the coils of steel. You can then unwrap it over a trash can and all the metal drops in. Easy cleanup.

    • @XBullitt16X
      @XBullitt16X 5 лет назад +1

      Interesting, so it's similair to say the Japanese method of using clay to insulate parts of blade you do not want to harden while heating and quenching, like the softer spine on a katana that incorperates two different kinds of steel or other bladed weapons and tools. Except in this case it's not hardening but tempering, the complete opposite. Neat trick.

    Just a few observations, always work in shadow as a couple of times you were working cold steel. That will build stress fractures in the steel. Also you would find the steel easier to move if you had your steel twice as hot. But you are at least doing the work of creating, instead of going the easy out and shaping your knife on a sander. Just a few hints that will aid you in the future. Thank you.

    • @giggidygiggidy4884
      @giggidygiggidy4884 6 лет назад

      Julio Cavalera that’s called tempering, it’s generally done in a couple of 1-2 hour cycles at or around 200*C. After you quench the steel in oil it’s very hard but very brittle, you temper the blade to make it slightly softer so that it’s still tough but not so likely to break or shatter during use.

    You took a leaf spring and did a good job of forging it and attaching a nice handle!
    Let us all know how well the over heating of the edge worked out! Seems to me that the VERY deep purple will cause you to have a very brittle edge but, you MAY have counteracted that with the sanding afterward!
    Kudos!
